AMERICAN MADE CRAFTSMANSHIP INSIDE MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS FACTORY OUTLET MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS FACTORY OUTLET ~ 30 YEARS OF AMERICAN-MADE INNOVATION “In 1989, we set out to make the world a more comfortable place. With a shared belief that comfort has the power to change lives, Bob Williams and I started our company in Taylorsville, North Carolina, where generations of skilled artisans had been crafting quality furniture for nearly a century. This year marks our 30th Anniversary, and we continue to manufacture our eco-friendly upholstery in Taylorsville, keeping the rich tradition of furniture-making alive, while keeping jobs at home and boosting our economy.

Not only is our factory located in Taylorsville, but our corporate headquarters is based there as well, which allows Bob and me to oversee the high level of quality and comfort associated with our brand. It also allows us to ensure the safety and comfort of our team through an inclusive and family-friendly workplace. In order to make life easier for employees and their families, we provide an on-site education-based childcare center, college scholarship opportunities, a cafeteria that serves healthy meals, and a free wellness clinic staffed by a nurse.

We also continue to be devoted leaders in environmental sustainability, from the crafting of our eco-friendly upholstery, to the packing and shipping of our products. As active members of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, we work with the furniture industry to develop best practices to ensure a healthy planet for generations to come. Our customers can trust that when they buy our upholstery, they’re making a positive impact: not only in their homes and community, but on the future.” ~ Mitchell Gold, “Chair-man”

ned e w y O rofil l l a P Loc nant Helen Starnes always had an eye Te for design, so it was no surprise when

DESTINED FOR DESIGN

she and her husband Ralph opened up Vick Paint & Wallpaper Co. in High Point, NC. Helen and Ralph were a perfect team and in the 1940’s and 1950’s they became well-known for designing Market showrooms for some of the region’s most popular furniture manufacturers. Helen loved working with a blank canvas and creating a different masterpiece for every showroom she designed. She could transform the personality of any room just by selecting the right paint color or wall covering that expressed the mood she wanted it to convey.

elen of Grandmother H In loving memory Sally McEachern absolutely adored her grandmother Helen and she spent many of her childhood days following her around, watching her while she worked. It became such a part of who she was and she wouldn’t even realize how much her grandmother’s passion influenced her and became her own passion until years later. Sally followed in the footsteps of her grandmother Helen and her mother Pat. Pat was an artist and a painter and Sally always had a knack for artistic designs. Pat recalls a recent conversation she had with Sally when she told her “You always

knew what you wanted to be … I remember the day you told me ‘I’m not wasting four years of my life studying something that doesn’t interest me. I’m going to design school.’” And Sally did just that. In 1975 she attended the Atlanta School of Design in GA where she graduated and continued her design studies at Randolph Technical College (RTC) in Asheboro, NC. There she learned about all technical aspects of wiring and construction as it relates to home construction and design. As with most students enrolled at RTC, she was highly sought after and recruited by multiple employers before even graduating. Sally attended a friend’s wedding, met her soulmate Keith Bentley and after only three dates they married and she moved to Hickory where Keith owned a business in Lenoir. Sally took a job with Alderman Studios, a prominent set design studio based in High Point. She worked at their Lenoir office for the next two years designing sets for furniture product catalog photo shoots. From 1982-1984 Sally worked on commercial design projects in Hickory and in 1984 she decided it was time to open her own design firm in downtown Hickory with Marsha White, whom she met through some of her business contacts. They registered the name Designing Women, Inc. (the same year the popular TV show Designing Women aired) and focused mainly on contract design work in hospitals, hotels and corporate offices. They also worked with major developers to upfit their properties. In 1989, they were selected as the dedicated design firm to work on a $14 million renovation project at Catawba Memorial Hospital, designing the hospital’s first birthing center along with their emergency room and MRI and oncology centers. Their contract clients started requesting their help to design their personal homes as well so they started spending more time at Hickory Furniture Mart. In 1996 they decided to move their office from downtown Hickory to an office next to Hickory Furniture Mart since all showroom spaces inside the Mart were completely full. About a year later, a cozy little nook opened up and Designing Women moved their office inside Hickory Furniture Mart, offering commercial and residential design services and their unique Designer for the Day program. Sally and Marsha enjoyed the success of their new venture together, but Sally had always

From L-R: Kirste n Hart-White, Sa lly Bentley, Donna Chamberla in, Gina Simmon s dreamed of owning her own design firm and growing it to another level, so she took over the company and continued to grow Designing Women, hiring several interior designers and offering design graduates internships throughout their college years. Two of these interns, Kirsten Hart-White and Gina Simmons, made their way back to find a permanent home on Sally’s design team to work alongside Sally and Donna Chamberlain who was a former designer and furniture business owner already working at the Mart. And Becky Stokes (Sally’s daughter) has also recently joined Designing Women as their Operations Director, handling all the logistics of the business. Today Designing Women is a successful and established interior design firm offering professional design services in residential and commercial design along with their popular Designer for the Day program. They work with clients locally and all over the world both in person and online. When asked if she still has the same passion she did in the beginning, Sally smiles and says “My job truly is my hobby. I would still be designing every single day, even if I didn’t do this for a living.” HFM

