Publisher’s Note On a peaceful weekend walk with my sweet pup Sadie, traveling through the emerald green hills in the open space, we were treated to an incredible display of wildlife—deer, hawks, turkeys. It reminded me, once again, that the ultimate reward to living in Walnut Creek is the environment. Here we were only a brisk 30 minute walk away from the bustling downtown, with its world-class shopping and dining scene, but in many ways we were a world away. Second only to the top-notch public education from the Walnut Creek and Acalanes school districts that enriched our kids’ intellectual and athletic lives, Walnut Creek’s natural surroundings have kept us here for the past 20 years. As the city continues to grow, I am indebted to the efforts of citizen leaders and organizations, like Save Mt. Diablo and the Walnut Creek Open Space Foundation, who have staunchly protected our environment from sprawling residential growth. Acknowledgment is also due to the savvy city planners for their smart approach to development. Ultimately it all means denser residential development will happen in the urban core near mass transit, as opposed to the green hills that surround us. As California’s population swells, and housing costs continue to soar to ridiculous levels, every municipality in the state is being called upon to come up with solutions. Developers favor Walnut Creek primarily for its regional location and easy access to mass transit. If we look at the historical events that had the greatest transformative impact on turning our sleepy suburban enclave into a regional business, culture, dining and shopping hub, three significant projects standout—the 1951 opening of Broadway Shopping Center, the 1960 freeway opening, and the opening of the Walnut Creek BART station in 1973. In this issue, you get a glimpse at some of the major projects underway in 2018, adding hundreds of new apartments, condos, and single family homes to our landscape. Some like the Riviera, Vaya, and Bart Transit Village are designed for young millennials who commute to work, but want to live in a plush urban/suburban place. Looking forward, change is simply inevitable. Some in the business community are talking about the need to repeal Measure A, which means raising height limits, while others are focused on finding balance; the place where government, business, and citizen interests meet. We live in the “jewel of the east bay.” Let’s be grateful for the beauty that surrounds us.

The City of Walnut Creek has extended its moratorium on commercial cultivation and retail sales into 2018. talk/trends 2018 Sea of Change California Bans Recreational Abalone Diving If sport diving for abalone is on your bucket list, take it off. Biologists say the species is on the brink of collapse. The Fish and Game Commission in San Diego voted unanimously to close the 2018 recreational fishing season after a warning from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife that the population is in severe decline. Mass starvation due to a depletion of kale growth was cited as a major reason.

Craving Crab? After a robust start to the Bay Area’s Dungeness crab season last November, supplies all but disappeared by Christmas. The reason? Crabs off California’s northern coast — Mendocino, Humboldt, Del Norte counties — had not reached maturity yet, delaying the opening of this vital region for crab fishing. On January 15, the crabs were deemed ready for harvesting and the commercial fishing season opened. By all accounts, the quality of crab this second phase of the season is predicted to be good. Prices for the catch have not been set.

NEW YEAR, NEW RESTAURANTS Our picks for the buzziest eats.

Opening in the former Tommy Bahama store on Mt. Diablo Boulevard in Walnut Creek is the Napa hot spot, Bounty Hunter. Look for hard to find wines, retail bottle sales, and courtyard dining. The menu features sandwiches, salads, and signature barbecue dishes, like the BH Beer Can Chicken, a whole Cajun-spiced free range bird perched on a beer can.

The culinary team, who brought Broderick to Walnut Creek, has a notable new project in the works. Restaurateur Rolla Ghaben and her brothers are opening Batch & Brine in Lafayette. Artisan burgers, fresh salads, and signature sandwiches, like pastrami lovers "Lower East Side," highlight the menu along with a mix of Mediterranean flavors. A big bar and outdoor patio will provide comfortable spaces for cocktails.

Pacific Catch is bringing its brand to South Main Street opening a new eatery at The Agora. The west coast fish house specializes in fresh fish and seafood dishes inspired by Asia, Latin America, and Polynesia—poke bowls, fish tacos, rice bowls and daily fish specials — plus a full bar with handcrafted cocktails, California wines, and microbrews.

CITY NEWS

A LOOK AT WHAT’S AHEAD A proposal to extend downtown parking meter time limits from two to four hours. Hourly parking rates may fluctuate quarterly based on time of day and demand. A smart app bike share program, Lime Bike, which launched in Shadelands Business Park rolls downtown. New aluminum seating areas and colorful planters spring up around town.

