Third generation about to hit the market
Australian dairy farmers will be excited to know that a third generation of one of the nation’s most popular bull families is about to hit the market.
Wilara Lukie semen will be available this spring and signs are promising that he will live up to the stellar reputation of his father Carenda Varley A22 and Grandfather Carenda Pemberton A22, all marketed by Genetics Australia from Holstein Master Breeder Kitchens Farm Boyanup, Western Australia.
“Pemberton and Varley are two of Australia’s premier bulls and Varley is our number one selling bull at the moment,” Genetics Australia Gippsland regional sales manager Katrina Galindo said.
Carenda Pemberton got his daughter-proven proof this year.
“He has more than 350 milking daughters and they are going incredibly well, with excellent scores for likeability and temperament as well as production and type,” Ms Galindo said.
“He’s producing exactly what farmers want – cows that are easy to milk and are good producers.”
Ms Galindo said there were high hopes for Wilara Lukie’s introduction this spring.
“He’s a genomic sire and looks to have inherited his father’s allround success,” she said.
He will be available through spring with conventional semen.
“Wilara Lukie is from our most popular headline family and is sure to be in demand,” Ms Galindo added.
For any questions on these bulls or other products, Genetics Australia staff will be on hand at a marquee at the
What is good for your soil is also good for your bottom line
At Greenmate Agriculture we believe that what is good for your soil is also good for your bottom line.
We develop scientifically backed soil and health programs, bringing data and results to the forefront.
Our goal at Greenmate Ag is simple. We want to work with you so you can get the most out of your soils that focuses on microbiology and regenerative agriculture.
We have a deep understanding of soils and biology.
Soil is a living organism, a self-sustaining ecosystem that needs nurturing and care.
Unfortunately, every time we use chemicals and synthetic fertilisers we negatively impact the life of our soil.
We make farming just that little bit harder for ourselves, and this has a flow on effect that further impacts results and profits.
We understand that all products have a role in commercial farming and agriculture including chemicals and synthetics.
However we also understand that we can only damage our soils so much before problems start occurring.
Problems such as disease, pest attacks, poor growing results, low yields, lower quality and the list goes on.
With ongoing support we make getting your soil health back on track easy!
Our friendly team visit your farm, undertake tests and develop a unique soil health program for your unique needs and goals.
Allflex Livestock Intelligence health monitoring applications empower dairy farmers to detect developing health issues in the transition period such as ketosis, DA, metritis and mastitis early on, before they show up in milk or as a serious metabolic problem, and often well before production drops or clinical signs appear.
They also enable farmers to quickly evaluate response to veterinary treatments, for the best-possible recovery and treatment cost-effectiveness.
Using our applications, dairy farmers can make informed and timely decisions regarding intervention and treatment, enabling pre-emptive actions that help avoid deterioration, reduce treatment costs, and reduce or prevent
impact on milk production, and lowering the mortality rate.
Real-time detection and alerts provide actionable insight into individual cows’ health at high-risk times, including before, during and immediately after calving, enabling timely intervention that can save money and provide peace of mind.
Our health monitoring applications also help farmers streamline their fresh cow protocol and minimize disruption to fresh cows’ peace by enabling them to identify and care for those cows that need additional attention.
Our health monitoring applications include Health Report, Fresh Cow Report, Animals to Inspect Report, Distress Report, and Distress Alerts.
The work of dairy farming is changing as more dairies adopt automation to make life easier and future-proof their farms.
How do you want to farm in 5-10 years?
Do you know what automation fits your system?
The team at Lely Center Gippsland is here to help.
Now supporting more than 70 Lely robots locally, they’ve built an expert team of robot technicians and farm management advisors to support customers on their journey to automation.
This year the Center welcomed a new head technician, Chris Neuhauser, who was responsible for servicing over 1,000 Lely Astronaut robots in Europe. They also recently announced Dale Serong as the Center Manager.
“We help farmers identify the systems that will help them achieve their farming goals, then we support them to reach that vision” explains Dale, who has managed multiple corporate dairy farms locally.
Lely Center Gippsland doesn’t solely focus on robots.
Their range of solutions includes automatic calf feeders, feed pushers, cow brushes,
manure collectors, ID collars with heat and health detection and more.
“We work with farms of all sizes and setups”, says Dale, “From herds of less than 100 to more than 500 cows, from once-a-year to year-round calving.
“The results of any technology hinge on the unique factors of your farm, and we can help you navigate all the choices required for the best outcome.”
And it doesn’t necessarily require huge infrastructure changes, even when it comes to robots.
“Most clients add robots to the existing shed and yard. At Neerim North, clients just finished roofing the yard of their rotary dairy and added six robots in there.
Years before that, they tucked robots into an old herringbone dairy with great outcomes.”
The Lely Center Gippsland team will be at the South Gippsland Dairy Expo 6-7 September. Ask them about a free on-farm consultation with Dale to discuss how automation could work on your farm.