THE LION’S DEN INTERIORS From the mid-1960’s through 1970, Kim Sigmon recalls running through the Ethan Allen furniture factory plant in Maiden, NC, where her father David worked long days and nights to support his loving family at home. Kim remembers

69 Kim Sigmon, 19

watching the factory workers with curiosity while furniture was being upholstered and wood was being finished all around her. She still reminisces about the sounds and the smells of that factory. It makes her smile to remember spending all that time with her father and being around every aspect of furniture. Little did she know, her exposure to this factory would become such a major influence throughout the rest of her life. Kim’s mom Barbara always had a passion for fine furniture and a deep love for lion statues, so in 1998, it was no surprise that when Kim opened up her own furniture business, she would call it The Lion’s Den Interiors in loving memory of her dear mother Barbara who passed away from cancer just three years prior. Kim had several people who inspired and mentored her along the way, exposing her to a world of exquisite antiques, solid Mahogany designs and traditional fine furniture. She continues to seek out unique products that set her store apart from everyone else. Today, The Lion’s Den Interiors specializes in traditional and solid Mahogany furnishings, porcelain keepsakes, bronze statues, unique lamps,

MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS FACTORY OUTLET

Mike Eaton was only 16 years old when he started working for a small local furniture retailer. They only had four employees. They each did everything from selling furniture to warehousing and even delivering it. Mike learned every aspect of the furniture business inside and out throughout the nearly 30 years that he worked in retail furniture. In 1998, he decided to open his own clearance center, where he

represented and sold clearance products from several North Carolina based furniture manufacturers. At the time, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams was not the common household name it is today. But Mike fell in love instantly with the product and the people making it. He knew that it was just a matter of time before everyone else would learn about it and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams would become the phenomenon that it is today.

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams became more and more popular as they started partnering with additional retailers, designers and distributors around the world. They also began showcasing their products at the furniture Markets in High Point and eventually decided to open up their own independent retail stores. With all of this growth and transition came even more inventory and the need to increase their customer base by partnering with an established and recognizable location already frequented by furniture shoppers. So in 2006. Mike, Mitchell and Bob

Mike Eaton decided to move their showroom from Hwy. 70 at Hwy. 321, just down the road to Hickory Furniture Mart. They opened up their new Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Factory Outlet with approximately 18,000 square feet of showroom space. This year while Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams will be celebrating their 30th anniversary, Mike will be celebrating his 21st year of owning his business, which transformed from a multi-line clearance center to the one and only factory-owned and authorized Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Factory Outlet that he continues to operate today. THE LIGHT PLACE It was serendipity along with the help of a few old friends that brought Anne Wepner to the world of lighting. In 2010 she opened a small local lighting gallery in Newton, NC and called it Fixtures N More, where she sold lamps and lighting fixtures to the local community. Then in 2011, she decided to attend a regional chamber business networking event that was being hosted at Hickory Furniture Mart and as luck would have it, her table was placed directly in front of a recently vacated showroom with beautiful display windows along with a private dock. She could not help but think about all the possibilities that a larger space could bring. It was at that same time that the general manager of the Mart introduced herself to Anne and they immediately started talking 24

about that space for a proposed second lighting gallery. Within a couple of months, Anne had decided to expand her lighting business and open a second lighting gallery inside Hickory Furniture Mart and called it The Light Place. She increased her offerings to include accessories, mirrors and smaller furniture pieces, in addition to all varieties of lamps, shades, chandeliers, ceiling fans and indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures. Anne’s customers in Newton were mainly locals and her showroom visitors at the Mart were a great mix of local, out-of-state and international customers. So, in 2013 she decided to consolidate her two locations into one and moved all of her inventory over to Hickory Furniture Mart where she continues to operate her business 9 years later. When asked what makes them different than other lighting stores, Anne says “Our specialty is providing our customers with that unique

WHAT TYPE OF FUEL SHOULD I USE FOR MY OUTDOOR FIRE PIT? Outdoor fire pits have become increasingly popular for homeowners and it’s important to understand what type of fuel to select in order to safely burn your new fire pit in your outdoor space.

ETHANOL Ethanol is a renewable resource and is very environmentally friendly. It will only release steam, carbon dioxide and heat so you won’t have to deal with excessive amounts of smoke distracting you and your guests away from your fireside conversations. It is very easy to maintain, but it will not produce as much heat as other fuel options available.

both closed or turned to the off position before lighting it. Open the valve on the propane tank first. Then light a long match or use a wand lighter so your hand is a safe distance away from the flame. Keep the flame in the center of the pit while turning the valve on your fire pit open. Once it is ignited, immediately remove the lighter. Propane is often more expensive than other fuel types and it is also not sustainable since it does not originate from a renewable source.

If you already have a natural gas line that feeds into your home, this would be a very easy option for you to utilize with very little maintenance required. You would not need to worry about stocking up on wood resources or fuel tanks; however natural gas is a fossil fuel and releases harmful greenhouse gases which are not good for the environment. If your fire pit is hooked up to a natural gas line, you will need to ensure the fire pit valve is closed before lighting it. Use a wand lighter or a long match. Start the flame in the center of the burn area, while slowly turning the valve open. As soon as it ignites, pull the lighter or match away from the flame and adjust to your desired setting.

PROPANE Propane is fairly easy to use and you simply flip the switch on or off in order to start or stop your flame. It also produces enough heat and warmth for a large group of people. If you are using a propane tank, make sure the valve on the propane tank and the valve on the fire pit are 30

NATURAL GAS

WOOD Many people prefer using wood for its natural elements. They enjoy hearing the relaxing, crackling sound made and the scent of the burning wood. It is also environmentally friendly and produces the right amount of heat whether it be for an individual or a group. Reduce your burned particle pollution by only burning seasoned, dry wood, which burns hotter and cleaner. You may use a moister meter to check your firewood. Wood moisture content is best at about 20 percent. If you select wood as your fuel source, you will need to consider a weather proof storage option for your wood resources and the burned wood will require some additional maintenance and cleaning afterwards as well. And never burn wood during air quality alert days or if you live in an area where forest or wildfires are common.

WHAT IF MY FIRE PIT DOES NOT IGNITE? If your fire pit does not ignite, here are a few items to check. Always refer to your owner’s manual or contact the retailer or manufacturer with any questions you may have.

ANY MISSING PARTS? Check to see if you may have any missing parts or parts that do not fit properly. Either may result in your fire pit failing to ignite.

EMPTY FUEL SOURCE? Check any fuel tanks to make sure they are not empty and replenish any wood supplies you may by using.

IMPROPER VALVE OPENING? Is the gas valve completely open, on and rotated all the way to the left? Partially opened valves may limit proper gas flow from the fuel supply to the burner and may prevent your fire pit from igniting properly.

HIGH WINDS? Try to avoid igniting your fire pit during times of high winds or strong breezes. You may purchase an accessory called a wind guard that protects the flame and also optimizes air flow as needed.

IMPROPER CARE OR MAINTENANCE? You should always clean and properly store your fire pit and its cover after each use to ensure its longevity and to safeguard it against potential harmful outdoor elements such as debris, UV sun rays, moisture buildup and pests. Check its burner ports and orifice to ensure they are not clogged and remain free of blockage from any debris. Insects are often attracted to the smell of gas and sometimes will nest inside the ports. This could result in potential gas leaks. If your fire pit is equipped with an ignitor and/or thermocouple, inspect it as well for blockages and corrosion. If you have fire media, ensure that the media is evenly distributed across the burner. And remember that a qualified gas serviceperson should always inspect your fire pit if you suspect any damage or defects so you are able to enjoy many years of safety and relaxation around your outdoor fires with your family and friends. For all of your sunroom, patio and outdoor fire pit and furniture needs, visit our showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart where you will find a diverse selection of outdoor weathered products to enhance your outdoor space at home or at work. veryone knows it. Everyone uses it. Yet to those who live in Hickory and the Catawba Valley region, the definition of furniture is so much deeper, richer and stronger. People eat, sleep and breathe furniture in this community. So much of who we are and what we do revolves around this one simple word. The history of furniture runs so deep in our community that its roots intertwine with countless industries, businesses and common aspects of everyday life. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 60% of all furniture in American homes originates from North Carolina furniture manufacturers and related industry vendors. And many of these furniture businesses are located right here in our region. If you ever visit Hickory, you will notice that almost everywhere you turn, the people you meet all have some connection to furniture. Whether their grandfather hauled lumber to a local sawmill for furniture production, their 36

father worked directly in a factory upholstering furniture, or their aunt worked as an interior designer helping visitors select the best furniture for their homes, for over a century, this community has truly been shaped by furniture. To this day, when you travel around the world and tell people where you are from, they almost always smile and recite that one familiar word: FURNITURE. Hickory can trace its furniture heritage back to the early 1900’s. George W. Hall was a local merchant who watched freight trains haul southern lumber to northern furniture factories. Hall and a group of Hickory businessmen and bankers decided that Hickory’s regional lumber supplies should be used to build furniture in Hickory to support the local economy. After much deliberation and careful planning, they opened up the first furniture factory in town and called it Hickory Furniture Company. Hall was only 28 years old at the time when he

managed that first factory and after it was successful, he decided to help start Hickory’s second furniture factory - Martin Furniture Co., which opened less than a year later. These two factories helped create a solid foundation for furniture manufacturers to grow and branch off into new companies for many years to come. The plentiful lumber resources and trade routes along the native rivers in the Catawba Valley region provided a natural pathway, which encouraged skilled craftsmen and designers to settle in Hickory. These craftsmen trained the eager workforce that already existed in the area. By the 1920’s and 1930’s, more furniture factories continued to open and expand throughout Hickory and the Catawba Valley. In the late 1950’s another local businessman and his wife — Leroy Lail and Lynn Mull Lail — owned a successful motel and restaurant in Hickory. Mull’s Motel and Restaurant was already a popular destination for furniture 800-462-MART

The original Mull’s Motel and Restaurant

wholesale dealers and buyers traveling through town on business. Since many of these buyers stayed at the motel and ate at the restaurant while they were in town, several local furniture manufacturers decided to establish Mull’s as a central meeting point to showcase all of their product lines to potential new customers. Once their product lines became larger and more diverse, Leroy and Lynn offered to open up the basement of their restaurant to these furniture manufacturers so they could display more of their products to these buyers who were already staying on-site at their motel. It was around 1960, when Leroy Lail encouraged a core group of local furniture manufacturers to come together as an industry and display their products twice a year on a much larger scale; once in the spring and once in the fall. The manufacturers agreed and this bi-annual wholesale furniture event became known as The Southern Furniture Market, which took place on the same site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart. The Southern Furniture Market continued to gain popularity and grow in attendance over the years. By 1985, the Lail family decided to convert their biannual wholesale furniture exhibition space into a year-round retail furniture destination where locally owned furniture manufacturers could distribute their products through locally owned retail furniture showrooms. For the first time ever, visitors from around the world now had public access to the most diverse high-quality handcrafted furniture selections available with the additional benefit of receiving exclusive industry discounts that were comparable to wholesale pricing. The Southern Furniture Wholesale Market officially transitioned into Hickory Furniture Mart and Hickory soon became known as The Furniture Capital of The World. To this day, visitors from every US state and several international countries continue to travel to Hickory Furniture Mart to purchase their furniture where the quality, value, selection and service is unlike anywhere else. 800-462-MART

Over the years the furniture industry has continued to transform itself. Like any industry, it has weathered the natural ebbs and flows of the economic pendulum, and it continues to evolve. The advancement of technology has changed not only the way furniture is manufactured, distributed and sold, but it also opens up new modernized career opportunities in both furniture and design. For those companies and job seekers willing to embrace these changes, the opportunities are endless. Today, the furniture industry in this region is experiencing substantial growth, especially in custom upholstered products. Many manufacturers are expanding and finding a need to add to their workforce in order to meet an increased demand for their products. This presents a new set of challenges for the furniture industry … training the next generation with the same expert skills of previous generations. Understanding this emerging need, several local furniture manufacturers proactively joined forces to recruit and train the next generation of furniture craftsmen. Their vision was to create an industry-driven training program that would prepare students for skilled Polishing positions that are in high-demand by one of the region’s largest employers ~ the furniture industry.

The program partners with a local community college and offers a series of classes including furniture fundamentals, pattern making, manual and automated cutting, sewing, introduction to upholstery, inside and outside upholstery and spring up. Students learn the necessary skills from experienced craftsman within the local furniture community. The Furniture Academy at Catawba Valley Community College currently has two campus locations in this region and is used as a successful model for other cities and states who have added similar programs in shared and related industries. Century Furniture, Lee Industries, Lexington Home Brands, Sherrill Furniture and Vanguard Furniture are all founding partners of this program, which continues to receive accolades for their vision and commitment to working together as a community to fulfill a common need. The Furniture Academy not only helps furniture manufacturers obtain skilled craftsmen, it also helps support the local workforce and directly benefits the regional economy. As the world continues to change, so will the furniture industry. Preserving time-honored traditions of handcrafting high-quality furniture will remain a top priority but will also be modified to meet the changing demands of a new generation that is more mobile, tech savvy and environmentally conscious. These are all common challenges within any industry, but the furniture industry in this region has a proven track record for being a resilient community that rises to the occasion with any good challenge. IGNITING A PASSION FOR RUGS Every Oriental rug tells a story, and these stories are intricately woven into each rug by the skilled hands of some of the most gifted craftsmen. The art of rug weaving is a timehonored tradition in many cultures that is commonly passed down from one generation to the next. But that was not the case with David Mostafaloo. He was born and raised in Iran but his father was not in the rug business. Working in the import/export business allowed David to travel the world. He remembers vividly the exact moment when he realized he had a passion for rugs and a natural intuition that would send him on a successful journey to opening his own

Mostafaloo David and Saman rug gallery and devoting his life to supporting the remarkable rug weavers and the cultural traditions of his native land. “I remember traveling with a business associate of mine, who was also an avid rug collector. One day while we were traveling, he stopped in this place to look at a gorgeous Oriental rug that caught his eye. He really liked the rug, however he noticed an imperfection and revealed it to the owner. The rug dealer argued with him and my colleague showed me how the rug patterns did not align properly and the colors did not match up. I understood exactly what he was saying and it instantly triggered a passion inside of me and a desire to know more about these rugs and the process of how they are created. I started to look at them differently … not as rugs, but as pieces of artwork that tell stories with every color, pattern and knot. I knew at that very moment that my life had just completely changed.” 800-462-MART

He continues to expand his inventory by listening to his customers every day.

d, 2002 Grand Opening A After that business trip, David started to learn as much as he possibly could about rugs. He took a job in a large rug gallery and listened to customers every day when they shared what they wanted and what they didn’t want in a rug. He started to notice that customers in different areas of the world, different cultures and different backgrounds, liked different colors, different patterns, and different styles. He didn’t want customers to just select from a pile of rugs, he wanted to also give them the opportunity to customize their own rugs, based on what inspired them. So in 2002, he decided to open up his own gallery inside Hickory Furniture Mart and called it Unique Oriental Rugs & More by David. He started out with only 49 rugs and a modest showroom space of only 700 square feet. In 2004 he expanded to about 3,000 square feet and nearly doubled his inventory. And then he noticed that previous customers started referring their friends and family to him. He wanted to offer his loyal customers even more options, so in 2006, he expanded his current gallery to 11,000 square feet and now offers over 2,000 rug choices.

Along the way, David has inspired his son Saman to become a second generation rug dealer. After completing his business management degree at UNC Charlotte, Saman joined David as a partner in the family business. They recently changed their business name to Roya Rugs, which means dream in Persian. This ties back to their family’s Persian heritage. Saman is passionate about keeping the tradition of rug weaving alive and exposing it to a new generation. He has even personally designed a new line of rugs that speaks more to the millennial generation. Saman believes color is the most important aspect of any rug since no style ever really dies. “You will always find people who prefer traditional rugs and some that prefer contemporary rugs, but depending on where they live, the architecture changes. The key to changing the look of a rug is to discover new and exciting colors in everyday life. I look at everything as a color. I look at different aspects of nature and see colors that have never been used before. I look at fabrics and visualize a combination of colors that would make beautiful patterns in rugs.” Both David and Saman shared that in the rug industry, you are constantly looking 1-2 years ahead to identify new colors, new patterns and new trends since it takes approximately 6 months to a year for a rug weaver to create a new rug. And they want to make sure they offer rugs for every style, size and budget in a variety of hand-knotted, hand-loomed and hand-tufted options, which is why they proudly feature the largest selection of antique and new rugs around. David said it’s exciting to watch his baby boomer customers bring in their millennial children to work with Saman. He understands what they are looking for to create an environment at home that expresses their individuality. It’s a dream and a passion that David and Saman now share together through Roya Rugs. David Bolick is the third generation in a family of furniture retailers and manufacturers. He is also a business owner and partner in Hickory Park Furniture Galleries. David’s grandfather Charles Sr. worked at Southern Furniture Co. for years and his father Charles Jr. also started his career in furniture at Southern Furniture Co. sweeping its factory floors at a very young age. Charles Jr. would soon move on to work at other furniture companies learning as much as possible about the furniture industry and quickly working his way up through the ranks.

GOOD’S HOME FURNISHINGS CELEBRATES THEIR 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY The owners of Good’s Home Furnishings, Randy Good and Scott Lever, collectively have around 50 years of experience within the furniture industry. They met and started working together for a well-known furniture retailer in 1992. Since they had cultivated solid relationships with all of their manufacturers, vendors and employees throughout the years, they felt it was the perfect opportunity to branch out on their own. In a time when many other retailers were adjusting their businesses in order to survive, Good’s Home Furnishings was creating a new company. They opened their first small location inside the Mart in the summer of 2009 and today have five locations occupying nearly 90,000 square feet inside Hickory Furniture Mart plus a 25,000 square foot location in Pineville, NC.

CELEBRATING 101 YEARS AND FOUR GENERATIONS OF SELLING FURNITURE development, so Ed Jr. decided to move out of their downtown location and move back to Connelly Springs and run their store there.

The Hudson family first made their way to Rhodhiss, North Carolina in 1917. Shortly thereafter, Southern Power Company acquired the Hudson family farmland to build what is now known as Rhodhiss Dam, so Jones Edney (J.E.) Hudson moved his family to 250 acres of land, next to the main railroad station in Connelly Springs.

At that time, most railroad stations were using Morse Code as a key method of sending communication back and forth between engine and caboose crews, so J.E. quickly taught himself Morse Code and found work at a nearby railroad station. His dedication and strong work ethic was soon recognized and rewarded with a promotion and transfer to the Connelly Springs Station where he dedicated 32 years of his life working as their Station Master. Since J.E. ended his daily shifts at 8am each morning, he and his nephew Fred Hudson decided to go into business together and open a general store where they sold groceries, shoes and tailor made clothing to the local community during the day. But not long after they opened their business, a fire broke out and burned two adjoining buildings, so J.E. and Fred decided to rebuild and shift their focus from selling general merchandise to furniture and farm equipment. After 19 years of working side by side, J.E. and Fred decided to divide the business up and

Shortly after, Lindy was drafted into the US Army, so J.E. Sr. and Ed Jr. continued to run the store together until J.E. Sr.’s passing. After his father’s death, Lindy was allowed to leave the Army and return home to help care for his mother and continue running the family business, which was now called Hudson Furniture, with his brother. Ed Jr. and Lindy rented an additional building in Hickory to expand and open a second location of their business. Lindy ran the Connelly Springs store and Ed Jr. ran the Hickory store. Lindy purchased the former White Furniture Building in downtown Hickory and called it Lindy’s Furniture, where it still sits today and is operated by Lindy’s daughter Katie HudsonPurgason. In 2016, Katie had the vision to expand and open a third location called Simply Home by Lindy’s, which is located inside Hickory Furniture Mart. They started small but have been extremely successful with their family business model and have already expanded three times within the last two years. When asked what has made her family businesses so successful all these years, Katie shared “We’ve always stayed true to our values from day one. The entire family is heavily involved from my father all the way down to the grandkids. We run an honest business and we treat our customers just like we would our own family. We know if we treat them well, they will come back year after year. We think it’s important to offer good prices, easy credit and great selections that are affordable to everyone. I think my grandfather would be very proud of the way we have honored his legacy and I’m just sorry that he couldn’t be here to celebrate our 100 year anniversary with us last year.” HFM

OUTLETS OFFER INSTANT GRATIFICATION, SAVINGS AND IMMEDIATE AVAILABILITY Hickory Furniture Mart has been well-known for years as one of North Carolina’s most trusted furniture and design resources. The Mart offers a unique mix of first line showrooms (where custom furniture is ordered), private galleries (special sections devoted to specific manufacturers), outlets (where discounted product is offered immediately “as is” off the showroom floor) and factory direct outlets (where special product is brought in directly from the manufacturers’ factories and sold immediately off the floor “as is”).

Once an item is purchased in an outlet, it is not likely that the same exact piece will show up in their inventory again. Most customers enjoy mixing and matching outlet items with custom product. The savings found on a piece of furniture inside an outlet will allow you to invest a little more in that custom fabric you want to place on another piece of furniture from a first line showroom.

Outlets are also invaluable to customers who have experienced a natural disaster. Unfortunately victims of natural disasters often find themselves in need of furniture immediately and most of their local resources are typically out of stock or backlogged with so much unexpected demand coming in at the same time. Our outlets and retail showrooms will work together to offer additional discounts and request expedited delivery options for entire communities affected by these types of natural disasters. Outlet product is also great for rental properties or second homes as you are able to furnish more rooms with quality furniture for much less.

If you find out at the last minute that you will be entertaining family and need to finish furnishing that spare room, an outlet is the perfect place to pick up additional items quickly.

Stop by and visit all of the outlets inside Hickory Furniture Mart and take advantage of the tremendous selection and savings available throughout the entire year. HFM

Typical outlet savings range from 65-80 % off normal retail prices. Most outlet product consists of retail showroom samples, overruns, closeouts, one-of-a kind High Point Market samples and custom orders that retailers or customers have canceled. New outlet product arrives direct from factories weekly so outlet

inventories are constantly changing. If you find something you seriously want in an outlet, do not wait to buy it since most outlets are not able to hold product for you and sales are made on a first come basis.

his wife Jaye in Miami when he was working as a special education teacher and she was working as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines. They would marry about a year later and move to Chicago where Larry had accepted a job offer with Saks Fifth Avenue in their leasing division and Jaye transferred with Delta. Larry’s grandfather was the president of a high-end leather and fur business. During one of their visits, Larry’s grandfather convinced him to work in the business. We replace every tree used to make our furniture through an innovative tree replacement program we developed with the Virginia Department of Forestry. All of the lumber used to make our furniture comes from within a day’s drive of our factories, which helps create a small carbon footprint related to the transportation of our materials and of course we stringently follow every environmental regulation. traveled around the world selling high-end jewelry to wholesalers and retailers. She fully understood the needs and desires of her affluent clientele and she was highly respected by her vendors and industry peers. As she entered into her late fifties, when so many others in the business were looking forward to an early retirement, Monique decided to completely shift course and challenge herself in a new industry, but one that shared the same type of customer. She took a job with a local furniture company in High Point, NC and sold high-end residential and commercial leather furniture. She learned everything she could, not only about the furniture industry, but also about premium leathers, and quickly established valuable key contacts in both industries.

With the support of many local manufacturers, Monique decided to open up her own premier leather furniture company in 2004. She started out with only 3,000 square feet of showroom space and called it Leather and More. Her goal was to eventually expand and move into a second location inside Hickory Furniture Mart, but at the time, the Mart was completely full. In late 2005, a space became available at the Mart, which was about double the size of her High Point location, so she convinced her son Jason to join her as a partner in the business and run the Hickory location. Then in late 2008, when an even larger 11,000 square foot showroom became available inside the Mart, they decided to expand and consolidate the entire business, moving all of their operations to Hickory, where they continue to operate today offering a wide variety of

American Made premium leather furniture products to all of their customers. HFM

ned e w l O ly Profi l a Loc nant Te Eddie Bumgarner was raised

AMISH OAK & CHERRY

in Sawmills, NC and always had a love for old cars. In his youth, when he wasn’t admiring old cars, he was working at Franklin Furniture, which was a local furniture wholesaler. In 2000, Eddie and his cousin Ronnie, who also had worked in the furniture industry, decided to go into the furniture business together. They decided to focus on handcrafted Amish furniture because they liked its premium quality and craftsmanship and there were not a lot of Amish furniture retailers in the industry at that time. They opened up their new business along Hwy. 321 and started buying product from a handful of Amish builders. Those builders quickly told their friends and other Amish builders how much they enjoyed working with Eddie and Ronnie and the number of Amish builders continued to grow until finally Eddie and Ronnie decided they needed a second location in order to display all the additional products they now offered.

They wanted to be in a location where customers appreciated the fine craftsmanship of their Amish builders, so in 2002 they opened up a second showroom, which was 5,000 square feet, inside Hickory Furniture

Mart. Eddie brought his daughter Misty in to manage the Hickory showroom and they continued to expand, adding more and more Amish builders each year. In 2005, a much larger space opened up inside the Mart and they doubled their size moving into a 10,000 square foot showroom. Then in 2007, Eddie and Ronnie dissolved their partnership and Ronnie continued to run his business in Lenoir, while Eddie continued to run his business in Hickory. Two short years later in 2009, Eddie and Misty made yet another move inside the Mart, expanding their showroom space to nearly 30,000 square feet and featuring a total of 165 Amish builders. They also added several local North Carolina upholstery manufacturers to the mix. Amish Oak & Cherry proudly represents only American Made products throughout their entire showroom. They strongly believe in supporting American builders, manufacturers and their families. Family is extremely important to both Eddie and Misty. In fact, Misty and her husband Jeremy welcomed their adorable twins Sadie and Charleigh into the family in July of 2015 and they have already been introduced to the family

Family from Left to daughter Charleigh Right: Jeremy with , Misty with daug hter Sadie, Sandy and Eddie business by sharing an office with their mom since day one. And this year, Jeremy has also decided to join the family business and is working inside the showroom full time. Sadie and Charleigh are the light of Eddie and his wife Sandy’s lives and they feel very blessed to have their grandchildren eventually carry on their legacy by introducing a new generation of customers to a third generation of Amish furniture retailers. THE WOODEN SPOOL CAFÉ

were already running a successful catering business together when they were approached by a colleague about taking over the operations of a popular local chain that operated a small café inside Hickory Furniture Mart. Café Gouda had three different locations at the time and had decided to put their focus back into just running their primary location based in the Viewmont community of Hickory. Chuck and Jordan were managing all of the banquets and catering events being held at Mosteller Mansion, a premier events venue just around the corner from the Mart, so running a small, intimate café close by presented them with an ideal opportunity to expand their business and take on a new challenge. So in 2012, Chuck and Jordan decided to open The Wooden Spool Café inside Hickory Furniture Mart.

Jordan Spaller

The Wooden Spool Café

Spaller, Owners Chuck and Jordan They completely revamped the menu of the previous café and started offering daily specials that became so popular with Mart customers and employees, that they even started pulling in more local residents who wanted to stop by for lunch to try these popular specials they had been hearing about for so long. Since then, their menu has grown to an assortment of homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and a number of popular sides. A definite crowd pleaser is the sour cream potato salad, and for the vegetarian in your group, there’s a roasted vegetable wrap and a signature tomato basil soup that both receive rave reviews. 64

The food is just one thing that makes The Wooden Spool Café special. In 2018, the café completely remodeled their space, and Chuck and Jordan asked skilled local furniture craftsman to create several furniture pieces for them to be used inside the café. The rustic décor also includes a number of creative pieces made by local artists. Several of these craftsmen and artisans within the Hickory community choose The Wooden Spool Café as the perfect place to display their artistry to Hickory Furniture Mart visitors from around the world.

Chuck Spaller

Chuck Spaller brings more than 40 years of experience in the restaurant and catering business and handles most of the day-today operations. His son, Jordan, is a Johnson & Wales University graduate who grew up in the restaurant industry and now works for one of the largest hotel chains in Charlotte. Together, they’ve turned The Wooden Spool Café into something very special — an exciting destination that’s definitely worth visiting. TASTE FULL BEANS COFFEEHOUSE AND TASTE FULL ARTS GALLERY In November 2000, David (DW) Bentley and business partner Edgar Hernandez decided to open up their very first coffeehouse and art gallery in downtown Hickory. They called it Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse and Gallery and partnered with a well-known roastery in Asheville, NC to offer a special line of regional roasted coffees to their customers. DW and Edgar were also very connected within the local arts community. They envisioned their new place to be a way for local artists and community residents and visitors to connect with one another and share their love for artistry and community development. It wasn’t long until they started talking to area businesses and community organizations to discuss ways to re-vitalize the downtown area.

they opened Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse inside Hickory Furniture Mart. They offered their special blend coffees from Asheville that had become so popular at their downtown location. They also added homemade pastries, quick lunch items, snacks along with dairy farm ice cream and other popular specialty cold and hot beverages. Not long after opening their second location inside the Mart, there was another unexpected opportunity to expand into a third location inside the Hickory Library. DW and Edgar quickly expanded their team to help them operate all three locations simultaneously and DW asked his mom Jean to manage their coffeehouse operations inside the Mart. After several years of operating three locations, DW and Edgar decided to refocus their efforts and sell their downtown location to a local couple who had expressed interest to them several times. Scott and Julie Owens still own and operate it in that same downtown location today, now adding beer and wine to their menu as well. DW and Edgar also decided to sell off their business inside the library, but DW just could not part with their location inside Hickory Furniture Mart. They had built too many relationships over the years and in 2018 celebrated their 10-year anniversary inside the Mart.

ner, DW Bentley, Ow Jean Bentley and s Coffeehouse Taste Full Bean They soon partnered with the Hickory Downtown Development Association and co-created what is now known as the Downtown Hickory Art Crawl, showcasing local artwork and bringing more residents and visitors downtown to enjoy a more vibrant and creative arts scene. On the other side of town, there was another popular coffeehouse called Hickory Coffee Company that was located inside Hickory Furniture Mart. In 2008, they decided to venture into the new business of mobile coffee trucks and as soon as they left, DW and Edgar saw this as the perfect opportunity to expand their business into a second location. In August 2008, 800-462-MART

After a decade of success running his coffeehouse inside the Mart, DW decided to go back to his creative roots and showcase local artwork inside the Mart. He opened up a new dedicated 1100 square foot art gallery called Taste Full ARTS that features originallocal-soulful art exhibits and monthly meet-the artist receptions. The collaboration between Taste Full Beans and Hickory Furniture Mart continues to produce exciting original art exhibits not only inside their new art gallery, but also displays original artwork throughout the common areas of the building, inside the café and on the walls around the coffeehouse. With 25 current artisans on display and over 500 pieces of original-local-soulful works available on-site, Mart shoppers are able to indulge their artful senses and take home a little piece of North Carolina with them.

Offerings inside the gallery include art forms such as oil, pastel, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, exotic and reclaimed wood custom furniture, pottery, ceramics, fused glass, marquetry, quilling, photography and embellished giclees. SHIPPING YOUR FURNITURE HOME SAFELY CONSOLIDATED SHIPPING PROVIDED BY J&L FURNITURE SERVICES We realize that you may have traveled hundreds, even thousands of miles to make your furniture purchases with us. We want to make sure that your furniture arrives safely to your final destination so we have set up a consolidated shipping office inside the Mart to help answer any questions you may have about shipping before you leave the building. The Mart’s consolidated shipping service is managed by J&L Furniture Services and is located on Level 3 at the North entrance. They will work directly with the showrooms inside the Mart and the delivery companies to ensure that your merchandise is transported safely and professionally to your home after you leave. Shipping charges are separate from your furniture purchases and there is an additional one-time $25 consolidated shipping service fee per customer in order to cover the cost of managing your consolidated shipment all the way from your showroom purchases through the delivery to your home. If you are only ordering from one showroom or receiving separate shipments from each showroom, there will be no $25 consolidation fee added to your order. The showrooms will provide you with an estimate of your shipping charges before you leave the building and the delivery company will confirm the exact shipping charges after they pick up your furniture from each showroom and weigh your complete order together. Shipping charges are calculated by the total weight of your complete order and the zip code where you order is being shipped. If you wish to consolidate your purchases into one delivery, you will just need to place all of your orders in the same name and fill out the “Request for Consolidation of Merchandise” form located at every Guest Services desk, inside each showroom or inside J&L Furniture Services’ office, located on Level 3 at the North entrance. J&L Furniture Services works with professional in-home delivery companies to arrange shipment of your furniture to anywhere in the world. We encourage you to stop by their office and speak with Luis Rodriguez during normal Mart hours. If Luis is assisting other customers and not available 66

hickoryfurniture.com

in his office, please call or text him on his cell phone at 828-390-8407 or email him at luis@ jlfurnitureservices.com and he will respond as soon as possible. You will need to turn in your consolidated shipping form to J&L Furniture Services’ office as soon as you are finished shopping, even if you do not want your furniture shipped right away. Merchandise that is purchased and is “ready-to-go” off the showroom floor may be shipped separately from special-order merchandise that may take a few weeks to arrive. This is called a split shipment. If you are interested in this option, please let Luis know which furniture you would like to ship first and which furniture you would like delivered at a later date and he will arrange this directly with the delivery company. You may also wait until all of your custom order pieces arrive in order to receive one single delivery with everything together. If your merchandise needs to be stored for a longer period of time due to a delay in home construction or your personal schedule, please discuss this with Luis so that he is able to inform you of any related storage fees. Typically the delivery companies are willing to store furniture for 30 days before any storage fees are incurred, but it depends on how much space they have available inside their warehouse at the time. Contact J&L Furniture Services directly for information regarding your order, including the name of your assigned delivery company and whether or not all stores have released your purchases to the delivery company in order to schedule your shipment. All remaining balances must be paid and all stores must release your furniture before the delivery company is able to schedule your shipment. Just a friendly reminder that the estimated delivery times below start AFTER all account balances have been paid in full to all showrooms and AFTER all furniture has been released by every showroom and picked up by the delivery company. Southeast: 2-3 weeks Midwest: 4-6 weeks

East Coast: 2-4 weeks West Coast: 6-8 weeks

Your delivery company will notify you at least 48 hours before your home delivery is scheduled. Please make sure that they have your correct delivery address and phone number and it is important to confirm that the shipment includes all of the furniture you purchased from each showroom. Be sure to clear enough space in every room where your furniture is scheduled to be set up. You may be asked to provide an extra person at your home to assist with unloading your furniture if any single item weighs more than 350 pounds or if any large, heavy furniture must be carried up stairs or through narrow turns. Upon arrival of your furniture, please have payment ready for all shipping charges. When the delivery company calls you to schedule your delivery date, they will provide you with your total shipping cost at that time. Approved forms of payment include certified check or money order. Payment is required prior to unloading any of your merchandise. It is extremely important to carefully inspect each piece of furniture as it is unwrapped and brought into your home. If there are any damages, you must refuse the damaged item and contact J&L Furniture Services immediately. Make notes on your bill of lading regarding any damaged or missing items so that Luis may address the situation promptly with the showrooms and delivery company. We are able to schedule consolidated shipping for our customers anywhere around the world. If you have international shipping needs, please mention this upfront and let us know if we will need to coordinate shipping from North Carolina to your final international destination or if you have a domestic consolidator that we will need to work with and we will be happy to coordinate these arrangements through our international freight forwarder. We are happy to help set up these arrangements for you. We look forward to your future visit to the Mart. Should you have any additional questions regarding your consolidated shipping needs, please contact J&L Furniture Services prior to, during or after your visit. HFM 800-462-MART
