Android design language relies on traditional typographic tools such as scale, space, rhythm, and alignment with an underlying grid. Successful deployment of these tools is essential to help users quickly understand a screen of information. To support such use of typography, Ice Cream Sandwich introduced a new type family named Roboto, created specifically for the requirements of UI and highresolution screens. The current TextView framework supports regular, bold, italic, and bold italic weights by default.

There are old heroin addicts. There are old tramps, old soldiers and even old smokers. But there are absolutely no old fat people. None. Kill you quicker than anything for sure, the suet. And look around. A king-sized unholy fat storm has crept up on us in fun-sized chunks and bite-sized nibbles. The only places where people aren't predominantly overweight are in magazines and on television. We're deceived by the media into thinking we're all skinny and beautiful. We're not. It's normal to be overweight and a significant proportion of the population is obese. This all really hit me when I was in Russia. No flab there. None. You just don't see it. It's like being in a film. One in three residents of Boston, Lincolnshire, is clinically obese. One in three people obese. Actually, soil and agriculture don't get any better anywhere in the world than in Lincolnshire. People in Boston could be eating better than ever before, but it seems a place disconnected from the land that surrounds it. I was there recently, and there were lots of restaurants but I couldn't find anywhere that wasn't serving fried, fast or fattening food. I ended up eating Thai. It was truly awful. And I suppose that's the worst thing of all. No one gets obese from eating nice food. Our national cuisine is evolving, but it's still based on the idea of spending the whole day down a mine doing press-ups or banging big bits of steel together – but hardly anyone does that any more. Being the right weight is going to be more and more of a struggle as time goes on, and I really don't know what happens next. A hundred or so years ago, we weren't quite so fragrant. I think I'm right in saying most people didn't wash. In 2010, I think I'm right in saying that most people don't exercise. In another hundred years' time that might seem just as strange. I'm very hungry at the moment. I always have been a hungry boy, but now I am especially ravenous because I've given up smoking and taken up running. Cross-country running. I like it so much I've decided to invest in some spikes. I love it,

especially at this time of year. In summer it's too hot, but January is perfect. Especially at night with a head torch on, padding silently through the darkness. I particularly like it when it's raining or windy or inclement. Once my heart starts whirring, I'm invincible. I don't know why we're wired to never want to exercise. It is still with a heavy heart that I contemplate the idea. It's not until I'm doing it that I start to like it, but there is absolutely nothing horrible about it, really – nothing near as bad about a press-up as parking a car or being stuck in a queue at a checkout. Exercise is absolutely guaranteed to lift one's mood. It's a drug. For the first few cigarette-free weeks I was running 10 miles a day, five days a week. I always start smoking again because I put on weight, and because I'm watching how much I eat I'm spending more time thinking and reading about food than ever. It tastes so much better when I'm really hungry.
“Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.”
If you really hate the idea of running, there's fasting – I did it for a couple of weeks, and giving up food altogether was about as hard as giving up cigarettes. After a week or so I hardly thought about it at all until I smelled it. It's worth remembering the wise words of Kate Moss, who once said (controversially, it should be noted), “Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.”

