Thank you to the Port of Shelton for Your Support The Mason County Fairgrounds are located on property owned by the Port of Shelton. In fall of 2009 when the County terminated their lease the fate of many local events were placed in the hands of the Port. Since then the Port has been working with event organizers for Oysterfest, GHKC All Breeds Dog Show, and the Fair to help the local community search for and establish a permanent location for the fairgrounds. The local community applauds the staff and leadership at the Port for their foresight and assistance. The Port of Shelton is a municipal corporation governed by a three member elected commission. It was established in 1948 to enhance the economic vitality and quality of life for the citizens of Shelton and Mason County. In simple terms -- the objective of the Port of Shelton is to attract corporations that will provide viable long-term jobs. Businesses seek locations where they are wanted. A community’s willingness to accommodate business development is measured by the available infrastructure: access to broadband; roads; and utilities. It is through the Port’s operating profits and the minimal property tax receipts that the Port is able to invest in the future of the community.

The Port of Shelton has three properties to help meet its objective: a marina, airport and industrial park.

The Oakland Bay Marina

The Marina consists of approximately five acres of tideland lots and upland property and 108 slips.

Sanderson Field

The Airport is 1000 acres of Industrial land including the Mason County fairgrounds and an “all weather” airport, 5000 feet in length. There are over 100 aircraft based at SHN.

Johns Prairie

The Port of Shelton has consolidated this 388 acre site to accommodate heavy industrial use including wood products.

The Port of Shelton welcomes you to enjoy the 2012 Mason Fair & Rodeo, July 27-29, and invites friends and family from neighboring counties and areas to experience this event and others hosted on these grounds. Take the time to discover what this area has to offer; not just as a beautiful and majestic place to visit – but also as an accommodating location to bring your business. If you would like more information regarding Port property, please call the Port at 360-426-1151 or visit www. PortofShelton.com.

Congratulations & Good Luck to participants, volunteers & organizers of the

2012 Mason Area Fair & Rodeo Wishing you success in 2012 and into the future in Mason County! From the Commissioners & Staff of the Port of Shelton www.PortofShelton.com Journeys 2

It never ceases to amaze me how beautiful the views are in Mason County! Equally amazing is how close Mason County is to the rest of the civilization, yet how pristine and abounding with recreational opportunities!

for Mason County!

Mason County

Mason County encompasses the southern reach of Hood Canal and many bays and inlets of southern Puget Sound.

Even when the sun isn’t shining, cresting the hill on Highway 101, after a fresh fall of snow in the mountains, you are hit smack in the windshield with a view to rival any wonder of the world!

Boasting pristine expanses of natural beauty, including mountains, lakes and waterways, as well as friendly people and easy access – the county has become an important recreational destination and bedroom community to Olympia, Seattle, Bremerton and Tacoma.

All of us are going a million directions at once and our lives are scheduled and over scheduled– and we are still not getting it all done. Just for a moment pause. Put down the iPhone. Unplug the games. When was the last time you gathered firewood for a beach fire? Hiked with your family to the top of a mountain? Gathered clams and poked seastars on a low tide? Made a pie to enter the fair? Take a journey to your backyard. Take a sick day. It will become a health day for the whole family as you remember what is to get your feet wet because you are playing hard. Show your family how good you are at knots or riding moguls! Mason County is full of opportunities for you to connect with friends, family and make new friends.

Vacation locally. Book a cabin at one of the great establishments on the water at Hood Canal or Hammersly. Just two hours from Seattle or ten minutes from Shelton, taking a journey has never been easier or more reasonably priced.

Turn to page 16-17 to take a peek at some of the community events planned for this Summer. We’d love to see you there!

Whether you enjoy roughing it with a campfire or all the luxuries of the finest lodging, breaking free from your schedule in Mason County will leave you energized and revitalized! On a final note, enter the Fair! Take the time to create something wonderful and show it off ! Get the whole family involved... you never know you when might discover something wonderful!

