Opiate addiction versus marijuana addiction OH, WAIT … THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “MARIJUANA ADDICTION.” A former United States Marine, I have witnessed first-hand the addiction to prescription painkillers and been addicted to these pharmaceuticals, myself. Veterans Affairs literally would hand us painkillers like M&Ms … not so much since they recognized the damage they caused. So why won’t the feds (aka the VA) allow cannabis as an alternative? They won’t even recognize the benefits that cannabis has over, let’s say, Percocet. In the United States, 46 people die each day from opiate overdoses, and that number is growing weekly at an alarming rate. Could marijuana be what’s missing from addicts’ recovery, or could marijuana be the solution to replace opiates? A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association associated access to medical cannabis with significantly lower opioid-overdose mortality rates at the state level. States with medical-marijuana laws showed, on average, a 25-percent lower annual rate of death from opioid overdose compared with states lacking medical-marijuana laws. While addiction specialists have characterized switching from opiates to marijuana as “changing seats on the Titanic,” users’ success stories suggest otherwise. Fact: The pharmaceutical companies control the opiate distribution throughout this country. Fact: There is more money to be made in opiate-addiction and -recovery clinics than there is from any other drug-recovery program. More people are addicted to opiates than cocaine! So can it be said that, in turn, the government literally is controlled by the pharmaceutical companies and held at bay by this …? It’s really all about money and control. If the federal government and the pharmacy companies could figure out how to arrange, control, monitor and make money off cannabis, in my opinion, their efforts would end the opiate epidemic almost overnight. Here is how: They could restrict opiate distribution, as well as offer cannabis as an alternative for pain, thus putting fewer opiates into circulation across the United States. Yes, I believe it to be that simple. Enjoy the issue.

NATIONAL NEWS

Marijuana legalization fuels black market in other states

Rise in domestic smuggling coincides with fewer seizures at U.S. borders Marijuana smugglers are growing and shipping vast quantities of illicit cannabis across the United States. They’re mailing it, driving it and, in at least one case, flying it around in skydiving planes. They’re hiding it in truck beds and trunks and vacuum-sealing it to hide the smell as they pass police officers patrolling the interstates. Many are starting in states, such as Colorado, where growing marijuana is legal and then sending the drug elsewhere. In June, Colorado prosecutors said they busted a 74-person operation producing 100 pounds of marijuana per month — enough to generate $200,000 monthly, tax-free, for more than four years. Less marijuana is crossing the U.S. border, according to the U.S. Border Patrol. The agency’s marijuana seizures dropped by almost half between 2011 and 2016, falling from 2.5 million pounds to 1.3 million pounds.

CBD-based products play major role in legal cannabis Industry’s sales value projected to top $1.8 billion within 3 years A research report published by the Hemp Business Journal and Vote Hemp estimates that the total retail value of hemp products sold in the United States in 2016 was $688 million. Hemp CBD, a category with $130 million in sales and growing at a 53-percent AGR, have contributed significantly to the $688 million in total sales, according to the report. The hemp industry is projected to reach a value of $1.8 billion in sales by 2020, and the most popular products are hemp food, body care and CBD-based products.

LOCALLY GROWN NEWS

Contaminated marijuana still reaches Oregon consumers State confirms ‘mixed’ results from independent test Nine months after Oregon issued the toughest rules in the nation to keep pesticide-tainted marijuana off store shelves, the state acknowledged that some contaminated products continue to reach consumers. The admission underscores the tricky work of effectively regulating a plant long tied to illegal pesticide use. The independent tests produced mixed results that reflect the frustration of regulators, state-licensed testing labs and makers of the marijuana products themselves. Source: Oregonlive.com

American Cannabis Company complaint ignored in Medford Breidenthal flouts legal action against same-name business Attorneys for the publicly traded American Cannabis Company filed a cease-and-desist order against Doug Breidenthal’s American Cannabis Company in Medford. In defiance of the order, Breidenthal placed a new sign on the Medford property proclaiming the name “American Cannabis Company.” The Denver-based corporation claims copyright of the name. Letters sent to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, Breidenthal’s attorney and Breidenthal, himself, for comment on his actions have been ignored, an indication that Breidenthal considers himself above the law and the OLCC!

Dispensary’s advertising runs afoul of city ‘Cannaquins’ cost store owner $3,000 in fines The Portland Tribune reported that an Oregon dispensary owner has been fined $3,000 by the City of Wood Village, Ore., for setting up mannequins on the sidewalk to advertise his cannabis. These blond “cannaquins” are animated and brandish “Got Chronic” signs at potential clients. This apparently was a no-no.

Oregon Liquor Control Commission advertising rules: • That contains deceptive, false or misleading statements; • That contains any content that targets minors, such as images of minors, cartoons, toys, etc.; • That encourages the transportation of cannabis across state lines; • That asserts that cannabis items are safe because they are regulated by the OLCC and have been tested by a lab; • That claims recreational cannabis has curative or therapeutic effects; • That displays the consumption of marijuana items; • That contains material that encourages excessive or rapid consumption; or • That contains material that encourages the use of marijuana because of its intoxicating effect. *The OLCC’s stated goal is to prevent cannabis advertising that is attractive to minors, promotes excessive use, promotes illegal activity or presents a significant risk to public health and safety. More specifically, cannabusinesses cannot advertise cannabis in any way.