Whiteboards
Australian Mapping and FARMap
Managing livestock movements, joining and calving dates, welfare management like drenching and vaccination dates often stretches the memory or leads to a lot of pa perwork at the end of the day.
Australian Mapping owner Sam Baulch has now simplified the entire process with his recently released app, FARMap.
“One of the main reasons I wanted to develop FARMap was for dairy, sheep and beef farmers,” said Mr Baulch. “They normally have a big whiteboard in the shed with the map of the farm and that is their communication tool.” FARMap will either replace or enhance that whiteboard.”
For the past 14 years Mr Baulch has been working with farmers to map their farm accurately and has mapped over 400 farms in that time.
“Great savings can be made by accurate ly knowing the paddock areas and cutting down mistakes made by contractors when they work with a good map.” he said.
Three years ago Mr Baulch started looking into developing an app and subsequently employed an app developer to develop FARMap.
An icon will show on the paddock map where the livestock are, and data can be entered on the go with any device and instantly updated to all other devices on the
The idea is that farmers will be able to map their own farm within the app from a Google maps image, or upload an existing map previously produced by Mr Baulch.
Mr Baulch started Australian Mapping in 2009 after realising many farmers did not have accurate maps of their own farms.
“I saw that a lot of farmers did not have a decent map of their farm, but only had a mud map which was so inaccurate,” he said.
While development has been slower and much more involved than expected, Mr Baulch is still excited to see the app released to the market on computer, IOS and android.
“I was asking my clients what program they used for livestock and paddock record keeping and many told me the programs they looked at were too complicated, and they couldn’t be bothered entering data into the computer when they got back home at night” he said.
The app can be used on multiple devices so it can be shared with everyone on the farm.
Accurate maps enable more accurate application of fertiliser, chemicals and stocking rates, ultimately saving money and resulting in better management of the farm.
Much like an accurate map can save money and time, Mr Baulch expects FARMap will do the same when it comes to audit time for farmers, producing reports in pdf format with the ability to email the report straight from the phone.
“Instead of hunting around through paperwork, farmers will be able to use FARMap,” he said. “It is easy to input data and to produce reports.”
The recently released app will enable farmers to have their farm map on their phone and computer linked to each other and all staff related to their business.
All paddock and livestock treatments and movements can then be recorded with the information always with them and synced with any other person on the farm.

Next Generation Farming
Fresh air, clean water, fertile soil, and biodiversity are prerequisites for healthy and affordable food production.
And, with a growing world population, increasing urbanisation and supply chain\ issues, demand for high-quality food has never been more intense.
Milk and milk-derived products play an important role as valuable sources of proteins and fat for human consumption.
The question remains, though: how do we deliver nutritious, safe, and reliable food for an increasing population with as little environmental impact as possible?
On top of that, it’s critical to empower dairy farmers to manage their operations sustainably and future-proof production in times of tight margins, environmental regulations and increasing complexity.
At GEA, we call this Next Generation Farming. It is a combination of process automation (milking, feeding, manure management, etc.) plus digital management solutions and a comprehensive service.
Our goal is to foster sustainable production, make dairy farming more flexible and make the whole process easier to manage while improving animal welfare.
“We want to pass on our family business as well as a sustainable environment to our next generations.
That is why we choose GEA’s technology. Our local GEA Dealers have all the skill and knowledge to help me find the solution I need.
I don’t need to go anywhere else” said farmer Glen Duncan of West Gippsland , one of GEA’s customers.

