AMBITIOUS SOCIAL HOUSING PROJECT TO WELCOME FIRST FAMILIES
Four families are on track to be settled into new-build homes before Christmas thanks to swift work by South Kesteven District Council to sign over the first of 36 affordable properties in a £6.5m housing project.
The handover is for the first phase at Swinstead Road in Corby Glen, being delivered by David Wilson Homes, making four three-bedroom properties immediately available to those on SKDC’s Choice Based Lettings system.
The move supports the Council’s Housing priorities as laid out in the Corporate Plan 202427, to ensure that all residents can access housing which is safe, good quality, sustainable and suitable for their needs and future generations.
Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Virginia Moran, said the homes will be set at affordable rent levels and advertised on Choice Based Lettings portal.
She said: “The sheer number of houses lost under the Right to Buy process means the Council needs a hybrid approach to replace them by acquiring properties on larger developments across the District, as well as building our own.
“The Housing acquisitions budget was increased this year to include an additional £1m to buy the affordable properties direct from developers, and we make sure these are good value for money for the Council.
The project is SKDC’s biggest investment in social housing in a generation and will help mitigate the loss of more than 40 homes a year through the Right to Buy Scheme.
Cllr Moran added: “We are committed to working with partners to provide energy efficient properties which is achieved by working with developers to ensure sustainable, affordable, and high-quality housing is built.”
The 36 new homes are being built in seven phases up to June 2028.
They comprise eight three-bedroom houses, 19 two-bedroom houses, four one-bedroom
maisonettes, five four-bedroom houses.
The Council continues to be in discussions with house builders about further sites in the District.
SKDC’s own new-builds include: Swinegate, Grantham; Larch Close, Grantham and Wellington Way, Market Deeping; with potential sites at Gorse Rise, Grantham; Kesteven Road, Stamford; Bourne End Road, Colsterworth.

NEW GEOTHERMAL ‘GLASSHOUSE’ RESEARCH FACILITY TO GROW FOOD INDUSTRY INNOVATION AND PAVE WAY TO NET ZERO
Work has started on creating a new research and development facility at the University of Lincoln’s Riseholme Park Campus, enabling new industry collaboration and research opportunities for the UK’s food and farming sector.
The glasshouse will facilitate regional industry specialisms, support innovation in food and farming, deliver collaborative, impactful and high value research with industry, and further establish the University’s Riseholme Park Campus and Lincoln Institute for Agri-Food Technology (LIAT) as specialist centres.
The Glasshouse Research & Development (R&D) Facility will use geothermal ground source heating technology to provide heating from renewable energy. The building will therefore operate with a considerably lower carbon footprint than traditional facilities of its kind and will demonstrate plausible pathways towards a Net Zero transition for this segment of the agriculture and horticulture industries.
When completed, the glasshouse will offer access to specialist research infrastructure and innovation support services. This will allow SMEs and other businesses in the UK’s food sector to adapt or improve their products or services.
The glasshouse will have capacity for multiple R&D projects to take place simultaneously in independently controlled compartments. Eligible businesses will also have access to academic experts from the University of Lincoln, as well as many research and knowledge transfer opportunities. This ongoing support will enable adoption of new technology, new processes, acquisition of skills and the development of new products.
Prof. Neal Juster, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, said:
“We are very excited at the prospect of our new Glasshouse Facility being constructed at the University’s Riseholme Park Campus, and it will be working with Net Zero technologies that are in line with our ongoing commitment to sustainability and a carbon free future.

tech in Lincoln, to its fresh produce sector in southern Lincolnshire.
“We are facilitating growth with an industryled investment agenda. Our enabling strategy, working in conjunction with industry can deliver success by attracting and supporting investors.
“By working together, locally and with the government, we can deliver much more investment, innovation, job creation and food security.
“It is incredibly important that we invest in applied research and development opportunities such as this and encourage the growth of our University as a commercial entity.”
Ruth Carver, Chief Executive of the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, said:
“As the UK’s Food Valley, the agri-food sector in Greater Lincolnshire is nationally significant and growing rapidly.
“The Local Enterprise Partnership is supporting the Glasshouse research facility to ensure that state-of-the-art facilities are available to our businesses to help them grow and innovate and to allow our people to learn new skills.”
