What does it take to be a weed aficionado? Publisher reflects on early days as cannabis-loving entrepreneur
EDITOR IN CHIEF
S.J. Clelland editor@wammediallc.com GRAPHIC DESIGNER
THE HOLIDAYS PUT ME IN A NOSTALGIC, REFLECTIVE MOOD. I reflect a lot on my life, my past and my childhood — for good reasons, I think. I didn’t have a bad one; in fact, as I recall, it was quite normal and enjoyable as far as childhoods go. I was an only child, but not a spoiled one. At age 12, I landed my first job: a paper route. From that point on, I was always gainfully employed right up to now. Thanks to you people! What does this have to do with the question of being a weed aficionado? Well, let’s see … Some gauge being a weed aficionado on travel and life experiences. How much herb have you smoked and where? That seems to sum it up, but this is not the case as I see it. Maybe as a self-proclaimed weed aficionado, I feel that my own reasons will make sense, given it was all my idea. LOL! … Am I stoned? Maybe a little. I think that being a weed aficionado is as simple as being passionate about the plant and having a love for everything cannabis. That’s it. My first experience with marijuana also was around age 12, when I bought my first dime bag from the local Russian connect. He ripped me off and sold me oregano! After that, I was determined to find my own source that I could trust. Lo and behold, while on my paper route the very next day, I stumbled upon my neighborhood biker. (Yes, I did grow up in a pretty rough area.) I bought my first real bag of weed from the local biker and sold him the weekly paper all in one swoop! … Does that make me a weed aficionado? Maybe. I knew it made me one of two things: an entrepreneur with a passion for weed. As time went on, I found that I didn’t like smoking marijuana, at least not the crap that we got in the Midwest! It was horrid in the ’80s! However, I did rediscover cannabis when it became medically legal; after that, my entire life changed. Some say that weed aficionados need to learn how to grow weed, and not just smoke it. Once again: “I think that being a weed aficionado is as simple as being passionate about the plant and having a love for everything cannabis. That’s it.” All the best and Happy Holidays,

Medical Marijuana Inc. announced participation at Marijuana Business Conference and Exposition
Viral sensation announces donation to U.S. veterans
Medical Marijuana Inc., the first-ever publicly traded cannabis company in the United States, attended and presented at the largest marijuana conference in the world, the Marijuana Business Conference and Exposition, Nov. 15-17 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas. Medical Marijuana Inc.’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. Stuart Titus planned to lecture on two panels during the pre-conference event Nov. 14. The first panel was “International Developments & Opportunities.” Dr. Titus planned to speak alongside Darwin Millard of Plant Consulting Group and Steven Turetsky of Shi Farms. This panel examined the current state of international developments pertaining to hemp. Dr. Titus’ second panel was “Q&A With Hemp Experts.” This interactive experience urged audience members to bring hemp industry experts their questions and concerns about the global future of hemp cultivation. “We are very pleased to, once again, participate in this massive conference that promotes the legality and value of cannabis to all corners of the world,” said Dr. Titus. “The mission of Medical Marijuana Inc. is to actively promote the benefits of incorporating cannabis into everyday consumption. That is exactly what we aim to achieve by participating at this tremendous gathering of cannabis professionals and advocates.”
Joe Vargas, Chief Executive Officer of Cloud N9ne Syrup, and Las Vegas entrepreneur behind the viral sensation “Fake Melania” tweet, is looking to give back after seeing an increase in business. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Vargas is donating toward services for U.S. veterans a percentage of the profits he made from a worldwide explosion on Twitter. Vargas’ Cloud N9ne Syrup and other CBD products are sold on his e-commerce site BuyLegalMeds. com (parent company Space Monkey). “As a veteran myself, I’m all too familiar with the aftereffects of being released from military service and not knowing what to do next, as well as the medical conditions endured while serving,” said Vargas. “I was fortunate to eventually find an industry that I’m extremely passionate about and one that’s doing exceptionally well right now. “It’s an honor for me to be able to give back, and maybe even inspire a fellow veteran to find their ‘next chapter.’ “

Legal cannabis sales on the rise in U.S. Growth driven by marijuana’s numerous medical benefits A new report by Hexa Research valued the United States medical cannabis market at $ 5.44 billion in 2016, with a projected value of $19.48 billion by 2024. The legal cannabis market is expected to be driven by numerous medical benefits of cannabis products, particularly in such fields as oncology, chronic pain and diabetes. Chronic pain was the largest segment, owing to a large number of patients last year. One major obstacle of the legal cannabis market is to raise money. As director of business development for Colorado-based Dynamic Alternative Finance, Scott Jordan works with entrepreneurs in the industry. Jordan explained: “We’re seeing some lenders that are looking for higher yields and returns, venturing into this space.” An article in Forbes reported: “In terms of equity, we also are seeing some of the larger hedge funds and other family offices” getting involved in cannabis finance.