This renewed community support is an extension of the Fair group itself. After the County dropped support of the Fair in 2009, volunteers came together to form an association that allowed the Mason “Area” Fair to continue youth programs that include State placement for 4-H’ers and FFA students. Fair entry is open to all people, all ages in, and outside of, the county.

Scheduled entertainment for 2012 includes new music as well as dance and fire troupes, comedians, children’s entertainment and stage shows and contests! Check out some of the great entertainment starting page 7!

Five Island Boys from the Hawaiian Islands, have all in their own right managed brilliant careers performing and recording with other musicians all around the world. As fate would have it, they found out that they all lived within an eight-mile radius from one another. Washington State American Legion Band performing Sunday at the Mason Fair July 28 @ 11am, Main Stage The Washington State American Legion Band was started by the Olympia American Legion Post 3 in 1924. Since that year, through good years and lean years, it was recognized as a significant musical organization in the South Sound area, state-wide and nationally. Shortly after its inception, the band was also recognized as the official band of the Washington Department of the American Legion. It remained under joint support of Post 3 and the Department until 1999, when Post 3 relinquished its support to the Department and the band was renamed the Washington State American Legion Band. Throughout its tenure, the band has continued to be an integral part of the life of the Capital Cities area. It has provided entertainment through numerous concerts, civic celebrations, parades and historic community events. Since 1925 the band has participated in every state American Legion Convention and has performed at the opening day of the yachting season of the Olympia Yacht Club. It has lead scores of parades, including the Olympia Pet Parade every year since its inception. The sixtymember band is the only remaining American Legion musical organization in Washington and is one of only a handful of similar organizations nationally.

Yesteryear Car Club Displaying at the 2012 Mason Area Fair This year there will something new –while old– on display, Saturday, July 28! The local car club, Yesteryear Car Club, will be bringing a fleet of member vehicles for a 1st Annual Show & Shine. “We’re very excited to be able to support the Mason Fair,” said Bob Drinkwine, Club President, “I remember coming to this fair as a kid – it’s important that we all do what we can to show our support for this community tradition.”

For the tenth-plus year in a row, the local Yesteryear Car Club donated nearly 100 stuffed animals to the Mason General Hospital. Every year the Car Club drives some of their vintage cars (pictured here) to deliver the toys to MGH. Those delivering this year’s donation were (l-r) Vern Honstein, Charlie Holman, Annette McGee, Bill McGee, Ann Kimbel, and Ray Kimbel. (Photo by Bill Valley)

The Yesteryear Car Club was formed in Shelton, WA in 1967 by people interested in keeping alive the history and preservation of vintage and older automobiles.

Members meet monthly for a dinner meeting and plan special events, shows and group tours for members.

Mason Area Fair organizers are proud to welcome the Yesteryear Car Club Saturday, July 28 from 10am – dusk.

Since then the club has grown into a philanthropic non-profit corporation to exchange ideas and parts for car collectors, and to aid them in their efforts to restore and preserve classic vehicles.

The group sponsors the Annual Mason County Historical Society Car Show each June in downtown Shelton and is involved in fund-raising for many local groups and organizations.

The Eclectics Olympia WA | all weekend The group is comprised of two experienced singers Ron Bates Senior who sings all the older rock and pop hits; and Ron Bates Junior who sings all the newer and current rock and pop hits. Ron Bates, Junior As a self taught blind musician Ron tackled music in an alternative way. He began with piano, capturing songs by ear and applying them to the keys. Ron continued on through his early twenties playing numerous clubs and small venue shows. At age 26 Ron met his wife and traveled to her home country of Norway. Finding the alternate culture interesting especially the music scene, he made the decision to relocate to her country where he began to network with new musicians. And formed a band in Norway. Ron returned to the states with his family and entered the local scene again. Finding a love for cover material, he began to record song after song, experiencing new vocal abilities opening up a huge range of possibilities for my voice. Recently he created a project with his father,