PLUSHBERRY RSO

BY SOLSGREEN | 55% THC 1% CBD | www.solsgreen.com

When it comes to RSO, this version is to be used sparingly — and when we say sparingly, we mean it! It’s always tricky at first to determine how much RSO you’ll need and how much your body can tolerate in one dose without knocking you out. Solsgreen Farms’ Plushberry RSO is no different. We found that one dose is about the size of a half a grain of rice. Highly concentrated, a syringe of 1 gram lasts a patient upward of one month. About the strain: Plushberry, a cross between Black Cherry Soda and Space Queen, is a hybrid strain that expresses a prominent indica dominance. Black Cherry Soda lends this strain an aromatic berry scent while Space Queen genetics promote heavy resin production. There are two main phenotypes of Plushberry. One grows smaller, pink-tinted plants with more sativa-dominant qualities; the other has bulkier, more indica-like formations. Plushberry typically induces a deep relaxation of mind and body with calming qualities that melt away stress. However, this batch of Plushberry is a great resource for cancer patients, people in severe pain and those with chronic insomnia. The Solsgreen process: Solsgreen Farms provides various strain-specific ethanol extracts or Solsgreen annual blends, including CBD strains like ACDC and Harlequin. A low-temperature, quick-wash method, with only food-grade, organic ethanol as the solvent, is used to prepare the initial extract mixture. Winterization, removal of all plant material, solvent purge and decarboxylation of the solution makes a cleaner, stronger RSO.

14

AUG/SEPT 2017

www.weedaficionadomag.com

What is RSO? Rick Simpson stumbled upon his cannabis fame purely by accident. Long before “Rick Simpson Oil” was coined a term, and long before cannabis was considered remotely mainstream, Rick Simpson was an engineer working in a Canadian hospital in 1997. Simpson was working in the hospital boiler room covering asbestos on pipes with potent aerosol glue. The toxic fumes caused a temporary nervous-system shock during which Simpson collapsed off his ladder and hit his head. He was knocked unconscious. After seeing a documentary highlighting the positive benefits of using cannabis, Simpson inquired about medical marijuana, but his doctor refused to consider it as a course of treatment. He ended up sourcing cannabis of his own accord and saw a significant improvement in his tinnitus and other symptoms. In 2003, three suspicious bumps appeared on Simpson’s arm. They turned out to be basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer. Simpson had successfully treated his symptoms with cannabis in the past, and he had heard about a study published by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in which THC was found to kill cancer cells in mice. He made the decision to treat his skin cancer topically, applying concentrated cannabis oil to a bandage and leaving the cancerous spots covered for several days. Then when he removed the bandages, the cancerous growths had disappeared. Although his physician refused to acknowledge cannabis as a treatment alternative, Simpson was now a true believer in the medicinal powers of cannabis.

OREGON GROWN CANNABIS Weed Aficionado asked James Scott of Medford’s Oregon Grown Cannabis to give us the low-down on his business and what’s in store for the cannabis industry. OGC is at 1201 W. Stewart Ave., Medford. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. WAM: When did your doors open for business? OGC: April 5, 2017 WAM: Do you service both recreational and medical users? OGC: Yes, we are a recreational store with a medical sales endorsement. WAM: What is the biggest draw at your location? OGC: Location and cheap prices ... good employees. We can’t name just one. WAM: What is the reason behind your business’ success? OGC: Well, it’s not who you know; it’s how you treat who you know … It’s all about networking in this business. WAM: What inspired your passion for this industry? OGC: Well, my passion comes from 10 years ago. I was in a wheelchair with paralyzing nerve damage, and I have used cannabis rubs and CBD oils to kick all prescription painkillers and learn to manage my disease better. And I thought to myself, ‘What can I do to help get this to people in need of this?’ So I prayed about it, and this is where is has lead me ...

WAM: What is your favorite part of the job? OGC: Just being able to be on the dispensary floor with the customer and pinching myself that we are really doing this! ... We have been wanting to do this since we were 14. Hahaha … We just get to be legal now. Seriously, we are all here trying to UNtarnish this industry’s stigma it has had for the past 80 years. WAM: What’s new for your business this year? OGC: Well, it’s hard to say where we are heading next. We have a few irons in the fire ... but we are definitely expanding — that’s for sure. WAM: What do think customers will demand more of in the future? OGC: A good variety of cheap grams … and an even better variety of cheap pre-rolls. WAM: What are the biggest challenges that cannabis business owners face in the industry? OGC: This entire industry is an uphill battle from regulations and compliance to just running a business. WAM: As the cannabis industry grows and improves, what developments are you most looking forward to in the future? OGC: The continuous look into CBD and what it can do — both mixed with THC, or just on its own — truly amazing and getting better every day.

I WAS IN A WHEELCHAIR WITH PARALYZING NERVE DAMAGE, AND I HAVE USED CANNABIS RUBS AND CBD OILS TO KICK ALL PRESCRIPTION PAINKILLERS ...

What to do when the

weed runs out (AND REALLY ALL THE TIME) HOLISTIC HEALTH COMMENTARY BY THE GREEN MAN, ANDREW MOUNT WHEN THE WEED RUNS OUT, we suddenly realize that sobriety soon will set in. When it occurs to us that we are about to rely upon our own internal harmony and accord — without the gentle aid of mother ganja — our attention shifts to matters at once practical and spiritual. How are we going to face stressful days and even longer-term challenges in life without our ritual herb? We are resilient creatures, just like the cannabis plant itself. Our consciousness can endure a shift from weed dependence to non-consumption virtually without trauma. However, there are time-honored virtues and practices — “holistics,” if you will — that can help. First and foremost, my life is undergirded by regular, internal repetition of mantra syllables. This is an unparalleled aid to focus and also is responsible for how I write today. The power of words is sacred, so even if you were to make up your own mantras, keeping them often in mind is a very enlightening experience. When our mental energy is coherent, focused like a laser, it is more concentrated and more expressive of the greater nature of consciousness. Without this practice, I would be subject to many more anxieties than I am at present, and I would be a much less effective communicator. Mantras are meant to resonate from the very core of our innermost mind, eventually becoming automatic. Secondly, I am a firm proponent of direct contact with nature and natural environments. If we are cooped up with computer screens and four walls around us, we may forget about subtle joys otherwise obtained outside with the vivid Mother Creation. Recent studies also have confirmed that soil microbes possess anti-depressant properties and can immunize our bodies against all manner of illnesses. If we think staying dirt-free all the time is a good idea, science appears to contradict this notion. Hence, gardening becomes medicinal. We also can surely recognize that sex — the communion of natural bodies — is crucial to the understanding of personal energy. Undeniably, there are benefits to its conscious practice. Without doubt, the most potent physical disciplines I know are yoga, chi gong, and tai chi.

