Hope Island A Place of Imagination Maybe you can see it on a clear day, if you wait for the darker skies to pass. The reflections of light in different colours shining in the surrounding water. Hope doesn´t disappoint, because it has never promised anything. Hope Island is a place for everyone, but the seas might be rough, dare to confront the swell and hope will change the trajectory of your life. Although the world still grapples with the ever-present threat of the Covid-19 pandemic, the light from the other side has begun to creep in bringing with it a sense of hope. The pandemic has filtered through the excess of life, indicating to the world what is important and worthy of nurturing. Being forced to face resistance and darkness in life has subsequently created the space for new meaningful conversations and more light, gratitude and hope. After the isolation of lockdown, Marit Geraldine Bostad sought renewed connection with the outside world and a freer approach to abstraction. In her most recent studio sessions the artist has felt the joy of a complete surrender to the artistic process, free of the limitations of references or fear. Colour palettes seemingly select themselves, the canvases mirroring the joy felt by Geraldine before the painting process begins. The prospect of a physical exhibition after the tumultuous months of cancellations and postponements propelled the artist to transplant her inner hope onto physical canvases. Paintings queued in the artist’s head as she feverishly created canvases trying to match her physical production with the newfound joy and creativity flowing through her. This release of energy and hope for the world led the artist to the title of this exhibition: Hope Island. Hope is a necessity for the world to carry forward as everyone adapts, learning a new way of being and navigating through the new realities of life post-pandemic. Through a series of paintings on canvas, Marit Geraldine Bostad investigates the themes that are central to her artistic research, the inner psyche, memories and human interaction. She blends her colours by pouring paint directly onto the canvas using a variety of tools, seldom using the paintbrush to create diverse, versatile effects with broad expressive strokes. Marit Geraldine explores the Nordic Colour tradition in a bold new direction, blending tone to tone pastels with sparks of fluorescent, manifesting her own personal psychic state onto the canvas. She builds up and breaks down the diverse elements of her experience and brings them together in a new plastic dimension. Through this, she expresses universal archetypes that transcend the particular conditions of her own life, setting the scene for the audience to bring their own meaning to her work.

The impetus of her paintings is emotionally charged. Describing her practice as a kind of therapy and a way to switch off from the flurry of conscious activity in her mind, Bostad’s feelings and expressions in her work are highlighted by their lasting impression on the viewer. Her abstract paintings are the result of an inner journey in her subconscious where the goal is to attempt to erase the fine line between the conscious and subconscious, allowing the canvas to become the tangible manifestation of her inner psyche. Memory and people are the themes from which she draws inspiration and colors are the mediumto transpose their essence on the canvas, this results in the creation of unique vibrant and emotional paintings.

“Abstraction is a powerful tool for breaking from the expectations of the human experience. The abstract painter operates in a realm separate from the conditions of the everyday, experimenting within a new flexible dimension where the conscious and subconscious meet.

“The most inspiring moments are when the paint itself find new ways, takes interesting and unexpected turns across the canvas. At those moments I need to use my intuition, to either follow or reroute. I don´t listen to music when I work, I use silence as a mentor - to enable me to hear my own voice. I am constantly in a dialogue with my material, it is all about give and take.â€?

Sculptural Series In 2019 Marit Geraldine began exploring texture. In the process of making her signature works she saved access paint from her big canvases and wanted to make more art instead of throwing away, polluting the environment. “ I experimented a lot, transferred the paint from surface to surface, mixing the colours until I was satisfied with the transitions. It was like building mountains of colours. I found this way of working with the acrylics, through a mistake one day in studio, (but in art history lots of artists have found valueble insight through mistakes: ) I couldn´t forget about the special surface I created, how it made me feel, and have continued to explore and build these ever since. They take forever to develop, and the process is so different from my signature works, but I love the slow cooking, the meditative side of building these, a patient way of recreating a secret dreamâ€?.
