WHO ARE WE?
On a sunny, summer day, surrounded by some of the best fishing in Northwest Wisconsin, it is easy to see why Birchwood is known as the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin. First stop? Take a picture with the giant bluegill at the edge of town, of course! The area offers endless fishing opportunities. A local favorite for fishing, canoeing or just a day of exploring is the Sawmill Park area just to the north of Birchwood. The area offers a high density of glacial lakes, primitive camping and two canoe portage routes. In addition to the fishing opportunities, Birchwood is also well-known for their vast ATV and snowmobile trail systems. Easy trail access to lodging, dining, and gas make Birchwood a great entry point for exploring the area trails.
ENTER TO WIN! Catch the Compass & you could be entered to win an authentic Washburn County giveaway at the end of the season. How do you play? It’s easy...as you’re flipping through the pages of the Visitor Guide, be on the lookout for a compass like the one pictured here. Once you have found all five, go to WashburnCounty.org/entry and submit your answers to be entered to win. Your entry must be submitted by November 1, 2020; restrictions may apply, see website for details. Happy hunting!

SPOONER
From a quaint downtown, rich with railroad history that paved the way for Spooner, to one-of-a-kind festivals and events, and must-see attractions. Not to mention the town is the home of the Spooner Rodeo, Washburn County’s only brewery, eclectic shopping, Railroad Park & the Railroad Memories Museum, recreation of all sorts, the World’s Largest Musky & Walleye Fish Hatchery, and so much more... there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy in the Spooner area year ‘round.
SHELL LAKE
Imagine a downtown just a block away from a sparkling 2,600-acre lake, public beach, park, bandshell, and campground that is the enchanting community of Shell Lake. Now add a historical museum, art gallery & creative zone, live music, a community theatre, and delicious dining options. It all comes together to give you the perfect community where things are just a little bit slower paced than that big city lifestyle. Enjoy the arts, take in the natural beauty, shop, eat, and rest your head, all in the small town of Shell Lake.
SPRINGBROOK & TREGO
Located along Highway 63 between Spooner and Hayward, the towns of Earl, Springbrook and Trego offer incredible opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The Namekagon River: Wisconsin’s Moving National Park flows right through all of these communities. The river offers excellent paddling even for those less experienced, fishing, camping, hiking and a peaceful escape into the natural northwoods beauty.
MINONG
Located in both Washburn and Sawyer counties, Stone Lake is a small treasure with a big heart. Stone Lake’s unique shops, incredible restaurants and sparkling lakes welcome visitors throughout the year with their Northwoods hospitality. This is especially evident in the fall when Stone Lake hosts their annual Cranberry Festival with marsh tours, arts & craft vendors, krate box derby, parade, and delicious cranberry treats. While Cranberry Festival might be the most popular time of year in Stone Lake, you won’t want to miss exploring the beauty of the area lakes year ‘round. From its namesake, Stone Lake, located right near the downtown area, to Big Sissabagama and Sand Lake, well known by local anglers, there are plenty of fun days on the lake to be found.
If you’re looking for a secluded Northwoods vacation, be sure to check out the Minong area. Wellknown for its vast ATV and snowmobile trail systems, the area offers access to lodging, dining and gas directly from the trails. Minong also offers many fishing opportunities in the area lakes, including a Kids’ Fishing Pond on the east end of town. Home of the Jack Link’s Aquatic & Activity Center, there’s always something fun happening in Minong!

Long Lake, which stretches 19 miles and reaches depths of over 70 feet, is known as the Walleye Capital of Wisconsin. One of the Sarona area’s featured attractions, Long Lake offers several resorts, bait shops and restaurants. The clear, spring-fed water keeps visitors coming back to Long Lake year after year, generation after generation. Sarona is also home to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, a 600- acre nature preserve, with over 13 miles of hiking trails, including the famous “Bog Trail.” Hunt Hill offers nature programming for the whole family and provides the perfect location to explore the beautiful wildlife habitats of Northwest Wisconsin. The Long Lake & Sarona area also offers excellent golfing, miles upon miles of ATV & Snowmobile trails, and incredible fishing opportunities.

