Get ready for the Celebration of the Century! Together we create a better community through services that strengthen heart, mind and body. Walnut Creek will mark the 100th anniversary of incorporation on October 21, 2014. Look for an entire year of festivities to honor our past, celebrate our present, and set the tone for the next 100 years to come!

School Year Preschool offered at three locations!

A Centennial Celebration Steering Committee, chaired by community leaders Steve and Mackenzie Lesher, is busy coming up with community-friendly ways to mark this momentous occasion, with the “100 Ways to Celebrate the 100th.” Three of those 100 ways are unique Signature Events created just for the Centennial year. They include:

Centennial Heritage Day Saturday, May 17, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Borges Ranch Centennial Birthday Festival Saturday, October 18, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Shadelands Ranch Museum Fourth of July Concert & Ice Cream Social Friday, July 4, 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. Civic Park In addition to three Signature Events, the Centennial Committee is partnering with community groups to put a “centennial twist” on at least 97 events already in the works. Let’s make 2014 a year to remember! For the latest Centennial information, visit www.walnutcreek100.com.

A school year program is offered at Fine Arts Preschool at the Shadelands Art Center, Heather Farm and Civic Park Preschools. Our programs offer well-rounded, safe and nurturing environments that are developmentally ageappropriate with a focus on developing the “whole child.” The programs serve children from 24 to 66 months, offering hands-on learning through play. Expanding social/emotional, physical and cognitive development, using both an integrated and project based curriculum, provides a “child-centered” approach to learning that makes for an exciting, dynamic learning environment. We are currently taking registrations for all preschools, including our new Pre-K, a four-day-a-week afternoon program. These popular programs fill fast so call or Scholarships are available for low and moderate income families.

CERAMICS & SCULPTURE meet Roger Yee – Ceramics Instructor and Interim Ceramics Studio Manager Roger takes over a position held by Pete Coussoulis for the past 33 years. Roger, who has been teaching ceramics at CAE for the past 11 years, is very familiar with the program. “There is an intense relationship between humanity and ceramic vessels,” explains ceramics instructor and Interim Ceramics Studio Manager Roger Yee. “Clay objects such as vases, pots and urns have been used in everyday activities since humans first settled down to grow crops and domesticate animals.” Also an accomplished artist, Roger has a BA in Liberal Arts and an MFA in Spatial Art with a concentration in ceramics.

Drawing, Painting & Printmaking TEACHER FEATURE: KAREN “MOOSE” WESLER “I fell in love with etching in college at Brandeis University. I found it a magical medium: the excitement of lifting the paper off of a shiny piece of metal and seeing the plate and its mirror on the glistening sheet of paper were wondrous to me,” enthuses Civic Arts Education’s new printmaking instructor Karen “Moose” Wesler. A practicing artist for more than 30 years, she first taught for CAE in 2005 when she shared her talents in both printmaking and children’s classes. She went on to teach in a variety of schools, museums and community centers around the Bay Area and currently teaches art in the Moraga school district. Moose will focus on two kinds of printmaking—intaglio and relief—in her class, which takes place on Tuesdays from 6:00-9:00 pm.

TEACHER FEATURE: Reba Siero “I come from a math and science background that leads perfectly into weaving, which is an art of numbers and patterns that is nearly infinite,” says CAE’s decorative and fiber arts instructor Reba Siero. “I have done crafts related to fiber since I was a young girl. I took weaving at Civic Arts as a teenager, over 40 years ago!” Reba has taught rigid heddle weaving classes for CAE for several years. “It’s an elegantly simple loom that offers a nice introduction to weaving as well allowing for more complex fabric structures,” she adds.

Merit Scholars Wanted Now!

The foundation is happy to announce the second annual Kathy Nelson Merit Scholar Program. This program awards and recognizes outstanding talent within the Civic Arts programs in the fields of music and art. “The most successful musicians often reflect on the support, encouragement and mentoring they received when there were learning and improving.” says Michael Weiner, Friend’s Foundation President. “We want to join in on that process in supporting these students.” If you know of an outstanding student who would like to apply for a merit scholarship, please encourage them to apply. Details and the applications are available online at www.friendsartsed.org. Applications are due March 14, 2014. Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $250 each for Civic Arts program expenses.

CIVIC ARTS: A Truly Valuable Asset to Our Community For over 50 years the Civic Arts Education program has been the center of excellence for arts education. The arts education classes offered in this catalogue distinguish Walnut Creek from other communities and build a tremendous sense of community among the area residents.

Did You Know? • CAE runs over 680 classes, workshops and programs in visual and performing arts annually • Approximately 7,000 students of all ages attend classes over the year • Over 200 volunteers spend over 4,500 hours a year supporting CAE’s programs • Over 64 performances, concerts, and events are held at Shadelands, Del Valle Theatre and other venues • Approximately 175 part-time seasonal jobs are created for instructors, artists, teenagers, etc.

Recently, the Stanford Alumni Consulting Team (ACT) reviewed CAE’s function and its value as a part of the greater community. They reported CAE is a high quality, worthwhile and unique program. Sky: A National Juried Exhibition March 9 – May 25, 2014 Sky is an exhibition juried by DeWitt Cheng, San Francisco-based writer and critic, and Elizabeth Ferrer, Director of Contemporary Art, BRIC in Brooklyn, NYC. From ancient mythology to surreal skyscapes, artists and philosophers have long meditated on the theme of sky. This exhibition asks artists to explore how the sky, both atmospheric and conceptual, can be represented in a diverse reach of media.

Opportunities for Students: School Gallery Tours and Art in a Suitcase Workshops This season, gallery tours for all Contra Costa County schools are FREE! The Bedford also offers Art in a Suitcase, a special one-hour workshop presented in the classroom. This school year the Bedford introduced Color is Cool, a workshop that explores the elements and properties of color through hands-on art making. Art in a Suitcase Workshops are $85 per group.
