Artosphere Festival Orchestra Russian Masterworks
Corrado Rovaris Music Director Corrado Rovaris is the Music Director of Opera Philadelphia and Music Director of the Artosphere Festival Orchestra, founded in 2011 by Walton Arts Center. He also serves as Principal Conductor of the Italian chamber orchestra I Virtuosi Italiani, based in Verona. In the upcoming 2015-16 season, Mr. Rovaris will conduct the east coast premiere of the Jennifer Higdon/ Gene Scheer opera Cold Mountain based on Charles Frazier’s novel of the same name, in a new production cocommissioned by Opera Philadelphia. With the company, Mr. Rovaris will also conduct Verdi’s La traviata and Donizetti’s ‘elisir d’amore. He makes his debut with the Opéra Nationale de Lorraine à Nancy in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and returns to the Bergamo Gaetano Donizetti Music Festival with performances of Anna Bolena. In addition, he leads the Orchestra i Pomeriggi Musicale in concerts in Italy. Highlights from the 2014-15 season include the world premiere of Daniel Schnyder’s Charlie Parker’s Yardbird and company premieres of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Verdi’s Don Carlo at Opera Philadelphia, Verdi’s La traviata at Opéra de Lausanne, and symphonic concerts in Torino (Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionalle della RAI), Milan and Oviedo. Last season, Mr. Rovaris made his debut with the Canadian Opera Company conducting Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux. Born in Bergamo, Italy, Maestro Rovaris graduated from the Giuseppe Verdi
Conservatory of Milan with degrees in composition, organ and harpsichord. From 1992 to 1996 he was the assistant chorus master of the Teatro alla Scala and made his debut on the podium with Il filosofo di campagna by Galuppi in a production by Associazione Lirica e Concertistica Italiana. He was subsequently invited to conduct at the Teatro Comunale in Florence and at the Rossini Opera Festival and soon began appearing as a regular guest in many of the major Italian houses such as La Scala, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro La Fenice, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Internationally, he has led productions for the Opéra de Lyon, Théâtre Municipal de Lausanne, Oper Köln, Oper Frankfurt and Japan Opera Foundation in Tokyo, among others. Making his U.S. debut in 1999 with the Opera Company of Philadelphia in Le nozze di Figaro, Mr. Rovaris quickly became a company regular, eventually leading to his appointment as their music director in 2005. In October 2008, he conducted the Tucker Gala with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, featuring among other guest soloists Susan Graham and Bryn Terfel. He has also led a number of productions at the Santa Fe Opera, the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and Glimmerglass Opera. He has established a close connection with the Curtis Institute of Music, and since 2009 has led several joint Curtis-Opera Philadelphia productions.
Benedetto Lupo Featured Soloist, Piano Benedetto Lupo has been described by critics as an “exceptionally fine pianist ... who has a remarkably fine touch and beautiful tone control” (The Oregonian). Praised for his “keen musical intelligence and probing intellect” (Miami Herald), and for combining “meticulous technique with romantic sensitivity” (Birmingham News), he has gained worldwide recognition. His 2015-16 season includes performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria and a tour with the Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese featuring works by Brahms, Mozart and Poulenc with Beatrice Rana at the Teatro dal Verme in Milan. After winning the bronze medal in the 1989 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Benedetto made acclaimed debuts with several major American orchestras, as well as chamber appearances with the Tokyo String Quartet. His New York City recital debut at Alice Tully Hall followed in 1992, the same year he won the Terence Judd International Award, which in turn led to his debut at London’s Wigmore Hall. Benedetto Lupo has performed with many prestigious orchestras including the Los Angeles, Malaysian and Louisiana Philharmonic orchestras, I Musici de Montréal, the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi and with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Toronto, Huntsville, Calgary,
Colorado, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Montréal, Oregon, San Antonio, Seattle, St. Louis, Utah, Vancouver and Virginia. Festival appearances include Tanglewood Festival with the Baltimore Symphony, Domain Forget International Festival with Les Violons du Roy and Le Festival de Lanaudiére. In Europe, he has appeared in his native Italy with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Santa Cecilia Symphony, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese, the National RAI Orchestra (Torino) and the Brescia and Bergamo festivals. He has also celebrated Liszt’s 200th birthday by performing the composer’s Concerto No. 1 and Totentanz with the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig; performed Nino Rota’s Concerto Soirée with the Spanish National Orchestra (Madrid) to mark the composer’s 100th birthday; and performed with the London Philharmonic, Slovak Philharmonic, and the orchestras of Limburg (Netherlands), Odense (Denmark) and with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Navarra (Spain), Hallé, Bergen (Norway), Rotterdam and Liege. Lupo’s recordings include an acclaimed version of Nino Rota’s Concerto Soirée with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana on the Nuova Era label, and a new recording of the same work

on Harmonia Mundi for which he received the prestigious Diapason d’Or award. With Peter Maag and the RSI Symphony Orchestra he has recorded Schumann’s complete works for piano and orchestra, including the first album recording of the piano version of Konzertstück, Op. 86, for the Arts label. Since 2013, Lupo has been serving as the Piano Master Course professor at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He gives master classes around the world and has served on the jury of both the Cleveland International Competition and the Gina Bachauer Competition in Salt Lake City, from which he previously won second and third prize, respectively. Most recently, he also served on the jury at the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. He is featured on the Emmy® Award-winning documentary Here to Make Music: The Eighth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the seven-part series Encore! The Final Round of Performances of the Eighth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, both for PBS.
