What’s On March – May 2014

A Family Collection | A National Museum | An International Treasure House

The Wallace Collection is a national museum in an historic London town house. The collection was acquired principally in the nineteenth century by the third and fourth Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace. In the twenty-nine galleries are unsurpassed displays of French eighteenth-century paintings, furniture and porcelain together with superb Old Master paintings. A magnificent collection of princely arms and armour is shown in four galleries and there are further important displays of gold boxes, miniatures, sculpture and Medieval and Renaissance works of art. As part of our programme of room refurbishment the Great Gallery and European Armoury III will be closed until September 2014. Major works of art are redisplayed in other rooms.

Treasure of the Month Highlights great works of art in the Wallace Collection

March Scimitar of King Henri II of France, attributed to Daniele da Serravalle, Italy, c. 1550 – 1560 This rich curved sword, the hilt chiselled with crowns and monogram Hs, was made for King Henri II of France not as a weapon of war, but as an ornate costume piece. Its exotic form may have been designed to evoke the weapons of the Greaco-Roman heroes of Classical antiquity. Alternatively, it could have been intended to resemble a Turkish sabre or shamshir; at this time the French were allied with the Turks against the Holy Roman Empire. Talks: Tobias Capwell, 3 and 17 March at 1pm

April Rosa Bonheur, Brizo, A Shepherd’s Dog, France, 1864 Rosa Bonheur, who specialised in animal paintings, was one of the most admired and successful French artists of the second half of the nineteenth century. Of the four paintings by her in the Wallace Collection probably the most popular is this portrait of an otter hound named after an ancient Greek goddess, the protector of sailors and fishermen. Talks: Stephen Duffy, 7 and 29 April at 1pm

May Silver-gilt salt cellar, England, 1578 This exquisitely made, English, silver-gilt, salt cellar dating to 1578, would have graced only the grandest banquet table or buffet at the time. Salt was a rare and precious commodity, and so this salt cellar would have sat nearest the highest ranking or most important guest at a dinner. Talks: Carmen Holdsworth-Delgado, 1 and 29 May at 1pm

Great Art Quest: The Four Seasons

The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts’ Great Art Quest: The Four Seasons 1 – 9 March 2014 Diego Velázquez, The Lady with a Fan, Spain, c. 1640, detail

Five Masterpieces from the Great Gallery 9 May – 25 August Taking the rare opportunity presented by the Great Gallery refurbishment, five outstanding cabinet paintings by some of our most celebrated artists: Poussin, Van Dyck, Velázquez, Domenichino and Frans Hals, will be presented in the intimate setting of the exhibition galleries. From May, some works of art may be off display as we approach the unveiling of the refurbished Great Gallery, one of the world’s greatest picture galleries, on 19 September. Please bear with us during this period of transition.

Four classes, from primary schools in Westminster and Camden, have worked with an artist and a storyteller to explore the theme of the seasons. Pupils created ‘Time Machines’ inspired by our spectacular gilt embossed pageant shield, upon which scenes representing each month of the year are depicted. Turn the time machines to reveal watercolours of the different seasons and illustrations of seasonal stories. This project is part of The Great Art Quest created by the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts which believes that every child has the right to be inspired by the arts. Conservation Display Reproducing the 18th-century: Copying French Furniture 10 March – 29 August 2014 In the second half of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century, many of the best pieces of 18th-century French furniture were copied by skilled cabinetmakers in Paris and London. Rather than being dismissed as mere ‘reproductions’, these copies were of

great quality and were highly prized by their owners. In this display in the Conservation Gallery, the Wallace Collection’s desk by Pierre-Antoine Foullet (circa 1777) is compared with one such copy, enabling visitors to compare the construction techniques and finishes of two different periods of cabinet making.

Display talks take place on the 20 March and 23 May at 1pm

Special Lectures The Lost Second Fencing Book of Nicoletto Giganti Saturday 22 March, 1pm Nicoletto Giganti’s famous 1606 work on rapier fighting is one of the great classics of Renaissance fencing scholarship. In it Giganti refined the Italian school of self-defence considerably, bringing it to a wide international Nicoletto Giganti, c. 1600 – audience. In the centuries that followed, 06 Wallace Collection, De Walden Library, 9/5 rumours circulated that Giganti had written a second book, but this claim could never be confirmed. It appeared that no copies of Giganti’s sequel had survived, if indeed it had ever existed – until one was discovered in the care of the Wallace Collection in 2013. Giganti’s second book of fencing has now been translated into English and published by two practitioner-scholars, Piermarco Terminiello and Joshua Pendragon. Join the authors and Tobias Capwell, Curator of Arms and Armour, for a fascinating discussion of the work and its remarkable discovery.
