intro • international women’s week • the latest from your outlets • advantage awards

Spring is finally here. Some of you will be studying for exams and essays due at the end of this term. To those who are working hard now, and others who will be doing so over Easter, I wish you all the best. Been there, done that and survived… just. Make sure you eat healthily, take breaks and get some fresh air. Don’t burn out! In Week 9 we are going to have Referenda with some big issues up for you to decide upon. None is bigger than the policy to ‘secure our Union’s independence’. Others include removing the sponsorship ban, so any club and society can choose for themselves which companies they get money from. In Week 10 we have the final of Battle of the Bands, which is not to be missed. To top it off, we then have the epic battle which is the Warwick vs. Coventry Varsity. They may be our neighbours, but during Week 10 they are certainly not our friends. And no victory sounds sweeter than one with hundreds of fans cheering you on, so make sure you get your tickets to the games and check out the info and schedule on the website at www.warwicksu.com/varsity. Isaac COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

international women’s week 8th -13th march: not just for girls International anti-sexism speaker Jackson Katz will be talking about what makes a real man, what men can do about sexism towards women and more on Friday from 12-2pm in the Atrium. He’s come all the way from America, so drop by for what promises to be a great discussion of modern masculinity and how the media portrays both men and women. We’ve got performances of The Vagina Monologues on Monday and Thursday in the Chaplaincy and CAPITAL Centre. There’ll also be a mock domestic violence trial, talks on women’s roles in social entrepreneurship and debates on the nature of modern feminism, alongside much more in the way of fun events relating to women in our society. Schedules have been on campus since Week 8, or visit the website: www.week9.tk. Don’t forget to buy a ticket for the raffle at the stall on the Piazza, and come along to the bake sale for Coventry Rape Crisis Centre on Friday afternoon or the charity gig by folk band Green Diesel in Leamington on Saturday.

the latest from your outlets the bread oven The Bread Oven is only a small outlet, but it serves a large number of people - roughly 2000 baguettes every week, or 100 every hour. Some of you asked for cheaper lunches in the Big 5 Survey, so we are now offering a range of basic baguettes for just £2.00, and marvellous Meal Deals at just £3.10. Happy days! Have you got your baguette yet?

curiositea The newest tea shop on campus is, by popular demand, now also open at the weekend from 11am - 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Now, if you are looking for somewhere to just hang out, kick back and relax, we have just the thing. Every alternate Sunday, Curiositea will host a special Beats and Bars (next one due Week 9). Curious…?

Every year, we send our best sportsmen and women to do battle against Coventry University. Stepping out to face our arch-rivals bearing the Warwick logo proudly on their jersey, these behemoths of Warwick Sport hold the hopes of all 20,000 students on their shoulders. For one day, all that matters is hitting that tackle, gaining that extra yard, making that crucial catch. In 35 sports we fight for every inch, because we know when we add them all up, that’s going to make the difference between winning and losing.

Your support is crucial - when one of our own has been knocked down, it’s your encouragement that will get him up again. When his lungs are burning and the opposition are closing in, it’s your cheers that help him break away. When one of our own has scored, it’s your roars that send shivers into the hearts and minds of Coventry players and fans alike. Make sure you come support our teams in the most pivotal day of their Warwick Sporting career. We have a reputation to uphold!

Proud to be Warwick

a d n e r e ref are here!

John Sm ith Unive rsity of Warwi ck Stu dents’ Union

The time is upon us when YOU get to decide on your Union’s policy. Referenda usually take place twice a year, and this week we will see some of the most controversial motions in years being discussed.

○○ Removal of Particular Advertising and Sponsorship Bans ○○ Maintaining an Ethical Union by Reaffirming Advertising & Sponsorship Bans ○○ Changing the Way this Union is Run. ○○ Twin with Students in Gaza ○○ Disaffiliation from the West Midlands Area National Union of Students (NUS)

○○ Ethical Banking As you can see, Referenda really do make a huge impact on how the Union is run. Do you think we should remove barriers to sponsorship, or instead maintain the Union’s ethical stance? Should we go one further and bank ethically? What about twinning with students in Gaza? Should we disaffiliate from WMANUS? What about significantly changing the Union’s constitution? All of these debates will vastly transform what your Union does and how it is run, so VOTE!

nus extra offers this fortnight week 9: the dirty duck Make your burger a double for just an extra £1.

week 10: curiositea Upgrade any small drink to a regular for free.