Prof. Simon Pearson, Founding Director of the Lincoln Institute for Agri-Food Technology at the University of Lincoln, said:
“The Glasshouse R&D Facility will present a great amount of new opportunities for not

only those studying at LIAT, but for eligible businesses that will benefit from the research carried out at the facility.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the commitment and investment of the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and we are very grateful for their ongoing support.
“Once the new facility is operational, we will develop a raft of new Net Zero facilities for glasshouse production. Our aim is to unlock substantive investment on glasshouse crop production across the GLLEP. These investments need viable Net Zero solutions for growers to reduce energy cost and carbon emissions. Investment in glasshouse production helps grow local economies, skills and food security”
The Glasshouse R&D Facility will form part of Greater Lincolnshire LEP’s proposed Agricultural Growth Zone (Ag Zone), designed to support Greater Lincolnshire agriculture and the delivery of the UK Food Valley.
The research and development infrastructure will also be used for the new AgriTech Incubator established by the University of Lincoln in partnership with Barclays Eagle Labs.
The total cost of the project will be £2.2 million with the majority of the capital being provided by a local growth fund from the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership. Construction of the facility is expected to be completed by Summer 2025.

TURNING RESOLUTIONS INTO REALITY IN 2025
As we settle into the first week of January, millions of people around the world have already embraced the age-old tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions. The start of a new year offers a sense of renewal—a chance to leave behind old habits and embrace positive changes. But why do we make these resolutions, and how can we ensure they become lasting commitments rather than fleeting promises?
New Year’s resolutions tap into our innate desire for self-improvement. They represent hope and optimism, a belief that we have the power to shape our future. Resolutions are a personal commitment to growth, whether it’s improving health, building relationships, or advancing professionally.
SETTING MEANINGFUL GOALS
The key to successful resolutions lies in choosing goals that genuinely resonate with you. It’s tempting to pick popular resolutions like losing weight, saving money, or learning a new skill, but it’s essential to ask yourself why you want to achieve them. For example, instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” you might reframe it as, “I want to feel more energetic and improve my overall health.” A meaningful purpose behind your goal provides the motivation needed to stick with it.
MAKE RESOLUTIONS ACHIEVABLE
One of the most common reasons resolutions fail is because they’re too ambitious or vague. Breaking your goals into smaller, manageable steps makes them more attainable. For instance, if your resolution is to read more, start with a goal of one book a month rather than a book a week. Similarly, if you aim to eat healthier, begin by incorporating one extra serving of
vegetables into your meals each day. Small wins build confidence and momentum.
EMBRACE FLEXIBILITY
Life is unpredictable, and rigid resolutions can quickly become overwhelming. Allow yourself some grace and flexibility. If your resolution was to exercise five days a week and you only manage three, celebrate the effort rather than focusing on the shortfall. The journey toward self-improvement is not about perfection—it’s about progress.
POPULAR RESOLUTIONS FOR 2025
While resolutions are deeply personal, some goals resonate universally. Here are a few common resolutions to consider for inspiration:
Improve Physical Health: Start a new fitness routine, take up yoga, or explore local walking trails.
Prioritise Mental Well-Being: Dedicate time to mindfulness, journaling, or reducing screen time.
Strengthen Relationships: Make an effort to reconnect with friends and family or meet new people.
Learn Something New: Pick up a hobby, enrol in a course, or develop a professional skill.
Give Back: Volunteer for a cause you care about or find small ways to contribute to your community.
TIPS FOR STAYING ON TRACK
Write It Down: Document your resolutions and revisit them regularly to remind yourself of your goals.
Track Progress: Use a journal or app to monitor your achievements and identify areas for improvement.
Seek Support: Share your resolutions with a trusted friend or join a group with similar goals for accountability.
Celebrate Milestones: Reward yourself for hitting key milestones to keep motivation high.
A YEAR OF GROWTH
The beauty of New Year’s resolutions lies in their potential to transform not just a year but an entire perspective. By setting meaningful, achievable goals and approaching them with patience and perseverance, you can make 2025 a year of growth, success, and fulfilment.
Here’s to a fresh start and the endless possibilities it brings!
NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
EMBRACING HEALTH AND FITNESS IN 2025
The arrival of January marks a fresh start—a chance to reset, refocus, and recharge. It’s the perfect time to turn those health and fitness goals into actionable plans, paving the way for a healthier and more fulfilling year ahead. Whether you’re aiming to improve your physical fitness, boost your mental well-being, or adopt a more balanced lifestyle, small, consistent changes can lead to big results.
