SOLAR PATH

Malaysia is located near the equator, the path of the sun is almost through above our head daytime all the year. Besides, the latitude from the equator makes the difference between the solar path in rainy and dry season. Specifically, wet season’s sun goes through in front of our head, therefore we can see it in southerly sky. In dry season, the sun moves on northern sky. When it’s in summer solstice around in June or July, the sun will be seen behind our head.

site - an area of ground on which a town, building, or monument is constructed

Malaysia is located near the equator, the path of the sun is almost through above our head daytime all the year, it rises in the east and sets in the west.

CIRCULATION

Circulation refers to the way people move through and interact with a building. At Block A, there are two ways to approach the Student Leisure Centre. One of the ways is making a big round to the place, or pass through Block G, same with the way if you are at Block B, C and D. Next, there is a bridge connected Block E to Block G. Lastly, cars can straight away go into the building from the road to the parking lot.

WIND

According to the weather forecast, the wind is usually blown from west and north around UCSI University. Therefore, the western and northern side of the forest is expected to function as windbreak and protect the building from the strong wind.

WIND DIRECTION The wind direction near the parking lot is blowing to the North East.

SOUND DIRECTION The noise is mainly concentrated in construction projects and cars passing by.

At the surrounding of the carpark, there is a construction works beside the site and it cause intermittent noise. Intermittent noise is a noise level that increases and decreases rapidly.

CONSTRUCTION

CAR PASSING BY

Additionally, there will have the noise of car passing by. However, in the spaces such as the discussion room and study area, there is soundproof equipment to provide a good environment.

POTENTIAL NOISE Vegetation is integrated in an appropriate way. The vertical gardens in the enclosures of the buildings reduces noise pollution through a phenomenon called sound attenuation, which is the reduction of sound intensity.

OPENING DESIGN

Area of parking lot :

Area used :

Dimensions ( l x w x h)

Entrance Lobby :

3000 x 13000 x 6000 Entrance : 3000 x 1500 x 4000 Cafe : 7000 x 4500 x 4000 Stage : 5500 x 8500 x 4100 Study Area : 7000 x 7900 x 4000 Discussion Room : 7000 x 5000 x 4000

The building is separated into 2 sections connected with walkway. This is to disconnect the noisy area and quite zone. With the walkway, people is easier to access to different spaces at any direction.

ENTRANCE LOBBY There are two entrances in this building that leads to the entrance lobby. Both of them are opposite of the entrance lobby. The entrance lobby is meant to welcome and direct visitors, control access, and provide exit ways from buildings. Due to the glass wall on top of the wall, visitors can have an astonishing view once they enter the building.

CAFE

The café is inspired from the terrace view café. The trees outside can be a good place for the people to chill and relax. Thus, it has open and enclosed area for them to choose. Only 2 sides of the walls are made out of glass wall which are the one facing the front entrance and the one beside the vegetation. The rest are concrete because of its thermal mass properties.

SMALL STAGE

The wooden ceiling design is used to absorb sound. The left side of the wall is made of glass to allow natural daylight in. It will be installed with curtain if the sunlight is strong and also act as sound absorber at the same time.

STUDY AREA

Study area is a space designated for studying, reading, writing and etc. Hence, there's a need for privacy, quiet and peace. Thus, the space is away from the noisy parts of the building which are the café and small stage. Hardwood floor with acoustic underlayment is installed to reduce potential noise in the room. On the other hand, pivot vertical window is installed to provide an well lit with natural light, airy and comfortable place for the students to complete their work.

DISCUSSION ROOM Discussion room encourages mixing and socializing among visitors, students and even lecturers, enables multiple work activities to occur simultaneously, helps convey information, and provides amenities as a point of attraction. Somehow, there are times where discussion room will get very noisy thus sound absorbing material such as carpet and cushion is placed in the room to absorb noises. Sliding window is chosen for this space to bring in maximum amount of light.

Similar with the concept of Terrace View Cafe

Type Top-Hung Outward Justification Normally it is used above the door height.

Type Sliding

Type Pivot Vertical

Justification For Discussion Room Usually do not have table in front of it, thus Pivot Vertical is not required.

Justification For Study Area More people can feel the wind when the table is in front of it, unlike single face window.

WINDOWS

for the admission of light and air & the purpose of architectural decoration

Thermal comfort is important for health and well-being as well as productivity. A lack of thermal comfort causes stress among building occupants. When they are too warm, people can feel tired; when too cold, they will be restless and distracted.

Wooden Solar Shading

The design of these sunscreen pieces allows multiples applications, from its use as lattice to filter the light and hide stairwells and openings, to its use as balustrade, pergola or to separate two atmospheres both indoor and outdoor. They are manufactured up to 1.60 m in natural and glazed colours. They have a very simple and easy to mount fixing system, which also has a safety clip so that the pieces can not be removed easily.