Taoist principles that hold perfectly true today convey lessons about the balance of yin and yang. These are the natural masculine and feminine poles of universal force that exist in our personal energy matrix and our bodies themselves. To access our spirits fully, we must have some mastery over our physical energy field. Eating a proper diet, also an integral part of these disciplines, opens something in our hearts and minds, something of our higher sentient nature. And, of course, a transpersonal faith is of equal significance when gaining insight into our very human condition. What scientists and philosophers might use as a synonym for “faith” is the term “onotology,” the study of Being, itself. All the great modern and postmodern thinkers would agree that rigorous introspection proves invaluable to self-realization. Meditation and formal yoga practice represent total holistic health approaches that can fully balance one’s energies and mind. Any form of sincere prayer also qualifies as a martial practice that yields an opening of spirit. So having no weed, we wonder about our deeper nature. We close our eyes and go on a self-guided meditation. We build first a sense of spaciousness in our minds, free of the taint of ego and self-judgement. Then we sound a few mantra to seal this space as holy for prayer. Suddenly, calm prevails in our center, and our body relaxes easily.

Meditation and formal yoga practice represent total holistic health approaches that can fully balance one’s energies and mind. 22

Next, we may choose an inspiring musical piece or devotional song we know to resonate with the principles of harmony and love. Joy invariably will begin to well somewhere in one’s heart once this space for true self is created. Indeed, self-expression is another very real healing balm to all that ails us. When we find ourselves being artful and creative, nothing can really upset our being. It has been said that weed accentuates our sense of prayerful communion with art, self and nature. It can be a catalyst for this, most assuredly. However, we also have a highly developed central nervous system that can be consciously attuned to ever higher frequencies and understandings. My son, Rylan, is a budding parkour genius, and he has a tremendous sense of artful movement in his 16-year old body. It so amazes me to watch such self-expression in action that it directly moves me to do something masterful myself. “To create and inspire movement is what I use as a drug,” he says. “When I’m stressed, instead of smoking a joint, I do parkour.” Of course, something in his father is proud of this holistic attitude. Finally, it must be said that to apply our gifts of personal skillfulness toward establishing an egalitarian and altruistic society is where we all have an opportunity to play. I think going back to some form of common land stewardship is a just and favorable solution to unfair wealth distribution. What to do when the weed runs out is less important than what to do when the food runs out. We have the means to increase food security and social equity if we just apply ourselves more wholeheartedly. There may be a time of acute hardship coming if we don’t do something. Store up extra weed and concentrates as special medicine, keeping them fresh for times of prolonged emergency. Yet learning to be selfsufficient in every way possible, both internally and externally, is the way of a holistic person. Being a holistic human means being part of the solution, not the perpetuation of problems. Mood, behavior and emotional intelligence are well within our ability to control — or at least influence — through mindfulness practices alone. The ensuing dopamine response of knowing oneself to be both a creative and positive contributor to human development is probably what the ancients called “bliss.” I believe we should strive for this rather than any alternate reality. If we are able to admit unwellness in our lives, then we must also be willing to admit we possess the healing solution simultaneously.

2198 Newly enacted legislation renames state’s cannabis regulatory agency By Becky Garrison

edical marijuana in Oregon warranted a number of legislative measures this year. The coexistence of the state’s older program with the rapidly growing, legalized recreational market prompted lawmakers in May to pass Senate Bill 1057, followed in August by House Bill 2198. Under SB 1057, an Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) cardholder can grow six plants in addition to the four plants permitted under Measure 91. Also, this bill will remove the restriction on the number of immature (nonflowering) plants an OMPP cardholder can possess. In addition, SB 1057 will permit some licensed growers to use an additional 10 percent of their space to produce medicinal cannabis as long as they give away 75 percent of this product. A new name for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) acknowledges its oversight of cannabis. The passage of HB 2198 christened OLCC as the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission. The law also allows select medical growers who meet a list of requirements to transfer up to 20 pounds of their crop to a recreational processor or wholesaler. Eco Firma Farms CEO Jesse Peters offers a succulent history that led to the development of these laws. “When the adult use program came online in full effect, it didn’t take long for most dispensaries to switch from medical to rec, giving medical producers no sizable outlet to sell their cannabis. For many medical growers, the rules also put them in a position where they couldn’t convert their farms to rec. Both financial and legal reasons — like zoning, opt out and price gouging from landlords — dissuaded medical farms from making the transition. Because of this, there’s a hole in our new system, and obviously, this doesn’t look good to the DOJ.” Anthony Johnson, director of New Approach Oregon, the chief petitioner of Measure 91 legalization, and co-owner of Duff Johnson Consulting, expounds on the motivations behind these two laws. “The motivations behind SB 1057 were avoiding federal interference (by eliminating unlimited non-flowering medical marijuana plants) and escaping federal prosecution if the federal government ever targets recreational cannabis businesses (by allowing adult-use licensees the ability to quickly become medical-only cannabis businesses). “Some of the motivations of HB 2198 were bringing small, medical cannabis farmers into the state-regulated, adult-use market to curtail illicit sales and provide a lifeline to compassionate providers who are still taking care of patients (by allowing and establishing a government body, the Oregon Cannabis Commission, to advocate for the best interests of the OMMP).” Samantha Montanaro, owner/operator of Prism House PDX and co-curator of Tokeativity, offers a patient’s perspective on this bill. “The over-regulation of the rec market has made it REALLY difficult for growers to navigate the system and stay on the market, so many have stayed in the medical space. The medical market is sacred and essential for patients needing medicine. The more challenges they are presented with, the fewer farms that will stay in the regulated market. Tracking immature plants seems overkill.” Montanaro also echoes the concerns stated by a number of patients over the OLCC’s management of a product used for medicinal purposes. “It just doesn’t make sense to me,” she says. “It will never be managed the way a medical product should be.” The effectiveness of these laws is difficult to assess until the new regulations take effect. While much work remains to be done, Johnson says he believes both bills provide an opportunity to start righting the ship. “Allowing medical providers access to the adult-use market, and the formation of the Oregon Cannabis Commission, provide a foundation to protect and improve the OMMP,” he says. “Oregon’s recreational system will be fine; we will continue creating jobs and generating millions for the state.” The expansion of cannabis businesses is in sight, he adds. “We must decrease regulatory hurdles and continue to innovate, such as legalizing adult cannabis consumption lounges, expanding delivery services, allowing longer hours of operations and, ultimately, ending the prohibition on regulated cannabis commerce that still exists over large swaths of Oregon.” A list of Oregon’s 2017 cannabis laws can be found at www.cannalawblog.com/ oregons-2017-cannabis-laws-the-definitive-list/

