What’s On June – August 2014

A Family Collection | A National Museum | An International Treasure House

The Wallace Collection is a national museum in an historic London town house. The collection was acquired principally in the nineteenth century by the third and fourth Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace. In the twenty-nine galleries are unsurpassed displays of French eighteenth-century paintings, furniture and porcelain together with superb Old Master paintings. A magnificent collection of princely arms and armour is shown in four galleries and there are further important displays of gold boxes, miniatures, sculpture and Medieval and Renaissance works of art. As part of our programme of room refurbishment the Great Gallery will be closed until 19 September and European Armoury III until early September. Major works of art are redisplayed in other rooms, although there will be some disruption and object moves throughout this period

Treasure of the Month Highlights great works of art in the Wallace Collection

June Aelbert Cuyp, Shipping on the Maas, Netherlands, early 1650s Cuyp’s Shipping on the Maas represents the ‘wijdschip’ or passenger ferry that ran between Rotterdam and the artist’s native city of Dordrecht (seen on the right of the picture). Cuyp shows the vessel’s sail filled by a strong breeze as it ploughs into choppy waves. Recent conservation work has enhanced the crispness of the work’s composition and the artist’s use of a naturalistic colour range. Cuyp’s paintings formed an essential part of the British picture gallery from the 18th century onwards. Talks: Lucy Davis, 12 and 23 June at 1pm

July Unknown Netherlandish artist and Nicolas Lancret, A Young Women in a Kitchen, France, c. 1720–30 Eighteenth-century collectors often combined paintings by different hands and from different periods as pairs. Occasionally, contemporary artists were asked to alter paintings from much earlier periods. A Young Woman in a Kitchen is a rare survivor of this practice, because often the additions were removed again at a later date. This painting can tell the story of how artists and collectors in eighteenth-century Paris saw, discussed and displayed earlier works. Talks: Christoph Vogtherr, 7 and 28 July at 1pm

August Copy of the writing-table of the Elector of Bavaria, John Webb, England, 1854 – 57 The reinstallation of this desk in the East Drawing Room, where it has been reunited with its clock for the first time in many years, provides the opportunity for us to throw a spotlight on one of the remarkable pieces of furniture commissioned specifically for the 4th Marquess of Hertford. Talks: Helen Jacobsen, 4 and 19 August at 1pm

Exhibition Five Masterpieces from the Great Gallery

Until 25 August

Anthony van Dyck, Paris, c. 1628, detail

Taking the rare opportunity presented by the Great Gallery refurbishment, five outstanding cabinet paintings by some of our most celebrated artists: Poussin, Van Dyck, Velázquez, Domenichino and Frans Hals, will be presented in the intimate setting of the exhibition galleries.

Throughout the summer, some works of art may be off display as we approach the unveiling of the refurbished Great Gallery, one of the world’s outstanding picture galleries, on 19 September. Please bear with us during this period of transition.

Conservation Display Reproducing the 18th-century: Copying French Furniture 10 March – 29 August 2014 In the second half of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century, many of the best pieces of 18th-century French furniture were copied by skilled cabinet-makers in Paris and London. These copies were of great quality and were highly prized by their owners. In this display in the Conservation Gallery, the Wallace Collection’s desk by Pierre-Antoine Foullet (circa 1777) is compared with one such copy, enabling visitors to compare the construction techniques and finishes of two different periods of cabinet making.

A display talk with Curator Helen Jacobsen will take place on 5 June at 1pm

Talks, Lectures & Special Events Free, no need to book unless otherwise stated. Talks in the galleries are strictly limited to 25 people with places allocated on a first come first served basis. Course Is this Baroque? Seventeenth-Century Painting and Sculpture Thursdays 16 October – 27 November, 2pm – 4.30pm Cost: £196, £176 concessions When it re-opens in September, the Great Gallery will house some of the most dramatic works in the collection, from the glowing intensity of Murillo’s Adoration of the Shepherds and the majesty of Philippe de Champaigne’s Annunciation to the inventive wit of Frans Hals’s Laughing Cavalier and the muscularity of Tacca’s bronze sculptures. But there are also paintings by Rembrandt, Van Dyck and Velásquez, not to mention Poussin’s cooly classical Dance to the Music of Time. Somehow art historians have fitted all of these diverse artists into the category ‘Baroque’. Over the course of seven Thursday afternoons we will explore how artists from different countries responded to developments of art in the 17th century, whether they can really be united under one stylistic banner, and what the definition of this elusive term should be. Taught by Richard Stemp.
