Create a Save The Date card for a wedding along the coast in Aberdovey.

Considering the location and the idea that this wedding won’t be a stereotypical wedding and more of a celebration/party.

An informal response in the format of a postcard. Considering both the fun aspects of being by the seaside as well as a more classic and sophisticated format.

The wedding is going to be very low key and informal and therefore the Save The Date card must be quite informal and fun, perhaps even including photographs of the couple.

The target audience is initially the couple getting married and then it will be all of the guests at the wedding.

Save The Date: Research When I was given the brief I decided to spend a couple of hours having a look online to look at some existing designs, relating to getting married by the sea.

The images shown demonstrate examples of work which I found particularly inspiring and hoped that I would be able to create soemthing very similar. I love the incorporation of rope in most of the examples and thought this could be suitable for my client.

Save The Date: Imagery At the start of this brief the client supplied me with a variety of images which was initially received in PDF format. Above is a breakdown of all of these images.

I found this really helpful as it gave me an insight into two routes I could take with regards to the design, either quite fun and informal, or quite corporate and professional.

Save The Date: Development I designed several ideas to start with and then sent them over to my client to see whether she liked them.

The above two examples demonstrate a combination of photography with typography and some hand rendered imagery. I was hoping to create a postcard feel with these ideas and thought they were quite appropriate.

Save The Date: Development Here I have experimented with a different photograph and used the same application of the label on the left hand side. I think the photograph of the rope ties in well with the hand rendered illustration and thought it would provide my client with another strong idea.

Save The Date: Development I wanted to try and create another design which was quite understated and sophisticated. I chose a shade of blue which resembled the sea and drew some illustrations digitally and by hand to try and create a minimal postcard, once again, supplying my client with a completely different option and taking influence from the corporate example which is shown in the imagery I received.

Save The Date: Development These designs are extremely minimalistic, and perhaps not as appropriate. However, I wanted to demonstrate the use of type and image alone to show how effective it can be.

Save The Date: Alterations Although my client loved the ideas I had presented her with, she decided that she wanted to have something much more lighthearted and fun. She came up with a rough idea of what it would look like, sent it to me and this allowed me to come up with the designs above.

At this stage I realised that I had to detach myself from my previous designs and allow the client to state exactly what she wanted.

Save The Date: Final Design These final designs are completely different from my initial ideas, and are tailor made for my client, just the way she wanted them.

The overall design works well for the purpose and I think my client was very happy with the final outcome.

Save The Date: Printing Unfortunately, when the Save The Date cards were designed, the images which my client insisted on using weren’t high enough quality to use. I had mentioned this at an earlier stage in the design process, however they still wanted them to be used.

Instead, this is what was created, with images of high enough resolution.
