History

The World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) is a non-‐profit international organization representing the needs and interests of national associations of sign language interpreters throughout the world. Founded in July 2003 at the 14th World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) in Montreal Canada, WASLI enjoys close ties to the international organization representing Deaf people. The association is comprised of a volunteer Board of Directors, including eight regional representatives. WASLI, through its national and individual supporting members, give a great deal of their time and energy to promote the development of the interpreting profession. Our mandate is to help countries work to establish strong interpreter associations that can work collaboratively with Deaf organizations to ensure Deaf people have access to well-‐trained and professional interpreters. WASLI has hosted several conferences that have drawn delegates from all over the world. The conferences are a key activity that provides professional development for many interpreters that have no access to such in their home country. It also allows for the exchange of ideas, best practice approaches, and the opportunity to build capacity among interpreter communities. The General Assembly meetings also allow for the national associations to participate in setting the direction for the organization to take over the next four years. Our first inaugural conference was held in 2005 in Worcester, South Africa. The first conference of WASLI welcomed over 220 delegates from over 40 countries. This conference saw the first elections take place for the WASLI board, and the beginnings of our strategic planning. Our next conference was hosted by FILSE, the Spanish national association of interpreters. This event took place in 2007 in Segovia, Spain. The second WASLI Conference welcomed 293 delegates from 44 countries. At this event a historic WASLI/WFD Joint Agreement was signed, furthering cooperation between the two international bodies. The second WASLI Executive Board was elected and three individuals were appointed to develop the work of WASLI in Africa, South America and the Balkans. Our most recent conference was held in 2011 at Durban, South Africa. The third WASLI Conference welcomed 160 delegates from 46 countries, including 17 African countries. Mr. Colin Allen was the keynote speaker on the conference theme of "Think Globally: Act Locally" and he went on to be elected as WFD President a few days later. WASLI is excited to host our next conference in Istanbul, Turkey, and we look forward to welcoming all guests and delegates. We appreciate and acknowledge your important contribution in supporting WASLI 2015. 3
