Wagazine..? What’s tha t?... Well, to all of you haven’t got it yet; it’s a Warriors Magazine! A `Zine which should be just as perfectly ignorant as the Warriors themselves. A marketing too l to fuck your brain. Cause we have ambition s to take over the world, but no fucking clu e how to do it. So why do a WAGA ZINE then? Let me tell you... Cause we’ve go t so many good pictures that never get pu blished anywhere! They should be sprea d somewhere, No? And we also think that we have some sto ries to tell. Or at least so me half-way funny ones… So why shouldn ’t we put together a little nothing with which we hope to bring you the Warriors way of life a little closer? We have nothing to los e, cause if we’re wrong and nothing of the content turns out to be of interest to you.. . Well, then we at least got our ego hype and had a few good laughs while putting it together. It will for sure make our life a litt le bit more interesting and we do hope, that it will also keep you from letting your he ad bang down on the table again.

What’s the hardes t and what ’s the wo rst trick in the vid (of ev er ybody...)? I don’t remember all the tricks in the video, I think it is dif fic ult to give a judgmen t since the video pa rts are so varied an d ever ybody has his way of skating, but in my opinion the abso lute hit is the kata of kung fu which Fabrizi o performed perfectly in my part, and th e second fattest trick is the ‘magnum’ (face of the conquistador) of Mar tino in the open ing shot. With resp ect to the worst part of the video I’d say th at the whole part of M ar tino is a disgrac e! That was a joke, of course: from the fir st to the last of his tri cks you just have no words! He was cursing and shouting really loud and then he just jumps on the rail and does it first try. And the worst is Ma rtino’s face in the intro section.

RISE ABOVE The work of an artist hits you the same way a song hits you when you hear it for the first time. When you see a piece of art you instantly know who you are dealing with You almost can enter his mind at the moment he executed his opus and you travel there with him. Marcello’s style and creative decisions are, in my opinion, perfect, and I have to congratulate him on every new work coming out. I’m always a bit jealous that it isn’t for one of my productions. Marcello rocks. The first time we really met, at one of his art shows at Bastard’s in Milano, the first thing he said when he saw the Warriors enter was: HEY! AT LAST SOMEONE WITH LONG HAIR! SHIT!

WART

Tell me about your childhood. What led you to art? The usual - comics, covers of albums and books, illustrations in books and magazines... everything the illustrated popular culture consists of. Then with time many other influences crept in surreptitiously, but the first motivation for drawing came from those. Where did you’re nickname “Rise Above” come from? It’s the title of a song by Black Flag, a group to whom I am very much attached, not just musically/emotionally but also in attitude.

I love it, I have to make a great effort to remove the Romans from sight, but I maintain that in its artistic and architectural manifestations Rome offers the widest assortment of wonders of the West. Besides a discourse typical of the Accademia di Belle Arti which is pretty obvious, it is a city evocative of monsters, you don’t have to go far to find monsters, dragons, legends, ghosts, tormented souls, obscure symbolism, underground cities, archaic tombs... I have everything at my fingertips. What frustrates me most is that very few young illustrators in Rome really look around and interpret or transmit in their work the gigantic visual/cultural heritage they have underhand. It seems they are all a bit bulldozed by a sterile esoterophilia, to me it doesn’t look like they reinterpret the impulses they get from outside with what they have on hand. The common people are either attached to Rome or have this vulgar view of Rome - gladiators - Duce, or of a caricature by Alberto Sordi, or like tourists in their own city, sort of like ‘let’s go eat downtown where there are the monuments and it’s beautiful’, but they look at it like a nice frame, they don’t dig any deeper. There is so much more to it that not grasping it is really a shame.

Oil paint or Photoshop? Oil - learning how to use it is one of my great dreams. Photoshop is fast, neat and efficient, but it is an ersatz, it is not at all attractive to me. What led you to collaborate with Warriors Skateboards? Are you happy with your projects? Yari wrote me, I believe after he saw some of the stuff I did for Bastard. Yes, I am very happy! Especially because I am making skateboards, this is one of the dreams I had as a little boy come true, and also because Yari is all the time so enthusiastic and supportive of the stuff I design and gives me carte blanche, which always gives the best results.

Did you study art in school? Yes, I went to the Accademia di Belle Arti. There are terrible people in such places, I didn’t make a single friend there. I finished the study course in a sort of autistic state mixed with disgust for all kinds of arts schools. Who’s your favorite artist? This is a complex question, I have - and I have great pain to decide on one - a representative in every field. But let’s say that if not somebody had given me a book illustrated by Gustave Doré I might have done something else!