When it comes to health and fitness, ambition is admirable, but sustainability is key. Instead of overwhelming yourself with drastic resolutions, set realistic and measurable goals. Perhaps you’d like to walk 10,000 steps daily, explore a new Lincolnshire walking route each weekend, or dedicate 15 minutes each day to mindfulness. These achievable targets will keep you motivated and reduce the risk of burnout.
DISCOVER THE JOY OF WALKING IN LINCOLNSHIRE
Walking is one of the simplest and most accessible ways to improve your fitness, and Lincolnshire offers an array of picturesque routes to keep you inspired. From the rolling hills of the Wolds to the scenic coastal trails and peaceful waterways, there’s no shortage of options to explore. Start with shorter routes, like the trails around Hubbards Hills in Louth or the pathways along the Lincolnshire Coast, and gradually build up your stamina.
For a more historical touch, why not incorporate a stroll through the charming streets of Lincoln itself? Climbing Steep Hill is not only a great workout but also a chance to soak in the city’s rich heritage and breathtaking cathedral views.
For something more adventurous, consider exploring the Viking Way, a long-distance footpath that spans 147 miles from the Humber Bridge to Rutland Water. Even if you don’t complete the whole trail, segments of it offer incredible views and a sense of accomplishment.
BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM
Embarking on a health and fitness journey is easier with support. Why not join a local walking group to explore the Lincolnshire countryside with like-minded individuals? Sharing the experience with others can make it more enjoyable and keep you motivated.
Alternatively, invite friends or family to join you on a regular walking schedule. It’s a great way to catch up, stay active, and hold each other accountable.
PRIORITISE MENTAL HEALTH
Fitness isn’t just about physical activity; mental health plays an equally important role. Walking in nature has been proven to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance creativity. Lincolnshire’s abundance of green spaces and quiet trails makes it the perfect setting for some reflective time in the fresh air. Consider unplugging from technology on your walks and taking in the natural beauty around you.
If walking alone isn’t for you, try incorporating mindfulness exercises like deep breathing or guided meditation during your stroll. These small practices can make a big difference in your overall mental well-being.
FUEL YOUR BODY RIGHT
Nutrition is the cornerstone of any health and fitness journey. Start by making small, manageable changes, such as swapping sugary snacks for fresh fruit or adding an extra serving of locally sourced vegetables to your meals. Lincolnshire is known for its rich agricultural heritage, so take advantage of fresh produce from local farmers’ markets to fuel your body with nutrientpacked foods.
Why not experiment with new recipes using seasonal ingredients? Root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, and potatoes are plentiful in the winter months and can form the basis of hearty, nutritious meals to keep you energised.
CELEBRATE PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION
Finally, remember to celebrate your wins, no matter how small they may seem. Whether it’s completing a longer walk than planned, trying a new local trail, or simply choosing to prioritise your health, these victories matter. Progress is not linear, and setbacks are part of the process. Be kind to yourself and keep moving forward.
This January, commit to making choices that prioritise your health and happiness. By exploring the beauty of Lincolnshire on foot and embracing a balanced approach to fitness and well-being, you’ll set the tone for a year filled with vitality and positivity.
Here’s to a healthier, happier you in 2025!

A FRESH START FOR YOUR HOME
NEW YEAR, NEW POSSIBILITIES
As the festive season fades and the Christmas decorations are packed away, January offers the perfect opportunity to breathe new life into your home. With a clean slate, it’s an ideal time to consider decorating, renovating, or even taking the plunge and moving house. Whether you’re making small changes or planning a complete overhaul, this fresh start can set the tone for a more organised, inspiring, and comfortable living space in the year ahead.
REORGANISE AND REDEFINE YOUR SPACE
With the tinsel gone and the tree dismantled, you might notice how much clearer your home feels. Take advantage of this by decluttering further and reorganising your space. Use the ‘one-year rule’ for items you haven’t used recently and
consider donating them to charity or recycling responsibly. Once clutter-free, rearranging furniture can bring a fresh perspective without costing a penny. Moving a sofa to a different angle or swapping items between rooms can completely transform the feel of your home.