playing cover music, performing pop and rock songs from the 70’s and 80’s and performing songs from the 90’s and 2000-s. Ron Bates, Senior Ron has been showcasing his vocal talents throughout the Northwest since the early 70’s. He originally started with a band, Scenic Root in Monroe, Washington. He showed up to listen to the band, and ended up as lead vocalist. Those infamous “Battle of the Bands” carried him in the beginning. He has shared the stage with Tower of Power, Ball & Jack, Santana, The Wailers, The Kingsman, Leadfeather, The Coasters and Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers.

Mason County Celebrates Rodeo Roots In 2001 a group of volunteers and local businesses came together to produce an NPRA rodeo at the Fair. Not since 1977 had the Mason County community enjoyed the thrills and chills of a real wild west rodeo. Rodeo is timely. It is currently the fastest growing sport in the state, and the fastest growing youth sport in 12 states. Rodeo is the number one televised sport on ESPN. It is also the only major competitive sport to evolve from a working lifestyle. Showcased at our first Rodeo were NPRA riders from four states and Canada! Over 3800 people attended!

Mason County NPRA Rodeo Friday | July 27 @ 7pm Saturday | July 28 @ 6 pm

Admission: $10 Adults | $5 Kids FREE for 5 and Under Saturday is Kid’s Day!

Rodeo Events

The NPRA Rodeo in Shelton is a full event Rodeo. Events include: Breakaway Roping, Steer wrestling, Wild Cow Milking, Businessmen’s Wild Cow Milking, Team Roping, Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding and Calf Roping.

Spectators were clear to the fence line! The Rodeo met with such success that volunteer committee turned it into an annual event. Simpson Timber offered a challenge grant to the Rodeo group to build a full size rodeo arena with the express interest that it be built as a moveable arena. The arena was constructed with limited funds and the sweat equity, dedication and skill of volunteers.

Fairgrounds Mascot: Paul Bunyan & Babe One could cross the United States and Canada simply visiting Paul Bunyans, and in fact many people do! A stop in Redwoods is not complete without joining the crowds of other tourists to snap a picture for the scrapbook at Paul’s ten foot high booths in Klamath, California. One of the most famous and popular North American folklore heroes, Paul is usually described as a giant as well as a lumberjack of unusual skill, and is often accompanied in stories by his animal companion, Babe the Blue Ox. Over 30 states and nine provinces have some form of giant Bunyan to be proud of. Shelton is no exception. In the late 50’s or early 1960’s, the Bingers Brothers brought Paul Bunyan, a fiberglass statue of legendary proportions to stand tall overlooking the local Binger Gas Station. Through Paul’s history in Shelton he had many faces and many locations, until he eventually feel into ruin. In 1995, a group of friends stepped forward and took on the daunting task to restore Paul. Later Babe was added to his side.

With the restoration of Paul and Babe, Mason County has been able to step back into the ranks of the communities and byways throughout North America that celebrate the rich heritage that is represented by these logging folk lore legends. We need to look no farther than ingenuity and integrity of this community for the resources to enhance and honor this heritage even more. Paul Bunyan and Blue are iconic mascots for Shelton and Mason County, visiting parade and festivals throughout the Northwest. They are also great draws for tourists to the area. When they are not on tour, the two will set up camp at the Fairgrounds for all to see during the year at events such as the Mason Fair and Rodeo and Oysterfest!