SIHLSIDE PROJECT This spring something strange happened in Zurich. Somebody actually started constructing something by themselves. You must know that the typical Zurich Skater would never do anything to make a spot skateable. That’s partly due to laziness, but mainly because there are really a lot of spots. If you can’t skate one, you can always move on. However, there’s something about building your own spot that the street kids don’t know about - after you built that shit you feel good. Really good. Cause you actually have built your own spot! And nobody can take that feeling from you. Responsible for this DIY Project are Nicolas Büchi and his friends. Normal guys with normal jobs who just wanted some trannies to skate. Since trannies are rare in Zurich and the skate park project had been postponed for years they thought it was time to do something by themselves. First a quarter, then a wobble was built and now a little pool corner was con71

structed. Before long rumors took their way and suddenly half the town wanted to skate it. Even though it’s just at the beginning and it’s not much more than a quarter and a corner everybody wanted to have a look. Needless to say that such a spot was exactly what the Warriors would love to skate. After all, some of them had also helped building it. So before long a couple of Sessions went down and every time the Warriors came to Zurich a quick stop was made there. It soon became the warm-up and chill-out spot, and after a while a whole bunch of pictures had been shot. The spot, the vibes and the motivation that Nicolas and his friends bring along is just the kind of thing that the Warriors love. So it was no question that we should show the pictures in the first WAGAZINE and ask Nicolas if he could help us out with a couple of his shots and maybe write a couple of words to motivate YOU to start building something by yourself. Cause we need more spots like these!!!

ne can wait a really long time until the city takes a lot of money, starts planning for years and then eventually starts building a skate park. Or you build it yourself. All in all, this project didn’t cost more then 700 Swiss francs. What you really need are enough friends who are willing to help and get their hands dirty. There’s a lot to do, so you’ll need those muscles. And as a motivation the prospect of actually being able to pull a few grinds on a self-made quarter should be enough. Professional knowledge is NOT required. First of all you’ll need a place to start building. If possible, you should find out the owner or landlord. This can be done anonymously at the local land registry office. However, our experience showed us that normally such a project gets rejected. But it can’t hurt to know on whose land your pouring on some concrete. A crucial point for the determination of the place is access to water. If you have the 75

option of building it near a river, fountain or anything where you can get water for free – do it. Cause you want to avoid driving to the local store every hour to get some more bottles to mix the cement. If you don’t have this option, get more water than you think you’ll need, cause you’ll use it all. The basic construction is made of wood. To find the wood is no problem. Just drive by the next construction site and ask for some old material. Otherwise you can also go directly to the headquarters of a construction company. You don’t even have to steal it, because they normally store loads of wood and don’t mind if some old pieces get traded for some coffees. Formwork panels are perfect to build the backside of quarters. The panels should be hard and massive. Under no circumstances use plywood or something like that. The stuff must withstand wind, rain and snow. And possibly dogs, drunks and children. After you have built the wooden construction (which can be at a homies garage 81

or right on the spot), you place it where you consider it placeable and start filling it with rocks, rubble and rubbish. Whatever you find is good. Even dirt. But when using dirt you have to consider that it will settle after a while and holes with air will appear. So be sure to stomp and compress it as much as possible. Organizing a truckload of bricks would possibly be best, but you can use basically everything as long as it’s hard and stable. Next step is to attach armoring iron over the rubble and transition. Cheapest netting wire is enough for this. The stuff you keep your guinea pigs in is perfect. Just hammer in on to the tranny and make sure to not tighten it too strong. Use as many nails as you wish. More is better than less here. And now we’re ready to get the concrete. You should get Portland cement at your local DIY store and mix it with sand and gravel in a proportion of 1 : 3. Adding gravel with a max size of 5mm strengthens the resistance of the concrete drastically. 87

After you have mixed the cement and the sand thoroughly you can add water until everything is more or less wet. It shouldn’t get to fluid though, cause if so it will keep running down the transition and you’ll have problems filling holes with it. One problem you’ll have if you are building your trannies in Europe is the form of the local trowels. Since there are only few round pools in Europe, you’ll have difficulties finding round pool trowels. You’ll need to grab a Flex and cut off those corners of the common trowels you have. Getting a round shape is crucial to form a smooth tranny. Unfortunately we noticed that way too late, so you better believe us. The coping.... Either you buy ready made Poolcoping at companies like PPC or Mystic, or you find something similar. To us it was really important to have real pool coping, even if it would be the most expensive part of the project. This winter we’ll try to burn some by ourselves, but we’re not sure yet how that will turn out 90