PLAY: THE ARTS
You’re wandering through a quaint downtown in Northwest Wisconsin when you stumble upon the most adorable art gallery. Who is the artist behind all of these amazing ceramics, you ask? The odds are good that when you’re in Washburn County, the artist might just be the shop owner themselves! It seems as though everywhere you turn in the area, you’ll find incredible art, from galleries featuring local artists to mosaics and murals decorating the communities. Here are a few must-stops for you to check out while you’re in the area:
1
THE POTTER’S SHED - You know this art stop will be good when even the outside of the building is a work of art. Enjoy the gallery, live music or even create your own masterpiece in the creative zone.
2 3
10
SHELL LAKE MOSAICS - As you wander around the beautiful lakefront community of Shell Lake, you’ll want to take a look at the stunning murals around town. A mural walk brochure is available at the visitor center in Spooner.
SPOONER MURAL - At the corner of Walnut and River Street in Spooner stands a mural where for more than 80 years a two-story wooden building stood. The mural depicts the Corner Tavern and the redhead in the front is none other than one of the owners, Aggie, commonly referred to as “that redhead.”

4
DOWNTOWN SPOONER GALLERIES - Several art galleries call downtown Spooner their home. And yes, you’ll find many of the owners/artists right there in the gallery. As you’re wandering through the galleries, be sure to look up at the ceiling as many of the original tin ceilings have been exposed and they are truly a work of art!
5
ART & CRAFT FAIRS - You can’t get much closer to great art than at one of the local arts & craft fairs. What’s so great about an art fair? Not only do you get to view and purchase amazing pieces, but likely you’ll be able to meet the artists themselves and learn about how the piece was made.

NAMEKAGON RIVER: WISCONSIN’S MOVING NATIONAL PARK Washburn County is home to approximately 45 of the nearly 100 miles of the Namekagon River: Wisconsin’s Moving National Park. With nearly half of the Namekagon flowing through Washburn County, it's no wonder why the area is a popular stop for folks visiting this little known national park. A northern tributary to the St. Croix River, the Namekagon is a 95-mile long river protected under the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The Washburn County stretch of river begins between Hayward Landing and West River Landing and continues through Trego to Fritz Landing. Most of the Namekagon is undeveloped, offering a genuine wilderness experience to kayak, canoe, tube, or fish. The riverbanks are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles and blue herons, while overhead, eagle and osprey can often be seen. The river is classified as Class I-II rapids. Washburn County offers six outfitters, over 30 river-access campsites, and several resorts & campgrounds along the river. While in the area, stop into the Washburn County Visitor Center for: • Namekagon River trip planning assistance • Birding Backpack Rentals • Junior Ranger information • Namekagon River maps, paddling guides, angler guides & more • Lodging, Dining & Attraction information

BIRCHWOOD AREA CANOE ROUTES Washburn County has two primitive canoe/kayak routes in the Birchwood area, six miles north of Birchwood. Both routes are in a primitive area with little to no development and provide a unique opportunity for a quiet, back country experience. Many refer to this area as their “mini boundary waters” due to the amount of glacial lakes and the solitude that they find when exploring this little-known gem. The canoe/kayak route areas lie within heavily forested, rolling topography with a high density of small glacial lakes. These lakes are land locked deep soft water lakes with steep banks and wooded shores. Bass and Panfish are abundant. A canoe portage and trail system has been marked to guide canoeists. FUN ON THE FARM: AN AGRI-TOUR WEEKEND IN WASHBURN COUNTY Wisconsin has long been known as “the dairy state,” but the agriculture industry offers much more than just dairy. Here are some of our favorite spots to learn more about the agriculture industry and how our hard-working local farmers have taken their farms to the next level. FRIDAY: • First stop, Bashaw Valley Farm & Greenhouse where you can buy everything from grass fed beef to hand picked berries. It’s as farm fresh as you can get! • After your trip to Bashaw Valley, take a peaceful country drive to Pine Brook Farm, a restaurant serving up home-cooked food, locally raised grass fed beef and bison; and pasture raised pork from Chickadee Hills Homestead. This restaurant is located in a 65 year old farmhouse on 85 acres of picturesque farmland. SATURDAY: • Eat like a local. Head over to River Street Family Restaurant where you’ll find a large breakfast menu with specialties like Tyler’s Belt Buster. Just be sure to leave some room for your next stop. • After your awesome breakfast, take a wander in downtown Spooner where you’ll find the Spooner Bake Shoppe, established in 1952. You’re sure to find some home-made goodies here that will tempt your taste buds. • Travel just east of Spooner to the Spooner Agriculture Research Station & Display Garden. The garden is open during daylight hours and is home to perennial and annual display gardens, an enabling garden, themed vegetable gardens and displays of small fruits, grapes and fruit trees.