Australia makes strides toward catching up in cannabis market Partnerships engender building projects Despite being behind Canada and the United States on the legal curve of medical and recreational marijuana adoption, Australia is taking big steps toward competing with the leading markets. Several partnerships, including one to build a 1-million-square-foot cannabis-production facility in the country, are helping Australia to play catch up. Cannabis companies experiencing positive momentum from these advances include: MYM Nutraceuticals Inc., Organigram Holdings Inc., CanniMed Therapeutics Inc. and Supreme Pharmaceuticals Inc. It appears that Australia may be the next major nation looking to liberalize how it handles the application of cannabis with serious efforts to bolster its growing industry.

LOCALLY GROWN NEWS
Oregon secretary of state plans to audit marijuana program Cannabis production, finances get first look Oregon’s enforcement of marijuana production and sales will get its first audit from the secretary of state’s office. The audit will offer an official look at how well Oregon regulates its marijuana program, run by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. The audit will look at how the state keeps track of the largely cash-based industry, including the effectiveness of its financial regulations, whether regulators are keeping close tabs on the amount of marijuana produced and whether the state provides timely and appropriate guidance to marijuana businesses. In a letter over the summer to Gov. Kate Brown, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions raised concerns about how effective the state has been in cracking down on the notorious black market for marijuana. Sessions scheduled a Portland visit to talk to law enforcement officials about immigration and other issues. A draft of an Oregon State Police report from earlier this year concluded that the state remains a top cannabis source for the black market in and out of the state. Brown and OSP have distanced themselves from the report, which they’ve said is based on inaccurate information. Source: Oregonlive.com
Oregon man arrested in Nebraska with $1.1 million in cannabis extract Case is first documented of illegal interstate trafficking Richard Wilkinson, an Oregon marijuana processor was arrested in Nebraska on drug trafficking allegations after deputies reported discovering about $1.1 million in cannabis extract in his U-Haul van during a traffic stop. Mark Pettinger, a spokesman for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, said this was the first known case of a licensed Oregon marijuana supplier arrested for allegedly trafficking in another state.

Oregon pays out first pot taxes to schools, cops, other services Law spells out distribution of $85 million The checks are in the mail. That’s the message Oregon Department of Revenue sent Friday when it announced it will pay out $85 million in marijuana taxes for schools, public health, police and local governments by next week. The payouts represent the first distributions of state marijuana tax revenues since Oregon opened its legal recreational cannabis market. Oregon collected a total of $108.6 million in state and local taxes between Jan. 4, 2016, and Aug. 31, 2017. The state put $9.56 million toward the Oregon Liquor Control Commission’s “start-up costs” for regulating the industry and toward the Department of Revenue’s work to collect the taxes. The rest was divvied up according to a formula spelled out by law: The state school fund gets 40 percent, or $34 million; mental health, alcoholism and drug services get 20 percent, or $17 million; Oregon State Police get 15 percent, or $12.75 million; and the Oregon Health Authority gets 5 percent, which comes to $4.25 million. Political-action committee takes aim at cannabis opponents U.S. congressman from Oregon leads the charge
CANNABIS EXECUTIVE DATE NIGHT Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017 3:30 p.m. S.E. 76th Ave., Portland
There’s a new political-action committee dedicated to defeating members of U.S. Congress who cast votes against marijuana, a development that could aid MJ businesses through the passage of pro-cannabis legislation. The new PAC is dubbed the Cannabis Fund, and it was founded by U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, the Statesman Journal reported. The Democrat already has a “first target” in mind, according to the Salem newspaper: Texas Republican Pete Sessions, who helped to erect roadblocks earlier this year when it came time to renew the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer Amendment.

JACK HERER WOOD SMOKING PIPE
Each pipe is handcrafted in Oregon and completely unique. Jack’s autograph is burned into every one, and the finished piece comes packaged in a hemp carrying case. With the double-vortex ricocheting effect, smoke leaves the large Jack Herer pipe at a much lower temperature than a normal pipe. Due to the design of the bowl, and the fact that air circulates below the bowl freely, the burning temperature in the bowl is very high for a complete burn.
