Parking Lot Pay Stations For Civic Park Parking lot pay stations are scheduled for installation in Civic Park later this year. If you have a parking permit it will continue to be valid through 2010. Students parking in Civic Park may obtain a permit through the City Hall CAE office. Effective January 1, participants will be required to pay for parking in Civic Park ; more details will be available prior to Winter Quarter enrollment.

By The Kids, For The Kids A NIGHT OF MUSICAL CABARET! Sunday, October 3rd, 5:00 pm Shadelands Auditorium, 111 N. Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek By The Kids, For The Kids is a student produced and performed charity event, the proceeds from which are donated to local child and family oriented charities: Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation and the Monument Crisis Center. Kids ages 8 through 18 are eligible to participate, with rehearsals for the show held every Tuesday and Thursday at Shadelands from 5:30-7, starting August 31 and going through September 30. Everyone showing up for rehearsals is divided up according to songs, not by age, so there will be plenty of opportunity to work with a variety of different ages. Each kid will perform in two songs plus the opening and closing numbers, all under the leadership and direction of longtime Teen Theater participants, Megan Fitzgerald and Frances Hughes. Tickets for the event are $10 with 100% of the proceeds go to charity (split evenly between Monument and Friends of Civic Arts). At the event, raffle tickets will be available for purchase, as well as refreshments, and the opportunity to make additional donations. Call the Arts Education office for more details.

Meet Newest Friends Board Member, KAREN CASSANO Interviewed by Mary Leigh Miller, board president The Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation has a new source of energy and enthusiasm – Karen Cassano! As a new board member, Karen brings a long history of involvement in the City of Walnut Creek, including the building of the new library as well as the recent “Yes on Walnut Creek” campaign. The Foundation’s newest board member has always been very concerned about the future development of the city. “I love and appreciate the arts,” she says, “although my own participation is directed towards cooking, sewing and needle work.” She joins the Friends’ board with a desire to become actively involved. “I’m a very organized person and love to see projects through to completion. I’m a person you can always count on.” Recently retired, Karen left a longtime career in the pharmaceutical industry, first as a drug researcher for the Veterans Administration in Martinez and then, after the VA closed down, as an independent contractor monitoring investigational drug trials. “I love to travel,” Karen goes on to say, “and have always had an interest in other countries and peoples.” This led her and husband, Ronald, to join a Sister Cities tour to Italy about nine years ago. “I originally thought the trip was a city-sponsored tour,” she confessed. But soon enough she learned about the existence of 957 and designed to bring cities together through cultural and economic exchange. Involvement in the organization has been a passion of Karen’s ever since. Walnut Creek has two sister cities: Siofok, Hungary and Noceto, Italy. “Our branch has sponsored exchanges as diverse as choir groups and kids’ soccer teams,” Karen says. The city of Noceto is home to a famous music conservatory. “Because of our financial assistance in the preservation of old music in their archives, Noceto presented the Walnut Creek library with a beautiful wood sculpture of a lyre,” Karen explains. This sculpture is currently on display in the new library. Karen and Ronald, owner of his own CAP firm and currently the City of Walnut Creek’s treasurer, are both Bay Area natives and have lived in Walnut Creek since 1969 where they raised three daughters.

This fall’s Master Potter Workshop features Christa Assad, a Berkeleybased artist who teaches and exhibits internationally, creating useful, classic pieces that begin on the potter’s wheel but move beyond the round. The workshop is Saturday, October 23; see page 5 for more information. Pottery Making for Raku Firing

Raku is a low-firing process. Preheated ware is put into a hot kiln with tongs, then withdrawn and usually heavily smoked. Focus on forms and techniques that work well with the Raku firing process. First half of class will include an overview of Raku and methods of making both handbuilt and wheel thrown objects that work well with the colors and character of raku glazes. Demos of glaze application, use of resists, terra sigillata and other techniques. Second half of class focuses on learning how to fire work that has been made. OPEN STUDIOS Open Studio Ceramics Open Studio provides up to 30 hours per week of supervised studio time open to all enrolled ceramics and sculpture students to enhance skills learned and knowledge of the ceramics craft and to share this interest. Hours may be adjusted at City of Walnut Creek’s discretion as needed. No instruction is provided. Student must purchase clay in the studio and provide own tools. Glazes, firing and use of studio equipment are included in the fee. Clay Arts Guild membership qualifies students for discounted open studio fee and other benefits (see above). What does the fruit of pomegranate, the flowers of dahlias, the leaves of eucalyptus and the cochineal beetle all have in common? Oh the alchemy of it all! Learn how to prepare, mordant and dye your wool yarns to make beautiful harmonious colors. Bring a bag lunch. Understanding drafting and designing your own weaving drafts will help you create signature fabrics rendering your personal style. Surface Design: Dyeing & Printing Cotton Fabric Learn the process of simple and complex pattern making in textiles. Each week we will study a technique for coloring the cloth. NEW Surface Design: Making Repeat Patterns Explore the design process for creating repeat patterns for printing on fabric. We will draw various motifs, create black and white value studies, form repeat patterns and translate those patterns into different color ways. We will not be printing on fabric in this workshop. We will be designing on paper, using either potatoes, thermofax screens or other repeat stamping methods of your choice. All studies will be executed on paper, with water soluble paints. Successful completion of the Arts Ed Basic Darkroom Class or previous experience and Arts Ed instructor approval is required. Darkrooms are available M-Th 9 am-9 pm; Fri 9 am-9 pm, Sat 9 am-4 pm. CAE Photography Forum Enjoy up to 12 digital and film meetings per year (June 1 2010 through May 31, 2011). Share images, critiques, technical developments and meet guest artists. Photoshop Elements is a basic image editing program with most of the features of Photoshop. This class concentrates on features needed to edit your digital images. Learn how to navigate your way around these programs, viewing and saving files, resizing and cropping. NEW Intro to Adobe Photoshop CS (Intro/Int) Adobe Photoshop CS is the professional standard for digital imaging. This class concentrates on features needed to edit digital images. Class covers viewing and saving files, resizing, cropping, and using the canvas. We will focus on understanding layers, image adjustments, using levels and curves, hue/saturation, color balance, black and white conversion and how to use the ìselectî and ìimage editingî tools. Finally we will discuss proper Color Management and workflow techniques. Bring a laptop computer with Photoshop CS5 (or earlier). Homework assignments given to practice the tools and techniques learned. Please come early to set up your computer before class starts.

