WaLLi WALLACE STATE INSTITUTE FOR LIFELONG LEARNERS For Lifelong Learners 50 and Older WaLLi is Wallace State Lifelong Learning Institute of Wallace State Community College. WaLLi membership is open to all who enjoy learning, making new friends, taking field trips and traveling near and far. There is no homework and certainly no tests. WaLLi is simply for the sheer joy of living. Membership in WaLLi offers a unique learning community that is life enriching, offering opportunities to engage with new people and actively participate in intellectually stimulating groups. Beyond WaLLi

study groups are a wide range of extra-curricular activities that also provide meaningful intellectual and social engagement. Events such as book discussions, volleyball, movie day, day trips, luncheons, WaLLi Eats Out and special lectures enrich the WaLLi experience. Not to mention beginning computer, genealogy and art courses. WaLLi offers a variety of membership options. Choose a membership level that best fits your lifestyle. (Wallace State gym membership is included!)

WaLLi at WSCC WaLLi is a membership program that is based on member participation and volunteerism which fuels for the success of WaLLi. This academic cooperative provides mature adults with opportunities to learn new things, make friends, travel and embrace life. Courses are taught by volunteers who share their knowledge and passions.

Besides broadening your knowledge, research has shown that adults who stay active intellectually are also healthier and more socially balanced. There are other studies that state that keeping your brain busy helps fight off effects of age on memory and perception and may possibly slow the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Registration Tips & Program Information To allow as many members as possible to participate, we would appreciate your cooperation. • Only register for courses you plan to attend. • If your plans change, promptly contact Registration Services at 256-352-7826 to drop the course. • Register for only one course per any given day and time slot. • Only participants who are registered for the course/trip will receive communication from the WaLLi office or instructor. • Bonus Programs are open to the public; no registration needed. • Using a credit/debit card is the preferred method of payment. Health & Wellbeing CELEBRATE HEALTH FAIR September 20, October 25, November 29 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Nursing Building Conference Center The Wallace State Community College Department of Nursing Education invites you to participate in their free initiative called CELEBRATE. This health fair style student-led activity will allow students from various health sciences the opportunity for client teaching, team building and fulfillment of community service and clinical requirements. Please participate to help support our nursing students!! There is no charge. Drawing for door prizes. • Bring a list of medications to be checked for possible adverse reactions • Learn about the importance daily exercises • Learn about “Smart Driving” practices • Learn how to “Eat Wisely” as we get older • Find out what your optimum vital signs should be • Learn relaxation techniques • Learn breathing exercises, energy conservation, proper use of inhalers, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease • Reminisce about days gone by • Learn what situations are a true emergency and when to call 911 DIABETES EDUCATION - 6 Sessions Tuesdays, August 17, 24 and 31, and September 7, 14 and 21 1:00 p.m. WaLLi Classroom Wellness Center Provides diabetes self-management training to those who have diabetes, care for someone with diabetes (spouse), or feel they may be at risk of developing diabetes. The classes educate individuals on how to best control their blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. It also empowers individuals to establish relationships with primary care providers. The role of nutrition and regular exercise is discussed, along with a discussion the importance of developing support networks of family, friends, and use of existing community-based social services. Dance BALLROOM DANCING Session 1: Tuesdays, September 5-October 10 Session 2: Tuesdays, October 17-December 5 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Burrow Center Choreography Room This is a beginning level Ballroom Dance class for those who want to develop and/or improve their social dance skills. The instructor will provide instructions for steps, patterns and proper techniques, including ballroom dance floor etiquette. Three to five dances will be taught depending on class make-up and progress. LINE DANCING Wednesday, November 1 1:00 p..m.-3:00 p.m. Wellness Center Aerobics Room Learn how to do some basic easy steps like the electric slide, which forms the base moves for many different steps and dances. We will also learn some other fun dances, including the cupid shuffle and the chicken dance.

WSCC Alumni Trips The Wallace State Community College Alumni Association sponsors a number of trips each year that are open to the public. Alumni Association Members receive a discount on fees.

HOMESTEAD HOLLOW Friday, November 10 7:30 a.m. Departure from WSCC Coliseum Homestead Hollow festivals feature unique - one of a kind - hand made, hand decorated arts and crafts. Talk to pioneer demonstrators of the old time days, see wood carving, blacksmithing, soap making, wood stove cooking, quilting, and whiskey making at an original working still, tour original cabins as they were built by the early settlers. Visit the apiarist and learn about bee keeping. Relax by one of many streams and listen to live local entertainment all day. Enjoy great food from the food court, BBQ, funnel cakes, fried pies, ice cream, beans, greens, foot-long corn dogs and so much more! Gardening TURF PROGRAM Thursday, September 7, 14, 21 and 28 10:00 a.m. WaLLi Classroom Wellness Center Basics of Turf Grass: This will cover what makes a suitable turf in our area. We will cover different turf grass types and characteristics of those turf grasses that grow in our climate. Turf Grass Care: We will cover basic maintenance practices for turf grass in our climate. This will cover fertilization, watering practices, and general mowing heights for different turf grasses. Weed Science: This course will cover “What is a Weed”, and best practices for weed prevention in the home landscape. Weed ID: We will look at common weeds, prevention, and labeled herbicides for the home landscape. *There will be a drawing for door prizes

