How would you describe Vietnam? Incredible and diverse; whether you want a relaxing beach holiday or a cultural break, Vietnam is an exciting choice for the inquisitive mind. What shouldn’t visitors miss in Vietnam? The Mai Chau eco-lodge, it’s set in a valley and is built entirely from natural materials. Here, you can interact with local people and learn about their culture. What is your favourite Vietnamese food? Elephant fish was very tasty.
What did you enjoy most in India? I loved watching the day-to-day local life. There is always so much going on, you don’t know where to look next. What fascinates you about India? Definitely the history. As you walk through the forts and palaces of Rajasthan you feel as though you are transported back in time. What would you recommend to anyone travelling to India for the first time? Go with an open mind and be prepared that you will probably want to return.
What’s your favourite thing about Costa Rica? The adrenaline activities – I was initially very nervous about the zip lining, horse riding and river tubing, however I loved it all. Do you have to be a nature-lover to enjoy Costa Rica? Not at all, there are coffee tours, chocolate tours and many art galleries in Monteverde, so lots of variety. What top tip would you give to someone visiting Costa Rica? Stay at least two nights in San Jose as this is a very interesting place.
What’s the appeal of South Africa for you? Its fascinating yet tragic past holds a big attraction for me. It’s great to see the country as it develops year after year. What would you recommend not to miss in South Africa? Enjoy a leisurely day exploring the Cape Winelands, visiting the vineyards and sampling the finest wines they have to offer. What has been your highlight of any trip here? Spotting the Big Five on both a game drive and guided walk.

What surprised you most about Costa Rica? The diversity! From Tortuguero on the Caribbean Coast with private lodges beside the river, to the Monteverde Cloud Forest with hanging bridges, perfect for spotting wildlife. What did you enjoy most? Horse riding, river tubing down river gorges and zip lining through the treetops! What will you remember the most? Spotting white-faced monkeys in the rainforest and suddenly coming out at a gorgeous beach in Manuel Antonio.
Where in South Africa would you recommend to go? The game reserves in the Eastern Cape or the Madikwe offer a great and unique safari experience. Any advice for first time visitors to South Africa? You will want to visit more than once. Even if you went for three weeks you would only really be scratching the surface of this amazing country. Where is your favourite place here? The Drakensberg Mountain Range. This is a wonderful place for people who love the outdoors.
What was your first impression of India? I was overwhelmed by the generosity of the people here, as well as the bright colours and the liveliness of the streets. What experience stands out in your mind? Although probably an obvious choice, for me it was definitely watching the sun rise over the Taj Mahal. This is something that will stay with me forever. Did you enjoy the food? I had not expected to, but I loved it – so fresh and flavoursome, with a lot of variety!
What’s your favourite thing about Vietnam? Many things – the friendly people, your money goes a long way and there is so much culture, heritage and history, not forgetting the stunning beaches, hot climate and delicious food! What’s your favourite place there? Tam Coc near Ninh Binh – the scenery here is incredible. Which local delicacy have you enjoyed the most? Alligator in Phan Thiet! Although it didn’t look appetising, I decided to try it and it was delicious.

Tiny Costa Rica packs a big punch. It’s bursting with natural wonders, an abundance of adventure and is the ecotourism capital of the world – so where better to get off the beaten track?
S
andwiched between Nicaragua and Panama, and flanked by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica exudes the spirit of adventure. Adrenaline junkies can zipline above rainforests filled with chattering primates, clamber up volatile volcanoes and spot riverside critters from a raft – to name just a few of the escapades on offer. “Whatever a customer’s needs – whether it’s adventure, a spot of relaxing or a bit of both – our experts are so knowledgable, and our trips flexible enough that we can plan their trip with ease,” explains Hayes and Jarvis Travel Designer Vanessa Linley.

