It was a winding road that took Nicholas Ochal to a career in social work. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I ‘grew up,’ but I knew I had to get an education,” Ochal said. “I started at WCC because it was the less expensive option while I figured out what I wanted to study. “My first semester at WCC didn’t go well,” Ochal recalled. “I stopped attending classes and took a year off to re-evaluate why I wanted to go to school.” A coworker suggested to Ochal that he might want to look into social work as a career. “I Googled it and it sparked an inner drive that I didn’t have before,” Ochal said. “I re-enrolled at WCC after that year off with a new purpose and ended up graduating with high honors.” After earning an associate of arts in human services degree from WCC, he went on to gain a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and a master’s from the University of Michigan, both in social work. Today as the clinical coordinator at Beginning Step in Westland, an outpatient substance use disorder treatment program, Ochal is responsible for all of the clinical services and oversees the work of master-level counselors.

TRAINER PROFILE
Francesca Giarraffa RUSTIC ITALIAN COOKING Francesca Giarraffa emigrated to the United States in 1984 from her home in Naples, Italy. After arriving in Ann Arbor, she worked in a variety of area restaurants before she began teaching Italian cooking, a natural progression for her. “My love for cooking comes from the times I spent with my grandmother, mother, and aunt in the kitchen, talking, working, laughing and preparing food for our family,” said Giarraffa. “Making the special holiday meals was the best.” Giarraffa creates an atmosphere of fun in her classes, imitating the joy she grew up with in the kitchen. She especially loves when someone tells her that making a dish brings back memories of parents, grandparents and family. Giarraffa delights in passing on the traditions of making food from her native country and sharing her memories of growing up. “I really enjoy the fact that people come to my classes and they learn that making, let’s say, a lasagna, or risotto, or pasta, isn’t that hard,” added Giarraffa. “It’s fun and easy and they become proud of themselves.”
