Message from the President

Table of Contents

Welcome to fall semester at Wallace State Community College! At Wallace State our goal is to help students Start Early, Start Right, Finish and Succeed! Every faculty and staff member here is committed to student success. That begins when you first set foot on campus or enroll online. You will be assigned an advisor and a success coach to help ensure that you are on the right path and that you receive all the encouragement and guidance you need to navigate college. Our new Student Resource Center on the 8th and 9th floors of the Bailey Center includes a Tutoring Lab, which is open to everyone – whether you simply need a computer lab or some extra help to understand your coursework, and a Job Placement Center. In addition to being recognized among the fastest growing community colleges in the nation, Wallace State has earned renown for this commitment to student success, as evidenced by a number of complimentary initiatives that have resulted in national rankings. First and foremost we are a Learning College, that is a college focused on improving student learning. It is this focus that underlies all that we do. We are an Achieving the Dream College, which is also about student success, using a data driven approach to identify areas where we need to improve learning outcomes. This work has resulted in such advancements as mainstreaming developmental courses so that underprepared students, with a little extra help and support, can begin in college level coursework on time. Similarly, we have built more flexibility into our placement exams. And we have worked to reduce barriers that make enrollment and completion more difficult than it should be. We were named a National League of Nursing Center of Excellence, and we were also one of 30 community colleges selected to develop and pilot the American Association of Community Colleges Pathways Project. The Pathways Project involves a rethinking and redesign of the student experience from enrollment through completion. Through Pathways, students are encouraged to choose a broad field of study from one of four metamajors - Liberal Arts/General Studies, Applied Technologies, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), or Health Science — at the outset of their college career. The coursework taken early in a student’s degree plan becomes applicable to any major within the Pathway. Choosing a specific major will come after students have explored career options in the new GPS Freshman Seminar and have begun to build an e-portfolio, when the preference for a major is clearer and when it is the appropriate time for more specialized courses. As a result of our work in these areas, Wallace State has among the highest retention, completion and student success rates in the nation. Please take full advantage of all Wallace State has to offer – service clubs and student organizations, athletic events, plays and music performances, an art museum, wellness center… The more you participate in the college experience, the more you will get out of it. Study after study shows a direct correlation between student involvement and student success. To learn more about these opportunities, log on to the Wallace State website, download our app, or visit Lion Central. We are excited to welcome you to the college and look forward to serving you! In addition to an application for admission, students are required to supply the College with an official copy of their high school transcript or official copy of their GED scores. Students transferring from another college must submit an admissions application and an official copy of their transcript(s) from each college they have attended; in addition to their high school transcripts or GED scores if they did not complete a baccalaureate degree. Transient students must submit a transient letter from their home institution stating the courses they will be allowed to take in addition to an application for admission, Proof of ID, and Residency Form. Graduates from a non-accredited high school with a diploma demonstrating successful completion of a course of study on the secondary level based upon the Carnegie units required by the state education agency at the time of the award (currently 24) are eligible for admission. If the above requirements are not met, the student must take a GED test. Special requirements may apply to International Students seeking admission. International students must submit official transcripts, an I-20 Form, TOEFL scores, declaration of responsibility statement, proof of insurance, and all appropriate admissions forms. Further information is available in the college catalog. Accelerated high school students who have completed the

tenth grade, have the required GPA, and are recommended by the local principal may enroll at Wallace State only in postsecondary courses for which high school prerequisites have been completed. Financial Aid

256.352.8182

Students receiving financial aid should read the following information carefully:

Important Dropping a course prior to August 28, 2017, will result in a recalculation of a student’s federal financial aid, which includes Pell Grants, Direct Loans, and SEOG Funds. This recalculation could affect the amount of the financial aid awarded and may result in the student owing a balance to the College / U.S. Department of Education. Federal financial aid awards are based in part on how many credit hours the student is registered to take, whether fulltime, three-quarter time, half-time or less than half-time. Pell Grant, Direct Loan and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) recipients who withdraw from all classes prior to October 26, 2017 or who stop attending prior to October 11, 2017 and fail to pass a minimum of one credit hour may have received what is called an “overpayment” of financial aid funds. This is determined by a Return to Title IV Calculation (R2T4). Future federal financial aid awards from WSCC or any other college will cease until the overpayment is repaid. Apply Early, Every Year APPLY EARLY – Students applying for financial aid should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at least two (2) months before the next semester begins. Since the FAFSA is processed by the federal government, applying early allows time to resolve any unforeseen problems and requests for clarification and additional documentation. Applying early will also help students avoid potential long lines or waits. The FAFSA application is available online at www.fafsa.gov. Visit www.wallacestate.edu/financial-aid to view the 7 Easy Steps to the FAFSA video. Bookstore Charges If financial aid awards exceed the amount of tuition and fees owed, students may charge books and supplies on their Pell accounts at the WSCC Bookstore. These accounts will be open for charges Thursday, August 10. Students Taking Online Classes Students taking online classes are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all Blackboard and other online courses. Federal financial aid funds will not be distributed until attendance is verified.

Balance Checks and Attendance Verification According to federal guidelines, attendance must be verified before balance checks can be mailed. Students must either attend class in person or, for online courses, do an online orientation or other assigned coursework as required by the instructor for attendance to be verified. In order to receive their full balance check amount, students must have attendance verified in each class for which they are registered. Students who have not had attendance verified by August 23 will be removed from those classes and will need instructor permission to re-register. Pell Grant and Direct Loan balance checks, with no holds, will begin mailing Tuesday, August 29, 2017. For classes that begin later than August 22, 2017, balance checks will be mailed at a later date. Students must attend class prior to any funds being mailed for that particular class. Students can check their attendance verification on their MyWallaceState account under the Student tab. Wallace State Scholarships Wallace State Scholarship recipients must complete a 20172018 FAFSA before scholarship funds can be credited to student accounts. Remember Students must re-apply for Pell Grants for every academic year (Fall – Summer). Students applying for 2017-18 (Fall 2017, Spring 2018, Summer 2018) Pell Grants must complete the forms with 2015 tax data. Residence Halls

Living on campus has many advantages. Wallace State’s residence halls provide an environment conducive to academic achievement and are conveniently located within walking distance to classrooms, the library, and other campus facilities. Residents often find that living in a dorm is a great way to become involved in student activities and make new friends. Wallace State offers both men’s and women’s dormitories. The rooms are large and designed for double-occupancy, but a limited number of single rooms are available. Most rooms have two double beds, two study areas with storage units, a large walk-in closet and a private bath. Multiple laundry facilities are located in each residence hall with coin-operated washers and dryers. Telephone and cable outlets are provided in each room. The residence halls also provide community kitchen facilities. In addition, residents are allowed to have refrigerators and microwave ovens in their rooms. The WSCC Café, located in the School of Nursing and Center for Science, is open Monday-Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and provides meals offered through the meal plan. A variety of restaurants are located adjacent to campus.

Learning Communities A Wallace State Learning Communities class is a group of students (usually one 9:30 a.m. course designated “Learning Communities” in the schedule) who participate in organized, group-learning outside of the classroom. Students share common experiences centered on their academics and community, achieve a deeper understanding of their course’s subject matter, build relationships with one another, and learn together. Sign-up for courses designated “Learning Communities” and you’ll attend campus and community events as part of your class. Events may include viewing a film, attending a performance or game, and/or listening to a guest speaker. You’ll learn outside of the classroom, have the opportunity to work with your classmates, and apply what you know. Page 53

Common Read 2017-2018

Wallace State Community College begins the ninth annual Common Read Program in Fall 2017. The Common Read brings together students, faculty, and staff in discussions and activities centered on a new selection each year. The choice for 2017/2018 is Cycle of Hope by Tricia Downing. A lifelong athlete active as a swimmer, gymnast, diver and cyclist, Downing was paralyzed from the chest down after colliding with a car while training on her bike. Cycle of Hope chronicles her journey from the first terrifying moments of impact with the car, through rehab and her emergence as a world-class athlete. She is recognized as a pioneer in the sport of paratriathalon, as she became the first paraplegic female to complete an Iron distance triathalon (2.4-mile swim, 11.2-mile bike, 26.2 run). Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the WSCC Bookstore. Please join us in reading this great book even if it’s not required in your courses. Watch the WSCC calendar for postings about a variety of speakers and events related to the book.