Mason Area Fair is Proud to Welcome Back the Dragon Steps Fire Performers with all new Acts for 2012 We are pleased and honored to welcome back to the Mason Fairgrounds to perform once again daily at the 2012 Mason Area Fair in Shelon, WA. In the late 1800’s the theatrical variety entertainment, vaudeville, was popular across North America. Performances included dancers, musicians, comedians, acrobats and jugglers. Dragon Steps reignites this tradition. Wes Mitchell, founder, initially started the idea as a fire breathing publicity stunt for a business. With a background in circus training as a youth leader at the Wenatchee Youth Circus, she was prepared for the challenge. Her accidental following evolved into a performing group, currently numbering twenty-five members. “Fire performing teaches confidence and trust. I saw amazing changes in the people around me.” says Mitchell, a hospital information manager, “I try to foster an atmosphere where people don’t just develop circus skills, Frombecoming Shelton to Yelm, they develop as human beings, stronger and more confident.” “WeTacoma have a waiter, Boeing engineer, as well as musicians,” she to aTumwater --painter, and beyond -- 94.5 ROXY continues, “Dragon Steps’ performers are everyday people doing the extraordinary.”

Many of the routines include acrobatics and dramatic display of fire, color, light and movement. All of the stunts rely on dedicated practice, complete confidence and teamwork. “In order to trust others,” says Mitchell, “you must first trust yourself.” If you missed them at the Fair last year... well here’s your chance again to catch this amazing show! Actually five chances all weekend. Although, we all highly suggest you catch an evening show... or both! If you saw them last year, don’t worry; they recently changed up their routine to include “layers.” Even if you see five performances during the Fair, chances are you will miss something– as there are things going on in every corner of the stage all the time! Dragon Steps performs with an array of dazzling light, flags and silk; creating a stunning show. Their act includes jugglers, swords, flaming whips, swing poi... dancers, acrobatics, ukemi, as well as -- Yes -- fire breathing!

In case you’re wondering, safety is top priority. The group travels with an experienced and well trained team of safety specialists. You can catch the Dragon Steps team on the main stage daily.... but you can also catch members running the Fair wine and beer garden – all proceeds go to the non-profit group! Beer supplied by Grove Street Brewery. In 2012 Dragon Steps is also providing children’s entertainment! Check the schedule for the fire-less indoor shows that are sure to thrill adults as well as kids! Please sponsor their efforts, they have been a huge support to the Mason Area Fair! Since March teams of performers have been dedicating time each weekend for Fairgrounds work parties!

Fiddlers Entertain all Weekend at the Fair!

Join us in welcoming back the Washington Old Time Fiddlers and their performance tent at the 2012 fair! We are pleased that this group is able to join us each year and be an integral part of the Mason Area Fair entertainment.

The Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association (WOTFA) is a non-profit organization formed in 1965 to preserve and promote old time fiddling and related arts. Check the daily schedules for performance times and be sure to stop by the Fiddlers Tent on the Main Fairway across from the Grange Hall Building 13.! Statewide, the organization has around 1700 members, arranged geographically into districts. Talented musicians range in age from 5 up into the 90’s. They welcome new members and you do not have to be a musician to join. Membership benefits include the opportunity to attend the summer Fiddle Workshop, plus monthly WOTFA newsletters, which publicize all statewide activities.

Many districts sponsor campouts throughout Washington State that are great opportunities to jam, socialize and learn new tunes. To carry on their tradition, the group enthusiastically promote youth musicianship. Many districts have Junior Old Time Fiddlers Groups for children ages 5 to 18. Thank you for your continued support of the Fair!

$1.00 for your thoughts! Public input needed on fate of the Mason County Fairgrounds by July 31, 2012. Currently the Fairgrounds is scheduled to b demolished in 2014, but at a Port meeting in early June, Commissioner Hupp proposed a plan to explore the possibility of leaving the fairgrounds in its present location. Hupp’ plan explores the idea of relocating buildings to comply with FAA aviation safety requirements while leaving key facilities in place. Another proposal is moving entire facility to a new location that is not within the area of concern.

The Port is asking for YOUR input on what you would like. Maintain the fairgrounds or start planning now to build new? No Comment insures NO FAIRGROUNDS after 2013.

Dear Port of Shelton Commission,

The public has until July 31, 2012 to provide input on the plan. Please take the time to read the documents on the www.portofshelton.com website.