A visit to Arenal volcano, one of the most active craters on the planet, is an essential on any itinerary. This unpredictable peak has a habit of erupting every three or four years, which should be enough to get any heart racing. To raise your pulse a little further, take to the rivers nearby: Costa Rica provides some truly blood-pumping whitewater rafting experiences and the fizzing waters around Arenal – the Peñas Blancas, Balsa and Toro – are no exception. You can pick a thrill level to satisfy your appetite for adventure. Next up, take a walk on the wild side at Selvatura Park, deep within the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Its network of treetop walkways,
platforms and hanging bridges, which extends over two kilometres through the forest, enables you to safely spot the wildlife that abounds in the jungle below and the canopy above. Keep an eye out for Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth, kinkajou and over 30 species of hummingbird. If it’s birds that set you aflutter, head for the Tirimbina Reserve. It is home to 300 species of avifauna – including white-necked puffbirds, sunbitterns and the rare snowy contingas – making this rainforest a birdwatching nirvana. The highs of the cloud forest are matched by the dazzling depths off the Costa Rican coasts, and getting underwater here is essential – not least because of the vast numbers of sea turtles

Bet you didn’t know Costa Rica is great for relaxation too. When you’re tired out from all that adventureseeking, head for the Tabacón Hot Springs, near the Arenal Volcano, for a spa experience courtesy of Mother Nature herself. Mineralrich waters and flowing waterfalls, set amid lush tropical foliage, create these natural hot springs. There’s a surprise next door too, in the form of the ‘Grand Spa’ – perfect if you fancy volcanic mud wraps, meditation trails and coconut and coffee exfoliations.
that pay a visit. Head for the Ostional Wildlife Refuge on the Nicoya Peninsula up in the north-west. The sanctuary offers a safe nesting site for olive ridley, leatherback and green turtles. They nest throughout the year here, so the chances of spotting females as they come ashore to lay their eggs in the black, volcanic sands are high. Alternatively, our Costa Rica
experts would suggest a visit to Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast. Accessible only by plane or boat, it’s one of the world’s key sea turtle nesting beaches. Then there’s Corcovado National Park, often described as the most biologically intense place on earth. Here you can spot all four types of monkey that live in Costa Rica – howler, squirrel, spider, white-faced capuchin – as well as crocodiles, jaguars, giant anteaters, Baird’s tapir, scarlet macaws and toucans, to name just a few. With its natural rock formations, waterfalls, beaches and rivers, Corcovado is adventurous Costa Rica in microcosm: as beautiful as it is wild and diverse.

Intoxicating India India is vast, culture-rich and brimming with treasures. And there are few better ways to discover it than on a private tour
I
f you’re looking for that trip of a lifetime, look no further than India. A vast and vibrant country, with tantalising cuisine aplenty, India offers an overwhelming number of things to see and do. From bustling cities to exotic jungles, snow-capped mountains and misty plantations, it is an incredibly diverse natural and cultural feast. But where do you begin? Delhi is a great, and easily accessible, starting point for your Hayes and Jarvis trip. Here, two cities collide: the grand, imperious architecture of New Delhi, the beating heart of modern India, is contrasted with the chaotic allure of Old Delhi, a pulsating labyrinth of people, rushing rickshaws, wandering cows and even the odd elephant. Don’t miss the chance to sample the traditional Mughlai dishes of Old Delhi, from tandoori chicken to seekh
Bet you didn’t know Bollywood is the bright, brash film industry of India – but few realise that Hollywood is a regular visitor to this majestic region too. Some of the most famous movie spots include: Udaipur, used in James Bond’s Octopussy; Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort featured in the blockbusting Dark Knight Rises; and the 2011 sleeper smash hit, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, was shot entirely in Jaipur.

kebabs. And visit the crimson-sandstone splendour of the Red Fort – once the residence of India’s Mughal emperors, the stronghold now houses a number of museums; enter through the Lahore Gate, a powerful symbol of the nation’s identity. Delhi, and the cities of Agra and Jaipur, combine to form India’s Golden Triangle, so named for the wealth of cultural and historic sites encompassed by the three spots. While Delhi is big and brash, Jaipur is all about busy bazaars and spectacular shrines, and Agra is home to the captivating Taj Mahal. Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is a regal city swimming in elegant architecture and exciting street-life. It’s called the Pink City, on account of its rose-hued buildings, but the colours here are myriad – from ladies in rainbow saris to flower-filled market stalls and the magnificent Amber Fort, which perches like a sandcastle above the city. Immerse yourself in the history surrounding you here: walk up to the fort, explore the colossal City Palace and marvel at the exquisite facade of the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). Agra is a lively town, with an impressive fort, but of course most people visit for the peerless Taj. Towering over the Jamuna River, this marvel-in-marble was recently voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; its reflective pools and jewel-encrusted arches are Indian architecture at its best. For something completely different, our experts at Hayes and Jarvis suggest escaping the buzz of the big cities with a detour down south to the Kerala Backwaters. Amid this confection of lush jungle, tropical waterways and rural landscapes you can get in touch with traditional Indian customs, by visiting local villages, temples, markets and paddy fields. If this all sounds overwhelming, it is – but that’s the joy of India. This huge country calls for more than one visit – and its distinct, varied culture will keep enticing you back for more.