Supporting gut health to promote sustainable milk production
Actigen®is a unique product derived from a select strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast using a proprietary process developed by Alltech.
When incorporated into the cow’s diet, Actigen supports gut integrity and overall performance.
Mode of action
It is well known that bacteria are present in the gut; some helpful, some harmful.
Beneficial bacteria play an important role in the breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract.
Part of the Alltech® Gut Health Management program, Actigen is key to building a foundation for performance and profitability in dairy production.
Beneficial bacteria do not interfere with the gut wall and assist in:
l Regulation of cell turnover in the gut wall.
lnCreating competitive exclusion of pathogens.
l Stimulating metabolism of mucus secretions.
lnModulation of mucosal immunity.
Pathogenic bacteria attach to the villi on the gut wall, causing:

Biolink 4 Plants is a family-owned Australian agricultural company. It aims to help farmers become more sustainable and profitable, and helps home gardeners grow their own nutritious food. Kevin (Left) and Graham of Biolink.
In 2018, two Victorian dairy farmers started talking about how they could improve their farms’ sustainability and profitability.
That’s when an idea was born. Linking science and nature – a ‘biolink’ - to find a better solution for Australian farmers.
Using their first-hand knowledge of the land and good farming practices, the Biolink team have formulated a unique combination of ingredients to feed the soil and create a better environment for plant and animal growth.
Biolink Probiotics 4 Plants and Animals makes a range of affordable natural fertilisers, microbial soil stimulants, and animal probiotics.
“We draw our inspiration from the pioneers of biodynamic, organic, and regenerative farming”, says co-owner Kevin Beecroft.
“Unlike conventional fertilisers, Biolink products aren’t just about replacing the nutrients removed from the soil in food and fibre production.
We’re about nurturing the soil using a selection of multi-species microbials to create a carbon and nutrient-rich, sustainable environment for plant growth.
“Designed for use alongside your conventional fertiliser program, they boost nutrient uptake while reducing the quantity of fertiliser needed to produce the same output. The result is a cost-neutral solution.”
The Biolink Probiotics 4 Plants and Animals range of microbial-based products helps in all types of applications including:
l Nurturing abundant pasture growth to feed the herd – reducing your dependence on costly bought-in feed
l Increasing crop yields and plant quality without the need for extra chemical fertilis-
er, which results in nutrient loss and harmful run-off into waterways
l Boosting the on-farm composting process in manure heaps and effluent ponds to reduce waste and create cost-effective fertiliser
l Improving the gut health of livestock to increase nutrient efficiency, lower feed costs, reduce environmental emissions, and increase animal health
“The feedback has been fantastic. Every week, we’re talking to farmers who can’t believe the results of using Biolink products”, explained Kevin.

The unique clear roof – deep litter housing system being utilized on farms throughout Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania & NSW. Come to site 50 to discuss the benefits of this housing system on your property. Farm visits can be organized to advise you on the best shelter design for your property.
The recent completion of a Dairy Shelter at the Foote property near Fish Creek is a fantastic achievement for the family and their workers.
They have completed the project over the past few months, and it is now ready for use by their up-close cows.
Clear Roof, Deep Litter Dairy Shelters contribute to farm productivity by giving greater control over pasture management and feeding efficiency, whilst improving animal health and welfare.
Control of milker’s daily walking, health and comfort gives cows more energy to direct towards milk production.
The shelters give farmers the ability to take control of their herd’s environment in severe conditions and, when combined with better feeding systems, can reduce fodder wastage giving farmers the ability to manipulate stocking rates and rotation length to reduce pasture damage.
Cows or heifers can be kept in the shelters for either very short periods, for instance during heavy downpours or as a total housing system for young and dry stock.
Many farms see the added benefit of accumulated nutrient in the bedding being incorporated into their nutrient recycling program.
Shelters are made from a clear flexible polythene membrane and the deep litter floor can be easily maintained using a regular scarifying process.
Come and visit Simon and David SGDE (SITE 50). We are happy to have a chat or organise a farm visit for interested farmers.