Infantrymen and engineers steered four small robots around the buildings and terrain at the McKenna Urban Operations Complex last week to get a better idea how they might help Soldiers in recon missions and the detection of improvised explosive devices. It was part of the Ultra-Light Reconnaissance Robot limited objective experiment sponsored by the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization. Fort Benning's Maneuver Battle Lab conducted the assessment, which began Feb. 13 and ended Friday. Key players also included the Robotic Systems Joint Products Office; Maneuver Support Center of Excellence from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; Maneuver Center of Excellence Counter Improvised Explosive Device training team and Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory. Project officials said robot weight, size and power requirements must be measured against its capabilities and limitations in defeating IED threats. Finding the right balance was a major focus area in the experiment. Army and Marine small units engaged in maneuver, movement and protection operations don't have the responsive capability to detect, identify and monitor IED and other threats in confined spaces such as culverts at standoff distances, officials said. If a possible IED threat is detected but can't be confirmed because of its camouflaged location, small units must call on limited engineer and explosive ordnance disposal resources, or a
Soldier has to get close enough to visually confirm the threat -- a time-consuming and dangerous process. "The point is to keep Soldiers out of harm's way and danger -- and put a robot there instead," said Maj. Joseph Pruitt of the Maneuver Support Battle Lab from Fort Leonard Wood. "Ideally, we want a robot that weighs nothing and does everything." The candidate robots -- Dragon Runner 10, Armadillo, 110 First Look and Recon Scout -range from 11 to 1.2 pounds. All are designed to be thrown. Each was put through its paces in a series of different missions carried out by eight Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, out of Fort Stewart, Ga., and eight more from the 428th Engineer Company, 397th Engineer Battalion, a Reserve unit based in Wisconsin. Product managers and evaluators said they examined various robotic capabilities, including durability, ease of use, weight, range and camera clarity. It supports the MCoE's "Squad: Foundation of the Decisive Force" initiative by advancing possible lightweight robotic technology solutions. "It's too early to tell how effective they'll be," said Maj. James Collins, the Maneuver Battle Lab's unmanned systems chief. "Soldier survivability is the main thing we want to accomplish. If they will save lives, it'll be very important to field them. "It's all about the squad right now trying to
overpower or overmatch the enemy," Collins said. "Robots have the potential to fill some of these capability gaps at that level." The lightweight recon robots can be strapped to a Soldier's back. Once deployed on the ground, "anybody who's played Game Boy can pick this up and operate it," said Spc. Jonathon Near of 3-7 Inf. He said the robots could mitigate casualties by acting as surrogates for U.S. personnel on the battlefield. "Normally, it would take a fire team to go into a room to see if it or another one is boobytrapped. If you can send a robot instead, it could save lives," Near said. "It lowers the risk of me running out there or sending other guys in to find out what's behind that door or in that culvert." The Soldiers learned how to put the robots together, employ and disassemble them. Staff Sgt. Rodolfo Miranda, another Fort Stewart Infantryman, said a couple of robots need minor improvements to better handle the rugged terrain of Afghanistan. But he sees how the systems could be useful downrange. "Having robots to send out there and do recon for us will definitely save lives on the battlefield," he said. Collins said the Maneuver Battle Lab will crunch data and assess Soldier feedback as part of a thorough post-experiment analysis. Meanwhile, JIEDDO plans to send the robots into Afghanistan soon for a forward assessment, he said. 13

Broadly defined, military robots date back to World War II and the Cold War in the form of the German Goliath tracked mines and the Soviet teletanks. Some believe the future of modern warfare will be fought by automated weapons systems. The U.S. Military is investing heavily in research and development towards testing and deploying increasingly automated systems. The most prominent system currently in use is the unmanned aerial vehicle (IAI Pioneer & RQ-1 Predator) which can be armed with Air-to-ground missiles and remotely operated from a command center in reconnaissance roles. DARPA has hosted competitions in 2004 & 2005 to involve private companies and universities to develop unmanned ground vehicles to navigate through rough terrain in the Mojave Desert for a final prize of $2 Million. The field of artillery has also seen some promising research with an experimental weapons system named “Dragon Fire II” which automates the loading and ballistics calculations required for accurate predicted fire, providing a 12 second response time to artillery support requests. However, weapons of warfare have one limitation in becoming fully autonomous: there remain intervention points which requires human input to ensure that targets are not within restricted fire areas as defined by Geneva Conventions for the laws of war. (NaturalNews) Controversy erupted when reports emerged that the Pentagon was close to completing a robot designed to forage for its own fuel by consuming "biomass in the environment," raising concerns that the Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot (EATR) might be intended to fuel itself from the bodies of the dead. The EATR was designed by Robotic Technology Inc. (RTI), in cooperation with Cyclone Power Technologies Inc. According to RTI, EATR is an autonomous robotic platform able to perform long-range,
long-endurance military missions without the need for manual or conventional refueling. The patent pending robotic system can find, ingest and extract energy from biomass in the environment, as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, diesel, propane and solar) when suitable." The vagueness of the term "biomass" led many commentators to ask whether the Pentagon was actually developing a cannibal killer robot. Responding to such allegations, RTI insisted that the robot will be programmed to consume only vegetable matter. "Despite the far-reaching reports that ["biomass"] includes "human bodies," the public can be assured that the engine Cyclone has developed to power the EATR runs on fuel no scarier than twigs, grass clippings and wood chips – small, plant-based items for which RTI's robotic technology is designed to forage. Desecration of the dead is a war crime under Article 15 of the Geneva Conventions." RTI president Bob Finkelstein was vague as to how the robots would be programmed to avoid human or animal flesh. "There are certain signatures from different kinds of materials," he said. Even if the robot does not feed on humans, its use may still constitute a war crime. "The robot steamers are envisaged as being equipped with powerful articulated arms in order to rip trees or bushes out of the earth and stuff them into their glowing maws," wrote Lewis Page in The Register. "By way of a treat, it seems that the machines will also be able to loot or forage more conventional fuel supplies from the petrol tanks of cars," he wrote. "Hapless drivers or householders will be in no position to object to such robotic plundering."