What others had to say about Ananda Farms Oregon Diesel: “Sweet, sweet relief. This strain vaulted me over the void. I was up in the clouds, but I could run around in the clouds! I was writing, I was designing, I was thinking. My depression lifted for the first time in eight months. I was crying in relief because I remembered who I was. I have no words. WAM: You founded Beverly Hills Cannabis Club more than two decades ago. How have you ensured the club remains cutting-edge in an industry that’s made such significant strides in the past few years? CHERYL: I’ve always looked at cannabis as a beautiful plant that simply needed a makeover or rebranding campaign. Not only does the plant heal a multitude of illnesses and aid mindfulness and wellness, but it also can heal our economies worldwide. I learned the truth about cannabis and its history: It had been used legally for thousands of years around the world before being vilified as ‘reefer madness’ in the ridiculous government and media campaigns to destroy the plant and the people who used it. I knew that if properly rebranded, we could remove the stigma and take cannabis to the mainstream with a new face. If cannabis were discovered today somewhere in the jungle, it would be considered a miracle drug and superfood. So that’s how I marketed it. The truth of my experiences and others that we involved in the media strategy started an awakening around the world.

SETTING IS MORE ACCEPTED

AUG/SEPT 2017

www.weedaficionadomag.com

WAM: You’ve been a big proponent of consuming cannabis in all manner of foods. How have you seen that approach enhance marijuana’s appeal for people who may prefer not to smoke? CHERYL: I’m a foodie. I love cooking, healthy food and fine dining. I have learned from some of the best chefs in Beverly Hills how to make my favorite dishes with their recipes and my ‘special ingredient’ (cannabis, of course). Most of my friends hated smoking, and vapes hadn’t been made yet when we started, so instead of serving the stereotypical ‘brownie,’ I started having private dinners at our home with celebrity friends and others in ‘high society,’ clients etc. Eating cannabis-infused food in a finedining setting is more accepted as ‘normal’ by the mainstream. WAM: Cannabis pairing with gourmet cuisine is trend you’ve taken to the next level. What are some of your favorite foods that complement cannabis? CHERYL: My favorite pairings are mostly healthy choices, and sometimes I splurge on food I shouldn’t indulge in calorie-wise. Keep in mind that almost any dish with an oil or butter base can be infused with cannabis. So the possibilities are endless, from starters and salads to main dishes and desserts. Some of my favorites are spicy, deep-fried shrimp, chicken Parmesan, tacos (meat or fish), tuna tartare, lobster Bolognese, chocolate lava cake, butterscotch budino, even an appetizer with sea urchin, fish roe and edible flowers.

WAM: What about weed paired with wine? CHERYL: I love it! I don’t drink liquors. However, weed and wine go great together. We’ve been doing cannabis tastings and wine pairings for more than 20 years. I’ve always said that I think cannabis should be served along with wine at dinner and be openly accepted as ‘normal.’ WAM: Do you have a favorite commercially produced edible? What about a homemade edible treat? CHERYL: I love infused chocolate cake and apple pie. My mom made the ‘normal’ versions during my childhood. It’s great comfort food and brings back happy memories of my mom who died this past year of cancer. I tend to eat my own edibles mostly with her recipes for everything so I can keep her image and spirit with me always. As far as commercially produced edibles, I’ve rarely tried them. I’ve had the fantasy recently that I would go on the road around the world like Anthony Bourdain and try the best of everything cannabis in multiple cities/countries and shoot it all in a documentary or web series. Oregon definitely will be on that map, and I look forward to manifesting that vision. WAM: You trademarked the term ‘Stiletto Stoners.’ How have you made marijuana use more attractive to women in general? CHERYL: By focusing on the women in the world, we’ve been very impactful with mainstream media and social media. About 85 percent of all household decisions are made by the woman of the house. The cannabis industry has a higher rate of growth and executive positions for women than most other businesses. Most of the successful women who consume cannabis also are involved in fashion, entertainment, music, film, and yes, many wear stilettos. Focus groups and political experts will tell you that when you ‘win the women vote and the mom vote,’ you win elections. In the immortal words of Beyoncé, ‘Who runs the world?

GIRLS!’ By empowering other women to come out of the green closet, we can work together to achieve our missions and fulfill our destinies. Many women have backgrounds in nursing, medicine, cooking, caregiving, etc., so cannabis and women are a perfect and powerful match. WAM: Now that recreational use of marijuana touches all demographics, what types of ‘420-friendly’ businesses and services do you see on the horizon? CHERYL: The possibilities are endless. Even with varying signals out of Washington, the cannabis industry is predicted to expand at a double-digit pace over the next four years. To be specific, analysts predict that legalized marijuana will grow at a compound annual rate of 26 percent until 2021. In North America, consumers spent $53.3 billion on marijuana in 2016, only $6.7 billion of which was actually legal, according to a widely cited market research report. This represents a major market potential for the burgeoning legalized industry. If this wasn’t reason enough to be excited, the political change in sentiment toward cannabis should seal the deal. Polls show that 80 percent of Americans approve of legal access to medical cannabis, and 60 percent approve of full adult-use legalization. These are great signs for those in the business. WAM: You’re trying to elevate the image of cannabis and its users. Do you think that derogatory or crude strain names (like Green Poison and Purple Fuck) detract from your efforts? CHERYL: It both hurts and helps. For those who take this serious as a medicine, people react poorly to that nomenclature. When ‘normies’ or mainstream people, ask me about some of the ‘names’ like you mentioned (or Alaska Thunderfuck), it’s good because it opens up the dialogue and discussion. For me personally, I prefer more respectful names for the plant, which is reflected in my mission.

