Permaculture Solution Series: Rain Gardens
Preserving the Harvest: Lacto-Fermentation
During a good rain or winter melt, some homes are hit with thousands of gallons of water that can quickly build momentum and cause flooding and drainage issues, sometimes washing out gardens and flooding basements. What is the solution? Discover the permaculture approach to rain gardens. Get the skills to design and build rain gardens that accept stormwater runoff that recharges your groundwater, provides habitats and food for wildlife (including bees and butterflies), and adds a near maintenance-free, aesthetically pleasing garden installation to your yard for very little money. This workshop will also show you how to choose native plants to populate your rain garden.
Make the most of late summer’s bounty of fresh produce by learning how to preserve vegetables through the simple, traditional method of lacto-fermentation. You’ll prevent food waste and be able to eat locally all year. The health-enhancing bacteria of lactofermented foods place them among probiotic foods. Together, we will make sauerkraut and other fermented veggies. We’ll also discuss the healing qualities and nutritional importance of live-culture foods. You will bring home a jar of sauerkraut and a booklet with instructions and recipes for dozens of fermented foods that you can easily create at home.

HOME & LIFE The Kitchen Grocery: Buy Once, Grow Forever
Crafting Leather Belts
The kitchen grocery is a term that describes growing food inside your home kitchen all year round. Since good quality food is expensive, it makes sense to acquire the knowledge necessary to reduce your grocery bills, improve your nutrient intake and maintain a fun project. While it may be unlikely that you can completely eliminate a grocery bill, you can grow certain foods in a most special way: regrowth. From upcycling basil stems to regrowing celery, a little effort can go a long way. Discover the tricks and learn the steps of regrowing. You will take home a few goodies to get you started.
Add leatherwork to your skill set after crafting a high-grade leather belt. You’ll cut a belt blank, straight from the hide, then naturally dye it brown or natural. After sizing it, you’ll punch holes, add a buckle (many to choose from), finish and burnish the edges and then add custom design. With limited enrollment, this workshop is perfect for novices.