Urban Beautification Think green, blue, and bright red. A kaleidoscope of colors are cropping up as giant plant pots, big belly trash compactors, public art wraps, and outdoor seating areas enhance the city’s environment. Driven by the community branding plan created by Destination Development International for the Walnut Creek Downtown business association in 2012, the goal is to create an inviting, artsy vibe for residents and visitors.

DEVELOPMENT SURGE

Tracking plans on major projects that will transform the community Walnut Creek is entering a new era. Many of the most exciting changes are happening downtown. Mixed-use projects, apartments, condos, new homes, and hotels continue to spring up as developers favor the city for its transit-oriented framework and central location. Here are a few of the projects leading the pack.

1. Walnut Creek BART Transit Village After close to twenty years of planning, construction on Phase One of the Walnut Creek BART Transit Village kicked-off last fall with initial work on a new 900-stall parking garage, covered bus facility, BART police station, passenger drop-off area, and enhanced bike and pedestrian paths. The garage is

24

walnut creek / winter 2018

expected to open in late 2018, followed by development of a 596-unit apartment complex, and 12,000-square-feet of ground floor retail complex. Additional underground garages in future buildings will increase the parking supply for residents and shoppers. The entire project is expected to be completed in five years. 2. VAYA Just across the street on Ygnacio Valley Road and Lacassie Avenue, Blake Griggs Properties’ rental apartment complex, Vaya, will add 178 units of new housing to downtown Walnut Creek this year. Luxury amenities include a community garden, rooftop lounge and movie areas, plus 223 parking stalls.

3. MARRIOTT RESIDENCE INN A six-story, 160-room Marriott Residence Inn is under construction on North Main Street. Designed for long-term stays, suites will come equipped with spacious kitchens and appliances, as well as concierge services like dry cleaning and laundry. An underground garage will provide room for 104 vehicles, with offsite parking for another 40 planned across the street. 4. HILTON GARDEN INN Tharaldson Hospitality Management is working with city planners for approval of a plan to construct a three story, 127-room Hilton Garden Inn at 490 Lawrence Way on the cityowned corporation yard. Plans call for an upscale property with a pool and ample parking on the 2.226 acres adjacent to Interstate 680.

DON’T THINK ABOUT JELLY DONUTS. “When setting goals, consider what you want. For example, when you think of healthy food, visualize fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Because your brain thinks in pictures, it’s easy to be drawn to these choices. If you want to get healthy or lose weight, don’t think about the sweet and salty delights you have to give up.” THINK POSITIVE. “Sports psychologists tell athletes to focus on making the shot. If a golfer is over a putt and starts to think, “I hope I don’t miss” the chance of missing is greater than if he or she thinks “I got this.” If a basketball coach yells to a player, “don’t miss,” it is more likely the player will focus on missing rather than making the shot. The point is to use positive words and images.” TRAIN YOUR MIND. “The same principle applies to setting professional goals. Train your mind to have positive thoughts. Words, along with images, have power. Business opportunities are a lot like dating. If before the first date, you’re already worried about what you’re going to serve at the wedding and the name of your first child, then you’re going to have problems. Take one positive step at a time. Take the meeting, go on the first date, focus on what you want, and go find it.” TELL PEOPLE WHAT YOU WANT. “Once you are clear on what you want, start telling people. The more people you share your vision with, the more likely you are to obtain it. Keep the pictures of success, joy, fun, and endless possibilities in your mind. Or on a photo board. Make sure the picture in your mind is what you want and go for it. And don’t think about jelly donuts.” –PK

But now as it rebounds, Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) welcome back visitors with curated “green” wine-tasting itineraries to match every viticultural mood. NVV’s Napa Green program—one of the most comprehensive environmental accreditations in the wine industry—protects the land and conserves natural resources from soil to bottle. More than half of Napa County’s vineyard acreage, and over 60 of its wineries, are certified Napa Green. ➤ winter 2018 / walnut creek

tour

On a recent visit, we went “green” on the Eco Chic tour in and around St. Helena. First stop is Chateau Boswell, a boutique gem and the first Napa Valley winery to achieve Napa Green Winery status. Unofficially dubbed ‘the Queen of Napa Green’ for her continued efforts to reduce water and energy use, proprietress Susan Boswell instills a sustainable ethos in her 17 labels of hand-crafted, small lot varietals. Inside the spectacular 65 foot-under-earth wine cave and tasting room, preserved nooks exhibit the area’s volcanic geological history. Initially under the direction of famed winemaker André Tchelistcheff, Chateau Boswell was first known for luscious Cabernet Sauvignon but since then has expanded its portfolio to include Russian River Chardonnays and Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs. ••

Next it’s a short trip to Phifer Pavitt, winner of the Great Wine Capitals’ 2017 Sustainable Wine Tourism award, for “Date Night” Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Owners Suzanne Phifer Pavitt and Shane Pavitt named their wines after all-important weekly date nights when many life decisions were made, including the decision to purchase the land for their winery.