here’s no feeling quite like getting behind the wheel in a foreign country, with nothing but a road map, some snacks and a thirst for adventure. And with its good open roads and spectacular scenery, South Africa is one place that’s best discovered on a leisurely, tailormade self-drive. The Garden Route is a dream drive – behind the wheel on a bespoke Hayes and Jarvis trip, you’ll be seduced by this stretch of Western Cape coastline with its distinctive topography, fairytale forests and pounding seas. The distances aren’t that great, but the key is to go slow and relax into the pretty towns, wild reserves and white-sand beaches along the way.
Begin your journey by partaking in a meet-and-greet with the Big Five: leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant and rhino. Amid the pristine parklands of the Shamwari Game Reserve you can see them all – a great introduction to the Garden Route. For an extreme animal close-up, head for Knysna Elephant Park, which offers a rare and exciting opportunity to help feed these magnificent mammals, and learn about the vast herds that once roamed here. Want more wildlife? Head for Oudtshoorn, home to more than 400 ostrich farms, such as Highgate Ostrich Show Farm. This partdesert, part-cape landscape is all about close encounters with the world’s biggest bird, as
well as white Bengal tigers and Nile crocs. For even more avifauna, try the Birds of Eden Aviary, where you can make more than 3,500 feathered friends. Swap feathers for fins, in the town of Hermanus, on the edge of Walker Bay – deemed one of the best whale-watching spots in the world. From June to December, keep a look out from the clifftops for the numerous southern right whales that swim within metres of the shore. These endangered cetaceans are known for their mournful songs and playful nature, and you can watch them breaching, spouting and lob-tailing without even having to leave dry land.

discover... South Africa The Garden Route isn’t all about wildlife, however; check out the towns en route too. Stop off at Mossel Bay, a picturesque seaside settlement with a mild climate, overlooking a sparkling azure bay that’s famed for its mussels and oysters. If it’s beaches you’re after, try Plettenberg Bay, which boasts miles of golden sands and surf breaks. Our South Africa experts also recommend the Tsitsikamma Forest, an enchanting fairyland of giant trees, dramatic mountains and charming valleys. This is hikers’ heaven, offering everything from casual day strolls to overnight treks. Try the five-day Otter Trail, which tests your abilities over coastal cliffs, lush hills, deep rivers and lofty mountains.
The beauty of self-driving in South Africa is that whatever your interest – whether it’s wildlife, landscapes or adventure – you can tailormake your own itinerary to your own tastes and then take to the open road…

Whales, dolphins and seals are also regularly spotted.

ietnam: effervescent and energetic, heart-achingly beautiful, brim-full of culture, a-sizzle with mouthwatering food. Unsurprisingly, this Asian gem tops the wishlist of many travellers. Key to the appeal is its diversity – Vietnam stretches from the cool, hilltribe-dotted northern highlands to the tropical Mekong Delta, with innumerable beaches and historic hotspots in between. A good place to start your journey is amid the stalls and malls of Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, HCMC is the economic

It’s a sensory feast too: Saigon street food at its best. Bask in the heady aromas of pho, banh xeo and Vietnamese coffee, to name a few. To experience a rewarding – if sobering – dose of history, our experts at Hayes and Jarvis recommend the Cu Chi Tunnels, a submerged cave network, 40km north-west of HCMC, used by Viet Cong guerillas during the Vietnam
War. Visitors can crawl through the safer parts of the tunnel system, gaining a rewarding insight into the tenacity of these warriors. Heading northwards, you reach pictureperfect Hoi An. Once a fishing village, it’s now a vibrant hub, infused with Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese influences; don’t miss the 16thcentury Japanese Bridge. Also, venture a little out from the centre to visit a local silk village to glimpse the traditional handicraft that provides a lifeline for the town’s riverside communities. From Hanoi, Halong Bay is a short jump away. This UNESCO-listed
Vietnam is not without its luxuries: The Fusion Maia Resort in Danang offers an incredible experience. It’s set on a gorgeous stretch of beach and all spa treatments are included in the price, so it’s a great place to relax after exploring the country.