If you’re craving something more substantial, redecorating can be a rewarding project. A new coat of paint or fresh wallpaper can invigorate any room. Consider colours that inspire positivity and calmness, such as soft greens, warm neutrals, or cool blues, which are predicted to be popular choices in 2025.
UPGRADING YOUR INTERIORS
The new year is also a great time to tackle home improvements you’ve been putting off. Replacing worn-out carpets, updating tired curtains, or investing in new furniture can make a world of difference. If your budget allows, upgrading fixtures like light fittings, door handles, or taps can add a touch of modernity without requiring a full renovation.
TRANSFORMING YOUR KITCHEN
A new kitchen is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to your home, offering both practical and aesthetic benefits. Whether you’re dreaming of sleek, modern units, a rustic farmhouse style, or something completely bespoke, a kitchen makeover can transform the heart of your home. Start by identifying your needs—do you require more storage, better appliances, or an improved layout?
Working with a local kitchen supplier can make the process smoother and more personalised. Local businesses often provide tailored advice, high-quality craftsmanship, and excellent customer service. Plus, by supporting local suppliers, you’re also investing in your community. Many offer a
range of options, from full installations to custom cabinetry, and can help you design a kitchen that reflects your style while maximising functionality.
Don’t forget to incorporate energy-efficient appliances into your design. Modern refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers can not only enhance the look of your kitchen but also help reduce your energy bills over time.
THE JOY OF RENOVATION
For those ready to take on a bigger challenge, January is an excellent time to start planning renovations. Whether it’s a kitchen makeover, creating an open-plan living area, or converting an unused loft or garage into a functional space, home improvements can increase both the comfort and value of your property.
Take time to research styles and trends that resonate with you, but focus on creating spaces that suit your lifestyle. Perhaps you dream of a home office with plenty of natural light, a luxurious bathroom retreat, or a cosy nook for reading and relaxation. Whatever your vision, careful planning and budgeting will help bring it to life.
CONSIDERING A MOVE
If your current home no longer fits your needs, the new year may inspire thoughts of moving. Whether you’re looking for more space, a new layout, or a change of scenery, January is a great time to start planning your next step.
Assess your priorities—do you need a larger property, or are you downsizing? Is your focus on proximity to amenities, a better commute, or simply a change of pace? Researching the housing market and connecting with local estate agents can help you make informed decisions. Even if a move isn’t immediate, beginning the process now gives you time to explore options and clarify your goals.
YOUR HOME, YOUR SANCTUARY
Ultimately, whether you choose to redecorate, renovate, or relocate, your home should be a reflection of your needs and personality. January is the perfect time to reimagine your space, creating a sanctuary that brings comfort and inspiration throughout the year. With the festivities behind us and a whole year of possibilities ahead, there’s no better time to embrace a fresh start for your home.

RSPB BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH 2025
TOGETHER, LET’S MAKE IT COUNT IN LINCOLNSHIRE
• RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is the largest garden wildlife survey in the world and provides a snapshot of how garden birds are faring in the UK.
• In 2024, over 600,000 people across the UK took part, counting more than 9.7 million birds.
• With even our familiar birds now facing so many challenges due to the nature and climate emergency, every count matters.
The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.
In 2024 over 600,000 people took part, counting more than 9.7 million birds, and over 8000 of those passionate counters were right here in Lincolnshire.
This year’s event takes place on 24, 25 and 26 January 2025. People in Lincolnshire are asked to spend an hour watching and counting the birds in their garden or local park, or from their balcony, then send their results to the RSPB.
The Birdwatch, which started in 1979, has become a much-loved annual citizen science event that gives the RSPB a valuable snapshot of how our garden birds are doing in the UK. Over that time, more than 195 million birds have been counted and over 12.1 million hours spent watching and counting garden birds.
Beccy Speight, the RSPB’s Chief Executive, said: “At its heart, Big Garden Birdwatch is an opportunity for people to spend an hour watching, enjoying, and connecting with the wildlife on their doorstep. From chirpy House Sparrows to acrobatic Blue Tits, the entertaining antics of our garden birds can brighten even the dullest day and bring a welcome dose of nature into our everyday lives. By taking part in the Birdwatch, you and hundreds of thousands of other nature lovers across the UK, play an important role in helping us understand how garden birds are doing. With the nature and climate emergency threatening even our most familiar birds, every count matters. It’s good for wildlife and evidence shows it’s good for our own wellbeing.”
