WaLLi WALLACE STATE INSTITUTE FOR LIFELONG LEARNERS For Lifelong Learners 50 and Older WaLLi is Wallace State Lifelong Learning Institute of Wallace State Community College. WaLLi membership is open to all who enjoy learning, making new friends, taking field trips and traveling near and far. There is no homework and certainly no tests. WaLLi is simply for the sheer joy of living. Membership in WaLLi offers a unique learning community that is life enriching, offering opportunities to engage with new people and actively participate in intellectually stimulating groups. Beyond WaLLi

study groups are a wide range of extra-curricular activities that also provide meaningful intellectual and social engagement. Events such as book discussions, volleyball, movie day, day trips, luncheons, WaLLi Eats Out and special lectures enrich the WaLLi experience. Not to mention beginning computer, genealogy and art courses. WaLLi offers a variety of membership options. Choose a membership level that best fits your lifestyle. (Wallace State gym membership is included!)

WaLLi at WSCC WaLLI is a membership program that is based on member participation and volunteerism which fuels for the success of WaLLi. This academic cooperative provides mature adults with opportunities to learn new things, make friends, travel and embrace life. Courses are taught by volunteers who share their knowledge and passions.

Besides broadening your knowledge, research has shown that adults who stay active intellectually are also healthier and more socially balanced. There are other studies that state that keeping your brain busy helps fight off effects of age on memory and perception and may possibly slow the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Registration Tips & Program Information To allow as many members as possible to participate, we would appreciate your cooperation. • Only register for courses you plan to attend. • If your plans change, promptly contact Registration Services at 256-352-7826 to drop the course. • Register for only one course per any given day and time slot. • Only participants who are registered for the course/trip will receive communication from the WaLLi office or instructor. • Bonus Programs are open to the public; no registration needed. • Using a credit/debit card is the preferred method of payment. WELLNESS CENTER USE FOR THE COMMUNITY Registration to this course provides use of the Wellness Center for the Fall Semester. YOGA Meets each Thursday at 8:30 am at Wellness Center Aerobics Room HEALTHY EATING MADE SIMPLE What we eat matters, but so do some other key things. We’ll talk about some ways to help you know how to choose healthier and we’ll cook and try alternative recipes for some of the unhealthy dishes we commonly make and buy. Date: September 8 Time: 9:30 a.m. Location: Wellness Center Kitchen HEALTHY ON A BUDGET & PREPARING HEALTHY MEALS FOR 1 OR 2 Eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive. We’ll share tips and materials to make healthy choices while staying within your budget and demonstrate some fun ways to prepare meals for 1 or 2 people. Find out how to search for information online and from free and not-so-free databases, the census, journals, message boards, libraries, courthouses, or military archives. As you investigate your past learn the many different methods to access information. Each state categorizes their material in different ways so get a road map to help you along your path. Learn how to navigate the many avenues on your road to discovery. Gather information on which sites are reputable and which sites to avoid. Special Interest FUNDAMENTALS OF CAKE DECORATING (Course I) Discover how easy and rewarding it is to decorate wonderful cakes and other desserts in this 8-hour course. You will learn all of the decorating techniques needed to create great looking cakes for birthdays or any occasion. Topics include the basics of making and coloring icing, preparing cakes, decorating techniques using appropriate tools (including the most popular border), and making a rose for a gorgeous floral cake. Supply list will be provided at first class session. Bring paper and pen for notes. Date: Tuesdays, September 6 – 27 Time: 5:00 - 7:00 pm (4 classes) Location: James C. Bailey Center 12th Floor CAKE DECORATING - Flowers and Borders (Course II) Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Cake Decorating Build on your skills taught in Course I to master many dramatic techniques to make your cakes unforgettable. You will learn to make new borders, to give your cakes incredible dimension with the addition of bold color flow decorations, and to create lovely new flowers using Royal icing. For the grand finale, you will make and impressive flower basket cake using the interwoven basket weave technique. Supply list will be provided upon registration. BEGINNING BALLROOM DANCE This is a beginning level Ballroom Dance class for those who want to develop and/or improve their social dance skills. The instructor will provide instructions for steps, patterns and proper techniques, including ballroom dance floor etiquette. Three to five dances will be taught depending on class make-up and progress. Session 1 Date: Tuesdays, August 9 - September 13 Time: 7:00 - 8:00 pm Location: Burrow Choreography Room Session 2 Date: Tuesdays, September 20-October 25 Time: 7:00 - 8:00 pm Location: Burrow Choreography Room ADVANCED BALLROOM DANCING Built upon the basic course, this class is for students who know the basics and want to expand their knowledge. This course will add one or two new steps each lesson plus polishing what they already know. Session 1 Date: Tuesdays, August 9 - September 13 Time: 6:00 - 7:00 pm Location: Burrow Choreography Room Session 2 Date: Tuesdays, September 20 - October 25 Time: 6:00 - 7:00 pm Location: Burrow Choreography Room Must have partner for ballroom dance classes.

