Message from the President
Table of Contents
Welcome to spring semester at Wallace State Community College! Whether you are returning to campus or joining us for the first time, we are glad you have chosen Wallace State. As we start a new year and a new semester, there is a lot of excitement in the air. The college broke ground this fall on a new campus facility in downtown Oneonta to address the growing demand for higher education in the region. Our temporary campus has already outgrown its facility and we look forward to serving more students in Blount County and beyond in the coming years. Wallace State has been named to a prestigious list of the Top 150 community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute for the third time. Our completion agenda – focused on helping students Start Early, Start Right, Finish and Succeed – is receiving widespread acclaim as rates of student success, retention and graduation climb to among the highest in the nation. The college has once again been recognized as a Military Friendly institution, with resources dedicated to honoring and serving our veterans on campus. We have a new Student Activities coordinator, who will be designing more opportunities to engage students in campus life. Our new Student Resource Center on the 8th and 9th floors of the Bailey Center includes a Tutoring Lab, with study space and a computer lab accessible to all students, and a Job Placement Center, where students can search for internships and job opportunities. We are committed to serving students with excellence in all that we do. Over the past year Wallace State, working in concert with others, successfully lobbied Congress to reinstate funding for year-round Pell Grants, so that our students could have more opportunities to succeed. Pell grants can now be awarded for the equivalent of full-time enrollment during summer semester for students who qualify, which means students can finish more quickly. Wallace State was also chosen as an experimental site to offer Pell Grants for dually enrolled students. Start planning now for your future. Visit an advisor in Lion Central to review a Pathways map for your program and ensure that you are taking the classes you need to graduate on time, and transfer if that is your goal. Our work in Pathways, which has become a national model, streamlines the process from admissions to graduation by encouraging students to choose a broad field of study from one of four metamajors - Liberal Arts/General Studies, Applied Technologies, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), or Health Science — at the outset of their college career, and completing core coursework before moving on to a specialty area. To learn more about all Wallace State has to offer, visit the Wallace State website, download our app, or visit Lion Central. Students make a college, and we look forward to your involvement on our campuses! Vicki P. Karolewics President

Financial Aid
256.352.8182
Students receiving financial aid should read the following information carefully:
IMPORTANT Dropping a course prior to January 18, 2018, will result in a recalculation of a student’s federal financial aid, which includes Pell Grants, Direct Loans, and SEOG Funds. This recalculation could affect the amount of the financial aid awarded and may result in the student owing a balance to the College / U.S. Department of Education. Federal financial aid awards are based in part on how many credit hours the student is registered to take, whether fulltime, three-quarter time, half-time or less than half-time. Pell Grant, Direct Loan and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) recipients who withdraw from all classes prior to March 21, 2018, or who stop attending prior to March 21, 2018, and fail to pass a minimum of one credit hour may have received what is called an “overpayment” of financial aid funds. This is determined by a Return to Title IV Calculation (R2T4). Future federal financial aid awards from WSCC or any other college will cease until the overpayment is repaid. APPLY EARLY, EVERY YEAR APPLY EARLY – Students applying for financial aid should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at least two (2) months before the next semester begins. Since the FAFSA is processed by the federal government, applying early allows time to resolve any unforeseen problems and requests for clarification and additional documentation. Applying early will also help students avoid potential long lines or waits. The FAFSA application is available online at www.fafsa.gov. Visit www.wallacestate.edu/financial-aid to view the 7 Easy Steps to the FAFSA video. BOOKSTORE CHARGES If financial aid awards exceed the amount of tuition and fees owed, students may charge books and supplies on their Pell accounts at the WSCC Bookstore. These accounts will be open for charges Monday, December 18. STUDENTS TAKING ONLINE CLASSES Students taking online classes are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all Blackboard and other online courses. Federal financial aid funds will not be distributed until attendance is verified.
BALANCE CHECKS AND ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION According to federal guidelines, attendance must be verified before balance checks can be mailed. Students must either attend class in person or, for online courses, do an online orientation or other assigned coursework as required by the instructor for attendance to be verified. In order to receive their full balance check amount, students must have attendance verified in each class for which they are registered. Students who have not had attendance verified by January 17, 2018, will be removed from those classes and will need instructor permission to re-register. Pell Grant and Direct Loan balance checks, with no holds, will begin mailing Friday, January 19, 2018. For classes that begin later than January 12, 2018, balance checks will be mailed at a later date. Students must attend class prior to any funds being mailed for that particular class. Students can check their attendance verification on their myWallaceState account under the Student tab. WALLACE STATE SCHOLARSHIPS Wallace State Scholarship recipients must complete a 20172018 FAFSA before scholarship funds can be credited to student accounts. REMEMBER Students must re-apply for Pell Grants for every academic year (Fall – Summer). Students applying for 2017-18 (Fall 2017, Spring 2018, Summer 2018) Pell Grants must complete the forms with 2015 tax data. It is the student’s responsibility to provide any additional information requested by the Financial Aid Office. Financial aid cannot be awarded until the student’s file is complete. **Priority Deadline for Fall 2018 Financial Aid is June 1, 2018. Financial Aid paperwork must be completed and submitted to the Financial Aid Office along with Admission requirements (ID, residency, transcripts, etc.) by the June 1 deadline in order for funds to be available for Fall Semester 2018. Visit http://www. wallacestate.edu/finaid.html. Students should review their myWallaceState account for individual requirements.

Refund for a complete withdrawal: A student who officially or unofficially withdraws from all classes before the first day of class will be refunded the total tuition and other institutional charges. Wallace State does not give cash refunds: Students must complete a Drop/Add Form for the Admissions Office (available through Lion Central in the Bailey Center lobby). Under normal circumstances, refund checks are issued weekly and mailed to the student. If payment was made by check, the student must wait 15 days for the check to clear before a refund is issued. Living on campus has many advantages. Wallace State’s residence halls provide an environment conducive to academic achievement and are conveniently located within walking distance to classrooms, the library, and other campus facilities. Residents often find that living in a dorm is a great way to become involved in student activities and make new friends. Wallace State offers both men’s and women’s dormitories. The rooms are large and designed for double-occupancy, but a limited number of single rooms are available. Most rooms have two double beds, two study areas with storage units, a large walk-in closet and a private bath. Multiple laundry facilities are located in each residence hall with coin-operated washers and dryers. Telephone and cable outlets are provided in each room. The residence halls also provide community kitchen facilities. In addition, residents are allowed to have refrigerators and microwave ovens in their rooms. The WSCC Café, located in the School of Nursing and Center for Science, is open Monday-Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and provides meals offered through the meal plan. A variety of restaurants are located adjacent to campus.

Common Read 2017-2018
Wallace State Community College began the ninth annual Common Read Program in Fall 2017. The Common Read brings together students, faculty, and staff in discussions and activities centered on a new selection each year. The choice for 2017/2018 is Cycle of Hope by Tricia Downing. A lifelong athlete active as a swimmer, gymnast, diver and cyclist, Downing was paralyzed from the chest down after colliding with a car while training on her bike. Cycle of Hope chronicles her journey from the first terrifying moments of impact with the car, through rehab and her emergence as a world-class athlete. She is recognized as a pioneer in the sport of paratriathalon, as she became the first paraplegic female to complete an Iron distance triathalon (2.4-mile swim, 11.2-mile bike, 26.2 run). Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the WSCC Bookstore. Please join us in reading this great book even if it’s not required in your courses. Watch the WSCC calendar for postings about a variety of speakers and events related to the book.
