Reading: You can identify key features, themes and characters and select sentences, phrases and relevant information. You can use information from a range of sources.

Writing: Your writing is varied and interesting, conveying meaning clearly. You use paragraphs and a wide range of punctuation. Handwriting is adapted to a range of tasks.

Reading: You can identify different layers of meaning and comment on their significance and effect. You can give a personal response to literary texts, referring to aspects of language, structure and themes in justifying your views.

Writing: Your writing engages and sustains the reader's interest. You can adapt your style to different forms. Spelling, of irregular words is generally accurate. A range of punctuation is usually used correctly to clarify meaning.

Reading: You understand the ways in which meaning and information are conveyed in a range of texts. You articulate personal and critical responses to poems, plays and novels, showing awareness of their thematic, structural and linguistic features.

Writing: Your writing is confident and shows appropriate choices of style in a range of forms. Grammatical features and vocabulary are accurate. Spelling is correct, including that of complex irregular words. Work is legible and attractively presented.

Paragraphing and correct punctuation are used to make the sequence of events or ideas coherent and clear to the reader.

ENGLISH IN YEAR 7 Work covered during the year Your child will study each of the following: A novel Non-Fiction Poetry Unit on the Titanic “Macbeth” Autobiographical writing Moving image. “Beowolf” Each of these units has important assessed pieces, which will be included in your child’s English book and marked according to National Curriculum assessment criteria. APP sheets will be completed each half term.

How parents can help at home 1. We expect your child to write in sentences using capital letters and full stops; to spell simple words correctly; to use ‘joined-up’ handwriting.

2. Your child will be set two homeworks a week: one written, one reading. If possible, please listen to your child reading aloud from his/her library book.

3. Speaking and listening is a key part of English work. A lot of work in English involves discussion in small groups. Sometimes children will be filmed. Please encourage your child to take part in discussion.

4. It will be useful if your child has a dictionary.

5. Encourage your child to read fiction and non-fiction texts.

How parents can help at home 1. Each of these units of work has important assessed pieces which will be used to decide the teacher assessment at the end of Key Stage 3. Speaking and listening is an integral part of this assessment.

2. Encourage your child to read as much as possible at home, preferably fiction and newspapers.
