01 TOM TOM MAGAZINE HEADQUATERS

CONCEPT STATEMENT

HISTORY

Tom Tom Magazine is a multimedia organization that intends to raise awareness about female percussionists from all over the world and hope to inspire women and girls of all ages to drum, all while strengthening and building the community of otherwise fragmented female musicians. Located in the multicultural Brooklyn, the new Tom Tom Magazine headquarter, which combines offices, retail, performance venue and bar, will be an excellent place for female drummers and music fans to communicate and share their interests. My intention is to express feminism in the design, the concept started with a representative female space -- the dressing room. Historically, women were always required to wear particular and torturous costumes in formal occasions, such as corsets, high heels and long dress over ankle. Otherwise they would be regarded as immoral women. Same things even happen today. Women are always judged by their appearance and wearing. The concept of dressing room will provide a space for women to be whatever they want regardless of others’ judgements. I focused on the basic element of dressing room—curtain dividers. The concept of dressing room is translated into a series of curtains and continual wall systems in the space. The system can create body movements of withdrawing curtains, which have the metaphor of revealing a new appearance after getting out of the dressing room. In the interior space, a series of fabric curtains with different scales, materials and acoustic effects are distributed to divide space, sound, and time.

RETAIL SPACE

The retail part takes every element of a real dressing room. The drum kits and published magazines are hung under the coat hanger like in clothing retail store so that visitors can view them easily. In the cenral part of the retail store, there is an exhibition area for two sets of whole kits. They are surrounded by a secial metal balls curtian witch can produce nice sounds by swinging. The curve wall is decorated by soft fabric cushiosn to achieve acoustics requirement in the store.

The office space take advanteges of the continuous ceiling from the music venue. The color turns into orange and yellow in this part. For the meeting area, there is a heavy black curtain which can create private space when conference begins. When there is no meeting, the curtain can be wide open to provide lounge area for staffs. On the wall, the repeated black and white pattern are TOM TOM MAGEZINES' own LOGO.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The aim of this incubator is offer the young and developing companies space and assitant to cultivate their own bussiness. Every day there will be different kinds of people with various background come here to start their own works. When different groups of people meet, new ideas might come out. It is one of the most charming charators of incubator, the birth place of new ideas. Thus the key word of this design is Symbiosis system and cross-pollination,which can provide more possiblity for different group of people to meet new people and communicate with each other. The design concept is combining entertainment space with work space. When people are eating or playing games, they are more likely to communicate with others. Breaking down the large entertainment space into small pieces and inserting them into work space can create more opportunities for menberships to communicate with each other. When they are tired, they can easily find a place to rest and talk with their workmate, which can provide more opportunites for new ideas.

SITE ANALYSIS

The company is considering offices in Industrial City in Brooklyn. In the last few years, Sunset Park’s Industry City, a 16-building complex along 3rd Ave has become a hub for artist studios and manufacturing bases for local food purveyors and makers, as well as outposts of large companies like Time Inc. The complex has seen increasingly more foot traffic, too, with popular dance parties in the summer and now the Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg through the winter.