On a remote U.S. Forest Service road in Arizona a few years ago, the driver of a white minivan slowly rolls to a stop, sticks a rifle out the window, and starts firing at what look to be wild turkeys. State officers hiding in nearby bushes emerge, running toward the vehicle and shouting: “Game and Fish Department! Cease fire! Put down your weapon!” The driver speeds off, but is caught a short distance down the dirt road by another officer. The hunter is cited for discharging a weapon from a vehicle—a U.S. $500 fine. Unbeknownst to the driver, the turkey is actually a robotic decoy designed to catch such outdoor outlaws. Other robots include swimming moose, white-tailed deer and black bear. Conservationists estimate that, for every animal killed legally in a hunting season, one animal is lost to poaching. But year-round sting operations—like the one conducted near Young, Arizona, and in nearly every other U.S. state—are helping to level the playing field by saving wildlife from being illegally killed or captured for the pet trade. “I consider it like a bait car that police departments use to apprehend people who are stealing vehicles,” explains Arizona Game and Fish Department officer Ken Dinquel. For nearly 20 years, the Oregon State Police Department’s Fish and Wildlife Division has run a decoy operation targeting violators who hunt off-season from their cars and roadways or at night with the aid of a spotlight. Under state law, firing at a wildlife enforcement decoy is considered the same as firing at a live animal. All the same penalties apply.
“The people that shoot at decoys are wildlife thieves,” said Lt. Steve Lane. “They’re not hunters.” Robot Animals These animals look and act just like the real things. Molded-fiberglass animals are wrapped in genuine hides obtained by government officers through donations or illegal kills.
tors about 80 percent of the time. But not everyone who is caught knows they’ve done something wrong. “Oftentimes there’s just some disconnect with people on the wildlife laws,” Dinquel said. “They know that buying drugs on the streets of Phoenix is illegal, but they don’t view shooting a deer as that big of a deal.”