This can elongate the building vertically due to the long shape of the designed building

Match with the exterior of new building, Block E

Avoid sun enter directly into the building

SHADING DESIGN

Thermal Comfort is the outcome of a well-balanced combination of building systems adapted to both the location of the building as well as the type of activity performed within the building or the room of the building.

HEAT GAIN Heat gain is the term given to a temperature rise within a space due to heat from the sun (solar radiation), heat from surfaces (long wave infrared radiation), heat originating from other sources within the space (such as heating appliances, ovens, people, mechanical systems, lights and computers)

This building has many parts made of glass, thus there will be much heat radiated by sunlight enter into the building. Heat Sources in Discussion Room : Artificial light Sunlight Human Body

Heat Sources in Stage : Artificial light Sunlight Human body

Heat Sources in Cafe : Refrigeration systems Mechanical systems Artificial light Sunlight Human body

Heat Sources in Entrance Lobby : Artificial light Sunlight Human body

Heat Sources in Study Area : Artificial light Sunlight Human Body

CAFE

POTENTIAL NOISE 1. Car passing by 2. Coffee Machines 3. Physical noise

Normally in the cafe, the potential noise would be including coffee machine sound during making coffee and also will hear some sound of a car passing by and some low-frequency sound for example like walking sound and chatting.

DESIGN STRATEGY 1. Place acoustic underlayment under hardwood floor 2. Use Double Glazed Window 3. Perforated gypsum board as acoustic wall and ceiling Acoustic underlayment prevent squeaky noise and remove annoying clatter while walking on a wooden floor. Real hardwood tends to absorb more sound than cheaper laminate wood flooring. Suitable Materials for Acoustic Underlayment : Cork Foam

S O U N D

Perforated gypsum board is an acoustical surface finishing, which providing highperformance acoustical absorption with the durability of a painted hard surface finishing.

SMALL STAGE

POTENTIAL NOISE 1. Performances 2. Announcement The small stage for performance might be a place for students to make announcement or any activities. If the noise is too loud, it might bring disturbance to the Discussion Room which is located beside it.

DESIGN STRATEGY

1. Ceiling Design 2. Soundproof Door 3. Soundproof Curtain

We can see a thick door is always used for the call and cinema, and that is called soundproof door. Ceiling design not only absorb the sound, but also decorate the space at the same time. Suitable Materials for Ceiling Design : Acoustic Foam Panels(Safest and certain solutions to your ceiling noise problem)

Suitable Materials for Soundproof Door :

Ceiling design contributes to the acoustic and thermal insulation of the environment and conceal electrical wires, pipes, heating and air conditioning systems easily.

Multi-layer Solid Wood High-quality sealing strip at the gap between the wood soundproof door and a selfdescending sealing strip at the bottom of the door to effectively block the noise.

DISCUSSION ROOM POTENTIAL NOISE 1. Discussion voice 2. Physical noise Discussion rooms are use by small groups for quiet study and/or to work on team projects. However, the discussion voice might get loud sometimes.

DESIGN STRATEGY 1. Carpet 2. Add in furniture with cushion Suitable Materials for Carpet : Mass Loaded Vinyl : very dense, which is perfect for sound absorption. Acoustic Floor Tiles : Much like normal acoustic tiles, these help to reduce echo and reverberation.

Carpet is a good choice to increase the acoustic absorbency of a room. For example, we cannot hear the sound of pen easily. Students feel more comfortable walking on it too. While furniture with cushion as soft material can absorb sound too. Moreover, students can enjoy and relax on the a more comfortable seat.

Suitable Materials for Furniture: Furniture that are upholstered in plush fabrics like suede, microfiber, chenille or corduroy can all do wonders for sound absorption.

STUDY AREA POTENTIAL NOISE 1. Discussion voice 2. Physical noise Study rooms are often visited by many students for a quiet study. However, students can produce some noises when walking and other physical noises.

Acoustic panels is use to resolve speech intelligibility issues in commercial soundproofing treatments. It can also act as wall decoration at the same time. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN SOUNDPROOF FLOORING MATERIAL?

mass density thickness

Mass helps to absorb sound waves and makes it harder for them to pass through an object. Therefore, thicker is always better.

DESIGN STRATEGY 1. Carpet 2. Add in furniture with cushion 3. Use Acoustic Panel

Suitable Materials for Acoustic Panel :

: Interior ceilings and walls : Educational, commercial, sports CHARACTERISTICS : Consistent finish, clean corners, square panels, low VOC, paintable, sound absorptive USE APPLICATIONS