Buy an NUS Extra card today and save money: www.warwicksu.com/nusextra

What to do during referenda week:

○○ Think carefully about the motions being discussed. ○○ Come to The Big Debate at 12noon in The Copper Rooms 1 on Monday. ○○ Voting is open from Tuesday 9am – Friday 9pm. ○○ Results are announced by Saturday at noon. For a full list of motions and arguments (and of course, to vote!) please see www.warwicksu.com/referenda

society varsity Why should it only be Sports where we give Coventry their annual lesson in Warwick’s superiority? New for this year, some of our societies will be showing Cov who’s boss. During the week you can look forward to a Law Society Moot, some music from both wind bands and much more - don’t miss out on the extra chance for some banter with the lesser University in Warwickshire. For full details and to check out exactly what is happening when, don your Varsity Soc(k)s and check out www.warwicksu.com/varsity/socs!

All Warwick Elections are run and overseen by Elections Group. Do you think you have what it takes to run the show? We are recruiting now! elections@warwicksu.com

hustle feat. griminal

Anyone taking a cursory glance at the numerous ‘Albums of 2009’ lists knocking around in recent months can’t have failed to miss the ubiquitous Two Dancers by UK oddballs Wild Beasts. An intriguingly flamboyant romp through the seedy underbelly of British society, the band’s truly unique signature sound is perhaps the most instantly-recognisable display of hooting and howling to have emerged in many a year. Alternately hilarious, over-the-top, artful and delicate, Wild Beasts are without doubt one of the most acclaimed British acts of recent times. Packing a devilish sense of humour which slyly complements their rich, atmospheric soundscapes, they will be setting up shop at The Copper Rooms this week to let their super-lush sounds roam free! Take a few listens to the likes of All the King’s Men and Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants at www.myspace.com/wildbeasts - you may just find yourself giddily seduced by their weird and wonderful ways!

Following appearances in the last few years from Tinchy Stryder, N-Dubz and Wiley, Hustle is proud to welcome another star-in-waiting to the stage in Week 9 - the hotly-tipped grime MC Griminal. With tracks like Invincible and his pounding remix of Cheryl Cole’s Fight For This Love under his belt, you’ll be hearing a lot more of this man in 2010 - don’t miss the chance to catch him before the buzz reaches fever pitch! Check him out at www.myspace.com/griminalmc.

end of term foam party Ah, Easter. Quite aside from the usual round of Bond movies, Ben-Hur and The Great Escape, what could possibly be more satisfying than slobbing out on the sofa dribbling chocolate all over yourself? Actually, we’ll tell you. On the last night of term, the Union will be hosting its first ever FOAM PARTY downstairs in Copper Rooms 1. Choccy-scented bubbles will explode around you as the DJs lash out party bangers all night, with giveaways galore ensuring that you’ll be fully stocked up on Cadbury’s Creme Eggs for weeks to come. This is one event which certainly promises a ‘Good Friday’ indeed! (No, really. You’re *actually* fired this time - SU Pun Editor)

question time

question time: new sabb team mene mene tekel upharsin - Our days are numbered, we have been found wanting and the new Sabbatical Officers are already replacing us in The Bubble. Good things do come to an end. Here is an insight into what their beginnings will look like.

daniel|president Get straight to work! This year’s team of Sabbatical Officers is completely dedicated and it’s time to deliver those manifesto promises. Remember, we are here for you and you can always come to us with any problem - big or small!

chris|democracy & communications Start preparing for the best ever Freshers period and Autumn Elections 2010. Kick-start the online calendar and get all our manifestos online so you remember what we promised to deliver. Oh, and buy a door-stop so my door is always open!

so I’m going to make sure I start pushing for the changes students want from day one. I think we’re going to be a great team!

stuart|finance Get started on my manifesto pledges! Trying to ensure that the Union is good value for students and delivers the services YOU want! It’s an important year and I think our team is going to work really well together.

Run from kitchen to kitchen dropping off important info about the support services the Union provides, and stop to chat with Freshers along the way to let them know who I am, what the Sabbs do, and how every student can get involved.

andy|societies Get working on my manifesto promises of course! I’ve got some great ideas on some new avenues for society advertising and I’d really like them to be up and running before the start of the next year, so I’m gonna get on that pronto.

Turn the swimming pool into an Olympic-standard curling arena, build a snow dome over half of Cryfield and the largest lacrosse stadium in Britain over the other half. Then stop acting the goat and do my job.
