5th Annual Inland Northwest Conference for the Greater Good 7

Morning Keynote Address: Deanna Davis, PhD The Start of Something Really Small: How Small Steps Lead to Big Results and Better Outcomes We often think that creating positive changes – for ourselves, our organizations, and our communities – will be an enormous and stressful endeavor. What if instead of focusing on “the bigness” of it all, we embraced “the big power of small”? What if by choosing small ways of thinking and acting differently we could make success more certain and change less challenging? In her keynote address, Deanna Davis will answer these questions by unpacking small, methodical changes you can make to set the stage for long-term success. You will learn how the practice of taking small steps can disable the fear, stress, and resistance responses that undermine good intentions and overwhelm good people. You will walk away with simple, powerful, practical tools to advance your mission and work without sacrificing your well-being. And you’ll learn how “the next big thing” in supporting the greater good may very well be “the start of something small.”

Open Space Conversations Open Space conversations are a one-hour discussion with your peers on a topic that is important to you. We asked you to tell us what you are most interested in talking about or advancing your thinking on, and we compiled a list of table topics based on your responses. Within the Session Listings on pages 6 and 7 of this program, the discussion topics are listed with the corresponding room where they will be hosted. Please choose a topic that interests you and head to that room. A facilitator will help guide the conversation. You will walk away from this session having had a deep conversation with others about a shared topic of interest. This is a great opportunity to exchange cards with colleagues and continue the discussion after the conference ends.

Lunch Panel Discussion Shaping a New Conversation We have brought together influential leaders from our area and beyond to discuss how nonprofits, government, faith-based organizations, and philanthropy can work together toward the greater good. These leaders are ready to name the “sacred cows” they encounter in their work, and challenge our sector to break down the barriers that prevent us from building even stronger communities.

Meet Our Panelists Ben Stuckart, Spokane City Council President Ben is currently in his fourth year as Spokane City Council President. Prior to political life, Ben founded Communities in Schools of Spokane County, an organization that started with nothing and is now a half-million-dollar agency annually. Ben serves on numerous local nonprofit and community boards and continues to be a visionary leader for the sector as a whole. Melanie Gillespie, Executive Director, Foundation for Healthy Generations For the past two decades, Melanie has been a leader in Washington State’s nonprofit and public sectors, serving the needs of our communities’ most vulnerable individuals and families. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the Foundation for Healthy Generations and has served on numerous local, regional, and state boards and nonprofit/public funder advisory groups over the years. Regina Malveaux, Executive Director, YWCA of Spokane Regina is recognized as a tenacious advocate for women, youth, and children. She has served as the Executive Director of the YWCA of Spokane for the past two years. Regina previously served as the executive director of the YWCA South Hampton Roads in Norfolk, Virginia and as a legal advocate for the YWCA of San Diego. She has served on numerous boards aimed at advancing racial justice and economic empowerment.

Meet Our Moderator John Traynor, PhD, Assistant Professor, Gonzaga University John is an Assistant Professor at Gonzaga University in the Department of Teacher Education where he specializes in the Foundations of Education, Teaching in the Middle School, and Jesuit Education. Workshop Descriptions Session 1 (9:30-10:45 am) Thrive on Volunteer Engagement – Move Your Nonprofit to the Next Level How prepared are you to harness the potential of 21st Century volunteers? What are the basics for building a solid volunteer engagement effort for your organizations? In this workshop, we’ll explore the “how” and “why” of effective volunteer engagement, gain a better understanding of the essential elements and infrastructure required to support your organization’s volunteer involvement efforts, and identify simple steps you can take to strengthen your volunteer program. Speaker: Barbara Bush Leadership is a Contact Sport! You don’t get to duck when you’re leading! No whiffing the ball, no missing the play-call. Let’s huddle up and talk about your role in communication, confidence, and coaching. Because leadership IS a contact sport, and if you’re handed the right playbook, you’ll be in it to win it. This workshop is designed for Executive Directors, board chairs, or others who are leading organizations and looking for an opportunity to learn and share. Speaker: Kari Anderson Tools for Nonprofits at Your Public Library The Spokane Public Library offers our local nonprofits access to a range of resources aimed to promote, support, and strengthen the nonprofit community. From conducting grant research to finding community partners for in-kind support to technology training for both staff and clients, the library is eager to help support our nonprofits in a number of different ways. Come learn how in this informative workshop. Speakers: Mark Pond Transform from Survive to Thrive: Operating Reserves – Prepare for the Next Rainy Day As the nonprofit community continues to rebuild in the face of the new economy, the need to establish or restore operating reserves has become important for many organizations. However, the need for a rainy day fund can come head to head with the desire of others in the organization to grow the mission. Join Moss Adams LLP and our guest panelists - Ryan Franklin of Moss Adams Wealth Advisors, Willie Maddox of Girl Scouts of Eastern WA, and Marlis Petersen Spawn of Gonzaga Preparatory School - as we discuss the challenges and benefits in establishing and managing operating reserves. Speakers: Tammy Erickson & Emina Cresswell, plus panel

Employment Law for Nonprofits What is the legal difference between an employee, independent contractor, intern, and volunteer and why is this important? What are the basic employment law requirements that nonprofit employers need to be aware of? This workshop will examine common employment law questions that nonprofits face. Speakers: Jodi Nishioka, Angela Hayes, & Shaun Greer

Session 2 (11:00-12:00 pm) Open Space Conversations (See page 8)

Session 3 (1:30-2:45 pm) The Future of University-Community Partnerships: How Anchor Institutions are Emerging as New Partners in Our Communities Universities have long upheld missions to engage with and support their surrounding communities. This session examines the university as an anchor institution to consider how nonprofits and other organizations can approach universities as partners, how a university’s “place-based” work differs from conventional outreach of the past, and how partnerships with anchor institutions can leverage new resources and bring new energy to work in the community. Participants will learn about the unique features of anchor institutions and their “place-based” work, examine case studies of university-community partnerships from across the United States, and then develop their own ideas for research or other shared work with a university as partner. Speakers: Ross Brooke Watts, PhD & Molly Ayers Telling Your Story Today – How do you take years of research, experience, and progress and explain it in 140 characters, 30 seconds, or a picture? More tools than ever are available to tell the story of your mission. Sometimes it is a headline, sometimes a photo, sometimes a link to an in-depth interview. How do you strategize and bring all of these pieces together when it seems to be changing all of the time? Which mediums are the best for your organization to reach and engage your stakeholders and supporters? Learn the strengths and most effective ways to use broadcast, digital, print, public relations, social media, and online directories. Speaker: Kirstin Davis The One-Page Proposal Worksheet: 10 Questions to “Speed-Think” Your Way to Project Plans, Grant Proposals, and More Crafting clear, compelling proposals is a skill that every leader needs and that anyone can learn with the right tools. This workshop will cover how to use a simple, one-page planning tool to transform good ideas into strong proposals in a matter

of minutes. In this fast-paced, interactive session, you will learn the 10 questions to ask yourself when thinking about a successful project or funding need; how to tap into your own passion to discover the most compelling story behind your great idea; and the key planning questions every decisionmaker needs to answer to make an informed and confident decision about your proposal. Come with a good idea, and you’ll leave with a head start on a compelling proposal that inspires a confident “yes!” Speaker: Maryn Boess Leadership Lessons Learned from Lincoln and Others Regardless of the role you fill within your nonprofit organization, one of the greatest areas of opportunity is using your skills and expertise to build leaders at all levels. In this session, presenters Larry MacGuffie and Dr. Rich McBride will share over 40 years of personal lessons and perspectives on leadership in work and in life. This interactive presentation, combined with videos and handouts, will provide engaging quotes and stories to enhance your leadership and mentoring abilities. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to learn skills to help you enhance your organization! Speakers: Larry MacGuffie & Rich McBride Legal Rules and Requirements for Nonprofits This workshop will cover legal compliance requirements for nonprofits and 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. All nonprofits and tax-exemption organizations have legal requirements that they need to meet on an ongoing basis, including filing reports and registering with state and federal government agencies. All nonprofit board members and nonprofit management should be aware of these legal requirements. Join us to learn what you need to know to keep your nonprofit organization in compliance with the law. Speakers: Jodi Nishioka, Stephen Faust, & Susan Amstadter

Session 4 (3:00-4:15 pm) Finance Unlocked for Nonprofits (FUN) What happens when you bring a storyteller and nonprofit accountant together to address financial literacy for nonprofit board and staff members? Finance Unlocked for Nonprofits (FUN) represents a departure from existing finance trainings. It expands what board and staff members know and can do related to nonprofit finance through BINGO cards, video shorts featuring a Jet City Improv actor, and supporting informational kits. Join us as we share FUN resources and talk about how to use them within your organization. Speakers: Nancy Bacon & Brian Shull Performance for Nonprofits: Data to Back Your Story Do you think you need an external evaluator to show your work is making a difference? This workshop will walk participants through a simple six-step approach ANYONE

can use to identify performance measures. We’ll unpack the method introduced in Mark Friedman’s book Trying Hard Is Not Enough. This straightforward tool will help support your nonprofit’s story with the evidence (data) that shows your work is making a difference. Speaker: Stacy Wenzl Technology for Nonprofits: 2015 and Beyond You are trying to move forward your mission. Technology plays a key role in your ability to do almost everything, from tracking donors to providing good service to your clients. How do you stay on top of the hardware and software decisions you need to make with the budget you have? In “Technology for Nonprofits,” Bob Bailey will go over those technology basics including how to take advantage of free or low-cost technology available to nonprofits. He will talk “cloud” and what moving to the cloud entails. Come with your questions since a good portion of the workshop will be set aside to respond to what is on your mind when it comes to technology. Speaker: Bob Bailey Preventing a Difficult Situation from Becoming a Crisis Nonprofits face challenges daily, both internally and externally. With limited resources, it’s difficult to know where to start and what to do. In this interactive session, you’ll learn the steps to take to prevent a problematic internal or external situation from escalating into a major crisis. You’ll learn how to perform a Risk Analysis to identify your vulnerabilities and strategize through a real-life scenario to avoid potentially disastrous consequences. This must-see session is designed for nonprofits of all sizes and focuses. Speaker: Alice Kaderlan Staying Up to Date with the Secretary of State Your ability to raise funds and generally do business in Washington depends on staying compliant with the Washington Secretary of State and other local jurisdictions. Join Teresa and Patrick as they talk about the nonprofit startup process (filing), as well as critical Office of the Secretary of State items like filing annual reports, making amendments, and filing statements of change. They will talk a little about reminders to contact local jurisdictions regarding sales tax and licensing requirements for nonprofit retailers and others that think they don’t have sales or B&O tax. Speakers: Teresa Glidden & Patrick Reed