Last year’s UK wide Big Garden Birdwatch results revealed that House Sparrow held on to the top spot for another year, with Blue Tit riding high at number two and Starling coming in at number three. Woodpigeon and Blackbird made up the remainder of the top five most recorded species.
In Lincolnshire the top five birds spotted in the 2024 Big Garden Birdwatch were: House sparrow, Starling, Woodpigeon, Blackbird and Blue tit.
Although 1.4 million House Sparrows were spotted across the January weekend last year, they have sadly suffered severe declines. Average numbers spotted in gardens, parks and community spaces have dropped 60% since the first Big Garden Birdwatch in 1979.
Over its four decades, Big Garden Birdwatch has highlighted the winners and losers in the garden bird world. The Blue Tit and Great Tit, muchloved garden species, have seen their average numbers rise by 24% and 61% respectively. While species such as the Starling, currently at number two in the Big Garden Birdwatch charts, has seen its numbers drop by more than 80% since 1979.
To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2025 in Lincolnshire, watch the birds on your balcony, in your garden or in your local green space for one hour at some point over the three days. Only count the birds
that land, not those flying over. Tell us the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see in the hour.
Registration for Big Garden Birdwatch 2025 opened on 11th December 2024.
To receive your FREE Big Garden Birdwatch guide, which includes a bird identification chart, top tips for your Birdwatch, RSPB shop voucher, plus advice on how to help you attract wildlife to your garden, text BIRD to 82727, or you can choose a free digital guide (which helps the RSPB spend more on nature by reducing costs) by visiting: www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch
The parallel event RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch takes place during the first half of spring term, 7 January – 14 February 2025. For more than 20 years, the Birdwatch has helped to connect children and their teachers with nature in their school grounds. Registration for Big Schools’ Birdwatch will go live midSeptember. GARDENING IN JANUARY
PREPARING FOR A FLOURISHING
YEAR
January may seem like a quiet time in the garden, but it’s an important month to lay the groundwork for the growing season ahead. While frost and chilly winds dominate, a little planning, preparation, and maintenance can ensure your garden thrives when spring arrives.
This is the perfect time to reflect on the successes and challenges of last year. Consider what worked well and what didn’t, and start sketching ideas for new flower beds, vegetable patches, or even a complete redesign of your outdoor space. Seed catalogues offer plenty of inspiration, helping you choose the plants that will bring colour and vibrancy to your garden in the months to come.
For those looking to create something truly special, local garden design companies can be invaluable. These experts specialise in turning ideas into reality, whether you envision a peaceful retreat, a wildlife-friendly haven, or an entertainment area for family and friends. Many companies offer tailored design services to reflect your vision, and they can also manage the practical work of transforming your space. From laying patios to planting borders or installing water features, their expertise can save you time and ensure a professional finish. January is the perfect time to book a consultation before their schedules fill up in spring.
While the garden rests, it’s worth focusing on maintenance. Your tools are essential companions, so take this time to sharpen and oil secateurs, spades, and shears, ensuring they’re ready for the busy
months ahead. Check fences, trellises, and sheds for damage caused by winter storms and make necessary repairs now to prevent further issues. If you have a greenhouse, give it a thorough clean to remove algae and grime, maximising light for overwintering plants and reducing the risk of dampness.
Soil health is crucial for a thriving garden, and January is an excellent time to enrich it. Spreading a layer of wellrotted manure, compost, or leaf mould over your beds will improve soil structure and provide essential nutrients for the growing season. To avoid compacting frosty soil, use planks of wood to distribute your weight evenly if you need to step into the beds.
Some plants benefit from attention during their dormant phase. Pruning roses, fruit trees, and hedges in January encourages healthy growth and flowering later in
the year. It’s also the ideal time to plant bare-root trees and shrubs, which are costeffective and establish well in cooler months. Newly planted specimens should be watered during dry spells to help them settle in.
Even in the depths of winter, there are ways to bring life to your garden. Hellebores, snowdrops, and early-flowering iris varieties add splashes of colour to frosty days, while evergreen shrubs and grasses provide year-round structure. Don’t forget to support wildlife by putting out fresh water and food for birds, who will bring movement and charm to your winter garden.