WAM: Given that California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana, why do you think it took so long for residents to vote in favor of recreational sales? CHERYL: California is a huge area with a huge economy that could be divided into three or more states. There’s an enormous amount of infighting among activists, growers, dispensary owners, etc. There are huge egos, huge money and huge territory involved. Hopefully, things will move smoothly as we evolve. I think everyone should get in a room, enjoy some fine cannabis and work it out. There’s plenty of room for everyone. Another issue is that some growers have no desire for regulations or taxes; they prefer to sell in out-of-state markets and continue to risk getting caught shipping product out of state. It’s going to be interesting to see how things move forward. I receive thousands of inquiries a month from people all over the world who want to get involved in the industry, who are well-educated, well-financed and focused. Our community must stop the fighting and work together; otherwise, things could become very difficult. While people are fighting, new entrepreneurs are focused and building companies in multiple markets. Big money is here for those investments in the hundreds of millions of dollars. WAM: With marijuana now legal in Nevada, how high are the industry’s stakes? (Pun intended.) CHERYL: I’ve had a residence in Las Vegas for a few years now. The key to success there is the enormous tourism industry and the fact that there is reciprocity and now fully legal adult use of cannabis there. I’m happy to have played a part in building that market. We are working on investing and converting various properties, hotels, etc. into cannabis-friendly resorts. As I had predicted, their biggest issue is selling out of cannabis because the demand is so ‘high’ (pun intended). WAM: How can Americans get the federal government to remove marijuana from the Schedule I controlled substance category? CHERYL: Stay active with the government officials and your community. We need to focus on clinical trials and proof that cannabis is a medicine far safer than pharmaceuticals. Work along with other activist groups like the Women’s March, Indivisible Movement, etc. There are many likeminded people who will join us if we reach out. I’m working with scientists in Canada and in Israel, my favorite being Dr. Raphael Mechoulam at the University of Jerusalem. Getting that research out to the media and the public to influence public opinion and government officials is the way. We can’t just sit back and expect others to do the work. Each and every one of us owe it to each other to stay active in the repeal of cannabis prohibition and improving our economies, creating jobs for our communities and living a more fulfilling life. WAM: Do you believe decriminalizing marijuana will happen this decade? CHERYL: Yes, I do. But I must admit that Trump and Sessions concern me. I believe it’s up to us to make sure it happens. WAM: Given that U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is such a harsh critic of marijuana and state legalization, how concerned are you about impacts he’ll make on the cannabis industry over the next four years?

CHERYL: I’m very concerned. I’m now 57 years old. I’ve never seen anything in our country as crazy as what is happening now. That’s why none of us can take our freedom, safety and careers for granted. Our rights could be stripped away in the blink of an eye. We need to focus on all of the good that comes from cannabis and how it is benefitting communities, not hurting them. WAM: You tout both ‘grassroots initiatives’ and ‘viral marketing’ as key to raising mainstream awareness of cannabis. But which strategy do you think has been most successful so far? CHERYL: The secret is using all of them strategically. It’s the synergy of the strategy that is key, timing, having your grassroots, social media ready to carry all of the mainstream media to more of the masses. Anyone from any computer or cellular can share social media and be a part of the cure/ mission. Increasing your following and engagement are vitally important. The more eyes on the message the better.

I LOVE WHAT OREGON IS DOING AND HAS DONE FOR THE INDUSTRY ON A WORLDWIDE LEVEL ... I’M ALSO VERY IMPRESSED BY THE

entrepreneurs and women LEADING THE INDUSTRY THERE

36

AUG/SEPT 2017

www.weedaficionadomag.com

WAM: If you could change one thing about the cannabis industry in this country, what would it be? CHERYL: The lack of compassion between some of the people involved is incredibly disappointing. The Internet attacks on people are done anonymously because someone may not like the way someone else dresses or the fact that one person may live in Beverly Hills and others in the Emerald Triangle. We are all unique, beautiful human beings who should find our common bonds, not create drama out of hatred or jealousy. I had always envisioned so much love and caring being involved in the cannabis world. I surround myself with positive people and energy. I immediately delete, block and stay away from negativity and negative people. Life is just too short. Every single moment we have in life is to be cherished not wasted. WAM: How do you respond to criticism that you’re not a figure for cannabis reform but rather a savvy self-promoter? CHERYL: Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: ‘First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win.’ Ð Mahatma Gandhi. For me it’s all about the mission and the plant. I didn’t realize anyone was criticizing me (laughs). Seriously, I shield myself from that negative energy. I got out of high school a long time ago. The dirty, open secret is that public figures routinely have been mocked, savaged, hated and reviled for simply being public. Once you are a public figure, you no longer have the luxury of privacy. In my day-to-day work, I’ve never had anyone criticize me to my face. On the contrary, I have a very loving, warm and respected following in my public life and social media life. As far as being a savvy self-promoter, I take that as a compliment. Promotions and personal branding are an essential ingredient to anyone’s success. Perhaps, it might be better to learn from a master of self-promotion and what I’m doing rather than to criticize what I do it so well. WAM: You became a medical marijuana patient to treat several diagnoses. How is cannabis use alleviating some of your recent health setbacks? CHERYL: That’s a great question. As you may know, my mother died this past year of cancer very suddenly, and it was devastating for me. After the funeral, I made the decision to fly back to LA to drive one of my cars crosscountry, to get more of my clothes and personal items back to my hometown and to be there for my dad as a caregiver. The day before I was to leave, I was walking one of my friends’ dogs and was struck by a hit-and-run driver. I ended up in the trauma unit for several days. Initially, I had issues with paralysis and some nerve damage, which faded. But once I regained consciousness, the hospital informed me that my scans showed four new tumors and masses that I should ‘take care of immediately.’ When I realized I was facing four different surgeries impacting four different organs and an additional skin cancer

