You can include a range of different types of needs for the user. You can create at least three or more suitable design ideas. You can create a presentation drawing for your final design. You can write a list of stages for the making of your product. You can use tools and materials with some accuracy. You can explain the differences between design and final product. You can create designs that consider the specification. You can describe the tools and materials needed to make your product. You can work with tools and materials with some accuracy to produce a largely complete product. You can describe the features of the product that could be improved. You can complete a Product Analysis, listing the features of other products. You can justify changes between the designs created. You can describe safety issues to be followed during the making process. You can work with a range of tools and materials with some precision to complete a product. You can test your product and record your findings and identify improvements to be made. You can look at existing products in detail to describe their function. You can create a suitable final design by closely following the needs set out in a specification. You have a clear knowledge of which tools and equipment to select and how to use them effectively and safely. You can suggest and explain significant improvements that could be made to your product. You can consider the needs of different groups of people who might be affected by the product. You can explain the process suitable for the making of your product. DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY IN YEAR 7 Design and Technology is about designing and making products to meet identified needs. This involves: Research Planning Specification Making Development of ideas Evaluation Work covered during the year “X-Factor” - students are taught graphic skills and make a pop-up card for “Myself”. They also work in one of four different specialist areas designing and making a name tag, personalised key fob or healthy packed lunch. Recycling - Students will investigate recycling and recycled products. They will produce a practical piece using recycled materials. Mini-light - Students will develop their understanding of electronics by developing a circuit to make a light for use on a key ring. Jigsaw - Students will work with plastics and wood to make a jigsaw in a frame. Home cooking - Students will begin to work with food in order to produce some food products. They will look at nutrition and dietary needs. Church windows - Students will develop a project using textiles in order to create a church window design. They will use sewing machines and will develop a range of practical skills. How parents can help at home 1. Ask your child to explain the project that they are doing - ask Why? When? How? 2. Monitor the completion of the homework booklet and other homework every week. 3. Encourage students to research ideas for projects e.g. go to the library, do some family research and take pride in their work. 4. Check the list of ingredients / equipment to be brought from home. Provide a clean tea towel and a suitable container for carrying food to and from school. 5. Encourage the use of ICT wherever possible. 6. Encourage your child to aim for the best level they can and monitor their progress.

Work covered during the year Initial design project – marketing and logo design. Product Design - Electronics timer project and vacuum forming, Spinning Tops. Food – Pizzas, Soups and Salads (comparing home made with mass produced varieties). Textiles –“Weave Away” carriers – containers for storage of jewellery, pens, playing cards etc made by recycling fabrics. How parents can help at home 1. Ask your child to explain the project that they are doing - ask Why? When? How? 2. Monitor the completion of the homework booklets and other homework every week. 3. Encourage students to research ideas for projects e.g. go to the library, do some family research. 4. Check the list of ingredients / equipment to be brought from home. Provide a clean tea towel and a suitable container for carrying food to and from school. 5. Encourage your child to work towards the best level they can and check their results as they progress throughout the year. 6. Encourage the use of ICT wherever possible. 7. Encourage your child to take pride in their work and take it home when completed.

Work covered during the year Students will only work in two areas of technology in Year 9. Students select areas to develop their work in. Groups change half way through the year. Product Design – Automata project; Speaker Project. Food – special diets e.g. vegetarian, celiac and diabetic diets, exploring a wide range of products and techniques. How parents can help at home 1. Ask your child to explain the project that they are doing - ask Why? When? How? 2. Monitor the completion of the set homework every week. 3. Encourage students to research ideas for projects e.g. go to the library, do some family research. 4. Check the list of ingredients / equipment to be brought from home.