Herer demonstrating his pipe at a trade show in San Francisco
WAM magazine’s research for recommending the Jack Herer Wood Smoking Pipe included a conversation with Mark Herer, 52, who still crafts each pipe in his garage in Springfield, Ore. As he prepared to ramp up production for the holidays, Herer took some time to reflect on his famous father’s influence on the marijuana industry and culture, as well as his own lifetime steeped in the weed scene. WAM: As the son of cannabis icon Jack Herer, how have you tried to establish your own role and reputation in the industry? MARK: Well, I think my reputation just kind of happened … For the last 15 seasons, I’ve been growing. You know, the first year that I did it, it was a dream come full-circle … I smartly did it legally. My wife has had three back surgeries, and so I started growing it for her medically. I’ve been growing it medically all the way through. I finally took my Old World medical crop down. The future will be different. I’ve been very blessed to have my gene pool, as it were, and it’s opened a lot of doors for me. Most people don’t know that Dad actually never grew pot … He was never actually a grower. WAM: Earlier this year, you closed the family’s decades-old Third Eye Shoppe, a Southeast Portland landmark. How are you feeling about that aspect of your father’s legacy coming to an end? MARK: Haha … honestly, I was in business with my, technically, five brothers and sisters for the past 18 years, and now I feel free … It was a blessing; it was a curse, but loved it. That store is how I really feel my transition from being a Californian, more specifically Los Angeles … to an Oregonian … and it really kind of forced me to get over myself.
18
DECEMBER 2017
www.weedaficionadomag.com
WAM: Tell us what is was like to come of age steeped in the marijuana scene? MARK: Dad took over the California marijuana initiative in 1980. The first time Dad went petitioning was in 1973 in Santa Barbara, and I was the monkey on his arm. I don’t know if I was a chick magnet for him or something, but that was when I technically started my political career, hanging out with Dad. (It), as you can imagine, has been an eventful life. You know, at some point, Dad really gave his life to saving the world. We sacrificed a lot as his six children, but in retrospect, I wouldn’t change a thing. Many, many amazing adventures … WAM: Given that your father was such an outspoken advocate of cannabis legalization, how do you think he would feel about legal marijuana’s impact on his business and others like it? MARK: In a sense, he would be somewhat disappointed. That being said … All head shops are down; the industry as a whole is down; the Chinese influence and the influx of merchandise and goods is killing us. It’s killing the job market across the board, not just glass but everything. I’d say he’d be pretty disappointed about the shops closing. How he would feel about the movement and where it’s going with recreational pot: I think he’d be happy that now people are not going to prison anymore for smoking weed; it’s accessible. You know, dad was all about the rest of the plant. I would say, in a sentence: There’s much work to be done still. WAM: What plans do you have in the works for another business? MARK: Well, my business partners and I are creating our brand as we speak … I would say sometime in the next six months to a year the world will know about it. WAM: What Oregon strain do you choose or recommend most often? MARK: You know I’ve always been partial to Jack Herer; it would go without saying. Except for the last two seasons, I’ve grown it every year … But I’ve, uh, also been growing Jack Cough; I’ve got about six different Jack crosses right now. This has been a unique year for me, but it was my best Jack and Jack-cross crop year ever. I’m thrilled. WAM: Give us the story behind the Double Barrel Venturi Smoking system, which your dad designed. Why is the pipe still so popular all these years later? MARK: Well, I think it’s so popular because of its limited availability. It’s the only pipe on the market that has two holes in the shank, in the mouthpiece. And if you look down the bowl before a screen is put in it, there’s a ridge that divides the left and the right side, forces the smoke to create a ricocheting vortex effect down both shanks. It naturally allows about four to five times the air flow that just a shank pipe will, and because of it, you don’t need nearly as much smoke in each hit. There’s always fun in research, hahaha! … They’re all handmade out of exotic hardwoods. Yeah, no two pipes are alike.

DISPENSARY
THE CDC DISPENSARY Weed Aficionado asked Walker Davis of The CDC Dispensary in Tigard to explain the business’ success and what’s in store for the cannabis industry. The CDC is at 10015 201 S.W. Hall Blvd., Tigard. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 9:55 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. WAM: Do you service both recreational and medical users? CDC: We are a recreational shop with a medical endorsement. Maintaining our medical roots was extremely important to The CDC Dispensary. None of us would be here without the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program.
component of my workload, purchasing flower, happens to be one of my favorites and is absolutely surreal to me. I’m sure this answer differs from person to person, but not everybody’s job entails buying product. Personally, I thank my higher power every day that I get to participate in this industry.