January is all about preparation and optimism. Whether you’re carefully planning, tidying, or collaborating with local professionals to create the garden of your dreams, every effort you make now will pay off in the vibrant blooms and bountiful harvests of the year ahead.
A NEW YEAR RESOLUTION
CREATE YOUR DREAM GARDEN
Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a lovely time with family and friends over the festive season. This New Year might be the perfect time to create a new garden or make some changes to enhance your current space. Here are a few garden trends for 2025 that might inspire you:
BOLD PERENNIALS
This year, bold colour choices in perennial plants are taking centre stage. Shades of deep purples, vibrant reds, and bright yellows are set to dominate British gardens. Plants like fiery Crocosmia, dark-leaved Heuchera, and cheerful Rudbeckia bring a splash of colour and texture to any garden, making them ideal for a fresh look.
CUTTING GARDENS
With a renewed focus on sustainability and budget-consciousness, cutting gardens are making a comeback in 2025. British cutting gardens are full of perennials and bulbs that provide an
array of beautiful blooms, perfect for indoor arrangements and bouquets.
SMART GARDEN TECHNOLOGY
Technology in the garden is here to stay, with 2025 seeing a surge in smart gardening tools. From automated watering systems to app-controlled lighting, these innovations help optimize garden care. Smart sensors, for instance, monitor soil moisture and weather conditions, ensuring your plants get just the right care, reducing waste, and encouraging healthy growth.
OUTDOOR LIVING
Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces continues to be a trend, with gardens becoming true extensions of the home. From comfortable seating areas to outdoor kitchens or even home offices surrounded by lush greenery,
the goal is to create a personalised outdoor space for relaxation and work.
Whether you’re planning big changes or small ones, we’re here to help. As a family-run business, we take pride in designing gardens that match each client’s budget and fit their space perfectly. SUPPORTING INDEPENDENCE
As we step into the new year, it’s the perfect time to focus on the wellbeing of our elderly loved ones. For many, maintaining independence and a good quality of life becomes more challenging with age, but the right mobility aids and care options can make all the difference.
MOBILITY AIDS: TOOLS FOR FREEDOM
Mobility aids have come a long way, offering solutions that cater to a variety of needs. From stylish walking sticks and rollators to high-tech scooters, these devices empower individuals to navigate their daily lives with confidence and independence.
For those experiencing reduced mobility, lightweight wheelchairs and rise-andrecline chairs can provide essential support. Local suppliers in Lincolnshire offer a range of products tailored to individual requirements. Many of these businesses also provide fitting services, ensuring that aids are not only comfortable but also maximise safety and usability.
Smart technology has also entered the realm of mobility aids. Devices like GPSenabled walking aids, fall detectors, and alert systems are now widely available, helping families stay connected and ensuring peace of mind for everyone. These advancements mean mobility aids are no longer just functional but also tools for enhancing overall quality of life.
ADAPTING THE HOME
For individuals preferring to remain in their own homes, adaptations can create a safe and comfortable environment. Simple additions, such as grab rails in the bathroom or stairlifts, can make a significant impact. More extensive changes, like walk-in showers or widened doorways, can also improve accessibility for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.
CARE HOMES: A COMMUNITY APPROACH
While many elderly individuals can thrive with mobility aids and home adaptations, there may come a time when additional care is needed. Lincolnshire is home to a wide range of care homes, each offering tailored support to meet diverse needs. Whether it’s short-term respite care or a permanent arrangement, these homes provide a sense of community and companionship.
Modern care homes emphasise dignity and independence, offering personalised care plans that respect individual preferences. Facilities often
include vibrant social activities, on-site physiotherapy, beautifully landscaped gardens, and even technology classes to keep residents connected. These elements contribute to a fulfilling lifestyle, ensuring residents maintain a sense of purpose and belonging.
SUPPORTING CARERS
Let’s not forget the incredible work of carers—both professional and family members—who provide unwavering support. They play a vital role in the well-being of the elderly, often juggling multiple responsibilities. Recognising their dedication and providing resources to ease their burden can make a world of difference.
A FUTURE OF COMPASSION
The new year brings fresh opportunities to address the evolving needs of our elderly population. Whether it’s through innovative mobility aids, home adaptations, or compassionate care homes, families can ensure their loved ones enjoy a safe, fulfilling, and independent lifestyle—today and in the years to come.