Inside the bodies are radio-controlled motors—the same type found in toy cars or planes—allowing wildlife officers to remotely move a decoy’s head, ears, and tail. Special reflective eyes glow at night when light is shined on them. The robots don’t come cheap: Prices range from $500 for turkey to $5,500 for a grizzly bear. But Bob Koons, executive director of the Humane Society of the United States’s Wildlife Land Trust, feels the price is well worth it. That’s because decoys put law enforcement officers and poachers in the same spot at the same time, leading to more convictions. Koons, whose trust donates the high-tech decoys to law enforcement agencies nationwide, said the program has “been extremely successful.” Illegal Immigrants In Arizona, wildlife officers are stepping up efforts against the rising number of illegal immigrants hunting at night for meat to feed their families, and, in some cases, entire neighborhoods. Dinquel, a 20-year veteran with the gameand-fish department, said poaching cases— which include illegal collection of protected species of reptiles for the pet trade—are a huge problem statewide. The department runs about 12 decoy operations annually, he said, nabbing viola25

This is Octavia. A disturbingly lifelike robot, she’s stationed in the Navy’s brand-new Laboratory for Autono30
mous Systems Research (or, yes, LASR) to teach human sailors how to work with robots and to learn, in turn, how to work with human sailors. Oh, and she fights fires — like the one a Navy scientist lights in a cavernous hangar bay. While the fire starts burning inside a series of partitions, the scientist — playing the role of a fireman — silently gesticulates at Octavia. The robot’s sensors and algorithms are meant to process the incomplete, contradictory or incorrect information that we humans spew every day. Octavia quickly processes and wheels herself through the entrance way. Once she’s in front of the fire, she sprays her nozzle full of flameretardant fluid at the blaze. Octavia uses a bit too much, though: Her infrared cameras triangulate a position to the fire, but she lacks heat sensors, so she tends to overdo it. But that’s par for the course in this gleaming, 2-week-old, 50,000-square-foot complex on the campus of the Naval Research Laboratory. Robots and their sensors come here to work out. Hard. That is, they perform tests to increase their autonomy from their human overlords in a range of realistic and varied environments, from simulated jungles to simulated deserts. Those robots are going to be put to the test — in all sorts of ways. There’s a 15-foot climbing wall. Directly below that, there’s a sandbox three feet deep. Nearby, a big fan threatens to simulate a sandstorm — one that could gunk up the gears
and blind the optics of the tealpainted robot arm in the middle of the sandbox. That’s what gives the LASR scientists pride. Robots that need to sift through Mideastern sand to find buried homemade bombs are going to get put through conditions as harsh and unforgiving to droids as the places the U.S. military will need them to operate. It’s not just sand. On the opposite end of the hall is the Tropical High Bay. It’s a 60-foot greenhouse packed with dense jungle canopy, meant to simulate the wilds of Southeast Asia. And it’s impressively realistic, down to the mango and jackfruit plants, the spider mites and the oppressively moist, 80 degree temperatures. The sprinkler systems on the roof can pump in six inches of rainfall per hour, “about as extreme as you’re going to find on the planet,” Schultz says. All that atmospheric punishment can be hell on sensors, radio frequency systems, ground robots and small drones that have to fly through dense foliage. Better, the Navy thinks, to run them through the simulations here before sailors and Marines have to deal with malfunctioning ‘bots out in the field. The LASR isn’t just a workout space. It’s a development studio. Beside a nearby indoor pool, the Navy shows off a hunk of metal that looks like a football with four dorsal fins. It’s actually a prototype for an underwater drone modeled on a fish called the bird wrasse. Fish don’t need propel-
lers, the Navy scientists reason, so why should underwater drones? Perhaps the most impressive bioinspired robot on display at the LASR is a thin, handheld plane with flashing red “eyes.” It’s a robotic bat. That is, it’s a machine that uses sonar, not GPS, to guide itself, “the same way a bat would use to find its prey,” says Navy scientist Dan Edwards. The idea is to develop an autonomous drone for urban environments too dense for GPS. But Octavia, and her brother Lucas, might be the most advanced robots designed for human interaction. Both robots have sensors that let them hear human voices, understand speech, view infrared patterns and algorithmically compute how to handle discordant or contradictory information. Two different scientists, for instance, tell Lucas slightly different information about a hypothetical shipboard fire. His creepy, pale, babylike face tilts sideways in momentary confusion before correctly deducing where the fire actually is, as announced through his booming, human-like voice. Octavia and Lucas may never get on ships themselves. Their lower halves are modified Segways, so there’s no way they can climb the steep ladders up and down a ship’s decks to douse shipboard flames. But the tests Octavia and Lucas go through here at this new lab will inform the functions of next-gen firefighter-bots, which should be able to get around a ship just fine. Not bad for a day’s workout. 31

Critics are claiming that two of the robots in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are black stereotypes. One writer lays it out: “[they] are voiced in a way that clearly designates them to be the ‘black’ robots. Also, Skids has a gold front tooth W(no, I’m serious) and both cannot read.” Manohla Dargis says they are “conspicuously cartoonish, so-called black voices that indicate that minstrelsy remains as much in fashion in Hollywood as when, well, Jar Jar Binks was set loose by George Lucas.” (Thanks for the quotes NYmag!) Transformers is not a very progressive movie. I noted this after watching the first one, which, yes, had a robot that is obviously black — his radio was tuned to hiphop. That would be fine, except, of course, which robot was the first to die? It’s not even racially offensive, just horribly cliche at this point. But it doesn’t stop at race. The first Transformers is, essentially, made for the Shia LaBeoufs, nerdy white guys who can’t get girls. Pretty girls in the movie who reject our hero are killed immediately. Any girl with intelligence is also, and foremost, smoking hot. Is any of this offensive? Eh. Stereotypes are the means through which people understand that which they cannot understand. We often write stereotypical races into technology (and, by the way, animals, as we will see in G-Force and just about every other cartoon the planet), especially when we can’t see human faces (think of ways of writing: if you’ve ever been on a black social networking site, it isn’t rare to see “dat” instead of “that,” etc.) In order to anthropomorphize robots, it makes sense the director, Michael Bay, would give them stereotypical voices. What gets him and studios into trouble is the other stuff they attach to it. In the first Transformers, they just killed him off. In this one, they’ve given them gold teeth and illiteracy. That starts to push it!