WAM: With all the changes in the cannabis industry, what’s the biggest impact that recreational sales have had on your business? CDC: We love and value all of our customers and wouldn’t trade them for the world. With that being said, fortunately The CDC has been blessed with more traffic nowadays then the fast-food joint up the street. Volume, volume, volume — that has been the biggest impact.
WAM: What’s new for your business in 2018? CDC: I don’t want to spoil anything, but let’s just say that we are expecting to have a little more room to grow in 2018. Also, very exciting news: The CDC is licensed for delivery. We intend on using that license in 2018.
WAM: What is the biggest draw to your location? CDC: I hear a ton of talk about two things: our low, low prices and the staff. A shout-out to our team’s unrelenting customer service and knowledge to the point of embodying a “weed sommelier” — truly cannabis professionals. WAM: What is the reason behind your business’ success? CDC: In short, respect, helpfulness and humility are key at The CDC Dispensary. That mantra that has been contagious from the start, qualities derived straight from owner Judith LaParne’s being. Fortunately, this idea has transcended into each member of our team, even to customers and vendors. For example, if we don’t have a certain requested product, our staff will check menus of nearby shops and even call to find that product for a customer. It may not seem ideal for the average capitalist, but The CDC is not an average dispensary. Those qualities, combined with our best foot forward, have definitely blessed us with some success in this industry. However, this is a feat impossible without our employees, patrons and vendors. WAM: What inspired your passion for this industry? CDC: Well, who doesn’t enjoy cannabis? On a deeper note, our passion is helping people. We started as a medical shop because we wanted to help patients. Fortunately, now The CDC is able to help even more people. Anything that comes with that is just a bonus. WAM: What is your favorite part of the job? CDC: Hmmmmm. Where to begin? Interacting with customers and vendors is so fulfilling. It is no overstatement when we say The CDC is proud to serve. Not to mention the biggest

WAM: What do think customers will demand more of in the future? CDC: Flower is a proverbial “classic” for a reason. However, I do see concentrates, specifically cartridges, gaining tremendous popularity. But don’t tell the processors that! WAM: What are the biggest challenges that cannabis business owners face in the industry? CDC: Banking, plain and simple. WAM: As the cannabis industry grows and improves, what developments are you most looking forward to in the future? CDC: Within the scope of reach? Again, banking. It would be so nice to see a more accessible means of banking. That is an obvious means to cut down on risky amounts of cash on hand and to actually utilize money that, in some cases, is just taking up space. Interstate trade makes me overflow with excitement but, like I said, within the scope of reach.
RESPECT, HELPFULNESS AND HUMILITY ARE KEY AT THE CDC DISPENSARY.

THE ATING BY LEAF BARRET
NUMBERS DON’T EXPECT A BETTER HIGH FROM HIGHER-PERCENTAGE FLOWERS
WARNING! This article may save you money and bring you peace of mind. Please read at your own risk. Why, suddenly, do percentages of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) matter? In the past year or so, you may have noticed your local budtender pushing you toward higher-THC products with higher price tags. Why, you may ask? Most patients (consumers) have been asking why, over the past six months, dispensaries have changed from a “go-to” cannabis strain that was 14 percent last year to a different strain — higher in THC — that doesn’t seem to work for the ailment specified. There are several reasons, and you won’t like the main one: MONEY! There are 500-plus cannabis retailers in Oregon, where the number of new farms has exponentially increased. From line to line, they all carry very similar flowers: indoor and outdoor strains ranging from 9 percent THC all the way to 34 percent! With so many new farms, Oregon faces price wars on the wholesale side, plummeting prices on all flower and lower-THC flower being passed over by stores. In 2016, average THC percentages of Oregon cannabis were around 16 to 18 percent. So why has the potency doubled in some of these same strains? Simple. The method of testing is skewed across the board! We found that one company may turn your flower back in at 20 percent, and the same flower tested from another agency may come back at 13 percent. How is this possible? The factors behind this discrepancy could be a book unto itself, so we’ll give you the simple version in one word: moisture. If a farm turns their current strain in for testing with a 15-percent moisture count, their tests are expected to come back with some degree of THC accuracy, but if that same flower sits around for a week before getting tested, there is no telling what may take place. The moisture level may drop amid poor storage conditions, or it may increase for that same reason. The process for testing is the same for any amount of THC, and the processors know that. So why are so many flowers testing at different levels? The answer, unfortunately, is the same: MONEY! We hear from farms that their testing facilities call to report their flowers tested at 17 percent … but then, if they want, they can redo those tests and get better results! That’s just wrong!

