Dear Member I am sorry that this newsletter is quite short, which is down to just how busy things are at the moment. There will be catch-up reports in the next one, together with results of sales and herd competitions. In the meantime, I hope you have all received your notification of the National Herd Competition Winner’s Farm Walk which takes place next Friday 30th September beginning at 2 pm prompt at Great Lizzen, Lansallos, Looe, Cornwall, PL13 2PT. If you would like to come, please let us know for catering purposes. We have over 100 bookings for the 125th Anniversary Dinner at Cirencester on Friday 7th October – but it’s not too late if you would still like to book. The Autumn Show & Sale the following day will bring in even more people we hope, especially with such a good sale catalogue. Council met just a few days’ ago, and one of their more pleasurable duties was to vote to decide the winner of the Agribition Competition. I am very pleased to announce therefore, that Rupert Shinner from Coyton Barton, Devon, will be our sponsored delegate travelling to Canada later this year. The Competition attracted exceptionally strong applications and we hope there will be other opportunities for travel in future years for those not successful this time. More inside … Best wishes, Caroline

TB CONSULTATION There are new TB Consultations currently in process for England, which close on 8th November. The proposed measures include: Wider use of interferon-gamma testing in TB breakdown herds in the High Risk Area, particularly in the badger control areas Increasing the sensitivity of skin testing of cattle traced from infected herds by using the ‘severe’ interpretation, specifically for ‘spread tracings’ from TB breakdown herds Mitigating the risk posed by inconclusive skin test reactors (IRs), by restricting for the rest of their life animals that have tested negative on re-testing, in the High Risk and Edge Areas More effective control on the movement of cattle from one TB breakdown herd to another, to only allow movements where the destination herd is due to have at least two short interval tests at severe interpretation Harmonising the breakdown herds, breakdown herd, place at least 60 of those reactors
scheduling of short interval tests in TB so that when reactors are identified in a TB the next short interval test should take days after removal (rather than detection)
All counties that straddle the High Risk and Edge Areas to be incorporated completely into the Edge Area, those counties being Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire and East Sussex Extension of 6 monthly surveillance testing to additional parts of the Edge Area – see full consultation for detail Other views called for include 4
o Powers to enforce biosecurity measures to reduce reinfection risks o Limiting approval of ‘red markets’ to HRA and Edge Areas o Extension of interactive TB mapping tool If you wish to respond you should do so by 8th November, by e-mail to bTBengage@defra.gsi.gov.uk, by post to Defra, Cattle Measures Team, Area 5D, Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London, SW1P 3JR, or online at https://consult.defra.gov.uk/bovine-tb/ (from where you can access the full consultation)