The duo has built a sustainable environment from the ground up: an eco-chic tasting ‘barn’ is insulated with recycled blue jeans; a carefully crafted free form wood countertop floats; the floor is hand stenciled and rustic wire chandeliers illuminate the space. And of course, their vineyards are farmed using organic and sustainable methods. ➤

Last stop is Stony Hill Vineyard, the oldest continuously operating winery in the Spring Mountain District. This small family winery started making white wines more than 60 years ago, and recently a Cabernet Sauvignon made its way into their stellar line-up. Stony Hill prides itself on creating ‘non-interventionist’ wines from flavored fruit grown in rocky, hillside soils. Founders Fred and Eleanor McCrea have passed the reigns to granddaughter Sarah McCrea who continues to dry farm the certified Napa Green Land, just as it’s been tended since the winery’s inception.

The resort blends seamlessly into the surrounding oak and redwood tree-studded terrain. Chef Victoria Acosta crafts a culinary menu of delectable and healthy dishes that utilize ingredients from the property’s multi-acre organic garden. A stay here is not complete without a visit to the spectacular spa. Holistic facial and body treatments take place in serene private suites where trained therapists apply certified organic, non-toxic products. Afterward, lounge in the relaxation garden and sample house-dried fruits, nuts, grains, and nourishing elixirs. ••

Continue the sustainable spirit of your weekend with a meal at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch, a true farm-to-fork dining experience that showcases the talents of local farmers, cattle ranchers,

Find Balance Hardcore workouts at boutique studios and lux fitness clubs thrive in Walnut Creek—from kickboxing to weight training to dance to barre classes, locating an intense fitness class is no sweat. Instructors take students on athletic journeys through imagery choreographed to varied tempos of music. But while a heart-pumping workout can be satisfying, it's also important to slow down and find balance. If you’re up on the latest fitness trends, your day might look a little different this year: hot yoga or a run before work, meditation at lunch, and cryotherapy before dinner.

Do Yoga With so many styles, yoga trends are constantly changing. But the benefits from this ancient exercise remain the same—it relieves stress, strengthens your body, and boosts your mental health. Hot Yoga is hot

right now. At Corepower workouts take place in rooms of varying degrees. For an extra-challenge, add free weights to your routine. corepoweryoga.com This hot little studio just opened a second location in Danville. At Jenni Wendell’s Just Be Yoga, classes stretch the mind and body. Students in dynamic Vinyasa classes enjoy a rigorous, sweaty workout set to music in rooms up to 88 degrees. If heats not your thing, they also offer an array of other classes. justbeyoga.com

Just Do It Sometimes you just want to sweat alone. FlyWheel expanded its fitness reach with “Fly Anywhere,” an online platform that lets you stream live high performance indoor cycling workouts right into the comfort of your living room. All you have to do is

purchase one of their hi-tech bikes, along with a monthly subscription, for real time feedback on performance. It seems the next generation in exercise DVDs is here, only with a much bigger price tag.

Be Mindful Meditation has hit it big again. Working a little mindfulness into your day can go a long way toward improving mental acuity. And it’s not just for yogis. Fitness instructors of all stripes are incorporating five minutes before and after classes to give you time to unplug quietly during the day. The Valsalva maneuver, used in many weightlifting workouts, involves taking a deep breath before lifting and holding it while you lift. At the release, you exhale. If you’re new to meditating, simply sitting and breathing could be the first step.