MIXED MEDIA SAIL BOAT Tuesday, September 5 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. WaLLi Classroom Wellness Center Come join local artist Laura Walker of Art With a Soul for a step by step mixed media painting class. We’ll be drawing and painting the ocean and clouds in watercolor then adding an acrylic sailboat. Laura will paint with you, showing you each step. FALL VEGETABLE CONTAINER GARDENING Monday, September 18 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. WaLLi Classroom Wellness Center Come learn how to put together a Fall Vegetable Container Garden in this great presentation. This is a great season to grow a variety of lettuces and greens to get your healthy veggies in. We will also cover some root vegetables, such as carrots, beets, and turnips, and discuss how to harvest and how to protect them for a longer season.

OAK TREE DRAWING Thursday, October 5 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. WaLLi Classroom Wellness Center Can you draw? Come learn the basics of drawing an oak tree with a pencil! With the guidance of local artist Laura Walker of Art With a Soul. You will learn how to trace (yay!) a photo of an oak tree and then shade it with a pencil. INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Wednesday, September 20 & 27 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Wellness Center Classroom 113 This course is for the beginner. Time will be spent exploring the camera body (bring instruction booklet). Subjects covered are ISO, aperture, shutter speeds, manual operation, composition, lighting, and image and creative dials. Bring digital camera. ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Wednesday, October 4 & 11 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Wellness Center Classroom 113 Pre-requisite course-Intro to Digital Photography or instructor permission. This course will explore the computer of the camera. Subjects covered- Exposure compensation, computer menu, histograms, lenses, metering modes, pixels and files, elements of design. Also, capturing the best image, importing images into the computer, editing the image, sharing the image, and organizing and storing images. Bring digital camera.

Computers & Technology COMPUTERS FOR LIFELONG LEARNERS Wednesday, September 6 & 13 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Computer Science Lab 24 This course is for the beginner and is designed to introduce you to the computer. Basic functions of Microsoft Windows will be covered along with adjusting personal computer settings. You will also be introduced to the Internet and Email. The instructor is skilled at teaching those with little or no experience with computers. Class is limited to 15 students.

IPHONE SMARTPHONE TABLET Wednesday, September 13 1:00-3:00 p.m. Wellness Center Classroom The goal of this class is to help our fellow seniors get a better understanding of today’s technology. We eliminate all the confusion that smart phones present today. You will learn how to easily operate your phone and better utilize all features. This is a hands-on class, so please bring your phone. Class is limited to 15 students.

ADVANCED COMPUTERS FOR LIFELONG LEARNERS Thursday, October 19 & 26 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Computer Science Lab 24 Building on Computers for Lifelong Learners course, students will now learn more about the Internet and how to send emails with attachments. Microsoft Word will be covered as well. Class is limited to 15 students.

DEALING WITH DIGITAL PICTURES Wednesday, October 25 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Computer Science Lab 24 Now you’ve got them on your phone, how do ya get them off? Learn how to transfer and/or upload pictures for editing or printing and how to save and back up your data. Bring your phones and/or digital cameras, your cords & chargers and a flash drive. FACEBOOK Thursday, October 19 & 26 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Computer Science Lab 24 In this cutting edge course for seniors, we’ll learn to navigate the social community of Facebook. We will create a Facebook account, learn how to locate friends and family members, how to use the news feed and upload pictures. A good working knowledge of computers is required for this class. The beauty of Bunco is that after each round, you move tables and switch partners, thereby getting to chat with everyone in the room by the time the game is over. Melissa Giattino and Ron DeStefano take you to the days when Fred & Ginger and Mickey & Judy filled the screen with undeniable chemistry, effortless harmony and precision tap dancing.

The Cullman Community Band, sponsored by the City of Cullman, was organized and presented its first performance in 2005. The band provides an enriching and fun musical outlet for adult musicians in the Cullman area as well as quality symphonic band entertainment for the community.

Movies

Les Misérables tells an unforgettable story of heartbreak, passion, and the resilience of the human spirit in a breathtaking new production. We’ll be heading to Huntsville in Mid November to experience the Broadway Theatre League! More information and Date To Be Announced! Page 10

The band performs annually at Cullman Oktoberfest, Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, Strawberry Festival, and sometimes at the “Concert in the Park” series at Heritage Park. The band’s repertoire includes standard symphonic band literature, patriotic music, marches, and Broadway/movie show tunes. The band has a standard symphonic band instrumentation - woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Members of the band are volunteers, ranging in age from 18 to 84 and come from many different occupational backgrounds.

We’ve reserved the movie theatre just for you! Join us for movies at the Burrow Museum Theatre. Admission is free. All movies times are at 1:00 p.m. Dates and titles to be determined. Check the WaLLi bulletin board in the Wellness Center for upcoming Movie Days!
