Corrado Rovaris Music Director Corrado Rovaris is the Music Director of Opera Philadelphia and Music Director of the Artosphere Festival Orchestra, founded in 2011 by Walton Arts Center. He also serves as Principal Conductor of the Italian chamber orchestra I Virtuosi Italiani, based in Verona. During the 2015-16 season, Rovaris conducted the east coast premiere of Jennifer Higdon/Gene Scheer’s acclaimed opera Cold Mountain based on Charles Frazier’s novel of the same name, in a new production cocommissioned by Opera Philadelphia. With the company, Rovaris will also conduct Verdi’s La traviata and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. He makes his debut with the Opéra Nationale de Lorraine à Nancy in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and returns to the Bergamo Gaetano Donizetti Music Festival with performances of Anna Bolena. In addition, he leads the Orchestra i Pomeriggi Musicale in concerts in Italy. Highlights from his 2014-15 season include the world premiere of Daniel Schnyder’s Charlie Parker’s Yardbird and company premieres of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Verdi’s Don Carlo at Opera Philadelphia; Verdi’s La traviata at Opéra de Lausanne; and symphonic concerts in Torino (Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionalle della RAI), Milan and Oviedo. Last season, Rovaris also made his debut with the Canadian Opera Company conducting Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux. Born in Bergamo, Italy, Maestro Rovaris graduated from the Giuseppe Verdi

Conservatory of Milan with degrees in composition, organ and harpsichord. From 1992-1996, he was the assistant chorus master of the Teatro alla Scala and made his debut on the podium with Il filosofo di campagna by Galuppi in a production by Associazione Lirica e Concertistica Italiana. He was subsequently invited to conduct at the Teatro Comunale in Florence and at the Rossini Opera Festival, and soon began appearing as a regular guest in many of the major Italian houses such as La Scala, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro La Fenice, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Internationally, he has led productions for the Opéra de Lyon, Théâtre Municipal de Lausanne, Oper Köln, Oper Frankfurt and Japan Opera Foundation in Tokyo, among others. Making his U.S. debut in 1999 with the Opera Company of Philadelphia in Le nozze di Figaro, Rovaris quickly became a company regular, eventually leading to his appointment as their music director in 2005. In October 2008, he conducted the Tucker Gala with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, featuring among other guest soloists Susan Graham and Bryn Terfel. He has also led a number of productions at the Santa Fe Opera, the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and Glimmerglass Opera. He has established a close connection with the Curtis Institute of Music and has led several joint Curtis-Opera Philadelphia productions since 2009.

Dover Quartet Featured Quartet

Joel Link (violin), Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt (viola), Bryan Lee (violin) and Camden Shaw (cello). The Dover Quartet catapulted to international stardom following a stunning sweep of the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, becoming one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world. The New Yorker recently dubbed them “the young American string quartet of the moment,” while The Strad raved that the quartet is “already pulling away from their peers with their exceptional interpretive maturity, tonal refinement and taut ensemble.” In 2013, the quartet became the first ever Quartet-in-Residence for the venerated Curtis Institute of Music. During 2014-15, the Dover Quartet performed over 100 concerts throughout the U.S., Canada, South America and Europe. Highlights included concerts for the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Schneider Concerts in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London. They also performed together with pianists Andre Watts, Anne-Marie McDermott and Jon Kimura Parker, violists Roberto Díaz and Cynthia Phelps, and the Pacifica Quartet. The Dover Quartet won not only the Grand Prize but all three Special Prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition as well. They have won top prizes at the Fischoff Competition and the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, and taken part in festivals such as Chamber Music Northwest,

Artosphere, La Jolla SummerFest, Bravo! Vail and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Additionally, members of the quartet have appeared as soloists with some of the world’s finest orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Tokyo Philharmonic. The Dover Quartet draws from the musical lineage of the Cleveland, Vermeer and Guarneri Quartets, having studied at the Curtis Institute and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where they were in residence from 2011-13. They have been mentored extensively by Shmuel Ashkenasi, James Dunham, Norman Fischer, Kenneth Goldsmith, Joseph Silverstein, Arnold Steinhardt, Michael Tree and Peter Wiley, and are dedicated to sharing their music with underserved communities; the quartet is an active member of Music for Food, an initiative to help musicians fight hunger in their home communities.
