Before heading to The Copper Rooms, can you imagine anything better than having a few cocktails while standing on the balcony of the Terrace Bar overlooking the Piazza? Well, now you can actually do it. Who needs Floor Two of the library to socialise? Now you have the Atrium, a big airy space with tables and benches for you to truly ‘soulcialise’ in. Yes we can!
Late in every Term 2, Warwick has a Go Green Week, featuring workshops, talks, debates, films and creative campaigning on green issues. However, this year we have shifted it to Week 1!
Conservation Day: art competition on ‘what we stand to lose’, gardening workshop, talk and film on rainforests, introduction to our on-campus allotment, plus much more.

Now you can get off the bus and have a student-friendly cup of coffee before heading to your lectures. You can grab a fresh warm baguette with hot fillings from the new Bread Oven. You can bag a tasty cuppa with a full range of scones, cupcakes, desserts and an inquisitive mix of treats at Curiositea. You can have a game of pool with your mates.

It’s here. The moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. We’ve mulled over the build-up for yonks, and now its time to enjoy it. Happy New Year! Happy New Union!
Action Day: From petitioning to human blockades, there are many forms of action - workshops hosted by the direct action groups Seeds for Change and Plane Stupid; creative delivery of our petitions on green education to the University, and debate on the limits of direct action.

the launch party On Friday 15th January the rebuild will be officially opened in a classy, swanky manner. Oh, and did we mention a free party?! Yep… F-R-E-E! Come on down with your flatmates for an evening of fun kicking off at 7pm. Venture round the building, watch student performances, listen to speeches and witness one lucky person become immortalised in stone (well, a plaque) as 1st year student Siraj Datoo officially opens the building. For more info, head to www.warwicksu.com/thelaunch.

your brand new union outlets Term 2 sees the completion of the SU redevelopment, with the opening of 4 new mouth-watering outlets to add to the favourite places you already know and love. The variety and quality of our new offers is amazing: be it superb new cocktails, wines and speciality beers, a divine delicatessen and desserts, a fluffy new range of steaming hot jacket potatoes or an irresistible array of creamy hot chocolates, tempting teas and sensational coffees. Add to this the fact that all of these outstanding outlets will nestle firmly next to Xanana’s and The Dirty Duck within the heart of the SU, and you will soon realise that the Union is once again the hub of the campus with more choice than ever before.
The Terrace Bar offers a stylish, cool, contemporary new socialising space. Overlooking the Piazza at the front of the striking new SU, the bar will offer the perfect place to meet for coffee or cocktails. Offering an outstanding menu of wines, international beers and spirits in addition to alcohol-free cocktails and superb coffees, the Bar will be an amazing space to chat and socialise before entering the new venues.
A home away from home for many of you, The Bread Oven returns in its most exciting form yet. Our very own bespoke sandwich bar and bakery will be serving freshly-baked breads with your choice of fillings from our vast deli.
Offering special Top B cocktails from the start of next term in addition to its very own ‘Get Funked’ event on a Friday, the Terrace Bar will have an understated glamour which provides the ideal place to meet friends old and new.
There will be a daily selection of hot fillings, and we will also offer a range of hot sausage rolls and pizza slices. For the health-conscious amongst you, the menu will include fresh and tasty salad boxes and wraps. All these savoury delights can be included in a meal deal along with crisps, chocolate, cakes, smoothies, yoghurts and fresh fruit. If it ain’t broke…
Our vintage tea shop will greet you at the front of the building, offering a quirky medley of traditional English refreshments in a cool modern environment. The kind of place you can happily laze away an afternoon with a big slice of cake and an indulgent hot chocolate, Curiositea will have something for everyone - fresh pastries and a huge selection of ethically sourced teas will refresh and invigorate the early birds, while night owls can relax with liqueur coffees and hot chocolates. Fresh fruit juices, smoothies and milkshakes are blended to order and complemented by an irresistible selection of sweet snacks unlike anywhere else on campus!
There is no substitute for the freshest, fluffiest potato in the county! Snuggled in the very heart of the new SU Atrium you will find our tiniest, yet bravest addition. What King Edward’s Potato Emporium lacks in size, it will certainly make up for in quality - with an incredible range of fillings to suit every spud-worshipper, our team will be on hand every weekday lunchtime to fill that gap in your tummy without making a deep hole in your pocket. Come and marvel at the small, but perfectly-formed King Edward’s Potato Emporium!

old favourites the dirty duck The hugely successful Dirty Duck returns with its very own ‘duckling’ in the form of the newly opened Snug. Not only will you still be able to enjoy daily carveries and home-cooked specials alongside the superb Duck Menu, but we’ll now see the return of Sky Sports for the avid sport nuts among you. With box-set viewing nights, buckets of wings and chips, beer and wine offers, the occasional mad bout of Fancy Dress and the best Real Ale on Campus (including the introduction of our very own Ale, Duck Soup), 2010 is set to be a quacking good year up at the Duck!