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN? Consumers now must help to reeducate their budtenders on what strains have worked best. For new clients, don’t be sold on higher THC and higher prices. Let your nose be the deciding factor when picking your next strain. Truth be told, customers who feel “lost” among so many choices should rely on their preferences for weeding out strains, rather than selecting ones so high in THC that they get too stoned. On the flip side, if you’re just looking to get “stoned,” these same practices apply. We promise that a 10-percent-THC strain picked according to your pleasure sensors can get you just as high as a 20-percent strain that cost twice as much. How Weed Aficionados pick their flowers:
HOW CAN ENTERPRISES
Step 1. Greet your budtender by introducing yourself. Step 2. Explain why you’re there and what type of flower you’d like: i.e., indica, sativa. Step 3. Ask to smell all the types of flower you prefer by dominance. Step 4. Select the strain that your NOSE picks, and you’ll be happy. Step 5. Tip your budtender and say: “Thank you for all your help; have a nice day.”
REGULATED LESS
We could go on for pages about cannabis testing, which is still a relatively new concept. But the one thing we can say is there are no Oregon Liquor Control Commission standards for testing facilities, so how can enterprises regulated less strictly than farms provide accurate testing results? That disparity makes us wonder if ANY flower on the Oregon market is, in fact, accurate.

HIGH GROUND By Andrew Mount
Ebb & Flow models conscious cultivation
Lisa Denney strolls through the cannabis crop at her Ebb & Flow farm near Ashland, where she and partner Amy Parscal terrace plants in native clay soil amended only with biochar, minerals and worm castings.
a cannabis landscape increasingly dominated by commercial priorities, one strain of business ethos elevates environmental and social responsibility. Nestled among the sprawling pear orchards of the Bear Creek watershed, Ebb & Flow is one of several farms located on a single, modest Ashland site regulated by the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission. Co-founders Amy Parscal and Lisa Denney are partners both in business and in life. Together, they holistically manage multiple canopies of medicine while also pioneering a balanced approach to hemp farming in the West. Formerly residents of the Bay Area practicing urban permaculture and exploring whole-systems solutions, Denney and Parscal eventually sought to live sustainably in the wilds of California’s Shasta-Trinity area. They had superior cannabis growing conditions, solar and water storage, yet the local laws were changed to prohibit outdoor cultivation. Thus, the frontier of Oregon shone brightly on the horizon, home since 2015 to Ebb & Flow. To pursue their vision of a true wilderness homestead, the duo purchased WILDESS, a 160-acre, off-grid property in the Sampson Creek watershed, 45 minutes by vehicle from Ashland. In 2017, modest hemp cultivation began on this remote piece of mountain land, using minimal resources and labor to achieve a manageable yield. All 650 hemp (CBD) plants are terraced in native clay soil amended with only biochar (converted from slash piles), minerals and worm castings. Irrigation is entirely powered by gravity from spring-fed holding tanks.