UNIVERSITY HELPING TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF NURSING IN LINCOLNSHIRE
The University of Lincoln is at the forefront of addressing Lincolnshire’s nursing workforce challenges, preparing future healthcare professionals with the skills, experience, and support needed to thrive in the region’s healthcare sector.
While the nursing vacancy rate in England has improved in recent years, 7.5% of positions -equivalent to 31,294 rolesremain unfilled, according to NHS England. Lincolnshire faces unique challenges in attracting and retaining staff, with factors such as its unique geography playing a role. With healthcare partners across the county recognising a need to ‘grow its own’ workforce to support the needs of the region, the University of Lincoln is stepping up with innovative pathways into nursing careers.
The University’s pre-registration MSc Nursing programme is one such initiative, offering individuals with undergraduate degrees the opportunity to qualify as registered nurses within two years. This blend of classroom learning and practical placements equips graduates to excel in demanding and rapidly evolving clinical settings.
Chris Best, a graduate of the MSc Nursing (Adult Health), transitioned to nursing after years in healthcare. He had previously worked as an Operating Department Practitioner and Theatre Lead for Gynaecology and Urology but was inspired to pivot his career following his redeployment to Intensive Care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The MSc helped me develop the skills to become an autonomous practitioner,” said Chris, now a Practice Nurse at Central Surgery Barton. “The lecturers were brilliant, sharing their expertise and giving me a clear perspective on primary care. I started training at 44, and I’d encourage anyone considering nursing later in life to follow their passion. You’re never too old, and that extra life experience can bring invaluable transferable skills.”
Students and alumni alike praise the University for its supportive environment, high-quality facilities, and dedicated staff.
Vikki Housam, currently studying MSc Nursing (Child), returned to education after a career in childcare. She was drawn to Lincoln by its welcoming campus: “At
Lincoln, the support has been brilliant,” Vikki said. “The campus, library, and academic staff provide everything you need, and they’re always there to help with any challenges you face.”
Abigail Heath, a graduate of the MSc Nursing (Mental Health), echoed these sentiments. Now working with the NHS in Louth’s Community Mental Health Team, she reflected on her time at the University: “At Lincoln, you’re part of a great community, and the support from staff was fantastic. They’re so helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable—they really help set you up for your time in practice.”
Students also highlighted the personal and professional rewards of pursuing a career in nursing, as well as the unique insights gained through their studies.
Vikki’s placements in Lincoln County Hospital’s paediatric A&E department have been transformative: “I’ve gained so much confidence in such a short time, whether it’s communicating with doctors or taking patients’ observations. It’s rewarding to see your progress and know you’ve made a difference, no matter how tough the day might be.”
For Abigail, nursing is a demanding but deeply fulfilling profession: “It’s tough, but it’s so important. Nurses often spend the most time with patients, building trust and making a real difference in their care. If you have the drive, you’ll do itand it’s definitely worth it.”
Chris also emphasised the value of following
your passion: “Nursing can be life-changing - not just for patients, but for you as well. It’s a profession that welcomes diverse skills and experiences, and Lincoln gives you the tools to succeed.”
Through the MSc programme, as well as its undergraduate nursing degrees and apprenticeships, the University of Lincoln is addressing local healthcare challenges head-on. By fostering homegrown talent and building strong ties to the community, the University is not only training skilled nurses but also helping to ensure they remain in Lincolnshire to serve the region.
Nerea Odongo is the Group Chief Nurse at Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group and has seen for herself the difference the MSc Nursing programme is making. She said: “This course is brilliant as it combines classroom teaching with hands on experience during placements.
“Personally I am passionate about nursing and believe it is the best job in the world. Being able to care for other people’s loved ones in a real privilege, but it can also be challenging.
“This course gives students a real opportunity to experience and understand what a career in nursing might involve. We know that people often stay in the areas where they train and study and so to be able to welcome students at the start of this course and then welcome them as colleagues a few years later is inspirational.”
Lesley Gratrix, Deputy Head of SchoolSchool of Health and Care Sciences at the University said: “Starting a healthcare career at the University of Lincoln is a truly rewarding experience, as echoed by our dedicated students and alumni. Our MSc Nursing programme - one of many exceptional opportunities we offer - is particularly for those with first degrees looking to refocus their careers. We are proud to provide a supportive and enriching environment that equips our students with the skills and confidence to excel in the diverse field of healthcare.”
