The magazine

The photo competition

Thanks

Wanderlust was launched in 1993 by Paul Morrison and Lyn Hughes. It has since become the UK’s leading travel magazine for authentic, adventurous and sustainable travel, thanks to its focus on local cultures, wildlife and nature, and its hallmark mix of inspirational writing and impartial information.

The competition is launched in July each year and is open for entries until November. The panel of judges draws up a shortlist of entries, which are displayed at Destinations – the UK’s leading travel and holiday show, usually held in early February. It is here that the winners are announced.

The Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year competition would never have become the success that it is today without the support of a number of individuals and organisations.

Top-class photography has been a feature of the magazine from the start, aiming to show the world as it is, rather than how we might like it to be.

The category winners are dispatched on a photographic commission for Wanderlust; recent hosts have included Western Australia and Thailand. This volume contains winning and shortlisted images from the past two years of the competition. As well as the judges’ category winners, we also highlight the Destinations show winners – voted for by visitors to Wanderlust’s annual Travel Photo of the Year exhibition at the event. For details on entering, check out www.travelphotooftheyear.co.uk or buy a copy of Wanderlust from July onwards.

Destinations: The Holiday & Travel Show has provided the ideal venue for an exhibition of the finalists’ photos, and the nerve-wracking awards ceremony, every year. Thanks to the ‘Desties’ team. Our thanks go to our media partner, The Independent, particularly Simon Calder and Sophie Lam, for encouragement and support. We are also very grateful to our various sponsors over the past two years, including Western Australia and Nikon, who have provided such excellent prizes for the competition winners. We cannot forget, of course, the team of judges – including Paul Harris, Paul Goldstein and Keith Wilson – and helpers who have had the unenviable task of picking the winners. Lastly, thanks to everyone who sifted through their travel shots and entered their best ones into the competition. To those who made it into this book: congratulations. To those who didn’t: we hope you’ll be inspired to try again next year.

Lioness’ playtime Masai Mara, Kenya We came across a pride of lions and witnessed these young lionesses playing with a leopard tortoise. They treated it as a pet toy, each taking a turn to play with the tortoise – cuddling it, competing for it and biting it. I watched carefully as playtime continued and wanted to capture the scene and, in particular, the playfulness and interactive behaviour between competing lionesses. It’s just a shower Masai Mara, Kenya The storm was over in a matter of minutes and the small herd of zebra was huddling together in the torrential rain. They gradually moved closer together and were only in line for a couple of seconds. A slow shutter speed captured the force of the rain. Eye contact Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa Initially I was hoping to take pictures of a cheetah mum chasing a springbok, but the chase happened so fast and was hidden behind shrubs, so a good photo opportunity didn’t arise. Only after that did I notice two little cheetah cubs in the bushes. One of them was curiously looking at me in my car when this image was taken. Illuminate the Dead Sea Dead Sea, Israel This night landscape – incorporating the distinctive colour and salt crystals of the Dead Sea – was captured in October 2014. I told my friend I would very much like to catch the lightning in the Dead Sea and, a second after I finished the sentence, lightning sparked right in front of our faces! We realised that, tonight, we were going to shoot lightning bolts... Daniel Winter, Director of sales Nikon D7100, Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 lens @ 15mm, 71 sec @ f/5, ISO 200

Too much practice Bali, Indonesia This was taken in Bali during Melasti Festival. This festival is conducted once a year in conjunction with the Nyepi (or Silent) Day. These young girls were waiting for their turn to perform. They looked stunning with their brightly coloured costumes and heavy make-up on, however each of the girls’ expressions – especially the yawning girl – gives this image an extra ‘ummpph’. Amsterdam light trails Amsterdam, The Netherlands I used a long exposure – 30 seconds – to capture the boat, bike and car trails over the iconic bridges and canals of Amsterdam, after scouting this location first. I’d noticed the boat traffic and decided to use the light trails as a leading line into the image, watching for the boats coming from behind me and timing my shots to capture their light trails as they passed under me. As the light was fading fast I had little scope to experiment, so I used an ND Grad filter to hold back the sunset in order to create a long enough exposure to let the boat pass fully through the frame.
