AQUATIC FITNESS CLASSES Water Aerobics Shape up and slim down with invigorating water exercise! Use the water’s natural buoyancy and resistance as an excellent form of exercise for those looking for something new or those with special considerations such as: pregnancy, arthritis, knee/joint problems or other special considerations. CERTIFICATION COURSES American Red Cross Lifeguard Training & Recertification Training This course will provide participants with the following skills and certifications to become a certified lifeguard: lifeguarding, first aid, CPR-FPR, and AED training (oxygen admin. optional). Participants must pass all written and practical exams to earn certificate, must be 15 years old by the last day of class, and must attend ALL classes to be eligible to take final exams.

Course dates & information online at www.WalnutCreekArtsRec.org/aquatics LEARN TO SWIM INFORMATION According to the CDC, participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning, the second leading cause of accidental death among children ages 1-4. Swimming is a vital lifelong skill that can be mastered at any age or ability. Walnut Creek Aquatics offers expert instruction for students ranging in age from toddlers through adulthood. It’s never too late to learn to swim! With low student to instructor ratios in group lessons, we promote collaborative learning by providing a strong foundation of basic skills through proper stroke techniques and life-long swimming experiences.

Private lessons are one on one instruction for children 3 years of age through adulthood.

To find the class that is right for you/your loved one: • Please read the course descriptions carefully. It is important to register for the proper class. Please think carefully about the prerequisites. Placement in the correct class is crucial for development.

• Please know that it may take more than one class session to graduate to the next class level.

• Transfers between classes is at the discretion of aquatics staff. Though, requests to transfer prior

to the first day of the class may be considered. An evaluation of the student may take place the first – third day of a session. Instructors reserve the right to re-place a student pending skills evaluation.

• Spaces cannot be “held”. Please complete registration online or in person at Clarke or Larkey Swim Center. Full payment is required at time of registration.

• Online registration ends the Friday before swim lessons. If you wish to register after Friday you can do so in-person at either swim center.

• We do not offer credits or make-up’s for missed classes.

• Group lessons will require a minimum of two students enrolled by the Friday before the next session for the class to run. Classes are subject to cancellation and replacement of the student into a different class time/session or a class credit will be provided. Classes will be conducted rain or shine.

SWIM LESSONS Guppy Ages 10 mos-3y Parent/toddler basic water orientation class. Both parent and toddler participate in this 30-minute class. Skills include water adjustment for parents and toddlers, holding techniques, entry and exit from the pool edge, games and songs. Floating, arm and leg movement, and breath control may also be included for older toddlers. All this makes for a positive experience for the child. Classes are now 30 minutes.

Starfish Ages 3y-5y Water adjustment for young children. Playing activities in the water, students will work on bubble blowing, breath control, kicking (with support), floating (with support), and arm movement.

Seahorse Ages 3y-7y Prerequisite: Pass Starfish or ability to perform equivalent skills. Fundamental skill building class.

Students must be comfortable with floating on front and back with support and submerge head for at

least 5–10 seconds. Class objective: float without support and recover to a vertical position. Continue to work on kicking, arm strokes, and independence in shallow water.

Lobster Ages 4y-11y Prerequisite: Pass Seahorse or ability to perform equivalent skills. Focus on unsupported front and back crawl skills. Students must be able to do front and back crawl strokes with support, 10 bobs, and float unsupported for at least 20 seconds. Class objective: introduce students to the basics of elementary backstroke, diving into deep water and treading water. Continue with front and back crawl.

Seal Ages 5y-11y Prerequisite: Pass Lobster or ability to perform equivalent skills. Increase endurance of front and back crawl. Students must be able to swim front and back crawl 15 yards, do 20 bobs, glide underwater, and tread water for at least 45 seconds.

Class objective: continue with front and back crawl refinement, treading water, diving, and introduction of breaststroke, and scissor kick.

Dolphin Ages 3y-5y Prerequisite: Pass Seal or ability to perform equivalent skills. Stroke refinement, coordination and endurance. Students must be able to swim at least 25 yards of front and back crawl, 15 yards of elementary backstroke and breaststroke kick, and tread water for 1 minute. Class objective: continue stroke refinement and endurance. Introduce breast-stroke arms, dolphin kick, open turns and more diving.

Adult/Teen Ages 15y-Adult Instructors will work with students at their own pace to develop basic swimming skills. Skills will include floating, kicking, freestyle and backstroke, and more depending on individual skill level.

Private Swim Lessons Ages 3y-Adult Work with an instructor one-on-one for 25 minutes.

We focus on the things you want to learn. We encourage you to sign up for at least two private swim lessons. We cannot guarantee the same instructor each session.

The Red Road Project, Fast Eddie and Two Braids

Tice Valley Mural & Programs Tice Valley Field is getting new sports lights in 2024!

Berkeley artist, Nigel Sussman, is a professional illustrator and muralist who has a unique skillset to transform everyday scenes into storybook-like reveries. His ability to freehand paint largescale, whimsical and dynamic works of art, while employing his humor to reimagine existing places, results in wondrous imagery that delight people of all ages. He draws inspiration from local flora and fauna and the communities in which he paints. Sussman sites his artistic style as being influenced by the likes of MC Escher and Martin Handford (creator of Where’s Waldo?). You may have seen the artist, busy at work during the winter months, painting the larger-thanlife mural at Tice Valley Gym. From a distance the work appears to be an abstraction of color and shapes, but up close, the viewer is drawn into the detailed scenery portraying residents of Walnut Creek, happily bustling about in their daily affairs. Visitors and residents of Walnut Creek will revel in this mural for years to come. An official unveiling of the Where’s Walnut Creek? and opportunity to meet the artist is planned for the springtime.

QUALITY ASSURANCE: If, after attending the first class, you are not happy with the quality of the program, call us right away. Tell us what was wrong so we can make it right.

WAITING LISTS: Waiting lists are established once a program has reached maximum enrollment. If space opens, you will be notified via email. You have 48 hours to accept or decline and you must do so online.

CANCELLATION: A program may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. A full refund is available.

If a session is canceled due to weather and no make-up class is offered, a refund will be provided.

MAKE-UP CLASSES: Make-up dates for missed classes will only be granted for class cancellations resulting from inclement weather or from direction of the Arts + Recreation Department.

ADA ACCOMMODATIONS: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the City of Walnut Creek encourages those with disabilities to participate in our programs. If you have any special needs that may require specific accommodations, please call Customer Support.