problem, I knew I needed to spend more time in my home state of Ohio. I’ve been dividing my time between LA and my hometown since then. I’ve worked with Ohio for years in hopes of getting legal cannabis, and finally they have passed the law. Sadly though, there is no legal cannabis here yet. So, to answer your question, I’ve had to ‘smile and bear the pain.’ Without medication, walking is a challenge. I’ve spent most of my time here bedridden or in a wheelchair. When I have speaking engagements in a legal state or go back to California, I’m OK. WAM: What product have you found most effective for daily dosing to ease pain and other symptoms, rather than to get high? CHERYL: I never leave home without my vape pens. I love vaping throughout the day to ease my chronic-pain issues. I medicate with both our private reserve sativas, indicas and a variety of hybrids. I also have Cannatonic and Harlequin CBD strains that I find effective. Topicals, edibles, juicing and vaping all work very well for me. The vaping is the most convenient and discreet in public. I don’t see cannabis as ‘getting high’; I see cannabis as a wellness product that everyone should consume in some fashion. I see it as a quality-of-life issue. WAM: What Oregon strain do you choose or recommend most often? CHERYL: I’m not sure yet because, up until now, I haven’t tried any (laughs). I have a trip to Oregon planned in the next few months and look forward to sampling as many Oregon strains as possible. My Oregon friends and I usually see each other at trade shows, and they always invite me to visit their farms and businesses. Now I’m making time to put that on my bucket list. As I said earlier, I had envisioned producing an Anthony Bourdaininspired tasting-tour documentary. Let’s see if I can make it happen. WAM: Do you believe Oregon is a trendsetter in the industry … or just California’s wacky neighbor to the north? CHERYL: I love what Oregon is doing and has done for the industry on a worldwide level, not just here in the United States. I’m also very impressed by the entrepreneurs and women leading the industry there. From a few thousand miles away, it looks amazing. I’m very excited to spend time there and have several investors interested in the market. We also are considering expanding our brand there, as well as matching businesses up with funding. Wacky? (laughs) Wacky can be a good thing. I’ve always considered myself a bit ‘wacky.’ I think it’s part of our charm, right? Who wants to be like everyone else and live in a cookie-cutter society? I think California could learn a lot from Oregon. I love looking at the photos my friends send me from their huge fields of cannabis in Oregon. It’s breathtaking!

Can we PORTLAND RESIDENT’S TELEVISION SERIES REVEALS REALITIES OF CANNABIS

Q & A with Samantha Myers of “High Intentions”

change the world? WEED AFICIONADO MAGAZINE took a few minutes to sit down with Samantha Myers, from Portland, who’s marketing her new television series, “High Intentions,” for syndication.

WAM: What inspired you to create your new series, “High Intentions”? SAM: I was at a crossroads in my life, personally, and had read some quote online about merging your passion with career and being happy forever. I figured, hey, I like reality television, and I love weed, and that is the really short story of how ‘High Intentions’ was born.

WAM: When did you start using cannabis? SAM: I started using cannabis regularly at the age of 27 years old; after about nine months of using cannabis, I quit drinking alcohol and have been free from alcohol since March 1 of 2012. WAM: One of your tag lines for your show is, ‘Cannabus change the world? Weed like to think so ... ‘ SAM: What does that mean exactly and how can you change the world with weed? It’s a question more so than an answer. Can a bus (Cannabus) change the world? We’d (Weed) like to think so! Yes, in my opinion, it definitely can change the world. It won’t be some big feat like world peace or end homelessness overnight, but the butterfly effect legalization will have on us all will be tremendous. From the money we spend on law enforcement being properly allocated to fighting the crimes we really need fought, to more jobs, less crime and DUI’s, etc. ... it is safe to say we are already changing the world as we smoke, I mean speak. WAM: What effect do you feel the legalization of marijuana will have on the next generation of children, teens and young adults? SAM: I really hope to see generations to come being more comfortable with cannabis in general. I would love to turn on the TV in 10 years and instead of seeing the father come home after a hard day’s work and filling his glass with booze, that he breaks out a bong or joint. I would love to just have it be more normalized. I really do see that happening; we are on an awesome trajectory! WAM: Since an estimated 60 percent of Americans believe cannabis should be legal, how do we get the pharmaceutical and alcohol industries to not use dark money and lobby so hard against lifting the prohibition? SAM: In my opinion, we are just going to have to get the pot smokers to take these jobs and get into

these industries where cannabis users are still misrepresented. Until pot smokers are in charge of these laws, nothing will ever change.

WAM: What impact do you think legalizing marijuana would have on the economy and health care system if any? SAM: I think it will have a very positive impact on the general health of people, but the obvious negative impact it will have on the cancer and pharmaceutical industries are the obvious reasons we have not heard much on the idea of federal legalization. WAM: How did you view marijuana back when alcohol was your thing? Did you consider yourself to be an alcoholic? SAM: Yes, I was. My first time smoking was when I was in the 6th grade. I was 12 years old. I didn’t get high for the first 10 times I smoked, and then when I finally did get high, it was too much for me! I could not handle how I felt. Now, I smoke about 3 to 4 grams of oil (concentrated cannabis) a week. WAM: Do you fear a Monsanto takeover of the crop or what Jeff Sessions is trying to do? SAM: I fear anything the GOP is trying to do with cannabis, but I am hopeful the state will still have the ultimate say. Concerning Monsanto, I do worry about it but know that something like genetically modified weed will not do well in the cannabis community, so I welcome them to try. WAM: Why did you begin to smoke marijuana? SAM: I smoked because I wanted relief from my pain, anxiety and depression. I was willing to try anything to feel better! WAM: One of the topics that your show will cover that piqued our interested was: Do you think that marijuana smokers are better in bed? SAM: Haha! Pot smokers are better at everything they do. Have you ever seen a stoner have weed but no smoking apparatus? Exactly. They will figure it out and succeed — better at everything!

