Codependency and Intimate Partner Abuse: Regaining Ownership of Self Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health issue. The role of codependence as an integral part of this dynamic is only peripherally understood and inadequately addressed in most therapeutic situations. IPV victims, regardless of sex, sexual preference or race, have a significant need for clinical intervention that identifies and addresses codependence issues. WCC Alumna Gears Up for Next Generation Automobiles

Washtenaw Community College alumna Mackenzie Benning is enthusiastic about her work and the contributions her team is making to support product development efforts at General Motors. As a calibration technician at General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan, Benning is responsible for making sure the instrumentation put on test vehicles — which measure everything from acceleration to air pressure to fuel consumption — is working correctly. In fact, she’s been asked to lead a group of specialists to develop a new standard for calibration intervals that will be used on more than 80,000 pieces of vehicle test equipment at the Proving Grounds. This includes equipment used to develop the next generation of electric and autonomous vehicles. “With the new electric vehicles coming out, we have a lot of new equipment that has to meet new standards,” Benning said. “It’s also interesting how different the instrumentation is for autonomous vehicles. There are sensors for anything you can think of from seeing in front, to the temperature, to humidity, to pressure outside.”

“WCC prepared me really well.” Benning chose WCC after graduating from Chelsea High School. Not long after starting at WCC, she was connected to General Motors for an internship through WCC’s experiential learning program. “My manager says that I was selected because I had already taken several calculus courses, as well as differential equations,” said Benning, who earned a General Math and Natural Science associate degree. “I feel like WCC prepared me really well.”

Gregorio Melean has been teaching Spanish at Washtenaw Community College since 2011. A native of Venezuela, Melean’s approach to teaching Spanish begins with listening comprehension. “It’s necessary to understand what others say to start a conversation,” says Melean. From there he guides students on to extended vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar rules. Having been educated in chemistry, Melean applies his same analytical mind to language. He believes that every expression in Spanish has a reason. It can be evident, such as one found in grammar rules, or not so evident with an unexplained origin from centuries ago.

What is a CEU? A CEU (continuing education unit) is a

national measurement unit. One CEU equals ten classroom or equivalent hours, and is used to record, transfer and recognize participation in noncredit learning experiences.

Emeritus Scholarship:

In order to be granted emeritus status, you must follow these steps prior to registering for your first class: Confirm that you are an in-district resident and that you are 65 years of age by January 1, 2020, by bringing your driver’s license or state-issued photo ID to Student Connection on WCC campus. To register online with the scholarship, please contact our offices at 734-677-5060 and we will apply the scholarship to your tuition for noncredit classes. Please note that the emeritus scholarship does not apply to mandatory class fees.

Nonprofit Agency Scholarship:

This scholarship provides payment for tuition (only) of agency-approved Economic and Community Development noncredit classes. Submit an application each semester for each class you plan to attend. You must complete all items on this checklist to qualify: 1) You must be a permanent employee of a nonprofit agency (permanent position) in Washtenaw County; 2) Submit the nonprofit agency scholarship application, complete with supervisor approved class(es) and signature, ten business days before start of class; 3) You must attend all class sessions and complete all class requirements. If the class is not successfully completed, you (or your agency) may be billed for the full tuition amount of the class and/or have your scholarship discontinued; 4) You must submit your completed application form with a copy of your agency’s 501(c)3 documentation no later than ten business days before the start of class.
