We believe the classes, programs and services offered in the Guide to Arts + Rec contribute significantly to Walnut Creek’s exceptional quality of life, whether it’s a master artist ceramics workshop, after school recreation program for middle school students, a visit to the LCA or a travel experience with other active adults.

Civic Arts Education One of Northern California’s largest community arts education programs, the city’s CAE programs reach over 7,000 students of all ages and backgrounds each year with 180 artists providing 680 classes, workshops, master classes, year-long programs, performances, exhibits, art sales and events. Pottery Making for Raku Firing (Int/Adv) Raku is a low-firing process. Preheated ware is put into a hot kiln with tongs, then withdrawn and usually heavily smoked. First half of class will focus on forms and techniques in making both handbuilt and wheel thrown objects that work well with the Raku firing process and demos of glaze application, use of resists and terra sigillata. ANCIENT WAYS CRAFTING: WALNUT DICE AND COUNTING STICKS Saturday, March 9; 10:00am – 1:00pm, Howe Homestead Park Walnut dice have been used for games since days gone by and walnut dice games are still played today. The shells are filled with natural material and adorned with abalone shell pieces or other items. Game scores are tallied using specially decorated sticks. Spend a morning learning how to make a set of dice and counting sticks. All materials and tools are provided and there is a materials fee of $10.00 per person.