■ Sanitize the work area. ■ Clean tools. ■ Prep media. ■ If using Rockwool, soak in 5.8 pH-adjusted water for 12 hours minimum. ■ I prefer Oasis Rootcubes to Rockwool, as there is no need to do a long presoak. ■ Root Riot Cubes come moist but, like all media, need a presoak prior to use. ■ My preferred method of preparing cubes is to use Xtreme Gardening’s Azos. ■ If using a “clone machine,” remove filter to help prevent clogging and running dry.

Consult this how-to guide from the ‘clone factory’ BY LEAF BARRET

selection ■ Choose a healthy plant to cut from. Make sure it has received fresh water at least 12 hours prior to promote success. ■ When taking cuts, choose cuttings with at least two nodes. ■ Cuts should be done in the early morning to help keep cuttings turgid. ■ Timing and sharp tools are the keys to moving quickly but safely; scalpels leave nasty cuts if you’re not careful!

working the cut pro tip ■ After taking the cut, I place it in water and continue along until my cup is full. Transfer each filled cup to the prep area and quickly wash cuttings in a 1-to-9 bleach-water solution to kill any pathogens. ■ Next, make a clean, 45-degree cut on the bottom of the stem about a half-inch below the node.

■ If cuts are droopy, or you have a ton to do, they like refrigerators. Placed in the refrigerator overnight, cuttings become more turgid and rigid.

■ Scarifying: Very gently, with light pressure, push the blade to the end of the stem, over the node removing a fine, outer layer. ■ Proceed to gently scratch, not cut, around the area of the bottom node. ■ Cut off any unnecessary leaves. ■ Give the plant a “haircut” on the top leaves to help stop transpiration rates and make the plant focus on rooting. ■ Take cutting and dip it in hormone/rooting compound of choice; place it in media. ■ Once cutting is placed in media, spray it with water and cover it with a dome. ■ Maintain 100-percent humidity for the first three days, crack dome vents to 25 percent for two days, then open vents all the way, remove the dome and harden off.

■ Clone machines are awesome and my personal favorite. Clean the machine, drop in some Azos and plug in some clones. ■ I recommend using a Hortilux PowerVEG, keeping it at least 12 inches above the canopy until roots appear.

■ Ass soon as root mass appears, transplant the cutting into medium of choice. ■ I like to use heat mats, setting the temperature to 78 degrees to keep the butts warm.

Tasting of candy, it brings on some strong, head-based effects. Some head pressure is common, but this strain’s indica side comes out later, leading to a body-melting calm. Overall, Odyssey will take you on a smooth journey.

Ananda has been rocking some pretty high-THC flower this season, and this Moon Shine doesn’t disappoint! We found that while it relieved some pretty hefty stress, it allowed us to perform all of our duties without putting us in a daze whatsoever. Some found themselves getting tired after the high dissipated, but that may have been from all of the work they got done that day! Great flower! Great job Ananda!

Uniquely energetic and lively, the effects may not be best for those of us who are naturally wound tight. Along with a caffeine-like kick, increased sexual appetite may be a bonus. EDIBLECONNOISSEUR THC DOSING ACCURACY

DOCTOR PHILL’S PHARMA CBD|THC ELIXIR First and foremost, we feel that Doctor Phill’s ‘pill’ concept is great! For prescription opiate users, Doctor Phill’s ‘pills’ are the ideal substitute … a little pricey at $5 a pill but well worth using in lieu of an opiate. Our first recommendation is to take them on an empty stomach for faster and better results. A person who lives with chronic pain, WAM’s publisher found that taking one in the morning gave him enough relief throughout the day without making him loopy or tired. Doctor Phill’s Pharma offers three options for pills — THC, CBD and a combination — meaning they can treat the gamut of conditions. If you’re looking to just get high, this is not the right kind of ‘medicine.’

This is our first review of the BhombChelly’s line, for good reason. We wanted to see if their process had changed, and as of late that does not seem to be the case. We tried to reach out to BhombChelly’s directly to let them know that we don’t feel their dosing is accurate, but they never called us back. The ‘watermelon’ flavor is fantastic. But at the end of the day, if you’re looking to medicate with an edible, there are better options on the market. Let us just say, above all, the THC dosing is not accurate. For a single serving at about 13 milligrams, the package is deceptive for sure at 0.3. By double-dosing, you would be more apt to feel the cannabis’ effects. The average tolerance for most WAM employees is pretty high (no pun intended), meaning anyone with a lower tolerance could be affected differently. But when factoring in pricing and dosage inaccuracy, your money is better spent on similar products by other manufacturers. 50

DOSAGE: 50 mg AS TESTED: Recreational AVAILABLE FOR MEDICAL / RECREATIONAL: Both

Unlike Lunchbox Alchemy’s Squib, the Shrapnel won’t take you on a wild ride, but it will definitely warm your cockles. We tested the ‘green apple,’ and it was delicious! We enjoyed it not only as a hard candy, but also liquefied it into a club soda sitting in the sunshine and yes … yes … yes, it was just as good! We can say, without a doubt, that Lunchbox knows what they are doing when it comes to making edibles. The Shrapnel fills you with a warm body high that is perfect when camping or just relaxing. We did find that in hotter weather the candy tends to be messy, so keep it chilled this summer before enjoying. Dosing is on you, really. Each piece is almost 5 milligrams, but slightly smaller and larger pieces sometimes make it more difficult to gauge. Yet they are still very enjoyable.