“The release of feel good endorphins elevates your mood and can block pain reception signals. You can experience improved range of motion with pain reduction almost immediately,” he says. Unlike others in the market, US Cryotherapy’s cold chambers treat the whole body, head to toe. The goal is to drop your body’s temperature by 30 degrees for two to three minutes. You’re given a beanie, a face mask, mittens and booties to protect extremities from frostbite. Music pumped into the chamber helps get your cool groove on. Red light therapy, cryotherapy facials and targeted cold treatment are also offered. The German hydro massage table is not to be missed. uscryowc.com

Get Frosted Once only available to elite athletes and super rich patrons of exclusive European spas, cryotherapy is now popping up all over. After three minutes in the deep freeze room at US Cryotherapy’s new Walnut Creek facility, your cells will be singing, while letting go of toxins, stress, and pain. Cryotherapy uses low temperatures to flash freeze your body. Health benefits from “freezing” range from decreasing inflamma-

After the shock of an icy three minute blast, blood vessels constricted by the cold open in warm air, a process called vasodilation, leaving you looking and feeling great. Just Float The cozy darkness envelopes and invites sleep, but instead you’re wide awake, attuned to your breathing. You are weightlessly suspended in the tranquil warmth of an infinite universe, while getting a boost for your skin, muscles and joints. That’s the beauty of floating in a flotation tank. Also known as isolation tanks and sensory deprivation tanks, they’ve been around since the 1950s. Thanks to

wellness guide superstar athletes like Tom Brady and Steph Curry, they’re making a comeback. When Rebecca Sgambati, a Walnut Creek mom, engineer, and avid basketball fan, saw an ESPN clip about the Warriors using floatation tanks, she wanted to try it. She got the chance on vacation in Maui, but back home, the nearest tanks were in San Francisco. So she and her husband David decided to open Peak Performance Float in a quiet corner of Shadelands Business Park. “Throughout our lives, we have to hold up physically and emotionally. It’s amazing how much of our brain capacity is used to interface with the environment,” Rebecca says. “Floating creates a womb-like space of soundless darkness to help the brain and body relax.” It takes about 45 minutes of floating for the brain to reach that meditative state.

Peak includes two kinds of tanks. One is the traditional model, a flotation pod with a hinged lid. The other is a high-ceilinged vault. Both contain 10 inches of filtered water and over 1,000 pounds of dissolved Epsom Salt heated to 93.5 degrees. For stress relief, Peak recommends floating every other week, and two to three times a week to alleviate chronic pain. peakfloat.com

Get Slimmed

A trained bariatric specialist, Dr. Gartner grew weary of performing gastric bypass procedures and treating the end result of obesity and decided instead to help people shed pounds before reaching crisis proportions. So she opened a private practice focused on wellness and weight loss offering patients different nutrition options. Her 4-3-3-1 Program is a whole foods diet based on eating small portions of protein and vegetables every four to five hours. The Metabolic Reset Program includes three protein shakes and one low carb meal. Patients are also prescribed appetite suppressants if necessary. She also recommends cutting alcohol to one to two drinks per week and destressing instead with meditation. And for those bulges that won’t budge after a successful weight loss journey? Face Forward Putting your best face forward just got easier. Medical-grade skin care procedures and regular facials improve your glow over time. New technology continues to advance the results of non-invasive procedures. Lasers are being combined with different modalities as medical professionals customize treatments. Dr. Valerie Schneider is piloting micro-needling at her Lucent Aesthetic med spa. The treatment gently perforates your face with tiny needles to generate new collagen and repair aged or scarred skin. Micro-needling reportedly achieves the same results as lasers, but requires less time and money. Dr. Schneider adds skin growth factor serum to her technique. “It’s like aerating your lawn and adding fertilizer at the same time,” she explains. Because the serum is sourced from cells of discarded neonatal foreskins, it’s rich in highly active human

40

growth factors. Used for skin cancer and burn patients, the serum is FDA approved. “It’s the same principle as vampire facials which use spun blood cells,” she explains. “Except it costs a few hundred instead of a few thousand dollars.” Dr. Schneider recently stepped away from her role as a pulmonary physician to move into the world of aesthetics. While becoming certified in lasers and injectables, she discovered the benefits of micro-needling. The micro-injuries that the procedure creates trigger the body's natural healing process. The subsequent cell turnover, and collagen and elastin production can reduce lines, wrinkles, scars, age spots, and shrink pores. And it’s not just for aging skin. Dr. Schneider says she helped a 19-year-old with severe acne gain the confidence to leave his house and resume a normal life. lucentaesthetics.com

“I personally enjoy the wines I’ve chosen for Gott’s Walnut Creek and I know each winemaker. It’s a pleasure to feature friends’ wines in our restaurants.”

