‘FILM INDUSTRY LIKE A BASKET FULL OF CRABS’
John Abraham says he didn’t push his film’s release as other filmmakers wouldn’t have postponed theirs

D
emonetisation has left many filmmakers scrambling to postpone their movie releases, but not actor-filmmaker John Abraham. The 41-year-old released his film Force 2 last Friday, as scheduled. “As a producer, you have to understand that after your PHOTO: WASEEM GASHRO O/HT
film releases, there are 20 other films releasing in a domino effect. Will everyone oblige your film and push their films by a week? No. Everyone wants to be safe here,” says Abraham. He adds, “Our industry is like a basket full of crabs. So, even if one is trying to get out of it, they will pull you back.” But wasn’t he concerned about his movie’s fate at the box-office? Abraham replies that he has come to terms with the fact that the industry is going through a lean phase because of demonetisation. “Everyone knows that it has affected things. I’ll not lie and say that it won’t impact the film. It will, and considerably. It will especially affect single screen theatres because they deal mostly in cash. Right now, the common man would want to spend cash on basic necessities rather than buying movie tickets.” he says. “We are not here for the numbers anymore, but to entertain them. So we decided to stick to our release date and we are confident of our film. I am not nervous at all.” n

girl loves her diamonds, but what a woman loves is rarity, preciousness and pure gemstones to be cherished forever. VSB Jewels by veteran jewellery designer Vandana Bhargava, and her son Varun Bhargava aim to bring forth purity in jewels and a mix of old-world charm and modernity in design. “We source our gemstones from all over the world and we like to keep their preciousness intact. This year, in our couture collection, we have added beautiful brooches for men and women, and maang teekas, jhoomars in gold and

silver, with delicate filigree work,” says Varun. The designs range from couture jewels to statement, stand-alone pieces. Ivory-hued opaque pearls, ocean-blue sapphires, blood-red rubies and diamonds — each creation is studded with gems from around the globe. The design duo also believes that the exclusivity of their pieces are evident in the months, even years, that go in the customised production. Hrithik won’t react on Kangy issue: Basu Monika Rawal
R
ecently, actor Hrithik Roshan’s legal team refuted the claim made by actor Kangana Ranaut’s lawyers that the fake id legal spat between her and Roshan was over. Now Ranaut’s lawyer, Rizwan Siddiquee has labelled Hrithik ‘desperate’. “Mr. Hrithik Roshan and his team are again desperately trying to salvage the situation, and in frustration are making ridiculous claims that we’re spreading rumours among media, with regards to the police’s findings,” Rizwan said in a statement. Around a month ago,
Ranaut said on a radio show that ‘Hrithik would’ve been nowhere if not for his famous parents.’ The issue snowballed with even more offensive remarks and legal cases slapped at each other. It’s unclear, however, why Roshans have been mum all this while. Filmmaker Anurag Basu, who’s worked with both in Kites (2010), says, “I know Duggu (Hrithik’s pet name). He won’t react. It doesn’t take a lot for Kangana to go to the media, but it does for someone like him.” Basu adds, “She doesn’t believe in picking up the phone and clearing the air. She wants to talk to the media

about everything. Yeh uski aadat hai (It’s her habit).” Filmmaker Kunal Kohli, who directed Hrithik in Mujhse Dosti Karoge (2002), also sides with the Roshans. “Rakesh Roshan is a very noncontroversial person. Hrithik is also like that – sincere and hardworking. So for them, these things are like water off a duck’s back,” quips Kohli. n

f you truly desire something and believe that it will come to you, it will: This was the essence of Rhonda Byrne’s bestseller, The Secret. In an exclusive interview, the Australian author talks about the Hollywood movie being made on the book, and if she’d like a Bollywood connection to it. Byrne’s book is celebrating its 10th anniversary, but its controversial concept attracted a lot of mockery. “Whether you believe in it or not, if you’re happy, you attract happiness,” she says. “Everyone has their own opinion. I’m okay with that.” The book’s “be happy to attract happiness” concept makes one draw similarities with Indian beliefs about positivity and good karma. But Byrne says that though
her research revealed that “there might be some relevance, it’s not obvious”. As the conversation veers to India, she says, “I wanted to visit India even before I wrote The Secret. But work always comes first. I do love Indian films, though.” She adds with a smile, “I know that a lot of Bollywood actors have used my book to become big.” We fish for names, but in vain. Instead, we ask her if she’d like a Bollywood film to be made on her book. “Actually, there’s a Hollywood flick being made on it. It’s about a man in his 40s, and a single mom with three kids. Remember Darcy from Pride and Prejudice? He’s like that,” she says. “I’d love Hugh Jackman to play the part. He’d be perfect! He is such a beautiful human being.” n
