The Warwickshire nightlife scene is popular with students, tourists and residents; and fans of live music, comedy and theatre are well catered for. e r o m d n a s t r Spo We’re proud to offer a wide programme of competitive sports including: rugby, football, netball, hockey, golf, clay shooting, basketball, wheelchair basketball and badminton. Why not join one of our sports teams; we recruit at all levels of ability from beginners to county players. The college also has two Sportmakers, Courtney and Matt, who provide regular exciting opportunities in sport and physical activity, volunteering and coaching, to help our students develop skills for life and enjoy their time at college.

Sporting achievements

• Moreton Morrell have been British Agricultural champions for over six years – taking part in Netball, football, rugby, hockey and clay shooting • Henley-in-Arden sports team represent the college in British College Championships and are recent league winners in basketball

Leisure and fitness classes

We also offer our students a fun range of sports, leisure and fitness classes. Including Pilates, Zumba, circuit training, ballroom dancing, archery, kick boxing and more. Most classes are free of charge to students so why not check them out.

Sporting events

There is a Riding Academy and Club based at Moreton Morrell but open to all students from all centres. Race ways – are you a runner? Race ways are one of the biggest organisers of running events in Warwickshire. There’s discounted entry for our students and events take place on our grounds all year. Athletes’ day – every year we bring our six centres together to compete in track and field. It’s always great fun so come along and get involved. This event normally happens in May. Academy weekend – if you’re a fan of rugby or netball, then this is the weekend for you. Come along for a weekend dedicated to these sports.

Nightlife

Not only can you enjoy the on-campus bars which run popular events such as Bavarian Beer Party, Back to School, Rave and Live Music Nights, but the towns and cities on your doorstep offer a huge choice of fantastic nightlife. Students can choose from sophisticated wine bars and restaurants, to cheesy and trendy nightclubs, traditional pubs and large professional music venues and theatres. So if you’re looking to watch a Shakespearean tragedy, catch a big name music artist, or just get your friends together for a birthday meal somewhere nice – you can be sure we’ve got it covered here.

In fact, they’re designed in partnership with industry so we know we’re up to date with the latest developments and you know you’re learning from the experts. At Warwickshire College we happily put the emphasis on hands-on learning. It’s not always what you know it’s who you know. Luckily Warwickshire College is well known for its strong links with industry and this is clear when it comes to our degrees. We are often approached by businesses who put forward live briefs for our students to work on and we have excellent input from industry on a whole range of things from lessons to master classes and placement opportunities.

We also have strong partnerships with leading universities such as Warwick, Birmingham and Coventry who offer some excellent progression routes and also partner some of our courses.

Bigger isn’t always better!

Take our smaller class sizes for example – they allow you to train and study in a more focused environment. You benefit from more one-to-one time with your lecturer or instructor and find it easier to get to know your classmates. So in this case, smaller is definitely better. The smaller class sizes also allow us to tailor your course to suit you. We can pick up on your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes and work around a learning style that’ll suit you and help you get the best grades you can.

Flexibility is key

Our specialist employer areas include engineering, IT, business, leadership and management, social care, early years, computing, horticulture and more.

When it comes down to it we can all be a bit choosey, and when you’re making a decision as important as this, you need to have the right options available to you. That’s why we offer a diverse range of courses from BA (Hons) to Foundation degrees and HNDs. We also offer the opportunity to study part-time and by distance, helping you earn as you learn, further your career and ultimately enhance your future prospects.

STAFF PROFILE Richard Pearce Dr Richard Pearce lectures in Animal Science and Veterinary Nursing at Warwickshire College. Richard is an animal ecologist, specialising in conservation biology. Studying environmental science to masters level, he then completed his doctoral research on ecosystem ecology, focusing on the role of animal species in the transfer of pollutants from human activity. Richard has participated in field expeditions to Africa and has presented his research on the international conference scene. He is a member of the British Arachnological Society and specialises in spider ecology, with an abiding passion for biodiversity of all kinds. Richard says, “Our courses provide theoretical underpinning

alongside the opportunity to gain practical experience on projects in the ‘real world’, supported by strong industry links. We have fantastic facilities, and a really passionate team of expert tutors who, with small class sizes and lots of contact time, can provide the personal touch that our students really value.”

HND Digital Film and Video Nominated by RTS (Royal Television Society) for an award in the Student Film category. This two-year course introduces and guides students in the craft and technical expertise of filmmaking. FEATURE Students up for top award A short film by students from Warwickshire College was nominated for a prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) Award. The film – Aeternum Vale – described as a romance set in a dystopian future – was made by four students Richard Davis, Miro Pavlovic, Dane Camille and Tom Osborn, on the college’s HND Digital Film and Video course as their final major project. The film took five months to complete, with the students working on every element - generating ideas, research, script-writing, auditions, casting, filming and editing. Upon hearing the film had been shortlisted, Richard said,

“Getting a nomination for something as prestigious as the RTS is a big deal, so I’m really excited for myself and the group to get the recognition for all the hard work we put in.”

Richard has also had success with some of his other work. Nominated in the 2013 Newport International Film Festival with his film ‘BUCK’, and the Celluloid Screams Competition 2013 with his film ‘Happy Birthday’.