. If you don’t want to use real pool coping you can always find something else, like beer cans or, something better, like a concrete lintel which is used to build the fundaments of windows. We used one of those on the first quarter. It’s quite solid and didn’t cost that much. You can always look for other stuff. The most important part is that it’s solid and that you can screw it onto the wooden construction to keep it from moving after the first couple of grinds. Last part would be the color. You can use regular outdoor dispersion, something you’ll find everywhere in any colors. In our case we just wanted a classic pool blue. Now you should have all you need to give it a first start. You’ll get better with every new move you make. Dreamshade are a death metal band from Ticino. They are very young, but their potential is enormous. Even before their first album was out they already had contracts with very important labels such as spinefarm, and straight off one of the big ones like Universal! I know all the members and I must say they are an almost perfect band. They have charisma, are technically the best, keep their feet on the ground, are nice guys, professional and most of all they are ambitious. They believe in the music they make and this will hit right in the face of people who go to listen to their concerts. I believe they are a good example for the youth in a small and secluded region like the italian part of Switzerland, to demonstrate that one can be successful in making good music and exporting it. Their first album What Silence Hides will be out on January 26, and it is set to dazzle! Here is a short interview with them to get to know more about them What’s to expect on the new album? Iko: The sound of the new album is something completely different from our old work and it is also innovative at the same time: it mixes several musical styles and blends them into a single one. Our sound is in constant evolution and every new song earns its modern melodeath sound, which is typical of Dreamshade. What album would you compare it to? If any? Iko: It’s hard to say, What Silence Hides is the result of the work of a band which has many influences from many different genres and bands from all over the world. We put our personal taste and love in these songs. I can state that it’s something completely new, never heard before and have to admit that it isn’t easy to compare our album to another one. 101

Are there any bands or people you look up to in the music industry? Iko: Of course there are, as already said we love every kind of music and each of us does listen to hundreds of bands everyday from which we draw inspiration. If you’d like to know what we listen to check out our website www.dreamshade.ch where you can find our single band member profiles and discover which are our most favourite bands and albums!

What is your relationship with internet? Fella: We believe the internet is a good way to introduce people to music. I mean, what’s easier than find a band you like on the internet, share it with your friends, discover related bands you may like and

WUSIC

103

WUSIC

then follow them. I think everyone who knows what music is uses internet and follows his favourite bands. Am I wrong? How do you feel if your new albums get leaked out onto the Internet? Iko: To be honest we’re not scared about that. Nowadays it is a normal process that each band has to face after few days from the release (and sometimes also many days before!). It is well known that the music industry has been ruined from piracy and sharing activities, and bands must count on their live performance and merchandise to earn enough money to record new tracks and go on with their work. This is your debut album, how happened that you’re already under a Major? Iko: Yes, this is our first full-length. It was a surprise to discover that Spinefarm was interested in releasing our debut album. What happened is that some months ago our management looked out for the right label and the best ended up to be Spinefarm. They’re really concerned about us and we’re really happy about their serious and professional work.

Do you have some videoclips coming out? Fella: Yes, we just finished shooting two new videos for the songs “Eternal” and “Miles Away”. The former was recorded last week by Andrea Todaro, a young film director of our hometown who is doing a great job. We shot the latter one this week end in Wroclaw, Poland. We worked with Grupa 13, an amazing film production company. We are excited about both videos and can’t wait for them to come out. One of them is planned to be on the web for mid January 2011, so stay tuned! What do you think is the future of metal? Do you think it’ll be a little more mainstream? Fella: Well, I think young bands already understood what the future of metal is like, and I believe there are so many bands that are doing their work right. I don’t think metal will be more mainstream, on the contrary, I guess people are beginning to understand better the meaning of this scene.

So tell me about the release of the album. Fella: The new album “What Silence Hides” will be released worldwide on January 26th 2011 through Spinefarm Records / Universal Music Group. We’re planning to play lots of shows after the release date and for sure we’re doing a memorable Release Party in our hometown Lugano, Switzerland.

Death Race 2000 is a 1975 American cult sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Bartel and starring David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone. The film takes place in a dystopian American society in the year 2000, where the murderous Transcontinental Road Race has become a form of national entertainment. 4 couples have to drive in a brutal cross-country car race where pedestrians are run down for points! Kill Kill Kill!

80’s

Stand by Me is a 1986 American adventure directed by Rob Reiner. Based on the novella The Body by Stephen King. Certainly the best movie of boys hangin’ out and growin’ up along the Goonies and IT. 4 young friends set out on an adventure, they travel and go looking for the missing body of a local teenager - found by a gang of older boys. Go adventure!

SCI FI

Dante 01 is a science fiction film by visionary French director Marc Caro. Deep space, at the edge of the galaxy. The future. A new prisoner arrives on top security prison ship and psychiatric research unit Dante 01. Sole survivor of an encounter with an alien force beyond imagining. The story and the acting is just ok actually... but it’s a master visionary lighty psychadelic nightmare of images. The last scene left me one complete minute breathless. Smoke and watch!

HORROR

In the Mouth of Madness is a 1995 horror film directed by John Carpenter. An insurance investigator begins discovering that the impact a horror writer’s books have on his fans is more than inspirational. Probably my all time favorite psychological horror movie, the line between reality and fantasy is almost indistinguishable through most of the film! Go crazy!