xananas bistro & bar The Xananas crew continues to lead the way with their freshly-prepared dishes and outstanding new menu - from sizzling fajitas to the freshest fish of the day, our team is there to tantalise your taste buds from 9am in the morning. 2010 sees the introduction of some incredible new menu plans, capturing the wonders of One World Week via the delights of Valentine’s Day and the intrigue of their Storytelling Week menu… With a range of wines that is secondto-none, look out for some very special offers to complement every dish.
housing A big talking-point at the start of this term was, quite rightly, housing. I know that some people sorted out their houses last term, but those who waited until now have my praise for being patient and sensible - it really will help you in the long run. On Thursday of Week 1 we’ll be hosting our Housing Day in the Atrium, where we’ll be getting in all the relevant people to answer questions about living off-campus. Our Housing Guide is out in this issue in the Boar, which includes information about what you should be looking for, a list of landlords, and also our housing checklist (invaluable when you’re visiting properties) - pick up your copy now! We’ve also just launched the Housing Hub on the website - a resource just for Warwick students - to answer questions that often confuse people: how the contracts work, what to look for, and what the law says landlords can and can’t do. Check all the information out at www.warwicksu.com/housing!
one world week... ... is nearly upon us! The world’s largest student-run international event, held right here on campus, is only a matter of days away and promises to be the biggest and best yet! Start your journey around the globe with the panache of the Fashion Show on Friday 22nd; treat your senses to a montage of explosive colour and unforgettable sounds on Saturday; explore the completely transformed (and brand new) Union during each of the continentally-themed days; partake in workshops including Jazz Café on Monday and Flamenco on Tuesday… and much more! Get involved with the Sports Fun Day or partake in debate on contemporary, relevant issues with the Forum, then don’t forget to round off your OWW experience with the evening events, culminating in the grand finale of the World Party!

winner of the plaque competition ‘I should be chosen as although I’m only in my first year, I’m definitely going to be involved during the years I spend here. I’m a Union Councillor, part of One World Week and TEDx, publicize FoPal events and play football in the KPMG League. I also attend MUN & Warwick Entrepreneurs events. Plus I’m President of the Liberty Park Halls society. By the end of my degree, I’m hoping Warwick will be a part of me, and I’ll be a part of Warwick, and having this will spur me along my cause!’

the grand opening
electric city
You know it. The time is upon us, as all those long months of waiting finally pay off and we get to unveil our brand new Students’ Union building in all its glory.
A new year brings a new look for Electric City, a club night so cosy that you wouldn’t be surprised to see Jim Royle set up shop in the corner and proclaim ‘Lady GaGa, my arse…’
Whether you want to relax in the Terrace Bar, sup on a hot chocolate in Curiositea, shoot some pool or get down to some serious tunes in The Copper Rooms, this is your chance to be part of the next phase in our Union’s history.
Contemporary and classic indie & electro tunes are the order of the day as residents Rick and Holly invite you to have a little ‘D.A.N.C.E.’ in the comfort of the EC family living-room - whether you’re a jangly Smiths fanatic or prefer to get your squelch on to the likes of Justice and The Knife, there’s something for every breed of indie kid at Electric City. Come along and check it out!
Best of all, entry is, of course, completely free all evening. Hopefully this will be the first of many great nights on campus for those of you who’ve been waiting so patiently to see the fruits of our labour - we certainly can’t wait, and we look forward to seeing you there!

pressure feat. pendulum ‘Who’s this Pendulum, then?’, some wazzock asked me the other day. Of course, he’d been living on another planet for the last few years, and needed filling in on the exploits of a band responsible for some of Warwick’s biggest anthems - Slam, Blood Sugar and Propane Nightmares to name just three. Whether it’s mixing Metallica with the Prodigy or simply tearing the place a new one with their own selection of club stompers, a Pendulum DJ set always offers a guaranteed recipe for wall-shaking beats that are guaranteed to get the house rocking as few others can. Add to that a tasty line-up featuring the likes of Nero, MC Verse and Glitch Mob, and you have another winter winner from the Pressure crew!

term 2
It’s that time of year when people make grand promises about ‘going to the gym more’ or ‘doing more sport’. When people think about looking after their ‘health’, they are normally thinking about their physical health - but what about your mental health? There is a lot of middle ground between having a mental disorder and not. Here at the SU, we’ve we’ve got loads of tips and tricks that could help to keep you fighting fit, which will come along in the shape of our Feel Good campaign later this term.

the crystal ball: term 2 Throughout Term 1, students have been working very hard behind the scenes to create some fantastic student events. Looking into my crystal ball, here are just some of the amazing things that I can predict will be happening this term…
one world week There’s not much to say about One World Week that hasn’t already been said. The largest international student-run event is now celebrating its 15th year - think of it as one remarkable week-long birthday party. 22nd - 30th January | www.oneworldweek.net
the economics summit The Chief Markets Strategist from RBS and the Chairman of the International Business Advisory Board at HSBC are just two of the great speakers coming to share their knowledge. Add to that people flying in from across the world from places as far as Japan and Kenya, and you have yourself a truly global conference. 19th to 21st February | www.warwickeconomicssummit.co.uk
If you think you have what it takes to be a star, then this is the show for you. Whether you’ve sung in several shows on big stages or just to yourself in the shower, if you think you can make it to the top then come along! 19th February | www.warwicksu.com/xfactor
real ale festival To beer, or not to beer? It was never really a question since the answer is, of course, to ale. Some people spend their lives travelling around to sample different types of beer, but in Week 7 you get stay put and have the drinks come to you. The Copper Rooms become Beer Cellars in what is the biggest student beer festival in the country. 2nd - 5th March | realale.uwcs.co.uk
If you enjoy dressing up in a tux or cocktail dress and wolfing down three-course meals, then this is your term. Throughout Term 2, several glamorous events will be taking place. It’s time to SUIT UP!
elections Yup, the days of the Sabb team 09/10 are numbered. Soon it will be up to you to decide on the next set of leaders to represent you and run the Students’ Union. In Week 7, you vote to decide who will replace us!
referen dum This is the highest decision-making body that we have. When something goes to a referendum it does so because it is so important that everyone needs to have their say. During Week 9 it will be your chance to do so once again!
