Spring lawn success Spring is well known as a great time for getting out in the garden and ticking off many maintenance jobs that have stacked up over winter. Many people tend to overlook their lawn though as part of the garden that can also do with some TLC. Here are some tips and hints you can be doing right now to ensure your lawn is in top shape for the warmer months. Weed Control – Weeds are not only unsightly but they complete with your lawn for all the good things – sunlight, water and nutrients. Early spring weed control by either a selective herbicide designed for lawns or a ‘Weed & Feed’ type product will keep on top of any

weeds before they become a problem. Fertilizer – Early spring as the weather improves is an ideal time to fertilize your lawn. As the plant activity increases with longer days and warmer temperatures, adequate available nutrients will help your lawn thrive and look its best. It’s a good idea to feed your lawn every 6 months with fertilizer containing a broad range of nutrients. Oversowing – If your lawn is coming out of winter looking a bit tired and thin, oversowing may be a good option. This also allows for topping up any low spots or bare patches that weeds may have caused. Using quality seed along with good prepara-

tion will ensure success when it comes to oversowing. It is best to trim the existing grass fairly low, add 1-2cm of light, sandy loam soil (more in low spots) across the area then broadcast the seed and fertiliser. Give the area a light rake to incorporate the seed into the new soil and water in. Keep the area damp for 2 weeks until shoots appear, at this stage you can start to water less frequently.