Clair believes that Warwickshire College inspired her to explore life as an artist. She says:

“ Every tutor I met at the College has been wonderful; they really care about art and their students. The quality of the course was excellent; we were a small group of students given space to develop. The piece that won me a place at New Art West Midlands 2013 was developed for my second year piece at the college, so it really has provided a platform for my artistic endeavours.” Clair now runs her own business as a professional conservator advising high profile clients on conservation treatments and preventative measures on a wide range of archival material from the twelfth century to the present day. She also gained a first class BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Birmingham City University and is now studying part-time for a MA in Fine Art.

and how friendly it seemed compared to other colleges and universities. The facilities were also a lot more modern. I really enjoyed my course and I got on really well with my lecturers. I was given the freedom to learn and find my own path, but always knew there was support in place if I needed it. “ The friends I made and the trips you could get involved with were a real highlight, as well as the industrial placement year – which as far as I’m concerned was the most important part. The experience I gained ensured I was a strong candidate for the first job I got after graduating.”

Rebecca went on to work at Warwick Castle and completed a graduate fast-track management programme with them. CASE STUDY Russell Guire Course: BSc (Hons) in Equine and Sports Science Russell has set up his own business, Centaur Biomechanics which uses specialist software to analyse the gait of horses, and designs exercises to minimise the risk of injury. Russell also set up Centaur Training and Livery, a purpose built training facility for horses and riders and, in 2011, launched a third business, Position Perfect, providing a range of products designed to improve rider’s position and performance.

FEATURE Sophie’s superfood success Sophie Sidaway’s unique business idea will see the production of the first commercial crop of Juneberries in the UK. Sophie, a HNC student at Pershore College, put forward her proposal for growing the novel fruit crop to the College’s Enterprise Board. The Board gave full support with a grant to purchase and import the initial plant stock from Canada and by making land at Pershore available for establishing the initial crop. Juneberries taste delicious, resembling dark cherry or raisin, with a hint of almond in the tiny, soft seed. They also have high nutritional qualities similar to established ‘superfoods’ such as blueberries with high levels of protein, calcium, iron, and antioxidants. Sophie said, “it was great to benefit from the college’s Enterprise

FdSc Veterinary Nursing Veterinary nursing is one of the most rewarding careers in the animal industry. This RCVS approved course, validated by Coventry University, provides you with specialist training and support from our dedicated team of experienced and qualified veterinary nurses. You would attend lectures and would complete a placement with a registered training practice, giving you a breadth and depth of practical experience and underpinning theory. BSc (Hons) Veterinary Physiotherapy Veterinary physiotherapy is a rapidly expanding profession within the veterinary sector. Our BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Physiotherapy is an excellent opportunity for students wishing to qualify as a Registered Veterinary Physiotherapist whilst studying a Level 6 higher education qualification. CASE STUDY SUE WHITEMAN – DipHE/BA (Hons) Fine Art - part-time Did you enjoy your time here and do you feel you got the support you needed to help you through your course?

I had four fantastic years. All the support mechanisms, within the Fine Art department are exemplary. All the Sue Whiteman tutors get to know the students’ individual needs and this is evidenced by the work outcomes. Even through some very difficult personal circumstances, I cannot begin to describe the help, friendship and support I received from staff and my peers. I am certain it was my art course that kept me sane during the whole process.

What were the highlights for you from your time at college?

As a mature student returning to education after many years, it was an exciting learning opportunity. I found the challenges set and the high level of discussion and research exciting. The major highlight was the opportunity to curate an exhibition in Birmingham of my own fellow students work.

Can you give a brief summary of your career so far since leaving the college?

I have recently acquired my own studio space near home and have started to think more commercially about my art, as well as to develop my practice further and delve more deeply into the academic research opportunities.

What advice would you give to someone who was interested in a similar career or was currently studying in your field?

Go for it – whatever your age. It is fantastic to open your mind to new experiences and for me it was the beginning of a totally new life. Make sure you attend every workshop, visit, lecture – you may not feel you are interested at the moment, but you will undoubtedly find in years to come that you need those skills and historical context.

Did you know that people with a degree earn an average of £12,000 a year more than people without a degree? Our course fees are very competitive and you’ll notice they are much lower than the average university. Plus many students will be eligible for financial support. Since many universities increased their tuition fees to £9,000 in 2012, many young people and families have been worried about the cost of higher education. At Warwickshire College we’re determined to maintain our fees at a sensible level and not raise fees for extra profit. Our business-related courses are the least expensive and have the lowest full-time tuition fee. Subjects such as Computing and Spa Management require higher cost resources and so the fees for these courses are higher. Our highest cost courses – in Engineering and Equine for example – still receive a small amount of government funding so we do not have to charge a higher rate for these courses. No matter what course you choose to study, when it comes to fees you can be sure of one thing - you are getting real value for money. Full-time courses In 2014/15 most first year higher education students will be charged a fee of £6,870 or £5,815 depending on the subject they are studying. You can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of your fees.

For example, if it costs £6,870 for a full-time Foundation degree consisting of six modules per year, then a student taking three modules per year might then pay one half of £6,370 giving a fee of around £3,185. Part-time students can get tuition fee loans in the same way as full-time students but do not have access to grants for living costs. For more information about government support (including for disabled students and students with dependants) and for the application forms for this support, visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance Tuition Fee Loans • Pay nothing upfront! • You can get a loan to cover the cost of your tuition, which you start to pay back only when you are earning over £21,000 a year Warwickshire College Scholarships Full-time students in receipt of a full Maintenance Grant can apply for a Warwickshire College Scholarship of £2,000 in value as part of the National Scholarship Programme. You may choose to pay for your course yourself instead of taking out a Tuition Fee Loan.