Please help us keep our waters clean! Washburn County boaters are required to use a decontamination station, if available at a landing, to clean off their boat, trailer and equipment. This measure helps prevent the spread of zebra mussels and other potentially invasive species which have been found in Northwest Wisconsin lakes. Thank you in advance for respecting our lakes to keep them clean for generations to come.

Family vacations are fun. Traveling in the car with the kids yelling “are we there yet”, is worth it when you pull up to your cabin, walk down to the lake and feel the stress of “real life” melt away. Let the fun begin. Burned s’mores, tipped canoes, dad belly flopping off the end of the dock, little Lucy kissing a fish... This. This is how memories are made. Watching the sunset while the kids try to catch frogs together. A peaceful cup of coffee with the sound of a loon on the lake. This is why we vacation in Washburn County.

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY ON THE LAKE...
ALL DAY! • Because putting your kid on a tube behind your boat and trying to splash them is normal in Wisconsin • You never know when you’ll experience your own fishing tale to tell to the grandkids someday. • It’s hard not to laugh when your husband tries stand up paddleboarding for the first time and it ends in a...SPLASH! • Drinking wine on a pontoon while watching a northwoods sunset. Need we say more?

BIRDING IN WASHBURN COUNTY With its diverse lands and waters, Washburn County is home to an assorted population of birds, both migrant and resident. This makes every season in Washburn County an adventure for birding!
While a lot of bird species leave Washburn County once the snow flies, visitors can still enjoy birding by observing the hearty Chickadee who is a year-round resident, listen for the hoots of a Barred Owl, or join the masses who go in search of rogue Snowy Owls who occasionally make their way South when the winters get long. Once spring arrives, Washburn County becomes a pathway for a variety of migrants. Some of the species to watch for include: the Eastern Bluebird, Common Loon, and Osprey. When summer finally arrives, the woods, waters, and open lands are bustling with colorful species like the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, Scarlet Tanager and a large variety of warblers. During the fall, it is nearly impossible to miss the sight of a Wild Turkey, migrating Sandhill Cranes or observe flocks of Dark-Eyed Juncos gathered on the ground around a bird feeder. Birding can be done anywhere, but a few notable places in Washburn County to observe birds include: • HUNT HILL AUDUBON SANCTUARY, in Sarona, where visitors can explore 13 miles of trails around glacial lakes and through meadow, forest, bogs, and marsh. Notable species at Hunt Hill include the Golden-Winged Warbler and the 20-house Bluebird trail. • NAMEKAGON BARRENS, in Minong, is a globally significant property composed of pine/oak barrens. The Sharp-tailed grouse, a native prairie bird, is found only in isolated areas of the state including the Barrens. Get up before dawn and head to the Barrens in the spring for a chance to observe the entertaining mating dances of the Sharp-tail. • TREGO NATURE TRAIL, in Trego, is a 3.5 mile trail that wanders through forest habitat and along the Namekagon River, a National Wild and Scenic River. This trail offers opportunities to hone your birding by ear skills as many of our forest birds are heard more than seen. • OTHER GREAT LOCATIONS FOR BIRDING: Stone Lake Wetland Park, Beaver Brook, and the Ice Age Trail Birding is a great activity for all ages and abilities. If you are new to birding, or trying to get that person who is always attached to their phone, then consider one of these great birding apps: • Audubon Bird Guide: North America • iBird Explorer Pro • Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab of Ornithology Whether you’re adding to your life list or looking for a leisurely bird watching opportunity, Washburn County should be on your list!
