WCC Alumnus Dives into the Pandemic Hunter Darrow While life has been moving at a slower pace for many over the past year, Hunter Darrow has been racking up monumental achievements at a rapid pace. Not only did Darrow graduate from the Washtenaw Community College nursing program and land a job as a registered nurse in the emergency room at Michigan Medicine’s University Hospital, she also married her husband, Kevin. “It was a very different wedding than we originally planned,” she says. “We were supposed to have a wedding with 250 people in May 2020, but ended up with 20 people on a rainy day in August.” Darrow jokes that if a newly married couple can make it through being locked down together during a pandemic, they can make it through anything. The same, of course, could be said about starting a new career as a nurse during the same time. “I knew what I was getting into,” Darrow says of joining the nursing profession in the midst of COVID-19. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.” Darrow graduated in December from the collaborative nursing program between WCC and Eastern Michigan University, which was launched in 2016 to address the growing demand for bachelor’s degree-prepared nurses. Up to 94 credits toward the 120-credit degree can be completed at WCC before transferring to EMU and completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. But the nursing program wasn’t Darrow’s first time at WCC. Harry Arnold

| AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Harry Arnold developed a passion for photography at a very early age. Arnold’s father, a photography teacher, spent time at home developing rolls of film in the basement darkroom, igniting a spark in his son that would continue to grow through childhood. Arnold began tinkering with radio-control cars and helicopters, and a new idea started to take shape in his young mind. “This was my Reese’s aha! moment,” says Arnold. “Just like when someone dropped peanut butter into a vat of chocolate and it was magical, I duct taped a camera to my radio-control helicopter, which completely changed my perspective on photography and film.” Ten years later, Arnold upgraded to modern aerial devices and started his own company, Detroit Drones. A bird’s view is highly engaging, and more people–of all ages–are seeking out drones. “From a business standpoint, my goal is to capture the wonder of an aerial view no matter the subject,” says Arnold. “From a teaching standpoint, I want students to experience a smooth first flight in the hopes of lighting a spark within.”

What Is a CEU? A CEU (continuing education unit) is a

national measurement unit. One CEU equals ten classroom or equivalent hours and is used to record, transfer and recognize participation in noncredit classes.

Emeritus Scholarship: In order to be granted emeritus

Nonprofit Agency Scholarship: This scholarship

provides payment for tuition (only) of agency-approved Economic and Community Development noncredit classes. Submit an application each semester for each class you plan to attend. You must complete all items on this checklist to qualify: 1) You must be a permanent employee of a nonprofit agency (permanent position) in Washtenaw County; 2) Submit the nonprofit agency scholarship application, complete with supervisor-approved class(es) and signature, 10 business days before start of class; 3) You must attend all class sessions and complete all class requirements. If the class is not successfully completed, you (or your agency) may be billed for the full tuition amount of the class and/or have your scholarship discontinued; 4) You must submit your completed application form with a copy of your agency’s 501(c)3 documentation no later than 10 business days before the start of class.
