About Wallace State Most importantly, at Wallace State you will be served by an awardwinning and student-centered faculty and staff who are masters of their crafts. They are here to assist you in every aspect of the college experience, from webbased registration, to personal advising in the ACTION Center, and Student Support Services in the new Learning Success Center. We believe students are the reason we exist and place student learning and success at the forefront of our activities and initiatives.

Wallace State is a part of a system that serves the needs of more than 300,000 individuals and has been conservatively estimated to produce a $3 billion annual economic impact on this state and in our communities. The real impact, however, is in improving the lives of students through education. Since opening our doors in 1966, Wallace State has served hundreds of thousands of students. From the very beginning, Wallace State embraced a commitment to excellence that has become not only a tradition but our source of inspiration. Today Wallace State is one of the largest colleges in the Alabama Community College System, serving more than 7,000 students each semester. This college is a virtual powerhouse in educational programming, with more than 50 majors leading to degree, certificate and transfer opportunities. Our focus on excellence is evident in our personal commitment to serving students and in the technologically-advanced learning environments that ensure our students receive the most effective education. At Wallace State you will find classrooms infused with the latest technology, including interactive SmartBoards, Tegrity and MediaSite Live. Through online learning, videoconferencing, podcasting, and off-campus centers, we provide education convenient to our students' busy lives. Wallace State provides seamless educational opportunities from early high school entry to the graduate level. Through dual enrollment, the FastTrack Academy, TechPrep, and other programs, high school students seeking college credit in academic transfer programs, career technical education, public safety, health care or automotive technology will find their needs met here. The STARS articulation system guarantees our students transferability of credit to any Alabama public college or university. For those who want to complete their bachelor's and master’s degrees on campus, Wallace State students may take advantage of our University Center partnerships and special articulation agreements, including those with Athens State University, the University of Alabama, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Auburn University, and Troy University. Our students obtain unprecedented levels of success, whether transferring, taking licensure exams or finding employment, and their satisfaction has been reflected in the College’s retention and graduation rates among students that exceed the state and national average. Students who transfer to universities consistently outperform those who started there. Our graduates gain competitive jobs and high praise from employers. Licensure rates rank at or above state and national averages, and our students score above the national average on the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Performance (CAAP). 3

The Door is Open, Come on In Wallace State Community College maintains an "open door" admissions policy. You just need to complete an application, and supply the College with supporting documents including proper identification, and appropriate official high school transcripts, GED scores, or ACT or SAT scores. Students who enroll in courses such as non-credit or skills training, may be granted admission without a minimum score on the ACT or SAT, a GED Certificate, or transcripts from a high school or college. Requirements vary by program. Information is available online, in the course catalog, or by meeting with an advisor in Wallace State’s ACTION Center. Those students who need to obtain a GED may take classes to prepare for the test free of charge through Wallace State Adult Education. GED classes are offered on campus, online and at affiliated sites both day and evening. Classes are also offered for employment training and English as a Second Language.

Q&A: Question:

“Is the application process complicated?” Answer: Simple Steps. It only takes one easy step at a time. Here’s a checklist. 1. Make an appointment with an advisor in the ACTION Center. Figure out funding. There are many opportunities for students to obtain funding through financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, work-study, WIA, TRA, displaced homemakers’ grants, and veterans’ benefits. Call the Financial Aid Office for guidance at 256.352.8182. 5. You are enrolled. Your college experience is about to begin! Just pick up a class schedule and dive right in.

Did You Know? Community college graduates earn 24 percent more in the workplace today than their workplace counterparts with less education. Eighty percent of the new jobs available in the next decade will require a minimum of two years of postsecondary education, making Alabama’s community colleges and Wallace State more important than ever.

The Campus Wallace State is situated in north central Alabama in the town of Hanceville. Known as the “crown jewel” of the community college system for the beauty of its campus, the College is brimming with green spaces, including a veritable botanical garden of trees and flowers, walking paths, rolling hills, outdoor recreational areas, and a small lake, all of which provide an excellent backdrop for state-of-the art classrooms and facilities and the best environments for student learning and success. Wallace State’s physical campus has grown from its original 1966 dimensions of four buildings on four acres to 42 buildings on 299 acres today. Original buildings on campus include the newly renovated Electronics and Drafting Building, the Harlan G. Allen Math Building, the Banquet Hall and Cafeteria, and the General Studies Building that now houses Wallace State’s widely respected Crime Lab and Criminal Justice department. The often photographed James C. Bailey Center is, at 12 stories tall, the most widely recognized building on campus and the location of one-stop student services and administrative offices, classrooms, and college events. (As this building undergoes renovation beginning in fall 2010, the offices within will be temporarily relocated.) Wallace State’s Coliseum, home to the nationally recognized women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams, seats 5,000 spectators and is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the southeast. Other notable buildings include residence halls for men and women, the Wallace State Library, Student Center, Science Complex, and seven-story Bevill Building. Among the newest buildings on campus are the Health Sciences Building, which contains a dental clinic, and the Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, which boasts the College’s $9.5 million art collection. The College also operates off campus centers at J.B. Pennington High School in Blountsville, Brewer High School in Somerville, Addison High School, and Hayden High School, and offers an array of online courses. Wallace State is located approximately 10 miles from Exit 291 on Interstate 65, and approximately one hour from international airports located in Birmingham to the south and Huntsville to the north. Directions to campus and a virtual tour of the campus may be found on the Wallace State web site at www.wallacestate.edu.

Did You Know? The College is home to a $9.5 million art collection donated by Evelyn Burrow. The collection is housed on campus in the Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts.

When students get ready to choose a college, they often want to know not only about the programs offered but also about the personality of the place. Ask any Wallace State student or alumnus what sets the college apart, and they'll likely comment on two things: one is how friendly and helpful everyone is, and the other is the beauty of the campus. The campus is large enough to have a university campus-feel with the activities only a large campus can bring, like performing arts events and athletics, and small enough that students and faculty know each other by name. It is a campus that is safe, and is kept that way through campus security and a shared sense of individual responsibility. When accidents or severe weather happen, an emergency alert system provides fast and reliable information. Our faculty and staff go out of their way to provide the best college experience for students, and to provide support and encouragement for students to adjust to college life, and to develop and achieve their goals. That includes providing engaging activities for socializing with friends, as well as challenges, opportunities, and inspiration for personal growth, from clubs and organizations to international travel opportunities to workshops and tutoring. At Wallace State students find the right balance of comraderie and opportunity. With more than 30 student clubs and organizations, students have many opportunities to find their place and contribute to the college community. Students of any age can choose from intramural sports, student government, drama club, and the student newspaper just to name a few. Homecoming, Spring Fling, plays, concerts and other activities are just some of the things that keep students connected with each other and fully involved in college life. Wallace State believes in the concept of service learning, using the college education experience as a vehicle to help others. Several Wallace State student organizations support community activities such as the American Red Cross, Christmas Love, March of Dimes Walk America, American Heart Association Heart Walk, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Humane Society, and Cullman Caring for Kids.
