intro • feel good campaign • xananas valentine’s menu • protect the human week

So! Welcome to 2010. With a new year comes a new start - a new you. All those resolutions which call for you to get fitter and healthier are definitely worth persevering with. An added incentive is that now is the time to start preparing that beach bod for the summer! Not that I have a vested interest or anything, but Warwick Sport is outrageously good value for money. Think about it - if you were back home and someone said to you that you could have unlimited use of 6 Outdoor Tennis Courts, 6 Squash Courts, 3 Games Halls, a Swimming Pool, Aerobics Studio, 2 Astro Pitches and a 3G Pitch all for the measly price of £40 a year, you would probably ask them to stop pulling your leg and tell you how much it really cost. We are practically giving it away! Ask your friends at other Unis what they have to pay to access all these facilities and they would almost definitely tell you well over £100. Plus, if you want to join a sports club (and we have loads - 75 to be exact), it only costs £4! Want to get fit, want to be healthy, want to enjoy playing a casual game of tennis, football, squash, badminton or basketball? Well, don’t be a fool - join now at www.warwicksport.com. Alex

feel good campaign I’m sure that after the New Year, you made some grand promise about ‘doing more sport’ or ‘eating better’. When people think about ‘looking after their health’, they are normally thinking about their physical health but what about your mental health? There is a fair amount of middle ground between having a severe mental disorder and not, and the activities to maintain your mental health don’t have to be different - simple things such as eating the right food, doing a little exercise and drinking plenty of water can have a massive effect on the way you’re feeling. To this end, we at the SU bring you our Feel Good campaign!

society news and events music theatre warwick presents west side story ‘My only love sprung from my only hate…’ Set on the turbulent streets of 1950s New York, rival gangs the Jets and the Sharks scrap for survival and reputation. Testosterone-fuelled bouts of violence plague the city, and the stage is set for one final catastrophic act to settle it once and for all. Parallel to this, a story unfolds of first love and the journey into adulthood: Tony, the founder of the Jets, is preparing to turn his back on his childhood gang when his heart is captured by Maria. Young, fresh-faced and naïve, she is undeniably a Shark, and the lovers are dragged back into the fray as they attempt to end the fighting. This musical reimagining of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful, tragic and heartbreaking tale of youth, rebellion, anger and love.

warwick chinese society bring you china week One of the largest culture societies on campus is holding a week-long event called ‘China Week’ to celebrate the Chinese Spring Festival in week 5. This event is supported by the Student Union and Warwick international office. Most of the activities will be taking place in the Atrium so make sure you come by daily to see what is going on. There will be other shows and events such as The X Factor. For more information and to find out exactly what is going on, check out www.chisoc.co.uk.

warwick university drama society presents measure for measure In the bombed-out rubble and moral confusion of post-war Vienna comes a production of one of Shakespeare’s darkest and most human plays. The city is falling apart and the Duke leaves his seemingly spotless deputy Angelo in charge to try and bring some discipline to the madness, and to see if Angelo is as perfect as he seems. Into this world of dangerous power comes Isabella, religious and innocent. She hopes to save her brother from execution by Angelo’s harsh new rules. But if the price to pay for her brother’s freedom is her virginity and honour, should she give them up? When no one is what they seem and sex and death fester under the surface of law and order, who is there to turn to?

question time

question time: time off The Sabbatical Team works day and night to support the Union in providing its numerous services for Warwick’s student population. Now, if they had a Reading Week, aside from getting stuck into a good book...

sumaiya I would switch off my alarm and wake up when I want to. I would go away from campus and visit friends in other cities. I would also take time to just be by myself for a while - preferably near a beach.

james Spend the week learning sign language - I’ve always wanted to do it and I’ve never found the time. That or hop on a plane to Hong Kong great food, sunshine, beaches and cheap tailors for a new outfit or two!

Any plan for a good week off should include (1) lots of cooking (2) hanging out with my girlfriend (3) going somewhere exciting. Maybe a local holiday? Lake District, here I come!

alex I would go to the Lacrosse World Championships in Manchester this summer. I would watch England kick Wales’s arse with great pleasure whilst sipping a bevy or two. I would then buy some needless lax gear just because it seemed like the right decision at the time.

I would ideally leave the country; I’d probably go to somewhere in Eastern Europe for a few days and do a bit of sightseeing. That sounds really boring, doesn’t it? I’d pick up some cheap booze to bring back with me though…

andrew As my hometown is a 7-hour train ride from campus, on the rare occasion that I do get a weekend off I tend to stay local. Birmingham is good for shopping, Warwick and Kenilworth have some lovely pubs and Stratford-upon-Avon is well worth a trip!

I would head to the nearest airport and get a ticket to a place I haven’t been before. My only problem is with my jet-set ways I have to travel further afield. Europe? Done! America? Done! Africa? Done! Where next?
