Behind the Scenes The magic of Arts + Recreation doesn’t happen spontaneously. There are many hours of training, planning and implementation that go into every detail of every program so that community members and regional visitors can experience high quality, fun and impactful events in Walnut Creek. New Mural at Walnut Creek’s Downtown Library

Artist, children’s book author, and Walnut Creek resident Netsanet Tesfay works on her bright and bold mural, Bookworm, The Tortoise and the Hare Storytime, in the Storybook Room (children’s area) of Walnut Creek’s Downtown Library. The mural, Tesfay’s first, is inspired by Aesop’s fable, The Tortoise and the Hare. This beautiful, whimsical mural was completed in October 2023. Stop by to see the completed art!

Staff Participates in Heather Farm Design Plans After the community provided feedback at the initial open house event in October, the Arts + Recreation staff got to explore the design options for the new aquatic and community center coming to Heather Farm Park. We’re dreaming about the programs and events that will be possible in the new spaces!

Civic Park Community Center Renovations

This behind the scenes uncovers what’s within the walls! Home to the copy room in the Civic Park Community Center offices, these exposed materials await their final makeover. The offices and lobby space are set to reopen in Spring 2024.

DROP-IN PICKLEBALL AT TICE VALLEY GYM Have you caught the pickleball bug? Our adult drop-in pickleball program is back at Tice Valley Gym! Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, pickleball is a fun and low-impact sport that’s perfect for adults of all ages and skill levels.

Join us Mondays through Thursdays, 10am-3pm, from November through May for drop-in play. Fees are $7 per session or $60 for a 10-visit sports pass. Please bring your own balls, paddles, and non-marking court shoes.

Volunteer Docents Needed at Borges Ranch.

Are you interested in volunteering for Walnut Creek Open Space? Do you enjoy working with kids? If so, consider becoming a Docent at Old Borges Ranch. Docents help by leading tours of Borges Ranch for local elementary classes.

Tours are designed to give kids an idea on what life was like on a working cattle ranch in the early 1900’s. The tours are fun and interactive and last approximately 1.5 hours. Training and historical info will be provided. For more information please contact Frazier@walnut-creek.org.

New Public Art Projects

On June 15, 2023, The Waymark at Walnut Creek Transit Village held a grand opening that included two public art projects approved by the Arts Commission in July 2020.

Artist Aileen Barr, based in San Francisco, created Waymark Mosaics, an extensive installation of vivid and colorful high-fire ceramic tile in abstracted natural patterns. The tilework begins in the risers of The Waymark’s Grand Staircase on Pringle Avenue and continues along the pedestrian paseo to a central courtyard, including multiple bench inserts, and panels culminating in massive bench/planter mosaics.

At the corner of Pringle Avenue and North California Boulevard, passersby will discover The Bee Effect by Dallas-based artist team Brad Oldham & Christy Coltrin. Fabricated of polished, colored stainless steel, this sculptural array features whimsical flower forms and oversize bee sculptures.

REGISTRATION POLICIES

CODE OF CONDUCT: Walnut Creek Arts + Rec strives to create an inclusive community and respectfully requests that all people in our programs and spaces (staff, students, teachers, volunteers, and guests) use spaces as intended, be considerate of others, communicate with respect, and act responsibly. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for failure to abide by the Arts + Rec Code of Conduct, available at http://bit.ly/ ArtsRecCodeOfConduct.

REGISTRATION: Registration is required for participation in programs.

Please do not attend a program if you have not been registered.

CONFIRMATION: Confirmations can be printed or emailed upon registration.

CLASS WITHDRAWALS/ REFUNDS/TRANSFERS: If you wish to withdraw or transfer, request this at least fourteen (14) calendar day before the start date for a credit or refund. A $12 fee per person, per program will be charged. No refunds or credits after this time.

Refunds are processed within three (3) weeks. No refunds for non-attendance or lack of student participation.

CAMP WITHDRAWALS/ REFUNDS/TRANSFERS: If you wish to withdraw or transfer, request this at least fourteen (14) calendar day before the start date for a credit or refund. A 5% fee per person, per program will be charged. No refunds or credits after this time. Refunds are processed within three (3) weeks. No refunds for nonattendance or lack of student participation. Withdrawals may be done online. Transfers must be done in person or over the phone.

QUALITY ASSURANCE: If, after attending the first class, you are not happy with the quality of the program, call us right away. Tell us what was wrong so we can make it right.

WAITING LISTS: Waiting lists are established once a program has reached maximum enrollment. If space opens, you will be notified via email. You have 48 hours to accept or decline and you must do so online.

CANCELLATION: A program may be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met. A full refund is available.

If a session is canceled due to weather and no make-up class is offered, a refund will be provided.

MAKE-UP CLASSES: Make-up dates for missed classes will only be granted for class cancellations resulting from inclement weather or from direction of the Arts + Recreation Department.

ADA ACCOMMODATIONS: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the City of Walnut Creek encourages those with disabilities to participate in our programs. If you have any special needs that may require specific accommodations, please call Customer Support.

PAYMENT & ACCOUNT CREDIT POLICIES: • Fee must be paid in full at time of registration by cash, credit card or check payable to the City of Walnut Creek, unless otherwise stated.

• All payments are processed upon receipt.

• Supply Fee are payable to the instructor at the first class.

Please do not include supply Fee with your registration Fee. Supply Fee are non-refundable.

• If payment plans are offered, customers must provide a credit card for automatic payment processing.

• All credits on account are valid for a maximum of one year.
