Wallace State performing arts students have gone on to careers in music education and direction, directing bands and choirs in educational and worship settings. They perform as actors, singers and as members of various types of bands and musical groups, often learning to play several instruments and performing a variety of styles to improve their versatility. Theatre, film and television provide opportunities not only for actors, but for singers and musicians, who may perform in recording or production studios, for radio and even video games. Music careers also include composing and arranging music. Theatre careers include directing, playwriting and screenwriting, set and costume design, choreography, and the like. Classes and activities offered at Wallace State introduce students to many of these areas. The benefits to students who participate in the performing arts, regardless of whether they are majoring in one of these disciplines, in addition to achieving subject matter expertise, are an insider’s perspective that leads to a lifetime of enjoyment of the arts, the feeling of accomplishment that comes from being part of something greater than oneself, and skills such as collaboration and team work, leadership, poise and creative selfexpression. Wallace State participates in the STARS statewide articulation program, which guarantees seamless transferability of coursework to the state’s public universities.