Founded in 1999 in Saint Helena by Joel and his brother/partner Duncan Gott, the upscale burger chain has expanded to Napa’s Oxbow Market, San Francisco’s Ferry Building Marketplace, Palo Alto’s Town & Country Village, San Francisco International Airport, and now to Marin and Walnut Creek. The diner’s design mixes rural roadside elements with contemporary industrial touches, including an entire wall of rollup garage doors for al fresco dining. The large dining room, bookended by the order counter and the bar/lounge, overlooks a glass-fronted kitchen. Coming from five generations of California vintners, it was only natural for Gott to become a wine and food

entrepreneur. Born in Napa Valley and raised in the Sierra Foothills, he worked at Sonoma’s Kenwood Winery after high school before joining a real estate firm. Soon after, Joel and Duncan purchased a market in Calistoga, transforming it into a gourmet retail and wine shop. Winemaking came next, producing Zinfandels that garnered hearty industry praise. In 2009, he began a joint venture with Trinchero Family Estates for the marketing and distribution of his eponymous Joel Gott Wines. Flavors at Gott’s Roadside are spot-on. Niman Ranch beef burgers are cooked medium and garnished with iceberg lettuce, tomato, secret sauce, and an optional layer of American cheese, then served on a perfectly baked bun. The large format menu features a dozen meat and seafood choices plus fresh salads, and of course French fries. Crowd pleasers include Ahi Poke Crispy Tacos, Citrus Avocado Chop Salad, and the vegetable Impossible Burger. Today, Peet’s boasts more than 14,000 locations worldwide. And while locals love their brew, it’s a pretty exciting time for independents too. Caffeine connoisseurs are lining up to get their artisanal fix at a new wave of independent coffee joints. Here are a few of our favorites. ➤

Pacific Bay When Chris Fong purchased Pacific Bay Coffee Co. in 2010, his goal was to make Walnut Creek notorious for top shelf blends. From his lap-top friendly café on Newell Avenue, Fong meticulously roasts his own beans into medium blends, then turns them into foaming works of art. “Coffee is my passion and I’m in a happy place when I roast it,” says Fong, a former barista at Pete’s Coffee. “This city is recognized for so many great restaurants, I want to see our robust coffee scene garner that same attention.” Fong’s dream is now a reality. Pacific Bay snagged seven medals at the Golden Bean Roaster’s Competition in Portland, for a third year in a row. The awards don’t lie. The espresso is spot on and the cappuccinos are a stand-out. pacificbaycoffee.com

Philz A relative new comer to the WC coffee scene, Philz Coffee has already garnered a cult-like following. From its spacious outpost in a strip mall on S. California Boulevard, fans line up for their daily brews. Founded in San Francisco by Phil Jaber in 2002, Philz now boasts dozens of coffee shops across the West Coast, famous for grinding beans one fresh cup at a time. Their signature is the Mint Mojito, a delicious cold-brewed blend of fresh cream, brown sugar and mint with some caramel notes. They also do croissants and sandwiches, plus

a mouthwatering avocado toast. Baristas here take pride in energizing their patrons with a heaping side of hospitality. “We’re not making 1,000 cups a day; we’re making one cup a thousand times a day. We offer a personal touch,” says head barista Elizabeth Aguirre.

Coffee Shop Downtown on Locust Street, Coffee Shop is the definitive hot spot. Acclaimed for its modern vibe, long community tables, and artisanal blends, it’s a haven for boomers and millennials alike. Foodies find comfort in the stash of 54 Mint pastries, organic smoothies, and host of fresh sandwiches. Out front, a parklet provides extra space to read or plug in for a podcast. As the “away-from-home” coffee market surges, Coffee Shop is tapping into the trend, opening additional locations in Lafayette and Concord. “We offer a little something for everyone,” says Vanessa Jonkers, head barista and manager. “We see suits, moms, and workout groups. We love the diverse crowd that we serve.” Maple bourbon and pumpkin spiced lattes are popular during winter months, so are peppermint mochas.

Is coffee good for you? The news about coffee just keeps getting better. It’s linked to a lower risk of heart failure, stroke, and coronary heart disease, as long as you don’t drink more than six cups per day.