because it’s a stupid movie that will do anything for a cheap thrill, laugh or sexual rise. Yes, I will see the next one. And yes, since it will make loads of money, All in all, there will be I don’t another. really care, Transformers is hardly the most offensive movie in Hollywood. I have yet to see if Transformers 2 is. What puzzles me is why critics are up in arms now, having blessed the first ones with good reviews and missing the clear racial and gender stereotypes there.
Like 24, it has an anti-Democrat, antiObama bias, at least in one scene. The big bad Decepticons are going to attack earth, and President Obama has the army send away the friendly Autobots! He wants to use “diplomacy” and “negotiate” with the evildoers and give them Shia LaBeouf! Wimpy liberals always cave in the face of war! Really Kruger, Orci and Kurtzman (the writers)? That wouldn’t be so bad except Transformers doubles down on what it keeps muted in the first: every woman in the movie except a dean and Sam’s mom is hot. And they exist only to be hot or castrating. Transformers is filmed on Penn’s (University of Pennsylvania, UPenn to those of you who aren’t from Philly) campus, and I can tell you, from someone who goes here, not all the girls here are hot. What’s more, the women are uniformly stupid. Why are the girls in the front row of Rainn Wilson’s astronomy class giggling sycophant’s? Yes, not all Ivy Leaguers are smart, but geez. Why are there two “black” characters with overbites? The robot, and the butcher in John Tuturro’s store. I mean, really, overbites? That’s where we are with a black man in the White House?

At its best, all fashion should be an optical illusion that flatters the figure, emphasising one’s best points and cunningly disguising those that we’d rather didn’t exist at all. But recently designers have taken that philosophy to the ultimate extreme, creating dresses that literally redraw the silhouette. After all, every woman hankers after the ideal hourglass figure, with full hips, voluptuous cleavage and nipped-in waist, but only an estimated eight per cent of us are lucky enough to have naturally perfect 3626-36 proportions. But now, thanks to the latest in optical illusion dressing, those who aren’t naturally blessed with such a shape, whether they be too fat or too thin, can fake it. The latest fan of the clever design is Kate Winslet. At the premiere of Mildred Pierce in Venice last week, she wore a dress from Stella McCartney’s Winter 2011 collection that featured cunning black panels that whittled inches off her waist. And she’s not the only one. Earlier this year, Liv Tyler took to the red carpet in a similar Stella McCartney dress that was electric blue with black panels, while Victoria Beckham, Carol Vorderman and Kim Kardashian have all been snapped in the same £2,500 design that uses black lines on a white dress to give the impression of an hourglass. The dress, designed by the late Alexander McQueen, manages to both
42
flatter the natural curves of Carol Vorderman and create them on Victoria Beckham’s skinny frame. So where has this trend come from? It seems to stem from the Spring/ Summer collections of 2009, when Alexander McQueen and Herve Leger both sent models down the catwalk sporting designs that used graphic motifs to create a waspish waist. Celebrity stylist Angie Smith frequently dresses the likes of Dannii Minogue and Kelly Brook for highprofile appearances. She explains: ‘In the past, women have used accessories to create the illusion of an hourglass figure, using belts to define the waistline, and shoulder pads to balance proportions. But now the “illusion” dress does away with all that – the whole point is that you have a single piece that does all the work for you.’ So how do they work? Peter Thompson, an expert in visual perception from the University of York, says they use a very simple visual trick. He says: ‘The dark panels at the sides mean that if you’re standing against a dark, or busy background, the main contour of the body appears to be somewhere that it’s actually not.’ The Stella McCartney dress that Kate Winslet is wearing is actually even cleverer. ‘The white and the grey create a shading effect because as humans, we make an assumption that light comes from above and therefore
