the bubble issue 48|10.05.10 -20.06.10
intro • feel good campaign • warwick su board of trustees • the library
So it’s that time of year again, the joys of Term 3 exams! I’m sure most of you will agree that the year has just flown by. For all you Freshers it’s the end of a very eventful year and loads of work. For others, it’s just the end of another year and for Finalists, it’s the close of another chapter. Don’t work too hard, take breaks, do plenty of exercise (releases endorphins and de-stresses you), eat properly and sleep. In my experience, exams tend to go better if you look after yourself. Remember, the SU is here to support you in anything you need us for during this stressful time between the Student Advice Centre, Sami and myself we should be able to help. This is also the last Bubble from me, so with that I say to all of you: thanks for a great year, good luck with exams, the future and everything else. For those of you sticking around, make the most of your time here, get involved with as many things as you can - make your ‘student experience’ a memorable one. For those of you who are leaving, remember all that you learned here and make sure you don’t forget us. Sumaiya
feel good campaign Did you know that coffee could make you more tired, or that bananas can make you happier? How about the fact that exercise can wake you up, or that studying outside could calm you down? Between Weeks 3 and 7, our Feel Good campaign will be rolling itself out again to make sure everyone gets through the next few months with as little unwanted stress as possible. We’ll be providing you with practical hints and tips to make sure you realise how changes to a few simple things (such as diet, caffeine intake, sleep patterns and water consumption) can have a massive difference in terms of your happiness and mental well-being. For example, during stressful periods, people often fall back onto unhealthy ‘comfort’ foods and easy-to-cook ready meals. However, they are exactly the times when it’s important to eat and drink well! Health professionals nowadays are of the ‘you are what you eat’ school of thought; the food you eat and the way you feel are inextricably linked. Science has proven that certain foods are rich in pharmacological substances that can be as good as drugs your doctor could prescribe to help fix simple ailments. Eating a balanced, healthy, moderated diet will improve your immune system and should keep you in good health. A stall in the Library will give away freebies along with a wealth of advice & info to ensure you get that Feel Good factor before Summer rolls around.

warwick su board of trustees Warwick SU is looking to recruit a number of students from all sectors of the student community to join the Board of Trustees, an exciting and challenging opportunity. We need students with a variety of skills to help drive the organisation forward to a stronger, more confident position with increased credibility among our members. Visit www.warwicksu.com/news/article/14385/2715 for more information, or email the Governance & Finance Officer, Andy Perkins, on Andy.Perkins@warwicksu.com.
library - 2nd most visited building on campus You are surely all familiar with the Library which is 2nd only to the SU in terms of popularity. Whilst the library is open every day between 08am until 02am don’t forget that the Learning Grid is open 24 hours a day and there are several other computer work stations around campus that you can use. If you are unsure how full the Library or any other area is likely to be, you can now use www.seats.warwick.ac.uk to give you a live update about how many available seats there are. This will save you time walking around looking for a seat that might not exist!

During the third term is when you need the most support. There is a whole range of ways that the University and SU can help you. You can always talk to your personal or resident tutors. Besides them here are two other great ways to get support, advice or just have someone listen to your issues.
warwick su student advice centre There are many issues that could be facing you these days. They could range from your course, lectures or personal tutors, landlords, and so on. The good thing about the Student Advice Centre is that since they receive several thousand enquiries a year, they have experience in dealing with all sorts of issues.
summer’s here… Our Summer Menu is here and, oh my gosh, there’s some tasty treats. Remember what was most exciting about going swimming when you were young - Slush Puppies! Well, we’ve brought them back! Oh yes. But no blue tongues or excessive e-numbers, these slushies are made from 100% fruit juice & are the most refreshing thing, we think, ever.
They are located on the Second Floor of SUHQ and are staffed by four professional advisors, who work closely with the Welfare Officer (Sami Wannell) and the Education Officer (Sumaiya Khaku).
nightline Nightline is a student-run, confidential, and non-judgemental listening service. This means you can stop by, call or email them for any reason and they won’t judge you or tell you what to do.
We’ve also turned all our favourites cold, with iced lattes, mocha frappes and iced tea. Not to mention some other classics - Coke float, anyone?
Nightline is there if you need someone to listen to any of your concerns whether it is exam pressure, a fall out with friends or issues back home.
vintage chic… Due to its popularity, the vintage fashion fair is back! Browse through original vintage clothing & accessories from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, or ponder your purchase over a cuppa and a slice of cake. It’s the last Monday of each month, so your next chance to grab a bargain is from 4pm on Monday 24th May. Get it in your diaries now!
beats and bars… Spend a lazy Sunday afternoon listening to a selection of chilledout acoustic sets from with some seriously talented musicians from 3pm - 6pm. Head over to relax for a few hours with your friends and a big frothy coffee, or if you’re still suffering from the night before our smoothies work small miracles for hangovers.

example We’ve been following the career of this plucky young upstart ever since he first emerged on the scene, and now his time has well and truly come. Graduating from his position as the wittiest man in UK hip-hop to a fully-fledged chart star with lashings of style, EXAMPLE returns to the Union with 3 massive hit singles under his belt and a stonking new album in the works. Having wowed audiences here last year supporting The Streets, he now returns as a star in his own right to perform new material and old favourites from debut album What We Made.

question time
question time: ghost of exams past The Sabbatical Officers have 22 years of exams at Warwick combined between them. They have been there, done that and seen it all. We asked them, from what they have done, heard or witnessed here at Warwick or previously in their student years....
sumaiya It has to be the Extension Paper for Year 9 English SATS. Our invigilator fell asleep and, since there were only about five of us in the room anyway, we just ended up passing notes to each other during the exam. Our invigilator was the Principal of the school.
james A housemate from my first year left an (impossibly hard) exam after about 40 minutes, and by the time it finished he had already created a Facebook group complaining about it and invited everyone to it! Good to see someone’s got their priorities right…
One of my friends knew he was going to fail one paper so he decided to do so in spectacular style by turning up drunk. Never a good idea. He scored 3%, and has no idea where those marks actually came from. Less than optimum.
alex Second year Econ 2, I had a wheezer next to me. Every inhalation sounded like the last breath of a 40 a day smoker. It was one of those things that once I noticed it, it drove me out of my mind. He should have just stopped breathing...
I have seen everything from people realizing that they were in the wrong exam after it had started to people break down in tears and others leaving a 2 hour exam after 40 minutes because it was too easy. Tip: Read ALL the instructions.
andrew I was in the middle of the room of one of my most important exams and it was so silent you could hear the clock tick. Well that was until my phone started ringing loudly as I forgot to turn it off. Let’s just say I was the centre of attention for a while.
A friend of mine walked into a 3 hour exam with only 30 minutes left on the clock because she decided to take a short nap in the afternoon and overslept. Considering the amount of time she had left, she did pretty well.