NEW Shooting & Processing HDR Photography (Int/Adv)

Learn to capture the entire dynamic range of a scene, from brightest highlights to darkest shadows and to capture details using high dynamic range photography. This often cannot be done with a single exposure. Learn to use camera settings in your digital SLR to take multiple exposures to capture the range of light in any setting. Learn how HDR works, and when and how to use it. On the field trip, practice setting up shots, and obtain source files to use back in the classroom. Learn to use Photoshop or Photomatix to process HDR images, and how to seamlessly integrate our workflow from Adobe Bridge in Photoshop. Printmaking: Etching/Intaglio, Relief & Collograph Printmaking is one of the oldest fine art forms and has attracted artists throughout the centuries for its rich graphic qualities, the marriage of ink and paper unique to the medium and the pleasure of its processes. An introduction to three traditional fine art printmaking forms: Etching/Intaglio (multiple prints made from etched metal or metal otherwise worked with tools), Relief (multiple prints made from cutting wood planks and linoleum and related materials) and Collograph (a collage-like hybrid relief and intaglio printmaking form). Try all three forms or concentrate on one or two. Students who wish to work in Monotype printmaking (a single print made from a painted plate) are welcome to do so and instruction will be provided. NEW Multiple Drop Color Monotype Printmaking Workshop Multiple drop monotype printmaking enables a richness of layered color and texture unobtainable with conventional ‘one pass through the press’ printing. Intaglio etching can employ a broad range of approaches and techniques. One of them is soft ground etching which enables a soft pencil-like line and ‘shaded’ areas to be etched into the plate and permits the impressment of textured materials in the soft ground. Hatha Yoga Introduction and practice of yoga postures and body alignment. Through stretching and relaxation techniques, yoga postures will strengthen the body and stimulate creative energy. Torch Working for Fusers Learn to work with COE.90 glass to design elements using a hot head torch. Add these components to your fusing work to create unique fused pieces. Start with an intro to the torch and how to use rods stringers and sheet glass. Learn torching techniques including twisties, string dots, strip twisties and more. Use these techniques in hands-on torch time where each student makes elements to be fired on a sample tile using techniques learned in workshop. Int Etching: Red Brass & Sterling Silver Explore the basic techniques for etching designs onto red brass in the morning session of the class. Then apply them to sterling silver in the afternoon. Learn how to use different etching solutions and processes to etch each type of metal. We will experiment with a variety of resists, including acrylic paint, spray paint, tape, rubber cement, permanent markers, permanent ink stamping pads and rubber stamps, and PnP paper, to create textures, patterns and images on metal. Students will make a number of pieces that can be incorporated into finished jewelry. Prerequisite: helpful to have taken an earlier intro to etching course or are familiar with the process; however, this is not a requirement. Supplies: $50 payable in class. The tools and sewing techniques used for boys and girls in Kindergarten through Second Grade, such as large-eyed needles, perle cotton thread and felt are designed for small hands and make learning how to sew fun and easy. Be silly, be creative, be dramatic! Develop acting skills as you have fun playing theatre games, creating scenes and performing skits for one another. An informal presentation for friends and family will be scheduled for the last class.

A Visual Art & Design Program for High School Students For the 2010-11 school year Civic Arts will offer a once-a-week, eight-month visual art and design program for a selected group of 16 high-school students from public, private or homeschool programs. Mayo Sugano began her ballet training at the Aoyama Ballet School in Tokyo . From 1992 to 1997, Ms. Sugano was on full scholarship at the Academy of Colorado Ballet and in 1997 won the scholarship prize in the 25th Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland . She was awarded a full scholarship to study with the San Francisco Ballet School in 1997 and was one of the selected students to appear in the documentary video â&#x20AC;&#x153;Encore For Ruby: The Story of an American Ballerinaâ&#x20AC;?. Ms. Sugano joined the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company in 1998, where she danced for two seasons and danced leading roles in various ballets. She danced with the San Francisco Ballet from 2000 to 2004. Since joining Diablo Ballet in 2005, she has been featured in ballets by George Balanchine, KT Nelson and Julia Adam. Civic Arts is pleased to announce that Mayo will be teaching the Thursday session of Ballet for Children III.

• Refunds are allowed up to seven days prior to first class; a $10 service fee will be charged. Winter Ballet Gala e c n a m r o f r e P Winter Ballet Gala is a performance rich in holiday culture from around the world. The array of music and dance embraces the celebrations of all people and many countries. Holiday favorites will be featured both in the classical and contemporary styles. This dance event will embody the Holiday spirit and the joy of performance art. Selections from the magical scenes of the beloved Nutcracker will also be performed with the rich costumes and music from this cherished family ballet. Diablo Ballet professional dancers will perform along with students from the Civic Arts Education Dance Academy in the Levels Ballet II, III, IV and Professional Intermediate Program. All dancers in these programs are eligible to perform in this unique and enriching performance. No audition is necessary if in one of these CAE classes. Requirement will be attendance at rehearsals and the fee of $50. Performance Dates are: December 10, Friday 7:30PM December 11, Saturday, 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM
