TUESDAY LIVE SESSION SUMMARIES Visit the conference website on Whova for full session descriptions and presenter bios. Keynote: Leading Across Our Divides to a Path Forward Together Paul Shoemaker The social challenges facing us in the 2020s are radically different than those we faced even one generation ago. The challenges ahead are massive…but so are the opportunities… if the right leaders show up: leaders like the ones across Central Washington who are ready to redefine the leader they need to be and are hungry for inspiration, stories, and direction.
The Case for Diversity: A Board Perspective Beth McCaw A nonprofit’s commitment to equity starts with the board. The board unlocks an organization’s priorities, funding, and culture. When a board creates a culture that embraces diversity and inclusion, it can more fully achieve its mission within our Central Washington communities. Join us for this conversation about how to get your board on board with diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Cross-cultural communication: Creating the space where everyone is welcome Suzy Martinez It is one thing to have diverse people sit around a table. It is another to create a culture intentionally in which everyone belongs. In this hands-on session, you will learn how to build empathy with people different from yourself. You will learn strategies for communicating across cultures as a critical element for building a culture of inclusion.
Courageous Conversations on Finance and Equity Curtis Klotz Decisions about race, equity, organizational values, and human resource strategies are interlaced throughout your nonprofit’s finances, whether you are conscience of them are not. Join in a conversation exploring how these seemingly unrelated forces influence and impact your organization’s financial policies and practices.
Leveraging Your Impact through Strategic Partnership Scott Schaffer Nonprofits can increase their community impact by aligning and partnering with other organizations. In this workshop, we will consider a continuum of partnership strategies, ranging from program collaboration to strategic alliance to merger. We will cover benefits, costs, risks and success factors for effective partnerships. Put on Your Own Oxygen Mask First Katie Thorner The last year has been extremely stressful. Taking care of ourselves has taken a backseat. The problem is that when we don’t function from a place of health, we are less effective, whether that be due to sick days, decreased energy, or lack of focus. Self care is how we show our leadership. We will discuss ways to put on your own oxygen masks so that you are able to better care for the people you work with and serve.

Leading Across Our Divides: The Workshop Paul Shoemaker During this workshop, Paul is going to share some practical next steps for taking charge of change. 2020 Epic Adventure Andrew McMasters Stories help us to make sense out of chaos. Let’s face it, we all dealt with some CHAOS in 2020. Let’s gather together and tell a Mad-Lib style story about our year, our challenges, and our triumphs. The goal is to have fun, celebrate, and look at the world behind us while we prepare for the world ahead. We understand life through stories, so let’s bring a little laughter to 2021 and have some FUN as we close out our conference day.

THURSDAY LIVE SESSION SUMMARIES Visit the conference website on Whova for full session descriptions and presenter bios. Our Nonprofit Community Norma Gallegos and Alma Chacon Norma and Alma will talk about how they have managed to keep two nonprofits thriving: Hand in Hand Immigration Services and CAFE: The Community for the Advancement of Family Education. They’ll touch on the importance of relationships, networking and connections, and working with available resources to meet community needs in the pandemic. A Native Perspective on How to Decolonize your Nonprofit Tara Ramos Despite so many efforts to lift up equity and inclusion as core nonprofit practice, there still exists a bias against Native culture and experiences. Our organizations, often unintentionally, prioritize White thought and approaches and work in opposition to Native self-determination, political and cultural autonomy, and the right to traditional land and resources. These practices hold back Native people and their ability to thrive. 5 HR Tips for a Small Nonprofit Skye Mercer So many nonprofit leaders become the accidental HR manager because someone has play that role. We’ll talk about the five big issues of HR leadership: how to prioritize pay for staff, build remote workplace/volunteer culture, be values-centric in your employment practices, use your donor engagement strategy as a model for employee/volunteer recruitment, and keep up with compliance updates. Fundraising with Community at the Center Pamela J. Oakes We will explore Community-Centric Fundraising, a model that is grounded in equity. We examine how it incorporates race, equity, social justice, and
community-building into fundraising practices, and how we—by following its principles—can enable a more equitable and just nonprofit sector. Build a Nonprofit Disaster Plan Nancy Bacon and Sarah Brooks You work hard to run programs and solve problems. You intend to do the right thing, yet limitations on time, funding, and technical knowledge get in the way of preparing your organization for emergencies. In this workshop, we unpack three key steps to disaster planning. Collaborations That Work Marty Kooistra, Angelica Reyes Mejia, and Caty Padilla Collaboration continues to prove challenging, even as resources tighten. In this session, we will put light on how Central Washington leaders have implemented the core principles of network (collaborative) leadership. We’ll examine how culture, nonprofit structures, and philanthropy can either help or hurt collaboration. Finance Q&A Explore your nonprofit questions with Hilary Tanneberg and Pam Cleaver, our experts from Moss Adams. Fundraising Q&A Sarah Brooks and Rebecca Zanatta answer your fundraising questions. A reprise of the 2021 Nonprofit Radio Show Live. Ask an Expert Join Matt Fairbanks and engage with experts and exhibitors from across eastern Washington.

Watch & Talk: Discuss your needs statement with an expert
The Central Washington Nonprofit Network began in 2014 in response to the local need for nonprofit learning and connection. Besides this Conference, we host training and regular networking events for nonprofits in the region. We believe that our communities are healthy when strong nonprofits are connected to each other and the resources around them, and they are focused on how they will make a difference. We warmly welcome you to stay involved.

WEDNESDAY Discuss your needs statement with an expert Angela Beard A fundraising “Ask” often starts with your expression of need. What problem are you trying to solve? How have you engaged the community to deepen your understanding of that problem? Learn how goes into a successful needs statement, and then bring yours to this interactive session where you will have a chance to workshop it with an expert. FRIDAY 7 Steps to Move from Overwhelm to Action Crystal Church Experience a process that shifts you from feeling out of control to one of decision making and forward movement. Crystal Church is the author of The Evolution of Dreamweaver: 7 steps to delivering on your dreams! The Nonprofit Life Cycle Kari Anderson All nonprofit organizations have natural lifecycles, from a grassroots idea to peak vitality to a turnaround — or termination. A clear understanding of your organization’s “life stage” can help frame critical conversations and inform strategic decisions. Best of all, understanding where your business sits offers you the best a starting point for capacity-building.