NOTE: All luncheons are potluck and offer a time to socialize and enjoy each other. No need to register. Luncheons will be on the 12th floor of the James C. Bailey Center.

Photography

COMPUTERS FOR SENIORS This course is for the beginner and is designed to introduce you to the computer. Basic functions of Microsoft Windows will be covered along with adjusting personal computer settings. You will also be introduced to the Internet and Email. The instructor is skilled at teaching those with little or no experience with computers. Class is limited to 12 students. Date: September 20, 22 Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Location: Computer Science Lab 9

BEGINNING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY This course is for the beginner. Time will be spent exploring the camera body (bring instruction booklet). Subjects covered are ISO, aperture, shutter speeds, manual operation, composition, lighting, and image and creative dials. Bring digital camera. ADVANCED COMPUTERS FOR SENIORS Building on the previous course, students will now learn more about the Internet and how to send emails with attachments. Microsoft Word will be covered as well. Class is limited to 12 students. Date: October 25, 27 Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Location: Computer Science Lab 9 SMARTPHONES & TABLETS The goal of this class is to help our fellow seniors get a better understanding of today’s technology. We eliminate all the confusion that smartphones represent today. You will learn how to easily operate your phone and better utilize all features. This is a handson class, so please bring your phones. ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Pre-requisite course-Intro to Digital Photography or instructor permission. This course will explore the computer of the camera. Subjects covered- Exposure compensation, computer menu, histograms, lenses, metering modes, pixels and files, elements of design. Also, capturing the best image, importing images into the computer, editing the image, sharing the image, and organizing and storing images. Bring digital camera. Painting PAINT A WATERCOLOR OF YOUR HOME Local artist Laura Walker will take you through the steps of doing an 11-by-14 watercolor painting of a house. The class is open to experienced and beginner artists. Students are required to email a photo of the house they want to paint to Laura at registration and to bring that photo with them to class. Art supplies are provided, but students are encouraged to bring any brushes they already own. Class 1 Date: September 8 Time: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Location: Wellness Center Kitchen Description: In this class, Laura will show you how to trace the copy of your photo onto watercolor paper. You will learn the tricks that professional artists use when composing their paintings and getting them onto the paper in detail. Class 2 Date: September 22 Time: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Location: Wellness Center Kitchen Description: In this class, we will paint the sky, including clouds. Then we continue the background bushes and trees. You will be learning wet on wet, color, shading, dry brush, and texturing. Class 3 Date: October 13 Time: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Location: Wellness Center Kitchen Description: During this class, we will paint the house and foreground. We will work on glazing techniques, colors, wet on wet, shading and dry brush.

OIL PAINTING OF CHRISTMAS COW Come paint this whimsical Christmas cow with local artist Laura Walker. Laura will help you paint a 16-by-20 highly textured painting of a cow, step by step. This class is open to beginners or more experienced artists. All supplies provided (including brushes). You should wear clothes that can be stained and bring brushes if you have them. Class 1 Date: October 20 Time: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Location: Wellness Center Kitchen Description: In this class, Laura Walker will help you to trace the drawing onto 16-by-20 luan, her preferred oil surface. Then we will paint the background in acrylics. This class teaches composition, transferring a drawing, layering acrylics, and detail work in acrylics. Class 2 Date: November 3 Time: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Location: Wellness Center Kitchen Description: During this class, we work on the cow. This class with focus on brush work in oil, color mixing and contrast, oil basics, and oil palette knife work. Class 3 Date: November 17 Time: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Location: Wellness Center Kitchen Description: In this class, we paint the wreath. We will be doing brush work, finishing details, as well as color mixing, shading, palette knife oil work.
