So Reading Week is almost upon some of you lucky students while the rest of us slog away on lectures, seminars and deadlines. It’s not all doom and gloom though, your Union will still be alive, the Sabbs will be here and you can bet anyone away for Reading Week just wants to get back to the bubble. I am taking this opportunity to get your feedback on some things. Firstly: the library - do you love it or hate it? I’m looking for constructive comments. Bigwigs at Kings University London have fashioned ‘The Graduate Pledge’, basically a set of principles they believe graduates need to experience to live successful professional lives. These are:

○○A research-led learning environment

○○Interdisciplinary study ○○A globally orientated curriculum

○○Community engagement ○ ○An environment that

stimulates academic literacy

Let me know what you think about these things. Sumaiya

the green space This December in Copenhagen leaders from the United Nations will decide on our futures. We hope they’ll commit to a suitably radical and binding global deal on climate change that will secure us a better, sustainable world. Or… they could produce a vague and weak treaty that would fail to combat climate destruction. Pretty scary! But there are many ways in which we as Warwick students can campaign for success at Copenhagen. Already there has been a recycling awareness tour, an anti-plastic bags campaign, and a ‘350’ action - see www.350.org. From now until week 10 there will be speakers, campaigns and perhaps most importantly ‘The Wave’: the biggest UK march on climate change, happening in London on 05/12/09. The People and Planet society will be organising a big Warwick group to head down. For more information on this and other green initiatives that Warwick SU is involved in check out the green space www.warwicksu.com/green.

PhotoSoc Critiques Every other Wednesday, Photosoc members and exec critique photos; a fun and friendly way to get better at photography. 5pm, in S0.19 every even week, the best photo wins a free print! Check out tiny.cc/photosoc for each fortnight’s theme. A recent winner is Lauren Stone.

eating@warwick Several of you already have an Eating@Warwick Card but did you know that the card covers not just food, but drinks as well. Yes for every drink, whether a J2O or a pint, you could save yourself 10% by using the Eating@Warwick Card. Not just at The Dirty Duck or Rootes Bar but all across campus including The Copper Rooms. Imagine that, not having to carry around cash with you all day. Whether you want to buy food at Xananas, a magazine from Cost Cutters, books from the bookshop or drinks in the Union all you need is this single card. Top it up online and never have to worry about the amount of lose change in your pocket. Furthermore, the card is free. Make sure you get yours now at www.warwicksu.com/eating.

the new deli results are in... 100s of you voted and your SU listened… we can now reveal the name for the Union’s new deli. The name with a massive 68% of the vote, a resounding winner, is, that’s right The Bread Oven! Obviously that old saying still rings true, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! We are very excited about the opening of our new outlets and are beavering away behind the scenes here at the SU to make sure everything goes like clockwork when the time comes. Watch this space…

normality?

normality? Mid term, mid autumn and now normality starts to settle in. Sabbs get back to hard work after organizing fairs and book sales. Students start taking up other activities from driving school to joining societies. Most interviews for positions across different societies have now ended but the meetings go on. Meetings and socials take place both on and off campus. The Copper Rooms is bursting at the seams with nights to suit everyone and anyone. Between Top B and Hustle, there have been several society events such as our Oriental society’s GLOWOC or Warwick Snow’s Avalanche using the union for their events. There are some things that are now missing: The summer sun, the leaves on the trees and the TES. The nights might have gotten darker earlier but there are a lot of things to look forward to. People say this when normality settles in, but actually this is when things get going. From society events to campaigning, sports clubs to Union events make sure you get involved. One key date for your diary is Friday 20th November - the BBC runs its annual charity fundraiser Children in Need, where people from all over the UK do mad and crazy things in order to raise money for sick and disadvantaged children. The Union will be supporting this worthy cause; outlets will be decorated with Pudsey bears posters and pictures, specials will be on menus and staff will be dressed up in who knows what! Make sure you get into the spirit by dressing up on the day for lectures, join in the fun and if you have already accumulated any loose change down the back of the sofa, bring it in and drop it into the collection boxes and help us raise money for Children in Need. feedback what do you think of the union? We’re looking for a team of mystery shoppers to help us with this project. You will have to visit a service or outlet, either use the service or eat at the outlet and fill in a questionnaire for us.

This isn’t a paid position, though if you fill in 4 questionnaires we will give you vouchers to thank you. But if you have ever thought the Union could be doing something better, or if you’ve ever enjoyed something at the Union, this is a great chance to get involved and share your thoughts with us. To apply please email Ais Reynolds on ais.reynolds@warwicksu.com or call 024 7657 2758.

got something to say? Here at Warwick SU we are constantly striving to improve our services and create an environment any one of you would be happy to call home. Catering for such a diverse student population requires constant reassessment to ensure we are at the forefront of what makes you guys tick. We hope we are getting it right, but if you think otherwise why not tell us what you’d like to see. Equally if there is something that you simply love, get in touch! If you have any suggestions or ideas, problems or complaints, or just general musings, please get in touch and we will see what we can do. Email feedback@warwicksu.com or come and see your Communications Officer, Isaac, on Level 2 of SUHQ.

democracy union council This year’s Autumn Elections period saw a huge increase in turnout from 699 votes to 1,621! A great improvement but only the beginning of what promises to be a record-breaking year for Union democracy. Every member of Warwick SU is entitled to vote in our two referenda periods, Officer Elections 2010 and in polls on the Union website and we want you to get involved. This is your union and you get the final say. Be part of it.

caucuses Liberation caucuses are places for students that self-define into certain categories (LGBTUA+, ethnic minorities, women’s, students with disabilities) to come together and decide things relevant to their groups: delegates to relevant conferences and items to send to them, issues that have cropped up, policy to be discussed etc. If you come under one of these categories, you really should get along to your relevant caucus - it’s a great way to meet people!

○○ LGBTUA+ Caucus: Wednesday Week 5, MR6, 6pm ○○ Ethnic Minorities Caucus: Wednesday Week 5, MR6, 7pm ○○ Women’s Caucus: Thursday Week 5, MR5, 6pm ○○ Students with Disabilities Caucus: Thursday Week 5, MR5, 7pm

seth lakeman Seth Lakeman is a British folk music phenomenon. Imbuing the genre’s classic traditions with a savvy modern-day sensibility, Lakeman has quickly established himself as the 21st century first true folk superstar. Boasting a Mercury nomination for his self-produced debut album and a #8 chart placing for recent LP Poor Man’s Heaven, he is a hugely popular festival draw the world over and packs a live show bursting with charisma. With support from upbeat indie-folkers 6 Day Riot, this is set to be a truly rousing night of musical magic!

We have a real treat for live music lovers this week as we welcome hot-to-trot electro-poppers Soft Toy Emergency to our fortnightly alternative showcase. Coming across like a sassier Little Boots, the band specialise in three-minute bursts of sizzling synthpop that’s designed to get dancefloors bopping and hearts soaring - indeed, you may have already seen the video for their latest single Critical blasting out of the major music channels in recent months. Stick around after the gig for some tasty indie tunes courtesy of the Electric City family, with rock stompers in the attic upstairs at Crash!

Do you wanna know what love is? More pertinently, do you want us to ‘show you’?! If the answer to either of these questions is a resolute ‘yes’, make sure you don’t miss our gloriously daft salute to stadium rock, air-guitar classics and power ballads as the mighty SPANDEX returns. Whether you’re holding out for a hero, searching for the eye of the tiger or are simply content to give love the proverbial ‘bad name’, get ready for the hoot of your life as we bust out the dirtiest and often downright stupidest tracks from rock’s shameful history. You know where you are? You’re in the jungle, baby!