To satisfy growing interest in CBD-rich strains, Ebb & Flow added these medically essential varieties to their award-winning inventory for greatest health benefit. “Working with plants requires that we are in spiritual and energetic balance,” says Denney. “Sensitivity is needed.” Denney’s background in holistic health education serves as a guiding force in their ongoing work. She cured her own chronic migraines with cannabis. Self-funded, mission-driven and spiritually informed, Ebb & Flow distributes to prominent dispensaries in both Portland and Southern Oregon. Their delectable Quantum Kush No. 5 recently was featured as strain of the month in one cannabis-industry publication. Cannabis, in fact, is the No. 1 industry for women-owned businesses, a fact that encourages Denney’s and Parscal’s continued momentum. Ebb & Flow is a member of the Craft Cannabis Alliance that brings together local farmers devoted to ethically grown medicine crops. The membership association emphasizes the importance of regenerative agriculture and remineralization as a dual means to improve the health of ecosystems and communities as a whole. Even among fellow industry players, Ebb & Flow takes a deeply respectful and radically timely stance on biology and land use. Focusing on low-cost, locally sourced, organic inputs and enriching soil with biochar is a core philosophy. Integrated pest management and biologically rich extract teas (applied as both foliar and drench) promote superior plant resistance. Yet the pervasive pest problems in the Rogue Valley amid expanding monoculture are impossible to ignore. Hence, WILDESS, a reference to the great mother goddess, is a learning environment, as well as a working example of forestland stewardship. “We are interacting with the forest in unsustainable ways,” says Parscal. “We have to let old growth come back, not just let the forests burn. We need to transition away from wood use, and yet we are not in a place where we can stop using the benefits of the forest. Living in the forest, you see things in a totally different way. How we manage the forest in the face of weather changes is really important.” The practical elements of such a plan could be rolled into one now contemporary term: carbon farming. Ladder fuels are reduced and turned into biochar, then returned to the soil; even fence posts are made from these same resources. Surplus wood chips are returned to the forest floor to ensure continued fertility of the micro biota and retention of the soil’s moisture. Sustainably logging to create “hügelkultur” beds preserves pioneer plants in the underbrush and leaves larger trees to mature. The soil-to-oil CBD farm at WILDESS practices no feeding, no trellising and no topping. Their homemade biochar is crucial in this experimental approach to a scalable, regenerative farming model based within a forest resource environment. Every manager at Ebb & Flow is trained in permaculture, and all are striving to apply these models to the business arena. Some of these principles are: seasonality, “the sacred spiral of life” and “as above, so below.” “Regenerative farming is about mimicking the natural environment in the forest and prairie,” explains Parscal. “Using these principles, we have the potential to restore the ecological balance of abused farmland. We can farm in the valley in polycultures and improve the ecosystems utilizing regenerative practices.” One of Ebb & Flow’s core team members, Eviane Ita, candidly asserts, “With the way the industry is changing, my advice to anyone who wants to stay alive is they should diversify. Become invaluable!” Value-added product development is part of the company’s strategy, with both their pre-rolls and future cartridges formulated not only by potency, but also by terpene profile and selection of the

most fragrant cultivars. Further diversification soon will include educational materials with each product and a full description of their “craft” status, linking Ebb & Flow to local cash flows and family farms. Denney and Parscal contemplate hosting a regional conference to facilitate intra-industry dialogue around breeding genetics and regenerative farming practices. “We are looking for more simplicity,” confesses Parscal. “And we aspire to address the triad of medicine, fuel and fiber that cannabis can provide our communities here in Oregon.” She summarizes their diverse Oregon growing experiences in this way: “Farming in the valley — the pressures of keeping up with the fast-paced growth of the industry and regulatory burdens, along with the intense pest pressure from an out-of-balance ecosystem — this has shown us the challenges that we face. Growing in a forest teaming with fertility, beneficial insects and flora and fauna has shown us what is possible.”

CANNA-NOG INGREDIENTS: • 5 eggs, separated • ½ cup, plus 2 tablespoons sugar, divided • 2 cups whole milk • 1 ½ cups heavy cream • 2 to 4 tablespoons salted cannabis butter, melted • 1 tablespoon vanilla • Freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish • Kief, for garnish DIRECTIONS: 1 | Using an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks until they are light. In a steady stream, add the ½ cup sugar. When sugar is dissolved, add the milk, cream, melted cannabis butter and vanilla; beat until combined. 2 | In a separate, clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites on high speed until soft peaks form. Add remaining 2 tablespoons sugar and beat until stiff. 3 | Fold egg whites into cannabis mixture and chill. Garnish with the nutmeg and kief.
