TRAINER PROFILE

Linda Tinsley |

HEALTH CARE

When Linda Tinsley contemplated a career 36 years ago, she wanted to go into nursing. But then she took a job as a phlebotomy technician and really loved it. As she continued working for a local health system in that role, she also obtained a business management degree. After several years working in the lab, a position came open as the manager. She was encouraged to apply and she got the job! Today she is the manager of outpatient services at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital, and she supervises 72 people at multiple locations throughout the western suburbs of Detroit. Linda is also an instructor of the Phlebotomy Fundamentals and Certification Course at Washtenaw Community College, a role she began in 2004. She said that individuals of all backgrounds have taken her class and used being a phlebotomy technician as a stepping stone into other health care roles such as nursing, physician assistant and patient care technician. Tinsley is an active member of the National Health Career Association (NHA) which is a certifying agency for students to become nationally certified phlebotomy technicians. She is passionate about being a supportive educator and preparing learners for success in passing the NHA exam. She ensures her students develop the skills necessary for potential employers.

If you shop at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or Zerbos, you enjoy the availability of organic produce, locally sourced products, cage-free eggs and other natural products. Many of these specialty items were first available at food cooperative or co-ops. The mission of the Ypsilanti Food Co-op, which incorporated in 1975, is to provide high-quality food and goods, produced ecologically and sustainably, while practicing cooperative economics. The Food Co-op has served the community well over the years, and during the pandemic, rapid, somewhat unexpected growth occurred increasing sales. With the help of the MI-Small Business Development Center’s (SBDC) Ron Stevens, associate regional director and business consultant, the Co-op continues to grow and be a vital pillar in the community. “Ron Stevens has helped me to turn volunteers into staff, enhance communication with our board, develop budgets, assist with an expansion project, walk us through the process of borrowing money and help us manage our recent growth plans,” shares Corinne Sikorski, general manager of the Co-op. During their recent expansion into a soon-to-be café, bakery, and prepared food counter, MI-SBDC’s Stevens helped with understanding the costs of adding a different operation to the portfolio, budgeting and securing funding.

This class imparts knowledge of MIOSHA Standards, training essentials, brief portions of the MMUTCD Part 6, and more specifics to help participants evaluate and therefore prepare for inevitable safety-related issues involving work zones and mobile equipment on construction jobsites in the State of Michigan. MRI Technologist Fulfills Dream Anna Piloske When she was a senior at Chelsea High School, Anna Piloske was certain about a career in the medical field but uncertain about her choice of a profession. She contacted Chelsea Hospital to see about a job shadow opportunity. The hospital generously set up placements for her in respiratory therapy, radiation therapy and surgical technology. She said her experience helped her narrow her interest. Recommendations from her high school counselors, teachers and friends, and a two-year scholarship to cover her tuition and books, confirmed her choice to fulfill her prerequisites and explore her career options at Washtenaw Community College. “I know a couple of my friends got a lot of funding as well,” she shares. “It’s just a matter of applying. I mean if you apply, chances are you will receive financial help. The College provided a pathway where I would receive credits that would transfer through the Michigan Transfer Agreement to a four-year college. WCC was leading me in the right direction.” She applied to the College’s radiography program to pursue a career as a medical resonance imaging (MRI) technologist. A job shadow at Beaumont Hospital validated her decision. “The radiologist knew about WCC’s MRI program and had a lot of insight. I thought it was so cool. Just seeing the different images and being able to help people. And help the radiologist make diagnoses.” After completing her Associate in Applied Science degree in Radiography, she transferred to Oakland University where she earned her MRI certificate. The day after she received her certificate, she had an interview. Pioske now lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, and works as an MRI technologist. “There are so many opportunities in this company and always room for * Classes are eligible career growth infor thecontinuing MRI field,”education she said.contact hours by the Michigan Social Work Collaborative.

Shou Sugi Ban Workshop Originating in Japan in the 1600s, shou sugi ban is an ancient Japanese technique for waterproofing and preserving wood. Traditionally, three planks were wired together to form a triangular tube and placed over a small fire. Once the surface was significantly charred, the planks were removed, extinguished, scrubbed clean, and then sealed with an oil. This method is sustainable and a safe way to finish timber without the use of chemicals. Recently, shou sugi ban has increased in popularity among architects and designers for both its aesthetics and its green nature.

Deb Guidot-Allen loves art and has worked as an artist for the past 30 years. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Eastern Michigan University, and her Master of Arts from Wayne State University with concentrations in watercolor, drawing, ceramics, and stone carving.