interpret light and dark in terms of shadow. In this case, the grey is seen as a shadow that’s being cast by her breasts, making them look higher than they actually are.’ He says he’s surprised that it’s taken designers this long to cotton on to these tricks. ‘You could make any woman look better just by exploiting what we know about how our vision works. These are relatively simple techniques but they’re incredibly effective.’ Fortunately, you don’t have to spend thousands to get the look. If you’ve got a friendly local seamstress, you could always ask her to add black panels to a simple shift dress, or head to the High Street where the trend has swiftly been adopted, with everything from bodycon bandage dresses to maxi dresses being given the illusion treatment. But, if you are planning to emulate Kate and co, Angie Smith has some advice. ‘Less is most definitely more,’ she says. ‘Keep your figure looking streamlined by doing away with ankle straps, belts, chokers and dark nail varnish — basically anything that will chop up your figure. You don’t want to distract the eye away from the dress. ‘To be honest, I’d accessorise with a really simple pair of closed-toe heels in a nude shade and let the dress work its magic.’ 43

If you have an hourglass shape with extra fat clinging to your stomach area, strengthening your abdominal muscles will help, but it cannot be the only way you attack the fat.

Consuming fewer calories than you expend is the only way to get rid of the excess fat. There is no way around this simple fact. Regardless of your shape, the only way to lose fat is by combining a healthy diet with exercise. Healthy Diet
Step 1
Reduce the number of calories you are eating by at least 500 to 1,000 calories per day in order to lose one to two pounds per week. Track every calorie you consume in a food diary, and use it to help you evaluate your eating habits to see where you can cut calories.
Step 2
Decrease your portion sizes. Every food has a different portion size. Measuring your food and sticking to one helping of the recommended portion can help you keep your calories in check.
48
Exercise Step 1
Perform 2 1/2 to five hours of cardiovascular exercise every week. This can be broken down into segments as small as 10 minutes as long as your weekly total approaches your goal. Consider any activity that gets your heart rate up and makes you sweat. Dancing, walking, and even yard work are all good cardiovascular options.
Step 3
Step 2
Step 4
Step 3
Step 5
Step 4
Avoid empty calories such as those in sugary drinks and processed foods. Fill up on healthier calories. As recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, imagine the diagram of a plate when planning your meals. Fill at least half of your plate with fruits and vegetables; only one-fourth is allotted to grains and one-fourth to protein.
Choose lower fat options, when possible. Consume lean proteins like chicken and fish. Buy lower fat versions of your favorite dairy products, such as 1 percent milk or reduced fat cheese.
Opt for healthy fats. You need some fat for your body to function properly. Get that fat from natural sources such as nuts, avocados, and olives.
Include muscle-strengthening exercises for all of the major muscles in your body at least two times per week. Building more muscle mass is a great way to increase your metabolism and burn more fat. Do weightlifting, resistance band workouts or yoga to build more muscle.
Focus on your abs three to five times per week with abdominal exercises. You can work your abs every day if you want. Simple crunches, a stability ball workout, or a Pilates session are all effective ways to work the muscles of your abdomen.
Look for ways to sneak more activity into your daily schedule. Wash your car instead of driving through the gas station’s machine. Walk around while talking on the phone. Even perform abdominal contractions while you are driving to work. Every calorie you expend helps.