WEED WHISKEY INGREDIENTS: • 750-milliliter bottle Bulleit Rye Whiskey • ¼ ounce ground weed DIRECTIONS: 1 | Pour the bottle of Bulleit into a sealable jar, or pour a little bit of whiskey from bottle to accommodate weed’s volume. To jar or bottle, add the ground weed. 2 | Shake bottle and let it sit, out of sunlight, for at least 48 hours. Shake it at least once per day until it has reached desired potency — up to 1 month, if possible. Columnist overcomes decades of paranoia blues I’M SEEING THE GHOST of my high school dean chasing us across the junior parking lot. We’ve just arrived back on campus after lunch, a little late for fifth period. We’re blazed, but not confused: Get out of the car quickly! DO NOT let the vehicle smoke escape! But the skunk is out of the bag. Dean Blakeney gets a whiff and screams: “Stop right there, you punks!” We escaped that time, and the time after that and probably the time after that, before Dean B could slime us with suspension and/or a call to our parents (mine would have just asked if I was ripping off their stash again). Fact: I can count on one finger the times I got caught getting high. But somehow that didn’t stop the paranoia that accompanied me on pretty much every toke-out, especially if I was stoned while out in public. Decades removed from high school, and still getting high (although not nearly as much), that paranoia hasn’t gone away. My mind is still in “teen rebel,” sneaky phase, back in the junior parking lot trying not to get nabbed. But times have changed. Marijuana is going legit, way more acceptable than it was back in the day (unless you believe our asshole attorney general). And I’m no longer a teenager; I’m a responsible adult (wink, wink). So why can’t I just leave the Paranoia Blues behind and enjoy the ride? Because … Neurons that fire together wire together. That is to say: The more time you spend dwelling on something, the harder it is to let go, which creates an endless, largely negative, feedback loop that hinders our ability to chill the fuck out, enjoy our lives and, in this case, our time being stoned. Is it possible to tweak the neurons so they’re not backseat driving every single trip? It’s called neuroplasticity. And I am here to report, it IS possible! First, the bad news. Scientists believe our brains have a built-in negativity bias that evolved over millions of years. They talk about it in terms of “carrots” or “sticks.” If we miss out on a carrot, there will probably be another one available to us soon enough. If we get struck by a stick — or, let’s say, a spear — no chance to get that carrot, ever. So even though chances of getting skewered by the local Homo Heidelbergensis spear (invented 500,000 years ago) largely has been minimized, our brains still are rooted in survival mode. Now, the good news. Neuroplasticity suggests that the brain has the ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural
connections. How? You need to feed your brain new and positive information. Start with: Just the facts, ma’am I got caught smoking one time by a cop. I was let go after a slight slap on the wrist. As far as I can remember, no one has ever harshed-out on me for being stoned. (Hint: I’m not married.) Enjoy the experience Take the time to smell the weed! Reinforce how good it feels to be stoned. Sure, you might forget that sensation right after the next hit, but reinforce it again! Every time you reinforce the positive in your life, a little of the negativity slips away. Practice this in every facet of your life! Find your inner Buddha! Om. I’m seeing the ghost of my high school dean. He’s sitting in a wheelchair in a convalescent home with a big smile on his face. They’ve just dosed him with his morning edibles. Rick Cipes has written for over 40 publications including L.A. Times, Playboy and ESPN Magazine. Strain really does matter
Scientific studies point to specific remedies for each condition
IF YOU USE CANNABIS, or are even thinking about using cannabis, learning about strains is crucial. All too often, marijuana is discussed as if it is one medicine with uniform health benefits, which simply isn’t the case. As a cannabis educator, I often hear people say, “I tried marijuana once, but it didn’t work for me,” or “I used to like cannabis, but then it started making me anxious all the time.” My immediate question always is: “What strain were you using?” Usually, the answer is a shrug. It’s the unfortunate person who gives up on a medicine that could help without realizing the strain may have been to blame. STRAIN AFFECTS EXPERIENCE Cannabis is a plant of extreme variety. There are countless strains out there, and the various effects are as numerous. Depending on what strain you are using, you might get very different results. Some strains might relax you while other make you anxious. Some might make you sleepy while others energize. Some elevate; others might make you depressed. It is crucial to know which strains you are using so you can find out what does and doesn’t work for you. I personally can utilize only 5 to 10 percent of the strains available on the market for my medical needs. When I first started using cannabis, it was quite a journey to find the right options. I thought my sensitivities must be rare, but patient surveys show that 86 percent of cannabis users have strong preferences for particular cannabis strains and observe differences in how each strain affects them. In fact, the majority of patients use only one to three cannabis products regularly. STRAIN AFFECTS EFFICACY Strain also plays a role in how effective cannabis is for treating different diseases or symptoms. Researchers have noted that, for certain conditions, specific cannabis strains made all the difference in success rates associated with treatment. In Israel, geneticist and molecular biologist