VITONIC CANNABIS INFUSED BEVERAGE Flavor: Mango OMG! WAM’s own publisher tested this product and can’t say enough wonderful things about Vitonic! The dispensary owners where we purchased this product warned us that it was VERY accurate for dosing. Yes it is!! So we recommend starting with one small sip! Then see where 1 to 2 ounces takes you. DO NOT drink the whole bottle in one sitting no matter how good this stuff tastes! Unless you are a thrill seeker, then have at it! We drank our bottle sparingly and, from taste to dosage, highly recommend it!! HIGHLY! AMAZING! The ‘mango’ version has a wonderful flavor that makes the cannabis faint to almost nonexistent. The effects are intense, and you can’t help but feel happiness after partaking in Vitonic! For medical patients, the only downside is wanting to drink the entire bottle because it tastes that good! Its pricing also is very affordable for the dosage in each bottle. Great job Vitonic!

STUNNINGSTASHES LUXURY STORAGE ENHANCES CANNABIS COLLECTIONS By Emily Earlenbaugh

Where do you keep your weed? For many, the norm has been to squirrel stashes away in a shoebox at the back of a closet — or in an unused drawer. But as luxury tastes in cannabis have continued to develop, many are bringing their buds out of hiding and into upscale cases designed especially for our favorite herb. From smell-proof purses with locks or secret compartments, to beautifully designed wooden cases and humidors, there is a storage solution for everyone. Here are a few options that exemplify this growing trend.

1 | ANNABIS KIRSTIN BAG Speaking of luxury stash bags, Annabis has a whole line of luxury cannabis handbags, and there are so many great options. The Kirstin has become my new, go-to purse. On the outside, it is luxurious and stylish. The aroma-block leather keeps smells sealed in — but also looks and feels great. There are multiple compartments on the inside and outside of the bag, including a secret smell-proof compartment hidden in the lining. This ensures that even with the purse open, there is no odor. Now you can avoid getting weird looks from cashiers when you open your purse to pay for something and the store fills up with that familiar dank aroma.

$225 | Available at www.annabisstyle.com

2 | APOTHECARRY The Apothecarry takes luxury storage to the next level. With artful design and humidor technology, this case knows how to treat your buds right. This humidor is designed for cannabis, not tobacco, so it keeps marijuana at the perfect humidity. The case fits four of your favorite strains and the tools you need to enjoy them. It comes with a rolling tray, four custom-fitted jars, a grinder, smaller jars and tools for working with concentrates, and it even has special space for additional tools like a vape pen. To top it all off, there is a lock to keep the contents safe and secure.

Inside, there is a wooden rolling tray, Hakuna grinder and jar, all perfectly fitted into the box’s internal compartments. With everything in one spot, including the stylish rolling tray, rolling joints is a breeze. Hakuna has a whole line of boxes and even some artfully designed faux book boxes, for a grownup spin on your undercover stash.

Whether you are looking for a sophisticated stash box, or a discreet and fashionable way to carry cannabis on the go, there are plenty of options. CampWannaMakeaHeady stokes columnist’s passion for glassblowing I HAD HOPED one day to meet Joe Peters, just to be able to watch him conjure thoughts into life forms, ask him questions and witness the making of a masterpiece. My initial fascination with Joe’s art arose from a love for bees and honeycomb. I couldn’t believe the flawlessness of his flame-work and that I had found an artist who took things I loved and made them one — bees, art, cannabis and getting medicated. Through Instagram, I reached out to Joe, and one day, he posted about Campwannamakeaheady, and I lost it! How amazing would that be? I knew I wasn’t a qualifying applicant, so I didn’t even think it was an option. But when Joe asked if I would attend the last days of Campwannamakeaheady as the “camp nurse,” that’s when I really understood the power of Instagram. When I read the message, I was sitting at dinner with my fiancé and some friends. I popped open Instagram and saw a message from @joepglass. My heart sank, then … Wait a minute, let me read that over and over — to make sure this is real. I was so honored, my dream has come true! When that morning came, driving up the winding driveway to beautiful DreamLab Glass studio, it all hit harder than ever — I was about to meet Joe Peters and Banjo Glass, not to mention all the incredible artists who were attending camp. Who was I? Do I know enough to be there? Will I disappoint him? The frantic nerves started to kick in full-force. But moments later, I saw Joe walking up the hill by the giant teepee, with the most welcoming smile and open arms. My nerves turned into excitement, and the dream became a reality. Arriving a couple of days after camp had begun, I walked down to DreamLab Glass, with my fiancé by my side, and met one after another of the incredibly talented glass artists. I was so curious watching Joe and Banjo work the glass. I had never seen flame-working in person before, and to be able to see these two at work was a true blessing. While the two of them worked furiously behind the flame, I rolled a ton of joints and asked the artists about

themselves, what they wanted to take back from camp and about their specialties. I was amazed how each was distinct in his or her expression through art. I wanted to know where the idea for this Campwannamakeaheady originated. Come to find out, Joe had been an Eagle Scout as a boy then later on, worked at a Boy Scouts camp for three summers. Later on, he taught glassblowing at an overnight summer camp called Snow Farm for three more summers. With a love for camp, teaching and flameworking, Joe wanted to bring the two together — so Campwannamakeaheady was born. This was the first year, hosted in the mountains of Evergreen, Colo., at DreamLab Glass. Requests to attend camp surprised Joe, but they managed to narrow campers down to about 30. Joe wanted them to enjoy the experience of being at camp, watching intense collaboration and demonstrations, networking, education, community and incredible food! Both Joe and Banjo worked from 11 a.m. to 2, 3 and even 4 a.m. completing masterpieces and teaching us all. The glass industry has always had leading artists exploring the boundaries of expression, concepts, functionality and ingenuity. They set no criteria for other artists but expand their capacity to collaborate with one another. Joe and Banjo shared a vision of creating a masterpiece and communicated their vision through small sketches, a focused conversation (undoubtedly with a joint in hand) and a studio filled with people. As the camp’s last day came, many artists didn’t want to leave. We all watched the final pieces of “Beautiful Buffalo Goddess” come together as the sun peered over the Rocky Mountains. It was surreal; all those tiny pieces were now one. The torches still blowing fiercely behind us, we all cheered, hugged and shared a big sigh of relief that nothing had been dropped or broken! Campwannamakeaheady was truly a beautiful experience. I have a huge appreciation for the art, the artists and the time it takes to complete something so magnificent.