MONSTER

The Host ( Gwoemul - “Monster”) is a 2006 South Korean monster film directed by Bong Joon-ho. I deeply love this movie. The monster appear, hunt and act just like in my dreams! The special effects are amazing and the story is not trivial at all! The Host contains elements of comedy and drama typical of Korean movies. I must see for monster fans! Eat me one

DOCUMENTARY

Grizzly Man is a 2005 American documentary film by director Werner Herzog. It chronicles the life and death of bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell spent several summers in Alaska living among and interacting with big grizzly bears! He filmed thousend of hours with his camera and the footage he shot was later found and used for this doc. The guy is completely crazy but the his interaction with nature is unspeakable! No words.. just watch it!

CULT

The Warriors is a 1979 American cult action/thriller film directed by Walter Hill and based on Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel of the same name. What to say. Couldn’t start this Top Hot DVD without THE WARRIORS! If you’ve never seen it you shouldn’t reed this magazine... really. Tony Scott announced a remake of The Warriors, this time to be set in Los Angeles. The movie is scheduled for a 2011 release. I’m a little bit excited and a lot worried about it. Can

you dig it?

EROTIC

Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS is a 1974 Nazi exploitation film directed by Don Edmonds. Ilsa is an evil Nazi warden at a death camp that conducts “medical experiments” to prove that woman can withstand more pain than men and therefore should be allowed to fight on the front lines. If you are easily offended, stay away...for the rest of you out there, this is an excellent example of the kind of movie they don’t dare make anymore!! Erotic is the

new porn!

CLASSIC

Mad Max is a 1979 Australian dystopian action film directed by George Miller. A futuristic post atomic western, Mad Max tells a story of breakdown of society, love, and vengeance starring the then relatively unknown Mel Gibson! Is the apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic movie that started all. And I’m thankful to that, cause I love post-apocalyptic movies! Check also the sequels Mad Max 2 (known in the United States as The Road Warrior) in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. Eat the dust motherfucker!

MASTERPIECE

The Goonies is a 1985 American adventure-comedy film directed by Richard Donner, produced by Steven Spielberg. A band of children from the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, hoping to save their homes from demolition, go on an adventure to find the buried treasure of One-Eyed Willie, a legendary 17th-century pirate. The film I most watched in my life. And half of the time with the warriors family. This movie is about adventure, friendship and everything we love... THE film. 123

Coptains Log 135

When I was going on twenty, after having gone to various school and studied more or less interesting subjects I found myself in the last year of a commercial college. A school that is rather easy and gave me time to skate and do whatever interested me most. There were very few friends at that school, most of the kids had no motivation and probably ended up doing some suit and tie job. The last year was practically a year of internship which I did in a large insurance company. My father is an insurance agent and quite passionate about his work, so I decided to give him a chance. Of course the work and the people I was working with were completely outside my range of interest. During that year I pretended to work for the office and putting in a full days work, but undercover I learned to use editing software, constructing sites, I designed and did what interested me. During that last year of internship I was supposed to write a thesis of about twenty pages to be presented at the end of the year. A work that should have been done in the course of the year, but which I decided, obviously, I would do on the last day before the final presentation. All year long I was monitored by a person responsible for the practical work and an other one responsible for the educational part. The latter was a brilliant attorney and my law professor, with whom we had a relationship of great mutual respect. In view of the fact that I didn’t submit the monthly reports for this thesis and I arrived every morning too late for work with my board, the person responsible for my work (very worried about my way of beha-

ving) considered it appropriate to convene an emergency meeting with me, my father and the educational monitor. In this meeting, after I tried to explain that I would submit the thesis on time and in perfect order, even if done at the last moment, the guy continued to say that my comportment was not admissible in the reality of the workplace and that I would never achieve anything. At which point, after a moment of silence, my professor said with a hint of a smile: LOOK, YARI IN ALL HIS LIFE WILL DO AS HE PLEASES And that is what happened. I wrote the thesis on the day and the night before the exam. I passed with good marks. Three months later, when I was 21, I opened The Joker Shop without any idea about running a business. Now, after ten years, I wake up in the morning, happy to go to work. I am doing what I like. The skate shop, the music, Warriors Skateboards and a thousand interesting projects of which WAGAZINE is the latest. It is great to be doing what you like and what you want. It takes passion and sacrifice. You don’t get rich, and you work a lot. But at night you go to sleep contented. Folks: Take a baseball bat and hit your television set in two. Then go on the internet and -instead of watching some hamster with eyes of an alien on youtube - study, create, produce. And then travel, discover, love and learn. The world is sick and life is short. Think about what you want to do when “you grow up” and then .... DO IT!