David Meiri is studying 50 varieties of cannabis and its effects on 200 different cancer cells. He attests that while cannabis can help with some cancers, it might not work the same for all. Certain cancers respond better to certain cannabinoids. While some strain combinations might be successful on specific cancer types, not all are. Researchers also have noted differences related to strain when treating other conditions. Epilepsy patients often cite benefit from strains high in CBD, according to an article in Scientific American. Whether a strain was an indica or sativa mattered when treating insomnia, the National Institutes of Health reported. And highCBD strains can help with schizophrenia while strains high in THC might worsen it, another study showed. FIND YOUR STRAINS Thankfully, researchers and the cannabis industry alike are starting to pay more attention to strain. Most dispensaries offer an array of strain-specific products; it’s up to you to find the ones that work best for your needs. Investigate strains that work well for your conditions. Check out Leafly.com or CannaSOS.com. Both sites let patients search strain reviews by condition or symptom, this allows you to see what worked well for others in your situation. Try a wide variety of strain types until you find ones you like. Record which strains helped and which strains produced negative results. Pay attention to strain when picking out your medicine. Any of these moves can help decrease the time you spend looking for a cannabis solution. While more than half of patients say they found a product that helped in less than a month, more than a quarter of them spent longer than six months searching. By focusing a little time on promising strains, you can identify options that will work best for you. Strain really does matter. Columnist and other ‘cannamoms’ take pride in ‘meducation’ EVERY MOM finds a way to manage stress, to unwind
after a long day of managing everyone else’s problems but our own. We need quiet time and peaceful moments when nobody needs us. Some moms read a book, some moms take a bath, some drink wine or meditate and others grind up our bud, grab some papers, sneak into the garage or out to the backyard when the kids are sleeping, and spark up a joint. Now, more than ever, moms are learning about and feeling more comfortable by winding down with some THC and CBD! When I found out I was almost seven weeks pregnant with my daughter, one of my first thoughts was to stop smoking weed. I was told it could cause problems for my child, just like drinking would, so I stopped. I wasn’t that worried about not smoking; I was willing to make a small change in my life. Then I realized that my life practically depended on having cannabis. Morning sickness was more like all-day and all-night sickness. I lost 20 pounds in one month and passed out multiple mornings trying to go to work. My daughter was eating me alive, and eating food was impossible. I threw up as soon as I woke up, as soon as I tried to eat breakfast and throughout the day and night. I stepped down from my managerial position at a local resort and didn’t know what to do. My mother and my doctors were very concerned and implored me to eat. My solution: smoke some herb. After two full months of starving and barfing my brains out, I got some herb, packed a bowl, sat in my car and drew a small hit. I was concerned that I may be making an unsafe choice but then rationalized my problem. I needed to eat, or my baby was going to die; I needed to eat, or I might die, too. Less than 10 minutes later, I decided to go inside and eat some cereal. That was the first meal I had, and within a few hours I finally ate a full meal without sacrificing it to the porcelain god. I realized I needed to medicate by microdosing throughout my pregnancy for pain, sleep, digestion and overall mood. I still was concerned, so I did my research and notified my doctor that I was doing better and working again. She couldn’t tell me: “Atta girl! Smoke as much as you want!” But she agreed I was doing 100 percent better. Isabella was born four days late, 21 inches long and

hairy as hell. She was healthy and perfect in every way. She is now almost 6, going on 30. She is extremely smart and a force to be reckoned with. So when do we, as parents, choose to discuss using cannabis for our medicine? Now. Today. Education is important. We have a responsibility as parents to lead our children to the right path and explain to them why we use cannabis rather than taking prescription drugs. They should be aware of the side effects, what it looks like, smells like and all the forms in which it can be taken. There is nothing worse than your kids not knowing what edibles look like and getting into them, or sharing them with their friends. My kids know that none of mommy’s medicine can be touched; they know what it looks like and understand that it is not for them at all. They have no problem obeying that rule because they know cannabis can make them sick. Keeping cannabis locked and hidden away is not paranoid behavior; it’s to safeguard our little ones who don’t understand dosing amounts or how cannabis can affect them. I consider my kids “meducated.” My parents more than understand and ask about CBDs and cannabis lotions. My father eats my cannabis treats often and smokes a jay with me here and there. I love being a cannamom. I am thankful to live in Colorado where I can be open and more comfortable with my cannabis use, unlike in other states where some moms could lose their children if they adopted my position. I hope that soon, those moms won’t need to resort to pharmaceuticals to relieve stress or anxiety. Don’t feel guilty or embarrassed for using cannabis. Discretion for many is important, but it’s OK if you have to sneak into the garage and take a hit to stave off being a bitch. When other parents say: “Gosh you’re so happy and glowing!” I think: “Yes, I am happy. I love my life, and I smoke a ton of weed!” #cannamom QeenBee writes about the modern cannabis-centered lifestyle, as well as political viewpoints on cannabis’ future.