Geek Meets Chic Hometown Boy Debuts Hip ‘80s-themed Arcade Bar at Former WPLJ’s

W

By Dale Tafoya

When Revenge of the Nerds hit movie theaters in 1984, Enrique Montero—was eight years old and a student at Walnut Creek’s Murwood Elementary School. Like so many of that era, Montero became obsessed with the MTV pop culture of the 80’s, rocking’ parachute pants, and breakdancing to Beverly Hills Cop’s “Axel F” at Larkey Park as a teenager. Now, 33 years later, the 41-year-old nightclub promoter has channeled his inner passion for the “age of the blockbuster” into Retro Junkie Bar. Montero spent almost two years facelifting the 52-year-old building on North Main Street, once home to WPLJ’s, before opening his new club. A former bartender at WPLJ’s, his journey has taken him full circle, returning to Walnut Creek after spending seventeen years working in the San Francisco nightclub scene. Pasted on the walls are larger than life, digitally tattooed murals of cinematic icons like Andre the Giant, Prince, Al Pacino, Patrick Swayze, a scene from the movie Stand By Me, and a hybrid of Mike Tyson dressed up as Mr. T.

58

walnut creek / winter 2018

“I wanted art that would engage customers in the retro vibe; conversation pieces,” says Montero. “It’s fun listening to people try to figure out who’s on the walls. Only a true pop culture pro can name everyone. It’s only happened once.” Besides the murals, Retro Junkie features other clever throwback amenities. Dozens of flashy skateboard decks are showcased in the back game room with “old school” video games like Ms. Pac-Man and two pool tables. Star Wars and Addams Family-themed pinball machines are stationed behind the hi-tech dance floor. Live bands perform on Friday and Saturday nights and DJs spin throwback sets during the week. “This bar is special to me in so many ways,” says Montero. “I get to give back to my hometown with cool entertainment and a nightclub experience that’s done right. It’s a place for friends to hang out and celebrate birthdays. Or guys to gather for beers and few games of pool. There’s nothing like it in the area. I’m from the old school, this is my thing. I’m really excited to have finally launched my vision.” 2112 N. Main Street, WC, retrojunkiebar.com.

1 large eggplant, cubed 1 cauliflower, chopped ½ cabbage, chopped 1 broccoli, chopped 1 celery root, cubed 1 bunch spinach, sliced 1 bunch of cilantro, chopped 1 cup cooked garbanzo beans 1 ½ cups tomato sauce 2 cups vegetable stock ½ cup golden raisins 2 T olive oil 3 T mixed spices such as cinnamon, cumin, curry DIRECTIONS In a large pot sauté onions and garlic in olive oil for 4 minutes. Add all other vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and vegetable stock and bring to a boil. Let simmer for 15 minutes, until vegetables are tender. Add beans, raisins, and spices. Let cook for 3 minutes more and add cilantro. Remove from heat and serve over cous cous with a garnish of Kalamata olives if desired.

DIRECTIONS Add salt to cabbage. Let sit for 15-20 minutes, then gently massage mixture to aid in release of liquid from cabbage. Pack into a quart-sized canning jar until brine rises at least one inch above cabbage, leaving two inches of space at top. Fold and push reserved cabbage leaf into mixture, filling the last two inches of space. Pack remaining mixture into another canning jar. Close tightly and place both jars in a glass container to catch possible juice overflow. Find a place a in your home to put your kraut during fermentation that maintains a temperature of 64-70°F. After 5 days, gently release pressure by opening jar slowly so briny liquid does not bubble out. Quickly close lid and in 5 days repeat procedure. After another 5 days, taste kraut to determine if it is sour enough. We like a 21 day ferment. Once the kraut is to your liking, place it in the refrigerator where it will keep for 6 months or more. Enjoy it alone, with sausages, or in a salad.

Last December, Walnut Creek Downtown and Walnut Creek Magazine kicked-off the first annual Holiday Stroll at the Lyric Apartments plaza on Locust Street. Free swag bags went to the first 100 attendees, carolers and musicians entertained, and merchants stayed open late with sips, savors, and special deals. 7

A look back

Sixty years ago, the population in Walnut Creek was 9,000. Mel’s Drive In, where Fuddruckers sits today, was a big teen hangout, and Elvis Presley was their idol. The first fast-food restaurant, Hokey’s Burgers, opened in town and sold hamburgers for $.19 cents each. Broadway Shopping Center and Kaiser Hospital, which had opened a few years earlier, changed the landscape in Walnut Creek forever. While the city was the envy of other cities for its steady stream of retail sales tax revenue, with growth came traffic and congestion. Traffic along Main Street, the only main thoroughfare in town, came to a stand-still on Saturdays and weekday afternoons. By 1960 some of the congestion was alleviated when a new state freeway opened. *Source: 150 Years in Pictures/An Illustrated History of Walnut Creek, by Brad Rovanpera
